1 عَلَبَهُ, aor. ـُ (S, O, TA,) inf. n. عَلْبٌ (K, * TA) and عُلُوبٌ, (TA,) He made a mark, or an impression, upon it, (S, O, K, * TA,) accord. to Az, like the mark termed عِلَاب [q. v.]; (TA;) and he marked him, or it, with a hot iron; or scratched him, or it, so as to cause bleeding or not so: (S, O, TA;) and تَعْلِيبٌ [inf. n. of ↓ علّب] likewise signifies the doing thus [i. e. the making a mark &c.]: (S, TA: *) and, as also عَلْبٌ [inf. n. of عَلَبَ], the cutting [a thing], syn. جَزٌّ; (so in the CK and in my MS. copy of the K;) or inciding [it], or notching [it]; syn. حَزٌّ. (K accord. to the TA.) لَا تَعْلُبْ صُورَتَكَ i. e. Make not thou a mark upon thy صورة [here meaning face, as in some other instances,] occurs in a trad., as said to a man upon whose nose was seen a mark [of dust, or an impression,] made by pressing hard upon it in prostration. (O, TA.) A2: عَلَبَ السَّيْفَ, aor. ـُ (S, O, K) and عَلِبَ, (K,) inf. n. عَلْبٌ; (S, O, K;) and ↓ علّبهُ, (O,) inf. n. تَعْلِيبٌ; (O, K;) He bound round the hilt of the sword with the عِلْبَآء

[q. v.] of a camel: (S, O, K:) and in like manner one says of things similar to a sword, (K, TA,) as a knife, and a spear. (TA.) b2: [and عُلِبَ seems to signify sometimes It was tied with, or by, a sinew, or tendon: see a usage of its part. n. voce مَتْنٌ.]

A3: عَلِبَ, [aor. ـَ (TA,) inf. n. عَلَبٌ, (K, TA,) It (a sword) became broken in its edge. (K, * TA.) A4: And عَلِبَ, [aor. ـَ (S, O, TA,) inf. n. عَلَبٌ, (TA,) said of a camel, He was, or became, affected by a disease in the two sides of his neck; (S, O;) by what is termed ↓ عَلَبٌ, (TA,) which is a disease attacking in the عِلْبَاآنِ, (K, TA,) dual of عِلْبَآء [q. v.], in consequence of which the neck swells, and becomes bent. (TA.) A5: And عَلِبَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. عَلَبٌ; and عَلَبَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. عَلْبٌ; It was, or became, hard, or firm; (O, K;) and hard, tough, or coarse: (K:) each, said of flesh, or flesh-meat, and of a plant, has the former meaning: (O:) or the latter verb, said of flesh, or flesh-meat, has that meaning; and the former verb, said of a plant, has the latter meaning: (S:) or the former verb, said of flesh, or flesh-meat, means it was, or became, hard, or firm, and thick, or coarse; and the latter verb also, it was, or became, thick, or coarse, and hard, not soft, or tender. (Suh, TA.) And عَلِبَتْ يَدُهُ His hand was, or became, thick, coarse, or rough. (TA.) [See also 10.]

b2: And عَلِبَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. عَلَبٌ; and عَلَبَ, aor. ـُ and ↓ استعلب; said of flesh-meat, It became altered in odour [for the worse], after having been hard, or firm. (K.) 2 عَلَّبَ see 1, former half, in two places.10 استعلب, said of flesh, or flesh-meat, It was, or became, thick, or coarse; not soft, or tender: (O:) or it was, or became, hard, or firm, and thick, or coarse; and likewise said of skin. A2: استعلب البَقْلَ He found the herbs, or leguminous plants, to be hard, tough, or coarse. (TA.) And (TA) استعلبت البَقْلَ, said of cattle, They loathed the herbs, or leguminous plants, and found them, or deemed them, thick, or coarse, (O, K, TA,) being withered. (O, TA.) Q. Q. 1 عَلْبَى, said of a man, His عَلَبِىّ [or rather عِلْبَاآنِ, the former being pl., and the latter dual, of عِلْبَآء, q. v.,] became apparent, by reason of old age: (O, K:) or accord. to the T, his عِلْبَآء

became depressed. (TA.) A2: عَلْبَاهُ He cut his عِلْبَآء

