أ1 خَبَأَهُ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) aor. ـَ (Msb, K,) inf. n. خَبْءٌ, (S, Msb,) He hid, or concealed, it; (Mgh, Msb, K;) as also ↓ خبّأهُ, [but app. in an intensive sense, or applying to a number of things,] (K,) inf. n. تَخْبِئَةٌ; (TA;) and ↓ اختبأهُ. (K.) b2: He kept it, preserved it, guarded it, or took care of it. and ↓ خبّأهُ he did so much; and well, or carefully. (Msb.) [He laid it up; stored it, or reposited it, in a place of safety.]2 خَبَّاَ see 1, in two places. [Hence, خبّأ جَارِيَةً He kept a girl carefully concealed from view: see the pass. part. n., below.]3 خَابَأْتُهُ مَا كَذَا, (K,) inf. n. مُخَابَأَةٌ, (TK,) I proposed to him as an enigma, What is such a thing? syn. حَاجَيْتُهُ. (K. [See also 8.]) 8 اختبأ It was, or became, hidden, or concealed: (Mgh:) he hid, or concealed, himself. (S.) A2: It is also trans.: see 1. b2: [Hence,] ↓ اختبأ لَهُ خَبِيْئًا He expressed a thing enigmatically to him, and then asked him respecting it. (IDrd, K. [See also 3.]) خَبْءٌ (S, Msb, K) and ↓ خِبْءٌ (TA) and ↓ خُبْأَةٌ, of the measure فُعْلَةٌ from الخبأ [or rather الخَبْءُ], like غُرْفَةٌ and قُبْضَةٌ from الغَرْفُ and القَبْضُ, (Har p. 426,) and ↓ خَبِىْءٌ (S, K) and ↓ خَبِيْئَةٌ, (K,) of which last the pl. is خَبَايَا, (TA,) A thing that is hidden, or concealed, (S, * Msb, K,) and absent, or unseen. (K.) [Hence,] خَبْءُ السَّمَآءِ The rain. (Th, S, K.) And خَبْءُ الأَرْضِ The plants, or herbage. (S, K.) And الأَرْضِ ↓ خَبَايَا The seed which the sower has hidden in the earth: or what God has hidden in the mines of the earth. (TA, from a trad.) الَّذِى يُخْرِجُ الخَبْءَ فِى السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ, in the Kur [xxvii. 25], is held by Az to mean Who knoweth what is unseen in the heavens and the earth; agreeably with an explanation of الخَبْءُ by Fr. (TA.) خِبْءٌ: see the next preceding paragraph.

خَبْأَةٌ A daughter; syn. بِنْتٌ. (K, TA. [In the CK, النَّبْتُ is put for البِنْتُ.]) Hence the prov., خَبْأَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ يَفَعَةِ سَوْءٍ [A daughter is better than a grown-up boy of evil deeds]. (TA.) [In Freytag's Arab. Prov., i. 438, the first word in this prov. is written خُبَأَة, and followed by صِدْقٍ.] Aboo-Zeyd Sa'eed Ibn-Ows El-Ansáree entitled one of his books كتاب خبأة because he commenced it by mentioning خبأة in the sense of بنت, quoting the foregoing prov. in confirmation thereof. (TA.) خُبْأَةٌ: see خَبْءٌ.

اِمْرَأَةٌ خُبَأَةٌ A woman who shows herself and then hides herself: (S, O, TA:) [like قُبَعَةٌ:] or a woman who keeps to her house, or tent. (K.) خِبَآءٌ A well-known kind of structure; (K;) [i. e.] a kind of tent, (Mgh, TA,) made of wool, (Mgh, Msb,) or of camels' fur, or sometimes of [goats'] hair, sometimes upon two poles, or three; what is above this kind being termed بَيْتٌ: (Msb:) or a tent having one pole; that which has more than one pole being termed بيت: (Az, TA in art. ربع:) [or] also applied to a بيت [or tent] of any kind: (Towsheeh, TA voce بَيْتٌ, q. v.:) pl. أَخْبِئَةٌ, (TA,) or أَخْبِيَةٌ: (Msb:) it is from خَبَأَهُ “ he hid it,” or “ concealed it: ” (Mgh:) or it belongs to art. خبى: (K:) most of the lexicologists hold that its radical letters are خبى: some, that they are خبو: IDrd asserts that they are خبأ. خَبِيْئَةٌ, and its pl. خَبَايَا: see خَبٌءٌ, in two places.

كَيْدٌ خَابِئٌ An artifice, or a stratagem, resulting in disappointment; i. q. خَائِبٌ; (AHei, K;) formed [from the latter] by transposition. (AHei.) خَابِئَةٌ, as sometimes pronounced, (Msb,) or خَابِيَةٌ, with the ء suppressed, (S, Msb, K,) because of frequent usage, (Msb,) i. q. حُبٌّ [q. v.]; (S, K;) i. e. A large jar: pl. خوابى [i. e. خَوَابِئُ, or خَوَابٍ]: (TA:) from خَبَأَهُ “ he hid it,” or “ concealed it. ” (S, Msb.) b2: [Hence,] بِنْتُ الخَابِيَةِ (assumed tropical:) Wine. (Har p. 365.) مَخْبَأٌ A place, or chamber, for hiding or concealing [anything]; a secret place or chamber: pl. مَخَابِئُ. (MA.) جَارِيَةٌ مُخَبَّأَةٌ; so in the [S and] O, and in some of the correct copies of the K; in other copies of the K مُخْبَأَةٌ; (TA;) [and thus in the CK;] A girl that is [kept in the house, or tent,] concealed from view; or that conceals herself; (S;) that is kept behind, or within, the curtain; (K, TA;) not going forth: or (TA) that is not yet married. 1 مَثَلَ aor. ـُ , inf. n. مُثُولٌ; (S, M, K, &c.;) and مَثُلَ; (M, K;) He stood erect; (S, M, K, &c.;) بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ before him. (S, &c.) b2: مَثَلَ بِهِ, inf. n. مُثْلَةٌ, He mutilated him; castrated him; namely, a sheep or goat. (TA in art. دجن, from a trad.) 2 مَثَّلَ : see a verse of Kutheiyir in art. رود, conj. 4. b2: مَثَّلَهُ: see شَبَّهَهُ.3 مَاثَلَهُ i. q. شَابَهَهُ. مَثَلٌ i. q. صِفَةٌ [as meaning A description, condition, state, case, &c.]; (S, K, &c.;) or وَصْفٌ [meaning the same]: (Msb:) or this is a mistake: (Mbr, AAF, TA:) or it may be a tropical signification: (MF, TA:) for in the language of the Arabs it means a description by way of comparison: (AAF, TA:) you say مثل زيد مثل فلان [The description of Zeyd, by way of comparison, or the condition, &c., is that of such a one]: it is from المِثاَلُ and الحَذْوُ: (Mbr, TA:) it is metaphorically applied to a condition, state, or case, that is important, strange, or wonderful. (Ksh, Bd in ii. 16.) The phrase here given is more literally, and better, rendered, The similitude of Zeyd is the similitude, or is that, of such a one; for a similitude is a description by way of comparison. b2: You say also, جَعَلَهُ مَثَلًا لِكَذَا [He made it (an expression or the like) to be descriptive, by way of comparison, of such a thing]. (TA passim.) [And مَثَلٌ لِكَذَا meansAn expression denoting, by way of similitude, such a thing.] b3: عَلَى المَثَلِ As indicative of resemblance to something. b4: See بَدَلٌ.

مِثَالٌ Quality, made, manner, fashion, and form; (Msb;) a model according to which another thing is made or proportioned; a pattern, (مِقْدَارٌ) by which a thing is measured, proportioned, or cut out: (T:) an example of a class of words, of a rule, &c. b2: مِنْ غَيْرِ سَبْقِ مِثاَلٍ [Without there having been any precedent]. (Msb in art. قرح, &c.) b3: [A bed:] بَناَتُ المِثَالِ The daughters of the bed; meaning women. (T in art. بنى.) جَوْزُ مَاثِلٍ : see جَوْزٌ.

قصر

1 قَصُرَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. قِصَرٌ (S, M, Msb, K, &c.) and قَصْرٌ (IAar, M, K) and قَصَارَةٌ, (Lh, M, K,) It (a thing, S, Msb, i. e. anything, M) was, or became, short; contr. of طَالَ. (S, M, Msb, K.) b2: [And It was, or became, too short. and قَصُرَ عَنْهُ It was, or became, too short for him, or it. b3: Hence, قَصُرَتْ يَدُهُ, and قَصُرَ بَاعُهُ, (tropical:) He had little, or no, power: and he was, or became, niggardly.]

