[ر ذ ل] الرَّذْلُ والرَّذِيلُ والأَرْذَلُ الدُّونُ من النّاسِ وقِيلَ هو الرَّدِيءُ من كُلِّ شَيْءٍ والجَمْعُ أَرْذالٌ ورُذَلاءُ ورُذُولٌ ورُذالٌ الأَخِيرةُ من الجَمْعِ العَزِيز والأَرْذَلُون ولا تُفارِقُ هذِه الأَلِفَ واللامَ لأَنّها عَقِيبَةُ مِنْ وقولُه تَعالَى {قالوا أنؤمن لك واتبعك الأرذلون} الشعراء 111 قالَ الزَّجّاجُ نَسَبُوهم إِلى الحِياكَةِ والحِجامَةِ والصِّناعاتُ لا تَضُرُّ في باب الدٍّ ياناتِ والأُنْثَى رَذْلَةٌ وقد رَذُلَ رَذالَةً ورُذُولَةً ورَذَلَه يَرْذُلُه رَذْلاً جَعَلَه كذلِك وحَكَى سِيبَوَيْهِ رُذِلَ قالَ كَأَنَّه وُضِعَ ذلِك فيهِ يَعْنِي أَنّه لم يَعْرِض لرُذِلَ ولو عَرَض له لقالَ رَذًّلَه فشَدًّد وثَوْبٌ رَذِيلٌ وَسِخٌ رَدِيءٌ والرُّذالُ والرُّذالَةُ ما انْتُقِيَ جَيِّدُه وبَقِيَ رَدِيئُه والرًّذِيلَةُ ضِدُّ الفَضِيلة