[q. v.], (O, K, TA,) i. e., his slave's علباء: (K, TA:) or he perforated his (i. e. his slave's) علباء, (K, TA,) and put into it a string, or thread. (TA.) Q. Q. 3 اِعْلَنْبَى, inf. n. اِعْلِنْبَآءٌ, He (a man) raised himself; or drew, or stretched, himself up; like as is done on the occasion of altercation, (S, O, K,) and of reviling. (S, O.) b2: And hence, (K,) it is said also of a cock, and of a dog, (S, O,) and other than these,. (S, O, TA,) as a cat, meaning He prepared himself for evil, or mischief, (K, TA,) and fighting: (TA:) [or ruffled his feathers,] or bristled up his hair: it is from the عِلْبَآء of the neck, and quasi-coordinate to اِفْعَنْلَلَ, with ى [for the final ل]: (S, O, TA:) and sometimes it is with ء [in the place of the ى]. (TA.) b3: And one says also, اِعْلَنْبَأَ بِالحِمْلِ He rose, or raised himself, with the burden. (TA.) عَلْبٌ A mark, an impression, or a scar, (S, O, K, TA,) of beating, and of burning with a hot iron, &c.; (TA;) or such as is mangled and bleeding: (K in art. حبط:) [an inf. n. used as a subst. properly so termed:] pl. عُلُوبٌ. (S, O.) Tufeyl El-Ghanawee has used لَعْب for عَلْب in this sense. (IAar, TA.) b2: And A rugged place; (S, O, K, TA;) as also ↓ عِلْبٌ: (K, TA:) and ↓ the latter, (O,) or each, (K, TA,) a place, (K,) or a rugged (O, TA) and hard (TA) place of the earth, (O, TA,) which, if rained upon for a long time, will not give growth (O, K, TA) to any green thing: (O, TA:) and ↓ the latter signifies also any rough and hard place of the earth. (O.) b3: And A hard thing; as also ↓ عَلِبٌ; (K;) each applied in this sense to flesh, or flesh-meat; the former being an inf. n. used as an epithet. عِلْبٌ: see عَلْبٌ, in three places. b2: Also A place where the سِدْر [rhamnus nabeca, or rhamnus spina Christi, a species of lote-tree,] grows: pl. عُلُوبٌ. (Az, O, K.) [Accord. to Forskål, (Flora Aegypt. Arab., p. cvi.,) علب (thus written by him, and also “ œlb,” app. for عِلْب,) is an appel-lation applied by some in El-Yemen to the tree which he calls Rhamnus nabeca rectus.] b3: and A man such that one should not covet, or hope to get, what he has, (O, K,) whether of words or of other than words. ضَبّ, Advanced in age, and hard, tough, or coarse: (S, O:) and applied to a mountain-goat, (O, K, TA,) in this sense; (TA;) or as meaning advanced in age; (O;) or large, or bulky, (K, TA,) advanced in age; because of his strength; (TA;) and [in the same sense applied to] a ضَبّ, as also ↓ عُلْبٌ: (K:) and applied to a man, as meaning thick, coarse, rough, or rude. (TA.) And A hard, tough, or coarse, plant. (TA.) A2: And A camel having the disease termed عَلَبٌ [q. v.]; as also ↓ أَعْلَبُ. (TA.) عُلْبَةٌ A milking-vessel of skin, (S, O, TA,) or of wood, like a large قَدَح [or bowl]: (TA:) or a large قَدَح of camel's skin, or of wood, into which one milks: (K:) or a bowl into which the she-camel is milked: or a قَدَح of wood, or of skin and wood: or a vessel of skin, in the form of a bowl, with a wooden hoop: Az says, it is a piece of skin taken from the side of a camel's hide while it is fresh; it is made round, and filled with soft sand; then its edges are drawn together, and perforated with a wooden skewer, and it is bound so as to be closed, [thus] contracted, by a cord [passed through the holes made with the skewer], and left until it becomes dry and tough; then its upper part is cut off, and it stands by reason of its dryness, resembling a round bowl, as though it were carved out, or fashioned by the turner; the pastor and the rider suspend it, and milk into it, and drink out of it; and it is convenient to the man of the desert by its lightness, and its not breaking when the camel shakes it about or when it falls to the ground: (TA:) IAar says that this word and جَنْبَةٌ and دَسْمَآءُ and سَمْرَآءُ all signify the same: (O:) the pl. is عُلَبٌ (S, O, Msb, K) and عِلَابٌ. (S, Msb, K.) A2: Also A tall palm-tree: (O, K:) [see ↓ عُلْبٌ (voce سَاجِدٌ), a coll. gen. n. used as a pl.; or a pl., and, if so, app. a contraction of عُلَبٌ, by poetic license: Sgh, however, adds,] but some say that it is ↓ عَلَبَةٌ [i. e.] بِالتَّحْرِيك. (O.) عِلْبَةٌ A thick knot of wood, (IAar, O, K, TA,) otherwise expl. as a great branch of a tree, (TA,) whereof is made the مِقْطَرَة, (IAar, O, K, TA,) which is a wooden thing having in it holes adapted to the size of the legs of the persons confined [by it, i. e. a kind of stocks]: (TA:) pl. عِلَبٌ. (IAar, O, TA.) A poet says, فِى رِجْلِهِ عِلْبَةٌ خَشْنَآءُ مِنْ قَرَظٍ

[Upon his leg was a rough kind of stocks of the wood of the tree called karadh]. (O, TA.) عَلَبَةٌ: see عُلْبَةٌ, last sentence.

