الثواب: الجزاء الخير، ذكره الراغب. وقال الحرالي: الثواب ما يرجع إلى الإنسان من جزاء أعماله فسمي الجزاء ثوابا تصورا أنه هو، ألا ترى أنه جعل الجزاء نفس الفعل في قوله: {فَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ} . الآية. والثواب يقال في الخير والشر لكن الأكثر المتعارف في الخير. واستعماله في الشر استعارة كاستعارة البشارة فيه.
