التّثويب:
[في الانكليزية] Invocation ،prayer
[ في الفرنسية] Invocation ،priere
هو الدّعاء مأخوذ من الثّوب فإنّ الرجل إذا كان جاء مستغيثا حرك ثوبه رافعا يديه ليراه المستغاث فيكون ذلك دعاء له، ثم كثر حتى سمّي كل دعاء تثويبا. وقيل هو ترديد الدّعاء، تفعيل من ثاب يثوب إذا رجع وعاد، كذا في البرجندي شرح مختصر الوقاية في باب الأذان.
وفي جامع الرموز التثويب لغة تكرير الدّعاء، وشرعا ما تعارفه كلّ بلدة بين الأذانين. وفي المحيط أنه كان في زمانه عليه الصلاة والسلام الصلاة خير من النوم مرتين في أذان الفجر أو بعده ثم أحدث التابعون وأهل الكوفة بدله الحيعلتين مرتين.