عِلْبَآءٌ [perfectly decl., because the ء is a letter of quasi-coordination, i. e., added to render the word quasi-coordinate to the class of قِرْطَاسٌ and the like,] The عَصَب of the neck; [app. meaning the upper, cervical, tendinous portion of the trapezius muscle;] (S, O, K; [in all of which, mention is made of the علبآء of the camel, to which it seems to be most commonly applied, and also to that of a man;]) it is one of a pair, and between one علبآء and the other is the place of growth of the mane; (S, O;) Az explains it as specially applied to the thick عَصَب; and IAth, as the عَصَب in the neck, extending to the كَاهِل [or part between the two shoulder-blades]: ISd says that it is syn. with عَقَبٌ [q. v.]: (TA:) [it is also said that] it signifies the عَصَبَة [i. e. tendon, or sinew,] that extends in the neck: (Msb:) or the yellow عَصَبَة in the side (صَفْحَة) of the neck; one of a pair: (A:) and the عِلْبَاوَانِ in a man are [said to be] the two yellow tendons or sinews (العَصَبَتَانِ الصَّفْرَاوَانِ) in the مَتْن [or part next the spine, on either side,] of the neck: (Zj in his “ Khalk el-Insán: ”) [but of all the meanings thus assigned to it, the first seems to be the most proper, or at least the most usual: see Q. Q. 1:] the Arabs used to bind therewith, in the fresh, or moist, state, the أَجْفَان [or sheaths] of their swords, and also their spears when cracked, and it dried upon them, and became strong: (IAth, TA:) the word is masc., (Lh, TA,) or [it is masc. and fem., but] the making it fem. is preferred [though this is contr. to analogy]: (Msb:) the dual is عِلْبَاوَانِ (S, A, O, Msb) and عِلْبَا آنِ; (S, O, Msb, K;) [the former app. the more common, but the latter the more proper;] for the ء [in the sing.] is a letter of quasi-coordination [and therefore properly with tenween]; but if you will, you may liken it to the fem. ء that is in حَمْرَآءُ [of which the dual is more properly حَمْرَاوَانِ], or to the radical ء [or rather the ء that is substituted for the last radical letter] in كِسَآءٌ [of which the dual is more pro-perly كِسَا آنِ]: (S, O:) and the pl. is عَلَابِىُّ. (S, O, K.) You say of a man when he has become advanced in age, تَشَنَّجَ عِلْبَآءُ الرَّجُلِ [The علبآء of the man has become contracted]. (S, O.) b2: The pl. عَلَابِىُّ is expl. in the K as signifying also Lead: and in the S as signifying lead, or a kind thereof: (TA:) El-Kutabee says, “I have been told that العَلَابِىُّ signifies lead; but I am not sure of it: ” and Az says, “I know not any one who has said it, and it is not true; ” (O, TA;) and this is the case: (O:) MF observes that its explanation as signifying lead requires it to be a sing. of a pl. form, or a pl. that has no sing., like أَبَابِيلُ and عَبَادِيدُ: (TA:) in a trad., mention is made of swords of which the ornaments were العلابىّ and الآنُك; (O, TA;) and the coupling of these two words together has led to the supposition that the former means lead; but there is no evading the fact that it is the pl. of علبَآء meaning the عَصَب of the camel. (TA.) عُلْبُوبَةُ القَوْمِ The best persons of the people, or party. (Sh, O, K.) عِلَابٌ A mark made with a hot iron along the length of the neck [of a camel], (S, O, K,) upon, or over, the عِلْبَآء. (TA.) عَلَابِىُّ pl. of عِلْبَآءٌ [q. v.].