(Kull p. 128.) [And ↓ قصّر دُونَهُ He fell short of reaching, or attaining, it: see an ex. voce يَعْقُوبٌ.] [Hence also,] قَصَرَتْ بِنَا النَّفَقَةُ The money for expenses [fell short of what we required;] did not enable us to attain our object; (Msb;) meaning, that they were unable to pay the expenses: (Mgh:) and بِهِ ↓ قَصَّرَ

أَمَلُهُ [his hope fell short of what he required]: 'Antarah says, فَالْيَوْمَ قَصَّرَ عَنْ تِلْقَائِكَ الأَمَلُ [but to-day, hope hath fallen short of extending to the meeting with thee]. (TA.) [And hence, app.,] بِكَذَا نَفْسُكَ ↓ قَصَّرَتْ [Thy mind, or wish, fell short of what was requisite with respect to such a thing], said to him who has sought, or desired, little, and a mean share or lot. (TA.) And, بِفُلَانٍ ↓ قَصَّرَ [He fell short of what was required by such a one, or due to him; or] he acted meanly, and sparingly, with such a one, in a gift. (M.) قَصَرَ عَنِّى الوَجَعُ, and الغَضَبُ, (M, K,) aor. ـُ inf. n. قُصُورٌ, (M,) The pain, and anger, ceased from me; quitted me; (M, K;) as also قَصِرَ; (M, TA;) which latter is erroneously written in the copies of the K, قَصَّرَ: (TA:) and قَصَرْتُ أَنَا عَنْهُ [I ceased from it]. (M.) and الْمَطَرُ ↓ أَقْصَرَ The rain left off. (TA.) A3: قَدْ قَصَرَ العَشِىُّ, aor. ـُ inf. n. قُصُورٌ, [The afternoon, or evening, has come,] is said when you enter upon the مَسَآء [i. e. afternoon, or evening]: (S:) or it means has almost drawn near to night. You say قَصَرْتُ قَيْدَ البَعِيرِ; (Msb;) and قَصَرْتُ لَهُ مِنْ قَيْدِهِ; (M;) aor. ـُ inf. n. قَصْرٌ; (M, Msb;) I contracted the shackles of the camel; syn. صَيَّقُتُهُ; (Msb;) and I contracted his shackles; syn. قَارَبْتُ. (M.) [And in like manner, العَطِيَّةَ ↓ قَصَّرَ, inf. n. تَقْصِيرٌ, He made the gift scanty, or mean: or, accord. to the TK, قصّر فِى العَطِيَّةِ, which properly signifies he fell short of what he ought to have done with respect to the gift: but, though each of these phrases is doubtless correct, the former expression I hold to be that which is indicated when it is said that] التَّقْصِيرُ signifies إِخْسَاسُ العَطِيَّةِ. A5: قَصَرَهُ, (S, M, Msb,) aor. ـُ (S, M,) inf. n. قَصْرٌ, (S, M, Msb, K,) He confined, restricted, limited, kept within certain bounds or limits, restrained, withheld, hindered or prevented, him, or it; syn. حَبَسَهُ. (S, M, Msb, K. *) It is said in a trad. of Mo'ádh, لَهُ مَا قَصَرَ فِى بَيْتِهِ To him belongeth what he hath held confined in, or kept within, his house or tent: (TA:) or what he hath held in possession &c. (Az, TA in art. خمر: see 10 in that art.) Yousay also قَصَرْتُ الدَّارَ, inf. n. as above, I [confined and so] defended the house by walls. (TA.) and قَصَرَ الجَارِيَةَ بِالْحِجَابِ He [confined and so] kept safe the girl by means of the veil, or covering, or the like: and in like manner you say of a horse. (TA.) And in a trad. of 'Omar it is said, قَصَرَ بِهِمُ اللَّيْلُ, (TA,) or ↓ قَصَّرَ, (L,) The night withheld them; namely a company of riders upon camels on other beasts. (L, TA.) You also say قَصَرَ الرَّجُلَ عَنِ الأَمْرِ [and قَصَرَ بِهِ and به ↓ قصّر] He withheld the man from the thing, or affair, that he desired to do. (TA.) [See an ex. in a verse cited voce طَلَّاع.] And قَصَرْتُ نَفَسِى عَنْ شَىْءٍ I withheld, or restrained, myself from a thing: (JK, TA: *) and I restrained myself from inordinate desire of a thing. (TA.) Lebeed says فَلَسْتُ وَإِنْ أَقْصَرْتُ عَنْهُ بِمُقْصِرِ meaning, But although thou blame in order that I may be restrained, I do not refrain from that which I desire to do. (El-Mázinee, L.) Also, قَصَرْتُ طَرْفِى [I restrained my eye, or eyes;] I did not raise my eye, or eyes, towards that at which I ought not to look. (TA.) And قَصَرَ البَصَرَ He turned away the eye. (TA.) It is also said in a trad. of I'Ab, قُصِرَ الرِّجَالُ عَلَى أَرْبَعٍ مِنْ أَجْلِ

أَمْوَالِ اليَتَامَى Men were restricted to marrying no more than four [because of the property of the orphans which they might leave]. (TA.) and one says قَصَرْتُ نَفْسِى عَلَى الشَّىْءِ I confined, or restricted, myself to the thing, and obliged myself to do it. (TA.) [See also 8.] Hence what is said of Thumámeh, in a trad., فأَبَى أَنْ يُسْلِمَ قَصْرًا But he refused to become a Muslim by constraint and compulsion: or by force, as some say, from القَسُرُ; the س being changed into ص, as is done in many other cases. (TA.) You say also قَصَرْتُ الشَّىْءَ عَلَى كَذَا I restricted the thing to such a thing. (S, TA.) And قَصَرَهُ عَلَى الأَمْرِ, meaning, رَدَّهُ إِلَيْهِ, (M, K,) i. e., [He reduced him, to the thing, or affair; or] he appropriated him [or it, restrictively,] to the thing, or affair. (TK.) [Hence,] قَصَرْتُ اللِّقْحَةَ عَلَى فَرَسِى I appropriated the milk of the milch-camel [restrictively] to my horse. (S, TA.) [And hence,] قَصَرْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِى نَاقَةً I retained for myself [restrictively] a she-camel, that I might drink her milk. (Msb.) Aboo-Du-ád says, describing a horse, فَقُصِرْنَ الشِّتَآءَ بَعْدُ عَلَيْهِ وَهُوَ لِلذَّوْدِ أَنْ يُقَسَّمْنَ جَارٌ meaning, So they were restricted to him, that he might drink their milk, during the severity of the winter, afterwards; and he is a protector to the few she-camels from their being suddenly attacked and divided in shares; مِنْ being understood before أَنْ. A2: أَقْصَرَتْ She brought forth short children: hence the saying, إِنَّ الطَّوِيلَةَ قَدْ تُقْصِرُ وَإِنَّ القَصِيرَةَ قَدْ تُطِيلُ [Verily the tall woman sometimes brings forth short children, and verily the short woman sometimes brings forth tall children]. (S, K. *) J is in error in saying that this is in a trad. (Sgh, K.) But IAth also asserts it to be a trad. (MF in art. طول.) 6 تقاصر He feigned, or pretended, (أَظْهَرَ,) shortness; (M, Sgh, K;) as also ↓ تَقَوْصَرَ: (Sgh, K:) or, accord. to some, these two verbs have different significations: see the latter below. (TA.) b2: [And He contracted himself, or drew himself together. (See R. Q. 1 in art. فذ.)] b3: تقاصرت نَفْسُهُ (assumed tropical:) He (lit. his spirit, or soul,) became abject, mean, contemptible, or despicable; syn. تَضَآءَلَتْ. Q. 2 تَقَوْصَرَ, said of a man, (M,) He became contracted; lit., one part of him entered into another part; (M, K;) as though he became like a قَوْصَرَّة, from which word the verb is derived. قَصْرٌ and ↓ قَصَرٌ and ↓ قُصْرَةٌ [like the inf. n. قُصُورٌ] The falling, or stopping, or coming, short of accomplishing an affair; or of doing what one ought, or is commanded, to do; or flagging, or remissness: you say to a man whom you have sent to accomplish some needful affair, and who has fallen short of doing what you commanded him to do, on account of heat or some other cause, مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ المَكَانَ الَّذِى أَمَرْتُكَ بِهِ إِلَّا

أَنَّكَ أَحْبَبْتَ القَصْرَ, and القَصَرَ, and القُصْرَةَ, i. e. أَنْ تُقَصِّرَ [Nothing prevented thy reaching the place to which I commanded thee to go but thy loving to fall short &c.; or to flag, or be remiss]. (M, K *.) And ↓ قَصَرَةٌ, (K,) or ↓ قَصَرٌ, without ة, accord. to the Nawádir of IAar, as cited in the L, and so in the handwriting of Sgh, (TA,) and ↓ قَصَارٌ, (K,) signify Laziness; slothfulness. (IAar, Sgh, K.) An Arab of the desert is related to have said ↓ أَرَدْتُ أَنْ آتِيَكَ فَمَنَعَنِى القَصَارُ [I desired to come to thee, but laziness prevented me]. (TA.) A2: قَصْرُكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كَذَا and ↓ قَصَارُكَ, (S, M, K,) and ↓ قُصَارُكَ, (M, K,) and ↓ قُصَارَاكَ, (S, M, K,) and ↓ قُصَيْرَاكَ, (M, K,) Thine utmost, or the utmost of thy power or of thine ability or of thy deed, (جُهْدُكَ, M, K, [or app., جَهْدُكَ, (see art. جهد,)] and غَايَتُكَ, S, M, K,) and the end of thy case, and that to which thou hast confined or restricted or limited thyself, (S, TA,) [or that to which thou art confined or restricted or limited,] is, or will be, thy doing such a thing. (S, M, K.) It is from قَصْرٌ signifying the “ act of confining, restricting, limiting,” &c. (TA.) And ↓ قُصْرَى also signifies the end of an affair. (Sgh, TA.) A poet says إِنَّمَا أَنْفُسُنَا عَارِيَّةٌ وَالْعَوَارِىُّ قَصَارٌ أَنْ تُرَدْ [Our souls are only a loan: and the end of loans is their being given back; تُرَدْ being for تُرَدَّ]. (S, TA.) You also say, كُلِّ بَلَآءٍ وَشِدَّةٍ ↓ المَوْتُ قُصَارِى

