البَحْر: خلاف البَرّ، الماءُ المِلْحُ، كل نهر عظيم، قال الراغب: "أصل البحر كل مكان واسع جامع للماء الكثير هذا هو الأصل ثم اعتبر تارة سعته فيقال بحرت كذا أوسعته سعة البحر تشبّهاً به ومنه سميت البحيرة وذلك ما كانوا يجعلونه بالناقة إذا ولدت عشرةَ أبطن شقُّوا أذَنها فيسيبونها فلا تحمل وتركب وسموا كل متوسع في شيء بحراً".