مُعَلَّبٌ A sword having its hilt bound (A, O) with the عِلْبَآء of a camel; (O;) as also ↓ مَعْلُوبٌ. (A.) b2: And مُعَلَّبَةٌ A she-camel (S, K) marked with the mark called عِلَاب; (S, O, K;) as also ↓ مُعْلِبَةٌ. (K.) مُعَلِّبٌ One who makes the kind of vessel called عُلْبَةٌ. (S, O.) مُعَلْبَاةٌ One who has a perforation made in her عِلْبَاوَانِ [dual of عِلْبَآءٌ] with the instrument called مِدْرًى [q. v.]. 1 عَرَجَ, (S, A, O, K,) aor. ـُ (S,) inf. n. عُرُوجٌ (S, O, K) and مَعْرَجٌ, (O, K,) He ascended, or mounted. (S, A, O, K.) So in the saying عَرَجَ فِى الدَّرَجَةِ and فى السُّلَّمِ [He ascended, or mounted, the stair, or the series of steps, and the ladder]. (S, O.) And عَرَجَ فِى الشَّىْءٍ, and عَلَيْهِ, aor. ـُ and عَرِجَ, inf. n. عُرُوجٌ, He ascended, or mounted, upon the thing (TA.) And عُرِجَ بِهِ means He was taken up to a high place; as, for instance, إِلَى عَنَانِ السَّمَآءِ [to the clouds of Heaven]. (Ham p. 87.) b2: And عَرَجَ الشَّىْءُ The thing became high, or elevated. (TA.) A2: عَرَّجْتُ عَنْهُ I turned from it, and left it, or forsook it; as also عنه ↓ انعرجت. (Msb.) b2: And عرّج عَلَيْهِ He bent, or inclined, to, or towards, him, or it. (TA.) You say, مَرَّ بِهِ فَمَا عَرَّجَ عَلَيْهِ [He passed by him, or it,] and did not bend, or incline, to him, or it. (A.) [But this may be otherwise rendered, as is shown by what follows.] b3: عرّج also signifies He remained, stayed, abode, or dwelt; (K, TA;) as also ↓ تعرّج. (T, TA.) You say, عرّج بِالمَكَانِ He remained, stayed, &c., in the place. (TA.) And عرّج عَلَى الشَّىْءِ, (O,) inf. n. as above, (S, A,) He remained, stayed, or abode, intent upon the thing; (S, A, O;) as also عليه ↓ تعرّج. (O.) See also عُرْجَةٌ, in two places: and see 2 in art. عوج. And مَا عَرَّجْتُ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ means I did not pause, or stop, at the thing: (Msb: [and the like is said in the Mgh:]) or I did not care for it, or regard it. (TA in art. وبر.) And عرّج عَلَى المَنْزِلِ, (S, O, K,) and ↓ تعرّج, (S, K,) He confined his camel that he rode at the place of alighting or abode, (S, O, K,) and remained, or stayed: (S, O:) or تَعْرِيجٌ signifies the confining the camel that one rides, remaining, or staying, for one's travelling-companions or for some object of want: and عرُج النَّاقَةَ means he confined the she-camel. (TA.) A3: See also 4.4 اعرجهُ He (God) rendered him lame. (S, O, * K.) A2: And He gave him a herd of camels such as is termed عَرْج. (S, K.) A3: And اعرج He had, or possessed, a herd of camels such as is termed عَرْج: (O, TA:) thus in the L and other lexicons: in the K, إِبِلُ عُرْجٌ is erroneously put for عَرْجٌ مِنَ الإِبِلِ. (TA.) [This signification is erroneously assigned by Freytag to 2: and so is that next preceding it by him and by Golius.]

A4: Also He entered upon the time of the setting of the sun; and so ↓ عرّج, (O, K,) inf. n. تَعْرِيجٌ. (O.) 5 تعرّج It (a building, or structure,) inclined. (S, O.) b2: See also 2, in three places: and see عُرْجَةٌ, in two places.6 تعارج [He pretended to be lame;] he imitated the gait of a lame person. (TA.) 7 انعرج It (a thing, S, Msb) bent or inclined; (S, O, Msb, TA;) and so a road: (TA:) and it was, or became, curved, or crooked. (Mgh.) You say, انعرج بِنَا الطَّرِيقُ [The road bent, or inclined, with us]. (A.) And انعرج عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ He declined from the road: (Mgh:) and انعرج الرَّكْبُ عَنْ طَرِيقِهِمْ [The company of riders declined from their road]. (A.) See also 2, second sentence. R. Q. 3 اِعْرِنْجَجَ فِى أَمْرِهِ He strove, or exerted himself, in his affair. (O, K. *) عَرْجٌ and ↓ عِرْجٌ A herd of camels consisting of about eighty: (S, O, K:) or from seventy to eighty: (TA:) or from eighty to ninety: (K:) or a hundred and fifty and a little above that number: (AO, S, O, K:) or from five hundred to a thousand: (As, S, O, K:) or more than two hundred, and near a thousand: (AHát, TA:) or a thousand: (TA:) or many camels: (Az, TA:) pl. أَعْرَاجٌ [a pl. of pauc.] (S, O, K) and عُرُوجٌ. (K.) عُرْجُ: see أَعْرَجُ, in two places.