[Death is the end of every trial and distress]. (TA, art. حمأ.) A3: قَصْرٌ (S, M) and ↓ مَقْصَرٌ (K) and ↓ مَقْصَرَةٌ and ↓ مَقْصِرٌ (M, K) The afternoon: or evening: syn. عَشِىٌّ: (S, M, K:) or the first signifies the last part of the day: (IKtt:) or the time before the sun becomes yellow: (JK:) or the first and second signify the time of the approach of the عَشِىّ, a little before the عَصْر: (A, TA:) and the first (S, K) and second (A'Obeyd, TA) and third, (A'Obeyd, S, TA,) [the time of] the mixing of the darkness: (A'Obeyd, S, K, TA:) pl. of the second (TA) and third (S, M) and fourth, (M,) مَقَاصِرُ (S, M) and مَقَاصِيرُ, which latter is extr.; (M;) in the first sense, as signifying عَشَايَا; (M;) or in the last sense; (S;) not signifying, as it is said to do in the K, العِشَآءُ الآخِرَةُ; for this is a great mistake, app. occasioned by F's seeing the passage [in the T] of Az, [or in the M, in which I find it,] وَالمَقَاصِرُ وَالمَقَاصِيرُ العَشَايَا الأَخِيرَةُ نَادِرَةٌ, and not properly considering it. (TA.) Sb says, that قَصْرٌ has no dim.; the Arabs being content to use in its stead the dim. of مَسَآءٌ. (M.) You say أَتَيْتُهُ قَصْرًا I came to him in the afternoon, or evening; syn. عَشِيًّا. (S.) And جِئْتُ قَصْرًا, and ↓ مَقْصَرًا, I came at the approach of the عَشِىّ, a little before the عَصْر. (A, TA.) And العِشَآءِ ↓ أَقْبَلَتْ مَقَاصِيرُ [The times of the mixing of the darkness of nightfall came, or advanced]. (A, TA.) A4: قَصْرٌ [A palace: a pavilion, or kind of building wholly or for the most part isolated, sometimes on the top of a larger building, i. e., a belvedere, and sometimes projecting from a larger building, and generally consisting of one room if forming a part of a larger building or connected with another building; the same as the Turkish كوشك: to such buildings we find the appellation to have been applied from very early times to the present day:] a well-known kind of edifice: (M:) a mansion, or house; syn. مَنْزِلٌ: (Lh, M, K:) or any house or chamber (بَيْت) of stone; (M, K;) of the dial. of Kureysh: (M:) so called because a man's wives and the like are confined in it: (M:) pl. قُصُورٌ. (S, M, Msb.) قَصْرُ الْمَلِكِ [The palace, or pavilion, of the king]. (Msb.) A5: Also قَصْرٌ Large and dry, or large and thick, or dry, fire-wood; حَطَبٌ جَزْلٌ. (M, K.) A2: The necks of men, and of camels: (M, K:) a pl. [or rather coll. gen. n.], of which the sing. [or n. un.] is قَصَرَةٌ: (M:) [see an ex. in the first paragraph of art. سندر:] or [so accord. to the M, but in the K and] ↓ قَصَرَةٌ signifies the base of the neck; (S, M, K;) the base of the neck at the place where it is set upon the upper part of the back: (Nuseyr, TA:) or the base of the neck when thick; not otherwise: (Lh, M:) pl. [or coll. gen. n.] قَصَرٌ, and pl. pl. [or pl. of قَصَرٌ] أَقْصَارٌ: (M:) or this latter is pl. of قَصَرَةٌ, (M, K,) accord. to Kr, but this is extr., unless the augmentative letter in the sing. be disregarded in its formation. (M.) I'Ab reads كَالْقَصَرِ, in the Kur, lxxvii. 32, (S, M, * TA,) and explains it as meaning Like the thick bases of necks, (M, * TA,) or as meaning كَقَصَرِ النَّخْلِ, i. e. الأَعْنَاق. (S.) [See the next signification.] You say ذَلَّتْ قَصَرَتُهُ [His neck or] the base of his neck became in a state of subjection. (TA.) And إِنَّهُ لَنَامُّ القَصَرَةِ Verily he has a large, or thick, neck. (Aboo-Mo'ádh the Grammarian.) b2: And hence, (Aboo-Mo'ádh,) (tropical:) The trunks, or lower-parts, (أُصُول, M, K, or أَعْنَاق, I'Ab, S,) of palm-trees: (S, M, K:) so explained in the Kur, ubi supra, (S, M,) by I'Ab: (S:) sing. [or n. un.] ↓ قَصَرَةٌ: the palm-tree is cut into pieces of the length of a cubit, to make fires therewith in the winter: (Aboo-Mo'ádh:) and [in the TA or] so of other trees: (M, K:) or of large trees: (Ed-Dahhák:) or [accord. to the M, but in the K and] the remains of trees. A2: هُوَ ابْنُ عَمِّهِ قُصْرَةً, (S, M, K,) and ↓ قَصْرَةً, (K,) and ↓ مَقْصُورَةً, (S, M, K,) and ↓ قَصِيرَةً, (K,) [He is his cousin on the father's side,] nearly related; (S, M, K;) i. q. دِنْيًا (S, TA) and دُنْيًا: (TA:) and in like manner you say of the ابن العَمَّة and ابن الخَالَة and ابن الخَال. A2: القُصْرَى (Az, S) and ↓ القُصَيْرَى (A'Obeyd, Az, S) The rib that is next to the شَاكِلَة [or flank], (A'Obeyd, Az, S,) also called الوَاهِنَةُ, (S,) and ضِلَعُ الخِلْفِ, (A'Obeyd,) at the bottom of the ribs, (S,) between the side and the belly: (Az:) or the former is the lowest of the ribs, and the latter is the highest of the ribs: (AHeyth:) or the latter is the lowest of the ribs: or the last rib in the side: or the قُصْرَيَانِ and ↓ قُصَيْرَيَانِ are the two ribs that are next to the طَفْطَفَة [or flank]: or that are next to the two collar-bones. (M, K.) قَصَرَةٌ: see قَصْرٌ: A2: and قَصَرٌ, in two places: A3: and مِقْصَرَةٌ.

قَصَارٌ: and قَصَارُكَ and قُصَارُكَ: see قَصْرٌ.

قِصَارٌ, a subst., The shortening [or clipping] of the hair. (Th, M, K. *) Fr says, An Arab of the desert said to me in Minè, القِصَارُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ

أَمِ الحَلْقُ, meaning, Is the shortening [or clipping] more pleasing to thee, or the shaving of the head? (M.) قَصِيرٌ Short; and low, i. e. having little height; contr. of طَوِيلٌ; (S, M, Msb, K;) and so ↓ قَاصِرٌ, app. a kind of rel. or possessive n., not a verbal epithet: (M:) fem. of the former [and of the latter] with ة: (M, K:) pl. of the former, masc., (S, M, Msb, K,) and fem., (M, K,) قِصَارٌ, (S, M, &c.,) and pl. masc. [applied to rational beings,] قُصَرَآءُ, (M, K,) and pl. fem. قِصَارَةٌ; (K;) ة being added by the Arabs to any pl. of the measure فِعَالٌ, as in جِمَالَةٌ and حِبَالَةٌ and ذِكَارَةٌ and حِجَارَةٌ; (Fr;) or قِصَارَةٌ is syn. with قَصِيرَةٌ, and is extr. (Sgh, K.) b2: قَصِيرَةٌ مِنْ طَوِيلَةٍ

[lit. A short thing from a tall thing; meaning,] a date from a palm-tree: a proverb; alluding to the abridgment of speech or language. (K.) b3: هُوَ قَصِيرُ اليَدِ, [and البَاعٍ, (tropical:) He has little, or no, power: or is niggardly:] and لَهُمْ أَيْدٍ قِصَارٌ [they have little, or no, power: or are niggardly]. ↓ مَقْصُورٌ and ↓ مَقْصُورَةٌ, Shortened; contracted: and confined; restricted; limited; &c.] b2: إِمْرَأَةٌ قَصِيرُ الخُطَى, and الخَطْوِ ↓ مَقْصُورَةُ, [A woman whose steps are shortened, or contracted;] likened to one who is shackled, whose steps are shortened, or contracted, by the shackles. (Fr.) b3: فَرَسٌ قَصِيرٌ A mare that is brought near [to the tent or dwelling], and treated generously, and not left to seek for pasture, because she is precious: (S, K:) and a mare that is kept confined. (TA.) b4: قَصِيرَةٌ, [which is extr., for by rule it should be without ة,] and ↓ قَصُورَةٌ, (Az, S, M, K,) and ↓ مَقْصُورَةٌ, (K,) A woman confined in the house, or tent, not suffered to go forth: (S, M, K:) a woman kept behind, or within, the curtain: (TA, in explanation of the last of these three epithets:) a girl kept with care, that does not go out: (Az:) the pl. of قصورة is قَصَائِرُ:] [and so, app., of قصيرة:] when you mean short in stature, you say قَصِيرَةٌ [only], and the pl. is قِصَارٌ. (TA.) Kutheiyir says وَأَنْتِ الَّتِى حَبَّبْتِ كُلَّ قَصِيرَةٍ

