هو تشديد الحرف، ومنه أنّ المثقلة والنون الثقيلة. وقد يطلق على الضّم أيضا في فتح الباري شرح صحيح البخاري في باب ما جاء في صفة الجنة من كتاب بدء الخلق: المراد بالتثقيل هاهنا الضّم وبالتخفيف الإسكان انتهى.