عَرَجٌ inf. n. of عَرِجَ: (Msb, TA:) [as a simple subst.,] Natural lameness; (S, O, K;) as also ↓ عُرْجَةٌ, which is likewise an inf. n. of عَرِجَ. (TA.) One says, مَا أَشَدَّ عَرَجَهُ [How great is his natural lameness!]: not مَا أَعْرَجَهُ; for from that which signifies a colour, or a quality in the body, one does not derive the form مَا أَفْعَلَهُ. (S, O.) A2: Also A river, or rivulet: and a valley: because of their bending, or inclining. (TA.) عَرِجٌ A camel that emits his urine indirectly: (O, K, TA:) an epithet applied to the male only. (TA. عَرِيجٌ High, or elevated. (TA.) A2: And An affair not firmly, solidly, or soundly, executed. (S, O, K.) العُرَيْجَآءُ [dim. of العَرْجَآءُ fem. of الأَعْرَجُ; and therefore, if without the article ال, imperfectly decl.;] The هَاجِرَة [or midday; or midday in summer, or when the heat is vehement; &c.]. (O, K.) b2: And The coming, of camels, to water one day at noon, and one day in the morning between daybreak and sunrise: (As, S, O, K:) or their coming to water in the morning between daybreak and sunrise, then returning from the water and remaining the rest of the day in the pasturage, and the next night and day, and coming to the water again at night, then returning from the water, and remaining the rest of the night in the pasturage, and the next day and night, then coming to the water in the morning between daybreak and sunrise: this is one of the descriptions of رِفْه: or, as some say, their coming to water thrice every day; but this is strange. (TA.) b3: Also A man's eating but once every day. (K.) One says, فُلَانٌ يَأْكُلُ العُرَيْجَآءَ Such a one eats but once every day. (O, TA.) عَارِج Limping, or having a slight lameness, not by reason of a chronic ailment, but in consequence of some accident that has befallen him. (Msb.) A2: Also i. q. غَائِبٌ [i. e. Absent, &c.]: (O, K:) thus written, with the pointed غ; but [SM says, though without adducing any ex. to confirm his assertion, that] it is correctly عَائِب, with the unpointed ع, [i. e. being, or becoming, faulty, &c.; or making, or causing, to be faulty, &c.; or blaming, &c.;] as in the L. (TA.) أَعْرَجُ Lame, (S, Msb, K,) by nature, (S, K,) or by reason of a chronic ailment: fem. عَرْجَآءُ: (Msb:) pl. عُرْجٌ and عُرْجَانٌ. (S, K.) b2: الأَعْرَجُ is an appellation of The crow; (O, K;) [and] so الأَعْوَرُ الأَعْرَجُ: because of its hopping, or leaping in going, as though shackled. And ↓ عُرْجُ, determinate, and imperfectly decl., means The female hyenas, so called as though they were a قَبِيلَة [or tribe]; (Sh, O, K;) and so ↓ عُرَاجُ, likewise determinate, and imperfectly decl.: (K:) or, accord. to IAar, in the phrase ↓ أَبْنَآءُ عُرْجَ in a verse of Aboo-Muk'it ElAsadee, the poet makes the latter word, which is a pl., imperfectly decl. because he means التَّوْحِيد وَالعُرْجَة; as though he regarded it as a sing. [proper] name: (L: [i. e., accord. to Ibr D, because he uses عُرْجَ as a sing. proper name, curtailed by poetic license from العُرْجَة: if so, this last word seems here to signify a personification of lameness:]) and accord. to him (i. e. IAar), one says ↓ هٰذِهِ عُرَاجُ, meaning This is the female hyena [not hyenas]; the latter word imperfectly decl. (O.) b4: الأَعْرَجُ is also an appellation of A certain deaf, malignant serpent. (TA.) [See also the next paragraph.] b5: And العُرْجُ signifies Three nights of the first part of the lunar month: [perhaps in allusion to the curved aspect of the moon; though on this ground it might also be applied to three nights of the last part:] mentioned on the authority of Th. (TA.) الأُعَيْرِجُ [dim. of الأَعْرَجُ] A certain deaf serpent, (O, K, TA,) of the most malignant of serpents, (TA,) that will not admit of being charmed, and that leaps up like the viper: (O, K:) accord. to ISh, a certain broad serpent, having a single broad leg; like the [serpent called] أَصَلَة: IAar says, it springs upon the horseman so as to become with him on his saddle: (O:) the word has no fem. form: (Lth, O, K:) [but] the pl. is الأُعَيْرِجَاتُ. مِعْرَاجٌ (S, A, O, K) and ↓ مِعْرَجٌ and ↓ مَعْرَجٌ, (S, O, K,) the second and third allowable accord. to Akh, like مِرْقَاةٌ and مَرْقَاةٌ, (S, O,) A ladder, or series of steps or stairs: (S, A, O, K:) or, with the article ال, [but most commonly the first of these with ال,] a thing resembling a دَرَجَة [i. e. ladder, or series of steps or stairs], upon which the souls ascend when they are taken [from their bodies]: it is said that there is nothing more beautiful than it; so that when the soul sees it, it cannot refrain from making its exit [from the body]: (TA:) hence لَيْلَةُ المِعْرَاجِ [the Night of the Ladder; in which Mohammad is related to have ascended from Jerusalem to Heaven, after having been conveyed to the former from Mekkeh upon the beast named البُرَاق]: pl. مَعَارِيجُ and مَعَارِجُ, like مَفَاتِيحُ and مَفَاتِحُ. 