إِلَىَّ وَمَا تَدْرِى بِذَاكَ القَصَائِرُ عَنَيْتُ قَصِيرَاتِ الحِجَالِ وَلَمْ أُرِدْ قِصَارَ الخُطَى شَرُّ النِّسَآءِ البَحَاتِرُ (S, M) or, as Fr relates it, كُلَّ قَصُورَةً (S) [and thou art the person who hath made every female confined within the house to be an object of love to me, while the females confined within the house know not that: I mean those confined within the curtained canopies: I do not mean the short in step: the worst of women are the short and compressed]. And a poet says وَأَهْوَى مِنَ النِّسوَانِ كُلَّ قَصِيرَةٍ

لَهَا نَسَبٌ فِى الصَّالِحِينَ قَصِيرُ [And I love, of women, every one that is confined within the house, that has a short pedigree, among the good]; i. e., every ↓ مَقْصُورَة, of whom it suffices to mention her descent from her father, because of his being well known. (M.) Hence, in the Kur, [lv. 72,] حُورٌ مَقْصُورَاتٌ فِى

الخِيَامِ [Damsels having eyes whereof the white is intensely white and the black intensely black,] confined in the pavilions, (Az, Msb,) which are of pearls, for their husbands; (Az;) concealed by curtains: (Az, Bd:) or confined to their husbands, and not raising their eyes to others: (Fr:) or having their eyes restricted to their husbands. (Bd.) And ↓ نَاقَةٌ مَقْصُورَةٌ, (TA,) or مَقْصُورَةٌ عَلَى العِيَالِ, (Msb,) A she-camel retained [restrictively] for the household, that they [alone] may drink her milk. مِقْصَرَةٌ (M, K) and ↓ قَصَرَةٌ (M, TA) The wooden implement of the قَصَّار, (M, K,) with which he beats clothes: (M:) and the ↓ latter, a piece of wood, (M, K,) of any kind; or of the jujube-tree, specially. (TA.) مُقَصِّرٌ act. part. n. of 2, q. v. and see قَصَّارٌ. b2: [Deficient in liberality or bounty:] one who makes a gift scanty, or mean. (TA.) A poet says فَقُلْتُ لَهُ قَدْ كُنْتَ فِيهَا مُقَصِّرًا [And I said to him Thou hast been deficient in liberality with respect to them; app. meaning she-camels or the like;] i. e., thou hast not given of them nor given to drink from them [of their milk]. (M.) مَقْصُورٌ and مَقْصُورَةٌ: see قَصِيرٌ, in five places. b2: See also قُصْرَةٌ. b3: مَقْصُورَةٌ An ample or a spacious [house or mansion such as is called a]

دار, which is defended by walls: (M, * K, * TA:) or it is less than a دار; (M, K;) as also ↓ قُصَارَةٌ; and is not entered by any but the owner: (K:) such a part of a house is called the مقصورة of a دار, and the قصارة thereof: (Useyd, TA:) any apartment (نَاحِيَةٌ), by itself, of a دار, when the latter is ample, or spacious, and defended by walls: (Lth, TA:) a [chamber such as is called a] حُجْرَة, of a house: (Mgh, Msb:) pl. مَقَاصِيرُ and مَقَاصِرُ. See an ex. voce مُصْمَتٌ. (Lth, TA.) And المَقْصُورَةٌ, (Lth,) and مَقْصُورَةُ مَسْجِدٍ, (Mgh, Msb,) and مَقْصُورَةُ جامِعٍ, (S,) The part which is the station of the Imám [or Khaleefeh] in a mosque: (Lth, Mgh:) so called because confined [by a railing or screen]: (S:) or, accord. to some, مقصورة, thus applied, is changed from its original form, which is قَاصِرَةٌ, an act. part. n.: (Msb:) [and, as used in the present day, that part of a mosque which is the principal place of prayer, when it is partitioned off from the rest of the building: and the railing, or screen, which surrounds the oblong monument of stone or brick or wood over a grave in a mosque; sometimes enclosing a kind of baldachin over the monument.

مَقْصُورَةٌ also signifies The chancel of a church: see مَذْبَحٌ.] And مَقْصُورَةٌ and ↓ قَصُورَةٌ A حَجَلَة [or kind of curtained canopy or baldachin, such as is prepared for a bride]. A3: وَضِحَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. وَضَحٌ, [a verb of which the inf. n. is explained in the Msb by the word درن: if this be not a mistake of a copyist, it app. signifies He, or it, was dirty; or was dirtied, soiled, or besmeared].2 وَضَّحَ see 4.4 اوضحهُ, (S, Msb, K,) and اوضح عَنْهُ, (L,) inf. n. إِيضَاحٌ: (TA,) and ↓ وضّحهُ, (K,) inf.

تَوْضِيحٌ; (TA;) He rendered it apparent or plainly apparent, overt, conspicuous, manifest, notorious, plain, obvious, or evident; (S, L, K;) rendered it clear, or unobscured; exposed it to view; displayed it; laid it open; disclosed or uncovered it. (Msb.) b2: He rendered language perspicuous. (The lexicons, passim.) b3: اوضحت الشَّجَّةُ فِى الرَّأْسِ The wound upon the head laid bare the bone. (Msb,) [See مُوضِحَةٌ.] b4: اوضح لَهُ الأَمْرَ, (S, K,) and الكَلَامَ, (S,) He made the affair, (S, K,) and the language, (S,) plain, or clear, to him. (S, K.) b5: See 1. b6: اوضح قَوْمًا He saw a people. (L.) b7: اوضح He (a man) had white children born to him: (S, L:) and in like manner one says [اوضحت] of a woman. (L.) 8 إِوْتَضَحَ see 1.10 استوضح شَيْئًا He put his hand over his eyes (in the sun, L) to try if he could see a thing, (S, L, K,) guarding his eyes with his hand from the rays of the sun: as also اِسْتَكَفَّهُ, and اِسْتَشْرَفَهُ. (L.) One says اِسْتَوْضِحْ عَنْهُ يَا فُلَانُ [Try if thou canst see him, or it, by putting thy hand over thine eyes, O such a one]. (S.) b2: استوضح السَّبِيلَ He sought or endeavoured to see plainly or clearly the way: syn. اِستَبَانَهُ (Beyd, vi. 55.) b3: استوضح الشَّمْسَ He blinked at the sun; syn. تَحَاوَصَ إِلَيْهَا. (A.) b4: استوضحهُ الأَمْرَ, (S, K,) and الكَلَامَ, (S,) He asked him to make the affair, (S, K,) and the language, (S,) plain, or clear, to him. (S, K.) b5: استوضح عَنِ الأَمْرِ He inquired respecting the thing or affair; sought for information respecting it; inquired into it; investigated it. (L.) وَضَحٌ Light, and whiteness, (S,) of anything: (TA:) the whiteness of daybreak, or dawn: and of the moon; (K;) and its light. (TA.) b2: صُومُوا مِنَ الوَضَحِ إِلَى الوَضَحِ Fast ye from new moon to new moon. (IAth, from a trad.) b3: وَضَحٌ (tropical:) Leprosy; syn. بَرَصٌ. (S, K.) It is sometimes used in this sense, metonymically. (S.) b4: وَضَحٌ A mark in a horse differing in colour from the generality of his coat. You say بِالفَرَسِ وَضَحٌ In the horse is such a mark. (S.) b5: وَضَحٌ A blaze, or white mark on a horse's forehead or face. (K.) b6: What is termed تَحْجِيلٌ in the legs of a horse. (L, K.) and also applied to other varieties of colour. (K.) b9: (tropical:) Milk: (L, K:) thought by ISd to be so called because of its whiteness: or milk that has not been mixed with water: (L:) or that is just drawn. (TA, art. زهر.) Aboo-Dhueyb says, عَقَّوْا بِسَهْمٍ فَلَمْ يَشْعُرْ بِهِ أَحَدٌ ثُمَّ اسْتَفَؤُوا وَقَالُواحَبَّذَا الوَضَحُ [They shot an arrow towards the sky, and no one knew of it: then they returned, and said, An excellent thing is milk]: meaning, we would rather have milk than the blood of him who has killed our companion: they preferred that camels should be given them in compensation. (S, K.) b12: وَضَحٌ A woman's ornament (حَلْىٌ) of silver: (A 'Obeyd, K:) or, of stones; (El-Meshárik;) i. e. of silverstones: (Towsheeh:) so called because of its whiteness: (TA:) pl. أَوْضَاحٌ: (K:) or أَوْضَاحٌ signifies a kind of woman's ornament (حَلْىٌ) made of whole [silver coins such as are called] دَرَاهِم: (S:) and (according to some, TA,) وَضَحٌ signifies an anklet; syn. خَلْخَالٌ (K) b13: وَضَحٌ (K) or وَضَحٌ الطَّرِيفَةِ, (L, but the latter word is there written; طريقة,) Small portions, or parts, of herbage; (L, K;) what he has become white thereof: (AHn:) pl. أَوْضَاحٌ: (L:) or أَوْضَاحٌ مِنْ كَلَإٍ signifies somewhat of herbage that has become white: (As:) Az says, I have mostly heard the term وَضَحٌ, with respect to herbage, applied to the نَصِىّ and صِلِّيَان صَيْفِىّ which is not a year old and has not become black: and on another occasion he says, that it is the remains of the حَلِىّ and صِلِّيَان only. (L.) b14: وَضَحٌ Whiteness predominating over other colours in sheep or goats, overspreading generally the whole body: pl. أَوْضَاحٌ: (L:) or, in the breast and back and face: (T:) you say also ↓ لَهُ تَوْضيحٌ. (L, K [but in the CK and a MS. copy of the K, for دَهْمَانَ, we find دُهْمَانَ].) b8: ↓ عَظْمُ وَضَّاحٍ, (L, K,) and عُظَيْمُ وَضَّاحٍ, (L,) A certain game (of the children of the Arabs of the desert, L,) in which children take a white bone and throw it in the darkness of night, and then disperse themselves in search of it: (L, K:) he who finds it wins. (L.) [See more in art. عظم.] b9: ↓ هُوَ مِنْكَ أَدْنَى وَاضِحَةٍ He is plainly apparent to thee, as though he had become white. (Th.) b10: رَجُلٌ وَاضحُ الحَسَبِ, and ↓ وَضَّاحُهُ, (tropical:) A man as though he were conspicuous, clean, or pure, and white, with respect to rank or quality, nobility, reputation, or the like. (L.) b11: In like manner one says, ↓ لَهُ النَّسَبُ الوَضَّاحُ (tropical:) He is of conspicuous and pure race, or lineage. (TA.) b12: وَاضِحٌ (assumed tropical:) An illustrious man. مُوضِحَةٌ (S, K) and ↓ وَاضِحَةٌ (TA) A wound by which the head or face is broken, that shows the whiteness of the bone: (S, K, TA:) or, that removes the skin which is between the flesh and the bone: the only kind of شَجَّة for which retaliation is allowed: for [some] other kinds there are assigned mulets: and for this too is assigned a mulct, consisting of five camels: but a موضحة may also be in other parts than the head or face; and respecting this, a judge must give his sentence: pl. مَواَضِحُ. كون

