القناعة: لغة: الرضى بالقسمة. وعرفا: الإقصار على الكفاف. ويقال: الاجتزاء باليسير من الأعراض المحتاج إليها.وفي اصطلاح القوم: السكون عند عدم المألوفات. وقيل: الاكتفاء بالبلغة. وقيل سكون الجأش عند أدنى المعاش. وقيل: الوقوف عند الكفاية.