1 عَضِهَ, said of a camel, (Msb, K,) or عَضِهَت, (S, TA,) said of camels, (S,) or of a she-camel, (TA,) aor. ـَ (S, Msb, K, TA,) inf. n. عَضَهٌ, (S, Msb, TA,) He, or they, or she, depastured the trees called عِضَاه: (S, Msb, K, TA:) or had a complaint of the belly from the eating thereof: and عَضَهَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. عَضْهٌ, he (a camel) ate the عِضَاه. (S, K, TA.) عِضَهٌ [also pronounced ↓ عِضَةٌ] A lie, or falsehood; and a calumny; (Ks, S, K, TA;) as also ↓ عَضِيهَةٌ: (S, TA: *) the former said by Et-Toosee to be a mistranscription for عَضْهٌ; but it is not so: (IB, TA:) and it signifies also enchantment, (S, K, TA,) and divination: (S, TA:) and its pl., (S, K,) or [rather] the pl. of ↓ عِضَةٌ, (thus accord. to the TA and one of my copies of the S,) is عِضُونَ, like as عِزُونَ is of عِزَةٌ: (S, K, TA:) whence the saying in the Kur [xv. 91], الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ [Those who pronounced the Kur-án to be lies, or enchantments]: (S, TA:) accord. to Fr, [the sing.] ↓ عِضَةٌ is originally عِضَهَةٌ, the deficient [radical] letter being ه; (S, * TA;) for عِضَةٌ and عِضُونَ in the dial. of Kureysh signify enchantment [and enchantments], and they term the enchanter عَاضِهٌ: (S:) or, as some say, the deficient [radical] letter is و, (S, TA,) from عَضَوْتُهُ meaning فَرَّقْتُهُ, (S,) or from عَضَّيْتُ الشَّىْءَ meaning فَرَّقْتُهُ; (TA;) because they divided their sayings respecting the Kur-án, pronouncing it to be falsehood, or enchantment, or divination, or poetry. And one says, ↓ يَالِلْعَضِيهَةِ, with kesr to the ل, [O the lie?] denoting a calling to aid; (S;) or said on an occasion of wondering at a great lie; and with fet-h to the ل [i. e. يَا لَلْعَضِيهَةِ] denoting a calling for aid. عِضَهِىٌّ, applied to a camel, That depastures the trees called عِضَاه; as also ↓ عِضَاهِىٌّ so applied; (S, K;) and in like manner, applied to camels, ↓ عِضَاهِيَّةٌ; (S;) the second and third being rel. ns. from عِضَةٌ, and therefore irregularly formed, or from عِضَاهَةٌ, not from عِضَاهٌ because this is a pl. or has the meaning of a pl.: (TA:) so too عَضَوِىٌّ applied to a camel, (S, K,) and عَضَوِيَّةٌ applied to camels, both with fet-h, irregular. عِضَاهٌ Any great trees having thorns; these being of two sorts, genuine (خَالِص) and not genuine (غَيْرُ خَالِصٍ): the former sort are the عَرْف, the عُرْفُط, the طَلْح, the سَلَم, the سِدْر, the سَيَال, the سَمْر, the يَنْبُوت, the greater قَتَاد, the كَنَهْبَل, the غَرْب, and the عَوْسَج: the other sort are the شَوْحَط. the نَبْع, the شِرْيَان, the سَرَآء, the نَشَم, the عُجْرُم, and the تأْلَب; and these are called the عِضَاه of bows (عِضَاهُ القِيَاسِ [i. e. القِسِىِّ] pl. of قَوْسٌ): the small thorny trees are called عِضٌّ [q. v.]: and such as are neither عِضّ nor عِضَاه, of thorny trees, are the شُكَاعَى, the حُلَاوَى, the حَاذ, the كُبّ, and the سُلَّج: (S:) or, as Az says in the beginning of his book of herbage and trees, عِضَاهٌ is the general name of certain thorny trees which have different particular names: the genuine عِضَاه (العِضَاهُ الخَالِصُ) are those which are large and have strong thorns: such as are small, of thorny trees, are called عِضٌّ and شِرْسٌ [q. v.]: of the عِضَاه are the سَمُر, the عُرْفَط, the سَيَال, the قَرَظ, the greater قَتَاد, the كَنَهْبَل, the عَوْسَج, the سِدْر, the غَاف, and the غَرْب: these are the genuine عِضَاه: and of the عِضَاه of bows (عِضَاهُ القِيَاسِ i. e. القِسِىِّ) are the شَوْحَط, the نَبْع, the شِرْيَان, and the سَرَآء: (TA voce عِضٌّ:) or عِضَاهٌ signifies any trees having thorns; as the طَلْح and the عَوْسَج: or, accord. to some, except the قَتَاد and the سِدْر: (Msb:) or the greatest of trees: or the خَمْط [q. v., for it is variously explained]: or any having thorns: or such as are great and tall, of these: (K:) [حُبْلَةٌ and سِنْفَةٌ are terms applied to the fruit, or produce, of trees of the kind called عِضَاه: see the former of those words:] a single tree thereof is called عِضَاهَةٌ (S, K) and ↓ عِضَهَةٌ and ↓ عِضَةٌ, (S, Msb, K, [but in the copies of the K the last of these is erroneously written عِضَه,]) the radical ه being rejected in the last, as it is in شَفَةٌ; or, accord. to some, the rejected radical letter is و; (AAF, S, Msb; *) opinions differing on this point because of the different forms of the pl.; (AAF, S, TA;) the pl. being عِضَاهٌ and (of pauc., TA) عِضَوَاتٌ (AAF, S, K, TA, in the CK عِضْواتٌ,) and عِضُونَ; (K;) [the second and third of which are pls. of ↓ عِضَةٌ;] or, accord. to ISd, عِضَاهٌ may be an instance of the kind of pl. that differs from its sing, [only] in respect of the ة, like قَتَادٌ, of which the sing. is قَتَادَةٌ, [i. e., what is more properly termed a coll. gen. n.,] or