1 كَانَ He or it was. A verb of the class called incomplete, (نَاقِصٌ) because, with the agent which it comprises, or to which it relates, it cannot constitute a complete proposition; i. e., non-attributive. The other verbs of this class are, ظَلَّ أَضْحَى أَمْسَى أَصْبَحَ صَارَ, مَا دَامَ مَاانْفَكَّ مَا فَتِئَ مَابَرِحَ مَا زَالَ بَاتَ, and لَيْسَ. Each of these governs its noun, or subject, in the nom. case, and its enunciative, or predicate, in the acc. case; as, كَانَ زَيْدٌ قَائِمًا Zeyd was standing. b2: (The ن in يَكُنْ and the like is often irregularly elided.) b3: كَانَ, divested of all signification of time. is often used as a copula. (See De Sacy 's Gr. Ar. i. 196.) So too is كَائِنٌ; for هٰذَا زَيْدٌ and هٰذَا كَائِنٌ زَيْدًا signify the same. فتح

1 فَتَحَ, (S, A, MA, Msb, K, &c.,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. فَتْحٌ, (Msb,) He opened, (MA,) i. q. فَرَجَ, (Msb,) and [app. he unlocked,] contr. of أَغْلَقَ, (Msb, K,) a door; (S, A, MA, Msb;) and so ↓ فتّح, and ↓ افتتح; (K;) or you say ↓ فَتَّحْتُ الأَبْوَابَ [I opened the doors], this verb being with teshdeed to denote multiplicity [of the objects]; (S;) and ↓ استفتح signifies the same as ↓ افتتح; (S, * K;) i. e. each of these signifies he opened a door; (TK;) you say الشَّىْءَ ↓ اِسْتَفْتَحْتُ and ↓ اِفْتَتَحْتُهُ [I opened the thing; and the former signifies also I sought, or demanded, the opening of the thing]; (S, TA;) and البَابَ ↓ جَآءَ يَسْتَفْتِحُ [He came opening the door; or seeking, or demanding, the opening of the door; the latter being the more obvious meaning]. (A.) b6: Also (assumed tropical:) He sought, desired, demanded, or asked, judgment. (L.) فَتْحٌ inf. n. of فَتَحَ [q. v.]. (Msb, &c.) b2: [As a subst.,] (tropical:) Conquest of a country: (K, TA:) pl. فُتُوحٌ (TA) [and pl. pl. فُتُوحَاتٌ]. يَوْمٌ الفَتْحِ means particularly (assumed tropical:) The day of the conquest of Mekkeh: (L:) and also (assumed tropical:) The day of resurrection. (Mujáhid, L.) b3: (assumed tropical:) Aid against an enemy; or victory; syn. نَصْرٌ; as also ↓ فَتَاحَةٌ. (K.) b4: (assumed tropical:) Means of subsistence, with which God gives aid: pl. as above. (TA.) b5: (tropical:) The first of the rain called الوَسْمِىّ; (L, K;) as also ↓ فَتُوحٌ [which see again in what follows]: (K:) or the first of any rain; as also ↓ فُتْحَةٌ: (L:) pl. of the first فُتُوحٌ, (A,) or ↓ فَتُوحٌ, with fet-h to the ف, (L,) [see the mention of this voce فَيْحٌ,] but MF strongly reprobates this latter form, and observes that فَعُولٌ as a pl. measure is absolutely unknown. (TA.) One says, أَصَابَتِ الأَرْضُ فُتُوحٌ (tropical:) [First rains fell upon the land]. (A.) b6: (tropical:) Water running (S, K, TA) from a spring or other source: (S, TA:) or water running upon the surface of the earth: (AHn, TA:) or water for which a channel is opened to a tract of land for its irrigation thereby: (L:) or a river, or rivulet, or canal of running water. (T, TA.) مَا سُقِىَ بِالفَتْحِ فَفِيهِ العُشْرُ, and مَا سُقِىَ فَتْحًا, (L,) فَتْحًا being here in the accus. case as an inf. n., i. e. مَا فُتِحَ إِلَيْهِ مَآءُ الأَنْهَارِ فَتْحًا, (Mgh, L, *) occurring in a trad., means In the case of that (relating to the several sorts of seed-produce, and palm-trees,) which is irrigated by means of the channel opened to conduct to it the water of the river [or rivers], the tithe [of the produce shall be taken]. (L.) b7: The place of insertion of the tang of the iron head that enters into the shaft of an arrow: (K, * TA:) pl. as above. (TA.) b8: The fruit of the tree called نَبْع, resembling the حَبَّة خَضْرَآء [or fruit of the pistachia terebinthus], (K, TA,) except that it is red, sweet, and round; eaten by men. (TA.) b9: [As a conventional term in grammar and lexicology, A certain vowel-sound, well-known: and ↓ فَتْحَةٌ signifies The sign of that vowel-sound.]

فُتُحٌ a word of the measure فُعُلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ. (S.) You say بَابٌ فُتُحٌ A wide, open, door: (S, K:) or a large, wide, door. (Msb.) And قَارُورَةٌ فُتُحٌ A wide-headed bottle or flash: (S, K:) or a bottle, or flash, having neither a stopper nor a case: (Ks, S, Msb, K:) because, if so, it is open. (TA.) فَتْحَةٌ: see فَتْحٌ, last sentence.

فُتْحَةٌ An opening, or intervening space; syn. فُرْجَةٌ: pl. فُتَحٌ. (Msb.) b2: See also فَتْحٌ. b3: Also (assumed tropical:) A boasting of, or boasting oneself in, or making a vain display of, what one has, or possesses, of wealth, or of good education, or polite accomplishments. (L, K, * TA.) One says, مَا هٰذِهِ الفُتْحَةُ الَّتِى أَظْهَرْتَهَا (assumed tropical:) What is this boasting, &c., which thou hast exhibited? (L.) IDrd thinks it to be not [genuine] Arabic. (L.) فَتْحَى Gain, profit, or increase obtained in traffic; syn. رِبْحٌ; [so accord. to the L; accord. to the copies of the K, erroneously, رِيحٌ i. e. “ wind; ”] mentioned by Az, on the authority of Ibn-Buzurj: a poet says, أَكُلُّهُمُ لَا بَارَكَ اللّٰهُ فِيهِمُ

إِذَا ذُكِرَتْ فَتْحَى مِنَ البَيْعِ عَاجِبُ [Are all of them, (may God not bless them,) when gain arising from selling is mentioned, in a state of wonder?]. (L.) فَتُوحٌ A she-camel having wide orifices to her teats; (S, K;) and so a ewe or a she-goat: pl. فُتْحٌ. (TA.) b2: See also فَتْحٌ, in two places.

فُتَاحَةٌ [see 1, near the end].

