الأمُّ: هي الوالدة ومن المجاز المرضِعة وأزواجُ النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - وأريد في قوله تعالى: {أُمَّهَاتُكُمْ} [النساء:23] الأصل من الإناث بطريق عموم المجاز. وفي "المفردات": "الأم: هي الوالدة القريبة والبعيدة. ويقال لكل ما كان أصلاً لوجود شيء أو تربيته أو إصلاحه أو مبدئه أمَّ". قال الخليل: "كل شيء ضُمَّ إليه سائر ما يليه أمَاً".