it may be a broken pl., as though its sing. were عِضَهَةٌ: (TA:) the dim. (S, Mgh, K, TA.) b2: Also said of a cloud, aor. as above, inf. n. بَرِيقٌ and بَرْقً and بَرَقَانٌ, It gleamed or shone [with lightning]; and so ↓ ابرق, (JK,) and ↓ تبرّق. (K in art. حلج.) And hence, (Bd ibid.,) بَرِقَ البَصَرُ, (S, Bd,) or بَصَرُهُ, (K,) aor. ـَ (S, K;) and بَرَقَ, aor. ـُ (K;) or the latter has [only] a meaning explained above; (S;) inf. n. بَرَقٌ, which is of the former verb; (S;) accord. to the K, بَرْقٌ; but this is wrong; (TA;) and [of the latter verb,] بُرُوقٌ; (Lh, K;) The eye or eyes, or his eye or eyes, became dazzled, so as not to close, or move, the lid, or lids: (S, K:) or became confused, so as not to see. (K.) بَرِقَ بَصَرُهُ signifies also His eye or eyes, or his sight, became weak: whence بَرِقَتْ قَدَمَاهُ His two feet became weak. (TA.) Also بَرِقَ alone, (TA,) inf. n. بَرَقٌ, (Fr, K, TA,) He (a man, TA) was frightened; or he feared, or was afraid: (Fr, K, TA:) and he became confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right course. (K.) b8: بَرِقَ said of a skin, aor. ـَ (JK, K,) inf. n. بَرَقٌ, (JK,) so in the O, in which, as in the K, the part. n., being بَرِقٌ, indicates that the verb is like فَرِحَ; (TA;) and بَرَقَ, (K,) so in the L, (TA,) aor. ـُ (K,) inf. n. بَرْقٌ and بُرُوقٌ; thus in the L, which indicates that the verb is like نَصَرَ; (TA;) It became affected by the heat so that its butter melted and became decomposed, (As, JK, K,) and did not become compact. (K.) A2: بَرَقَ طَعَامًا, (JK,) or بَرَقَهُ بِزَيْتٍ أَوْ سَمْنٍ (S, K,) aor. ـُ (JK,) inf. n. بَرْقٌ (JK, S) and بُرُوقٌ, (L,) He poured upon the food, (JK,) or put into it, (S, * K,) somewhat, (JK,) or a small quantity, (S, K,) of olive-oil (JK, S, K) or of clarified butter. (S, K.) And بَرَقْتُ لَهُ I made his food [somewhat] greasy for him with clarified butter. (TA.) And أُبْرُقُوا المَآءِ بِزَيْتٍ Pour ye upon the water a little olive-oil. (S.) A3: بَرِقَتِ الغَنَمُ, aor. ـَ (S, K,) inf. n. بَرَقٌ, (S,) The sheep, or goats, had a complaint in their bellies from eating the بَرْوَق: (S, K:) and in like manner, الإِبِلُ the camels. (TA.) 2 برّق بِعَيْنَيْهِ, (JK,) or برّق بَصَرَهُ, (TA,) He glistened with his eyes by reason of looking hard, or intently. (JK, TA. *) And برّق عَيْنَيْهِ, inf. n. تَبْرِيقٌ, He opened his eyes wide, and looked sharply, or intently. (Lth, S, K.) b2: برّقت, said of a woman: see 1. b3: And برّق He decorated, or adorned, his place of abode. (El-Muärrij, K.) b4: بَرَّقْتَ وَ عَرَّقْتَ Thou madest a sign with a thing, that had nothing to verify it, [app. meaning thou madest a false display, or a vain promise,] and didst little (IAar.) b5: Also برّق, (inf. n. as above, TA,) He (a man) journeyed far. (El-Muärrij K.) b6: برّق فِى المَعَاصِى He persisted, or persevered, in acts of disobedience. (El-Muärrij, K.) b7: برّق بِىَ الأَمْرُ The affair was unattainable, or impracticable, to me. (K.) 4 أَبْرَقَ see 1, in eight places. b2: ابرق, (Aboo-Nasr, S, K,) or ابرق بِسَيْفِهِ, (JK,) said of a man, (Aboo-Nasr, JK, S,) He made a sign with his sword [by waving it about so as to make it glisten]. (Aboo-Nasr, JK, S, K.) b3: And ابرق He betook himself, or directed his course, towards the lightning. (TA.) b4: He entered into [a tract wherein was] lightning. (TA.) b5: He saw lightning. (TA.) Tufeyl uses the phrase أَبْرَقْنَ الخَرِيفَ as meaning They (women borne in vehicles upon camels) saw the lightning of [the season, or the rain, called] the خريف. (AAF, TA.) b6: He was smitten, or assailed, or affected, by lightning. (S, K.) A2: ابرقهُ الفَزَعُ [app. Fright, or fear, made him to be confounded, or perplexed, and unable to see his right way: see بَرِقَ]. (TA.) b2: [And hence, perhaps,] ابرق الصَّيْدَ He roused the game, or chase. (K.) 5 تَبَرَّقَ see 1, in two places.10 استبرق It (a place, and the horizon,) shone, or gleamed, with lightning. (TA.) بَرْقٌ [Lightning;] what gleams in the clouds, (TA,) or, from the clouds; from بَرَقَ [in the first of the senses explained above], said of a thing, inf. n. [بَرْقٌ and] بَرِيقٌ: (Bd in ii. 18:) or an angel's smiting the clouds, and putting them in motion, in order that they may become propelled, so that thou seest the fires [issue from them]: (Mujáhid, K:) or a whip of light with which the angel drives the clouds: (I'Ab, TA:) sing. of بُرُوقٌ, i. e., of the بروق of the clouds: (S, K:) or it has no pl., being originally an inf. n. (Bd ubi suprà.) بَرْقُ الخُلَّبِ and بَرْقُ خُلَّبٍ and بَرْقٌ خُلَّبٌ signify That [lightning] which is without rain. (S. [See also art. خلب)]

بُرْقٌ [Lizards of the species called] ضِبَاب, pl. of ضَبٌّ. (IAar, K.) It is app. pl. of بَرُوقٌ or of أَبْرَقُ: more probably, I think, of the former; from the raising of the tail, which is a habit of those lizards.]