A2: الفُتَاحَةُ, thus in the L and other lexicons, without ى after the ح, but in the K ↓ الفُتَاحِيَةُ, there said to be with damm and without teshdeed, (TA,) A certain bird, different from that called الفَتَّاحُ, (K, TA,) tinged with redness. (TA.) فِتَاحَةٌ [see 1, near the end]. b2: [As a subst.,] (tropical:) The office of judge: one says, فُلَانٌ وُلِّىَ الفِتَاحَةَ (tropical:) Such a one was appointed to the office of judge. (A, TA.) b3: And [(tropical:) Litigation, or altercation:] one says, بَيْنَهُمَا فِتَاحَاتٌ (tropical:) Between them two are litigations, or altercations. (A, TA.) الفُتَاحِيَةُ: see الفُتَاحَةُ.

فَتَّاحٌ [An opener: and an unlocker. b2: and hence, (assumed tropical:) A conquerer. b3: And], in the dial. of Himyer, (TA,) (tropical:) A judge; one who decides between litigants: (S, Msb, K, TA:) it is like ↓ فَاتِحٌ, but [this signifies simply judging, and the former] has an intensive signification. (Msb.) الفَتَّاحُ, as an epithet applied to God, in the Kur xxxiv. 25, means (assumed tropical:) The Judge: or, accord. to IAth, (assumed tropical:) the Opener of the gates of sustenance and of mercy to his servants. (TA.) b4: بَيْتٌ فَتَّاحٌ means A wide, or an ample, house or tent. (El-Fáïk, TA.) b5: And الفَتَّاحُ signifies A certain bird, (K,) which is black, and which moves about its tail much, or often; white in the base of the tail, beneath it; and there is a sort thereof red; (TA;) also called أُمُّ عَجْلَانَ: (O in art. عجل:) pl. فَتَاتِيحُ, (K,) to which is added in the K, “without ا and ل; ”

but there is no reason why it should not have ال prefixed to it; and perhaps it should be correctly “ without ا and ت,” i. e. it is not pluralized with ا and ت [as an affix to the sing.], as in the L &c. (MF, TA.) فَاتِحٌ [Opening: &c.]: see فَتَّاحٌ.

فَاتِحَةٌ (tropical:) The commencement, or first part, of a thing: (S, A, * K:) pl. فَوَاتِحُ. (A.) فَاتِحَةُ الكِتَابِ, (Msb,) or فَاتِحَةُ القُرْآنِ, (TA,) [and simply الفَاتِحَةُ, (assumed tropical:) The opening chapter, or exordium, of the Kur-án,] is [said to be] so called because the recitation in prayer is commenced therewith. (Msb.) One says also, قَرَأَ فَاتِحَةَ السُّورَةِ وَخَاتِمَتَهَا (tropical:) He recited the first part, or portion, of the chapter of the Kur-án and its last part, or portion. (A.) And فَوَاتِحُ القُرْآنِ signifies (tropical:) The first parts, or portions, of the chapters of the Kurn. (K, TA.) [See also مُفْتَتَحٌ.]

مَفْتَحٌ A place in which things are reposited, stowed, laid up, kept, preserved, or guarded; a repository; syn. خِزَانَةٌ and مَخْزَنٌ: [and a hoard; syn. خَزِينَةٌ:] and treasure; or buried property; syn. كَنْزٌ: (K, TA:) pl., in both senses, مَفَاتِحُ. (TA.) The pl. as occurring in the Kur xxviii. 76 is said to signify treasures or buried property (كُنُوز) and hoards (خَزَائِن [as pl. of خَزِينَةٌ, not of خِزَانَةٌ]): or hoards (خَزَاوئن) of wealth, which Az says is the most probable meaning: (L, TA:) or it there means keys, as pl. of ↓ مِفْتَحٌ; (Ksh, Bd;) and it is said that they were of skins, of the measure of the finger, and were borne upon sixty mules, (Ksh, L, TA,) or seventy; but this is not a valid explanation. (L, TA.) مِفْتَحٌ see the next preceding paragraph, and the next but one following; the latter in two places. b2: Also A conduit (قَنَاة) of water. (TA.) مُفَتِّحٌ, applied to a medicine &c., Aperient; having the property of opening the bowels: and مُفَتِّحٌ لِلسُّدَدِ deobstruent; having the property of removing obstructions.]

مِفْتَاحٌ (S, Msb, K, &c.) and ↓ مِفْتَحٌ (Msb, K) A key; an instrument with which a lock is opened; (Msb;) [a key] of a door; and of anything that is closed, or locked; (S;) an instrument for opening, (K, TA,) i. e. anything with which a thing is opened: (TA:) pl. of the former مَفَاتِيحُ and مفَاتِحُ, said by Akh to be similar to أَمَانِىُّ and أَمَانٍ; (S;) or مفاتيح is pl. مِفْتَاحٌ, and مفاتح is pl. of ↓ مِفْتَحٌ [as well as of مَفْتَحٌ]. (Msb.) b2: مِفْتَاحُهَا الطُّهُورُ, said by the Prophet, in relation to prayer, means (tropical:) That which is as though it were the key thereof is the thing [or water] with which one purifies himself; being the means of removing the legal impurity that prevents one's addressing himself boldly to the act of prayer. (Msb.) b3: And أُوِتِيتُ مَفَاتِيحَ الكَلِمِ, or مَفَاتِحَ الكَلِمِ, accord. to different relaters, occurring in a trad., i. e. I have been given the keys of words, means [I have been given] an easy faculty, granted by God, for the acquirement of eloquence and chasteness of speech, and the attaining to the understanding of obscure meanings, and novel and admirable kinds of knowledge, and the beauties of expressions and phrases, which are closed against others, and difficult to be learnt by them. (L.) b4: And المِفْتَاحُ signifies also (assumed tropical:) A certain brand upon the thigh and neck (K, TA) of a camel, in the form of what is [properly] thus called. [signifying The act of opening and commencing &c.]: and a n. of place and of time [signifying a place of opening and commencing &c. and a time thereof: and also the opening portion of the Kur-án; as shown voce خَاتَمٌ, q. v.]: and is a commonly-known and chaste word: though it has been said that مُخْتَتَمٌ [which has the contr. significations] is not a chaste word: (TA in the present art.:) this, however, is not correct; for it is a chaste word, and of frequent occurrence. 1 عَزَرَهُ, aor. ـِ inf. n. عَزْرٌ, He prevented, hindered, withheld, or forbade, him; (Mgh, * O, K, * TA;) and turned him away, or back; (Mgh, * O, TA;) عَنِ الشَّىْءِ from the thing: this is the primary signification, from which others, mentioned in the next paragraph, are derived. (TA.) See 2, in eight places. b2: And عَزَرْتُ البَعِيرَ. inf. n. عَزْرٌ, I tied a cord upon the خَيَاشِيم [app. meaning the upper parts of the nostrils] of the camel, and then put medicine into his mouth. 1 طَنِبَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. طَنَبٌ, He (a horse) was long in the back. (O, Msb, TK.) [See طَنَبٌ below: and see also 2.] b2: [And app., in like manner said of a horse, He was long and lax in the hind legs. See, again, طَنَبٌ below.] b3: and It (a spear) was, or became, crooked. طَنَبٌ inf. n. of 1 [q. v.]. (O, Msb, TK.) Length in the back of a horse; (A, O, Msb, K;) which is a fault (A, O, Msb, K, TA) in the male, but not in the female: (TA:) one says, فِيهِ طَنَبٌ (A) or فِى ظَهْرِهِ طَنَبٌ (TA) In him is length in the back (A) or in his back is length. (TA.) And Length in the kind legs [of a horse], together with laxness. (K, TA.) b2: And Crookedness in a spear. (S, O, K.) طُنُبٌ (S, A, O, L, Msb, K) and ↓ طُنْبٌ (L, TA) A tent-rope: (Ham p. 687:) a rope with which the خَيْمَة and the like are tied, or made fast: (Msb:) a rope of the خِبَآء (S, O, L, TA) and of the سُرَادِق [q. v.] and the like: (L, TA:) a long rope with which the سرادق of the tent is tied, or made fast; (A, K, TA;) or, as in the M, with which the tent and the سرادق are tied, or made fast, [extending] between the ground and the طَرَائِق [pl. of طَرِيقَةٌ, q. v.]: (TA:) and also a وَتِد [app. meaning a tent-peg]; thus in the K, and the like is said in the M; those who make الوَتِدُ in the K to be conjoined with سرادق [as though the author meant that طنب signifies a long rope with which the سرادق of the tent, and the peg, are tied, or made fast,] being in error: (TA: [but in my opinion, this reading which is disallowed in the TA is more probably correct than the other: in the CK, and in my MS. copy of the K, instead of وَالوَتِدُ, we find او الوتد: in a copy of the A, او الوَتِرُ, an obvious mistranscription:]) the pl. is أَطْنَابٌ (S, O, Msb, K) and طِنَبَةٌ; (K;) and some of the lexicologists assert that طُنُبٌ is used as a sing. like عُنُقٌ, and as a pl. like كُتُبٌ; (MF, TA;) and Ibn-es-Sarráj says, in one place of his book, that it has no other pl. than أَطْنَابٌ; but in another place he says that it has this pl. accord. to those who give it a pl., thus giving to understand that there is a difference of opinion as to the plural's being allowable, and that it is used in one form as sing. and pl., which is the case: (Msb, TA:) the أَطْنَاب are the أَوَاخِىّ [pl. of آخِيَّةٌ], i. e. the long ropes of the أَخْبِيَة [pl. of خِبَآء]; the short ropes being called أُصُرٌ, sing. إِصَارٌ: the former are the ropes with which the tent is tied, or made fast, between the ground and the طَرَائِق. (TA.) As an instance of a tropical usage, (A, TA,) it is related that when El-Ash'ath contracted marriage with a woman, (A, Nh, O, Msb, L,) namely, Meleekeh Bint-Zurárah, (Nh, Msb, L,) on the terms upon which she should decide, (A, Nh, O, &c.,) and she decided upon a hundred thousand dirhems, (A, Nh, Msb, L,) رَدَّهَا عُمَرُ إِلَى أَطْنَابِ بَيْتِهَا, meaning (tropical:) ' Omar reduced her to the dowry of the like of her among the women of her family; (A, Nh, O, Msb, L;) [lit., to the ropes of her tent, or to the tent-ropes of her family;] i. e., to the ground whereon was built the condition of her family, and over which their tent-ropes extended. (Nh, L.) And another tropical usage occurs in the saying, مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَىِ المَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنِّى إِلَيْهَا, (TA,) a saying ascribed to the Prophet, (O,) meaning (tropical:) What is between the two extremities, (O, TA,) and the two sides, (TA,) of the city is more in need of it than I. You say, مَدَّتِ الشَّمْسُ أَطْنَابَهَا [and اِمْتَدَّتْ أَطْنَابُهَا] (tropical:) [The sun extended its beams and its beams became extended], meaning the sun rose. (A.) b6: See also إِطْنَابَةٌ.

