العذاب: كل مؤلم للنفس إذا كان جزاء على سوء، واشتقاقه من عذب الشيء إذا استمر وجرى، فالألم يستمر في النفس، ويتغلغل فيها. وقيل العذاب إيلام لا إخبار فيه، وقيل أصله عند العرب الضرب ثم استعمل في عقوبة مؤلمة، واستعير للأمور الشاقة فقيل "السفر قطعة من العذاب" .
