بالفتح، والشين مخففة، وربما مدّت همزته:
مدينة الأشات بالأندلس من كورة البيرة وتعرف بوادي أش، والغالب على شجرها الشاهبلوط، وتنحدر إليها أنهار من جبال الثلج، بينها وبين غرناطة أربعون ميلا، وهي بين غرناطة وبجّانة، وفيها يكون الإبريسم الكثير، قال ابن حوقل: بين ماردة ومدلين يومان ومنها إلى ترجيلة يومان ومنها إلى قصر أش يومان ومن قصر أش إلى مكناسة يومان، قلت: ولا أدري قصر أش هو وادي أش أو غيره.

(أَشَّ) الْهَمْزَةُ وَالشِّينُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى الْحَرَكَةِ لِلِّقَاءِ. قَالَ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ: أَشَّ الْقَوْمُ يَؤُشُّونَ أشًّا: إِذَا قَامَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ لِلشَّرِّ لَا لِلْخَيْرِ. وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: الْأَشَاشُ مِثْلُ الْهَشَاشِ. وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: «كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ بَعْضَ الْأَشَاشِ وَعَظَهُمْ» .