طَنِيبٌ: see مُطَانِبٌ.

أَطْنَبُ Having the quality termed طَنَبٌ; long in the back; [&c.;] (A, O, Msb, K;) applied to a horse: (A, O, Msb:) fem. طَنْبَآءُ. (Msb, K.) إِطْنَابَةٌ A مِظَلَّة; (S, O, K, TA; [in one of my copies of the S مُظِلَّة, and in the CK مَظَلَّة, but, as is said in the TA, it is with kesr;]) meaning a large tent of [goats'] hair. (KL.) A2: And A thong at the head of the bow-string; (As, TA;) a thong that is bound to the end of the string of the Arabian bow: (S, O:) or the thong that is at the lower curved extremity of the bow and that binds the string to the notch: (TA:) or, as also ↓ طُنُبٌ, a thong that is connected with the bowstring, and then wound round the كُظْر, (K, TA,) which is the notch of the bow, into which the ring of the bow-string goes. (TA.) b2: And A thong, or strap, that is bound to the end of the girth, as an aid to its [main] strap when it becomes loose, or unsteady: (TA:) or a thong, or strap, of the girth, that is tied in a knot to the buckle: pl. أَطَانِيبُ. (O, TA.) En-Nábighah [Edh-Dhubyánee (O)] says, (O, TA,) describing horses, and the same words occur in a verse of Selámeh, (TA,) يَرْكُضْنَ قَدْ قَلِقَتْ عُقْدُ الأَطَانِيبِ which is said to mean, [Striking the ground with their hoofs,] the knots of the breast-girths (الأَلْبَاب and الحُزُم) having become loose. (O, TA. [عُقْدُ is here put for عُقَدُ for the sake of the metre.]) b3: One says also خَيْلٌ أَطَانِيبُ, (O,) and غَارَاتٌ

أَطَانِيبُ, (A, O,) meaning (tropical:) [Horses or horsemen, and horsemen making a raid,] following one another (A, O) continuously, without [visible] end. (A.) And رَأَيْتُ إِطْنَابَةً مِنْ خَيْلٍ and مِنْ طَيْرٍ (assumed tropical:) [I saw a number following one another of horses or horsemen and of birds]. (O.) مَطْنَبٌ The shoulder, syn. مَنْكِب; and the part between the shoulder-joint and the neck, syn. عَاتِق: (S, O, K:) and accord. to a marginal note in a copy of the L, ↓ مِطْنَبٌ signifies the same: (TA:) pl. مَطَانِبُ. (S, O.) b2: Also, with the article, i. q. حَبْلُ العَاتِقِ: [see حَبْلٌ and عَاتِقٌ:] pl. as above. (TA.) مُطْنِبٌ [part. n. of 4, q. v. As such signifying] (assumed tropical:) A great praiser of every one. (TA.) b2: and نَهْرٌ مُطْنِبٌ (tropical:) A river that goes [or flows] far away. (A, O.) [See also مُطَنِّبٌ.]

مُطَنَّبٌ A tent, (بَيْت, O, or خِبَآء, S,) and a رِوَاق, (S,) tied, or made fast, with أَطْنَاب [or tentropes]. (S, O.) A man is related to have said to Ubeí Ibn-Kaab, in reply to the latter's advising him to buy a beast to convey him to the place of prayer of the Prophet, مَا أَحِبُّ أَنْ بَيْتِى

مُطَنَّبٌ بِبَيْتِ مُحَمَّدٍ i. e. [I do not like] that my tent should be tied with tent-ropes to the tent of Mohammad: as though he reckoned upon a reward for his many foot-steps to the mosque. (O.) b2: And قَوْسٌ مُطَنَّبَةٌ A bow having an إِطْنَابَة [q. v.] attached to it. (TA.) عَسْكَرٌ مُطَنِّبٌ [perhaps correctly مُطْنِبٌ, q. v.,] (assumed tropical:) An army of which the remotest part is not seen, by reason of its multitude. (TA. [See also what next follows.]) جَيْشٌ مِطْنَابٌ (assumed tropical:) A great army; (K;) an army of which the two extremities are far apart, that is not near to ending. (O, TA. [See also what next precedes.]) مُطَانِبٌ and ↓ طَنِيبٌ, of which latter the pl. is طَنَائِبُ, signify the same; the latter having the meaning assigned to the former in what here follows. (TA.) One says, هُوَ جَارِى مُطَانِبِى He is my neighbour whose ropes (طُنُب) of his tent are next to those of my tent. (Sh, A, O, K. *) حَىٌّ مُتَطَانِبٌ [A tribe of which the ropes of the tents, and therefore the tents themselves, are near together: see the next preceding paragraph]. (A.)

1 طَمَرَ, (S, O, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ (O, Msb,) or ـِ (K,) inf. n. طَمْرٌ, (A, O, Msb, K,) He buried (A, Msb, K) a corpse, in the earth: (Msb:) he hid, or concealed, (S, A, O, Msb, K,) a thing, (Msb,) or wheat, in a مَطْمُورَة, (S, O,) or himself, or his goods, (A, TA,) in a place where he, or they, could not be known. (TA.) b2: He filled a مَطْمُورَة. (S, K.) And He filled up a well. (TA.) b3: Az heard a man of 'Okeyl say of a stallion-camel that had covered a female, قَدْ طَمَرَهَا [meaning He inserted the whole of his veretrum into her; as is indicated by the context]: and إِنَّهُ لَكَثِيرُ الطُّمُورِ; and thus one says of a man, meaning Verily he is one who compresses much. (S, O.) And طَمَرَ فِى الرَّكِيَّةِ, inf. n. طَمْرٌ and طُمُورٌ, He leaped into the well, from the top of it to the bottom. (Msb.) (TA.) A4: طَمَرَ said of a wound, It became inflated, or swollen. (O, K.) b2: And طَمِرَتْ يَدُهُ, the verb in this case being of the class of فَرِحَ, His arm, or hand, became swollen, (K,) and inflated. (TA.) b3: And طُمِرَ فِى ثَدْىِ المَرْأَةِ The woman's breast became swollen. (O.) b4: and طُمِرَ فِى ضِرْسِهِ Pain became excited in his tooth, or his lateral, or molar, tooth: (O, K:) the verb in this phrase [and in that next preceding] is like عُنِىَ. (K.) 2 طمّر, (O,) inf. n. تَطْمِيرٌ, (O, K,) He made his building high. (O.) b2: And i. q. طَوَى [meaning He folded a written paper &c.; or rolled up a طُومَار, or scroll: and (assumed tropical:) He (the Creator) made the limbs, or shanks, of an animal, compact, or round; as though rolled up like scrolls]. (O, K, TA.) طُمِّرَتْ, in a verse of Kaab Ibn-Zuheyr, [referring to a wild she-ass, or to her legs,] means (assumed tropical:) She was, or they were, rendered compact in make; or rounded, as though rolled up like as are طَوَامِير [or scrolls]. (TA.) b3: And He let down a curtain. (K, TA.) One says, طَمَّرُوا بُيُوتَهُمْ They let down their curtains over their doors. (O, TA.) 4 اطمر غُرْمُولَهُ فِى الحِجْرِ He (a horse) inserted the whole of his veretrum into the mare. (K. [See also 1, fourth sentence.]) 8 اطّمر عَلَيْهِ, of the measure اِفْتَعَلَ, [originally اِطْتَمَرَ,] He leaped upon him, namely, a horse, (K,) and a camel, (TA,) from behind, (K, TA,) and mounted him. (TA.) طِمْرٌ An old and worn-out garment: (S, A, O, Mgh, Msb, K:) this is the meaning commonly known: (TA:) or an old and worn-out [garment of the kind called] كِسَآء, not of wool: (IAar, A, K:) and ↓ طُمْرُورٌ signifies the same: (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K:) pl. of the former أَطْمَارٌ, (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) the only pl. form. (Sb, TA.) A2: See also the next paragraph. [Freytag has assigned to this word, as on the authority of the K, three meanings which the K assigns to طُمْرُورٌ.]

