جهم: تجهَّم، يقال: تجهم في وجه فلان أي استقبله بوجه كريه وكلح في وجهه، ففي رياض النفوس (ص73 ق): وأبو الغصن يتجهم في وجه الشاب.
وهذا الفعل يستعمل أيضاً بمعنى عبس وقطب فقال: تجهّم وجهه (1060) (عباد 2: 40 رقم 10).
جَهام: قبيح، كريه المنظر (1061) (ألف ليلة برسل 7: 162) في الكلام عن زنجي.

(جَهْمٌ) الْجِيمُ وَالْهَاءُ وَالْمِيمُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى خِلَافِ الْبَشَاشَةِ وَالطَّلَاقَةِ. يُقَالُ رَجُلٌ جَهْمُ الْوَجْهِ أَيْ كَرِيهُهُ. وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ جَهْمَةُ اللَّيْلِ وَجُهْمَتُهُ، وَهِيَ مَا بَيْنَ أَوَّلِهِ إِلَى رُبُعِهِ. وَيُقَالُ جَهَمْتُ الرَّجُلَ وَتَجَهَّمْتُهُ، إِذَا اسْتَقْبَلْتَهُ بِوَجْهٍ جَهْمٍ. قَالَ:

فَلَا تَجْهَمِينَا أُمَّ عَمْرٍو فَإِنَّنَا ... بِنَا دَاءُ ظَبْيٍ لَمْ تَخُنْهُ عَوَامِلُهْ

وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ قَوْلُهُ:

وَبَلْدَةٍ تَجَهَّمُ الْجَهُومَا

فَإِنَّ مَعْنَاهُ تَسْتَقْبِلُهُ بِمَا يَكْرَهُ. وَمِنَ الْبَابِ الْجَهَامُ: السَّحَابُ الَّذِي أَرَاقَ مَاءَهُ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ خَيْرَهُ يَقِلُّ فَلَا يُسْتَشْرَفُ لَهُ. وَيُقَالُ الْجَهُومُ الْعَاجِزُ ; وَهُوَ قَرِيبٌ.