طِمِرٌّ (S, O, K) and ↓ طِمْرٌ (O) and ↓ طِمْرِرٌ and ↓ طُمْرُورٌ (O, K) and ↓ طِمْرِيرٌ (K) and ↓ أُطْمُرٌّ (O, K) A horse in a state of excitement (مُسْتَفِزٌّ [so accord. to my copies of the S, as though for مُسْتَفِزٌّ نَفْسَهُ, or probably a mistranscription for مُسْتَفَزٌّ,]) to leap and run: (S, O: [accord. to my copies of the former, مُسْتَفِزٌّ لِلْوَثْبِ وَالعَدْوِ: in the O, مُسْتَفِزُّ الوَتْبِ وَالعَدْوِ:]) or, accord. to AO, contracted [or compact] in make: (S, O:) and (O) a fleet, or swift, and excellent, horse: (O, K:) and the first, that leaps much; as also ضِبِرٌّ: (O in art. ضبر:) or ↓ طُمْرُورٌ signifies longlegged, and light, or active: or ready, or in a state of preparation, for running: (K:) the fem.

طِمِرَّةٌ is applied metaphorically by a poet to a she-ass as meaning vehement in running. (TA.) b2: And مَكَانٌ طِمِرٌّ A high place. (O.) طُمُرٌّ: see طُمَّرٌ.

طُمُرَّةٌ: see طُمَّرَةٌ.

طِمْرِرٌ: see طِمِرٌّ.

طُمْرُورٌ: see طِمْرٌ: A2: and see طِمِرٌّ, in two places. b2: Also A man (O) possessing nothing: (O, K:) accord. to IDrd, a low, vile, or mean, person, [so I render قَانِصٌ, q. v.,] in evil condition: a dial. var. of طُمْلُولٌ. طَمَارِ, like قَطَامِ, [indecl.,] (S, O, K,) a proper name, (IAar, O,) The high place; (IAar, S, O, K;) as also طَمَارَ, with fet-h. (S, O, K.) One says, اِنْصَبَّ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ طَمَارِ [He, or it, descended upon him from the high place]: (As, S, O:) Ks said مِنْ طَمَارَ and طَمَارِ. (S. O.) b2: وَقَعَ فِى بَنَاتِ طَمَارِ (A, K, * TA) means (tropical:) He fell into calamities, and hardships, or difficulties: (A:) or calamity: (K, TA:) or trial: and hardship, or difficulty. (TA.) طُمَّرٌ i. q. أَصْلٌ; as also ↓ طِمَّوْرٌ: (O, K:) so the former signifies in the saying, لَأَرُدَّنَّهُ إِلَى طُمَّرِهِ [app. meaning I will assuredly reduce him to the utmost point, or degree, to which he can be reduced: see a similar phrase voce أَصْلٌ]. (O, TA.) b2: And one says, فُلَانٌ طُمَّرُ شَرٍّ Such a one is evil in the utmost degree. (IAar, T in art. درن.) b3: And أَنْتَ فِى طُمَّرِكَ الَّذِى كُنْتَ فِيهِ, (so in copies of the K and in the TA,) or ↓ طُمُرِّكَ, (so in the O,) i. e. فِى غِرَّتِكَ وَجَهْلِكَ [Thou art in thy state of inexperience and ignorance in which thou wast formerly]: (O, K:) but [SM says] the right reading is فى غَرْبِكَ i. e. in thy [state of] sharpness, and briskness, liveliness, or sprightliness: in some copies of the K, عَزْمِكَ وَجَهْدِكَ; and in some, عُرْيِكَ وَجَهْدِكَ; which are both mistranscriptions: (TA:) a saying mentioned by Fr. (O.) طُمَّرَةٌ, (so in copies of the K and accord. to the TA,) with damm to the ط, and teshdeed and fet-h to the م; (TA;) or ↓ طُمُرَّةٌ, with two dammehs, and teshdeed to the ر; (O, and so accord. to the TK; [and this I think most probably the right;]) The first period of شَبَاب [i. e. youthfulness, or young manhood, &c.]: (O, K:) so in the saying mentioned and expl. by Fr, كَانَ ذٰلِكَ فِى طُمُرَّةِ شَبَابِهِ [That was in the first period of his youthfulness, &c.]. (O.) طِمَّوْرٌ: see طُمَّرٌ.

طَامِرٌ (tropical:) The flea; (S, O;) [because of its leaping;] and (O) so طَامِرُ بْنُ طَامِرٍ: (A, O, K:) pl. طَوَامِرُ. (TA.) One says, أَشْهَرُ مِنْ طَامِرِ بْنِ طَامِرٍ i. e. (tropical:) [More commonly known] than the flea. (A, TA.) b2: And طَامِرُ بْنُ طَامِرٍ means also (assumed tropical:) The remote, who, as well as his father, is unknown: (K:) or the man (S, O) who is unknown, (O,) or whose place whence he comes is unknown. (S.) طَامُورٌ: see what next follows.

طُومَارٌ (S, A, K) and ↓ طَامُورٌ (K) A piece of paper, or skin, on which something is written; syn. صَحِيفَةٌ: (A, K:) [generally, a roll, or scroll;] a paper folded or rolled up (MA, and Har p. 254, each in explanation of the former word,) and written upon: (Har ibid.:) [a مِسَرَّة (an instrument in which one speaks secretly) is described in the S and K as being like a طُومَار: and this word is particularly applied, but perhaps as a post-classical term, to a roll of papyrus, or to paper made of papyrus; being syn. with قِرْطَاسٌ used in this sense: (see De Sacy's “ Rel. de l'Égypte par Abd-Allatif,” p. 109, where ElKindee is cited to this effect:) see also سِجِلٌّ:] طُومَارٌ is said to be a foreign word introduced into the Arabic language; but ISd thinks it to be genuine Arabic, because Sb reckons it among the words that are Arabic in form, and asserts it to be quasi-coordinate to فُسْطَاطٌ: (TA:) the pl. is طَوَامِيرُ. (S, A, K, &c.) [قَلَمُ طُومَارٍ is a modern term for A sort of large handwriting.]

أُطْمُرٌّ: see طِمِرٌّ.

مِطْمَرٌ The builder's زِيج, (S, O,) also called إِمَامٌ and تُرٌّ; (O;) [i. e.,] like these two words, it signifies the cord which the builder extends to make even, thereby, the row of stones or bricks of the building; (T in art. ام;) the builder's cord, or line, with which he proportions (K, TA) the building; (TA;) as also ↓ مِطْمَارٌ: (K, TA:) ↓ the مِطْمَار in the dial. of the people of El-Hijáz is the شَاقُول, (O,) which is a wooden implement, used by the sowers of the land at El-Basrah, (Lth, K, TA, all in art. شقل,) two cubits long, (Lth and TA ibid.,) or a staff a cubit long, (A and TA in art. بقل,) having upon its head [or rather end] a زُجّ [or pointed iron], (Lth and K and TA in art. شقل, and A and TA in art. بقل,) upon which one of them puts the end of a rope, and then he sticks it in the ground, and keeps it in its place firmly by stretching the rope [app. for the purpose of making even a row of seeds or the like]. (Lth and TA in art. شقل.) Hence, (O,) أَقِمِ المِطْمَرَ, said to one relating a trad., means (tropical:) Rectify thou the tradition, and correct its expressions, (O, K, TA,) and trim it, and be veracious in it. (O, TA.) And ↓ هُوَ يَطْمُرُ عَلَى مِطْمَارِ

أَبِيهِ, expl. in the first paragraph. (A, K. *) المُطْمِرَاتُ: see المُطَمِّرَاتُ.

مُطَمَّرٌ (tropical:) Accumulated; applied to householdgoods (مَتَاع): and also applied to property (مَال) [in the same sense]. (A, TA.) b2: And, with ة, applied to a she-ass, (tropical:) Long, and firm in make, (A, O, K, TA,) as though rounded, or rolled up, like as is the طُومَار [or scroll]. (A, * TA.) A2: العَظَائِمُ المُطَمَّرَاتُ, occurring in a trad., (O, TA,) as some relate it, (TA,) means The [great] sins that are hidden, or concealed: (O, TA:) or, as others relate it, the latter word is ↓ المُطَمِّرَاتُ, (TA,) which means that destroy [the sinner]. (K, TA.) الأُمُورُ المُطَمِّرَاتُ (so in two copies of the S, in the PS ↓ المُطْمِرَات, in one of my copies of the S المطْمِرَاتُ, and in the other of those copies omitted,) The affairs, or events, that destroy, or cause destruction. (S.) See also the next preceding paragraph.

مِطْمَارٌ: see مِطْمَرٌ, in three places.

A2: Also A man (K) wearing أَطْمَار [i. e. old and worn-out garments]. (O, K.) مَطْمُورٌ [pass. part. n. of طَمَرَ, q. v. b2: Also] High: and low: thus having two contr. meanings.