A2: Rugged ground in which are stones and sand and earth mixed together, (S, K, TA,) the stones thereof mostly white, but some being red, and black, and the earth white and of a whitish dust-colour, and sometimes by its side are meadows (رَوْض); (TA;) as also ↓ أَبْرَقُ and ↓ بَرْقَآءُ: (S, K, TA:) or a portion of such land (أَرْض) as is termed ↓ بَرْقَآءُ, which consists of tracts containing black stones mixed with white sand, and which, when spacious, is termed ↓ أَبْرَقُ: (JK:) [and] a mountain mixed with sand; as also ↓ أَبْرَقُ: (IAar, TA:) the pl. of بُرْقَةٌ is بُرَقٌ (K, TA) and بِرَاقٌ; (JK, S;) and that of ↓ ابرق is أَبَارِقُ, (JK, S, K,) after the manner of a subst., because the quality of a subst. is predominant in it; (TA;) and that of ↓ برقآء is بَرْقَاوَاتٌ. (As, IAar, S, K.) The بُرَق of the country of the Arabs are more than a hundred; and are distinguished by particular adjuncts, as بُرْقَةٌ الأَثْمَادِ and بُرْقَةُ الأَجَاوِلِ &c. (K.) One says قُنْفُذُ بُرْقَةٍ [A hedge-hog of a برقة], like as one says ضَبُّ كُدْيَةِ (S) b2: [The colour denoted by the epithet أَبْرَقُ: in a mountain, a mixture of blackness and whiteness: see حَقْبَآءُ, voce أَحْقَبُ.]

بُرْقُوقٌ, (K,) with damm, (TA,) [vulg. بَرْقُوق, The plum; or] small إِجَّاص [or plums]; (K;) known in Syria by the name of جابزك: (TA:) and (as some say, TA) the مِشْمِش [or apricot]: a post-classical word [probably arabicized from the Persian بَرْقُوقْ, which is applied to both the fruits above mentioned]. (K.) البُرَاقُ A certain beast which Mohammad rode on the night of the ascension [to heaven]; (S, Msb, * K;) or which the apostles ride in ascending to heaven; resembling a mule; (Msb;;) or less than the mule, but greater than the ass: (K:) so called because of the intense whiteness of his hue, and his great brightness; or because of the quickness of his motion; in respect of both of which he is likened to lightning. (TA.) بَرُوقٌ a she-camel raising her tail, and feigning herself pregnant, not being so; as also ↓ مُبْرِقُ: (S, K:) and ↓ بَارِقٌ a she-camel Putting her tail between her thighs, making it to cleave to her belly, not being pregnant: (IAar, TA:) pl. of the first بُرْقٌ (TA;) and of the second مَبَارِيقُ. (S, K.) The Arabs say, دَعْنِى مِنْ تَكْذَابِكَ وَ تَأْثَامِكَ شَوَلَانَ البَرُوقِ [Let me alone and cease from they lying and thy sin like the she-camel's raising of her tail and feigning herself pregnant when she is not so]: شولان being in the accus. case as an inf. n. : i. e., thou art in the predicament of the she-camel that raises her tail so as to make one imagine her to be pregnant when she is not so. (TA.) The pl. بُرْقٌ is also applied to scorpions, as meaning Raising their tails like the she-camel termed بروق (TA.) b2: Also, applied to a man, Fearful, or timid; (JK;) or cowardly. (TA.) بَروَقٌ A certain kind of plant (JK, S) which camels do not feed upon except in cases of necessity; (JK;) a small, feeble tree, which, when the sky becomes clouded, grows green: (K:) n. un. witIh ة: (S, K:) it was described by an Arab of the desert to AHn as follows: a feeble, juicy plant, having slender branches, at the heads of which are small envelopes (قَمَاعِيلُ صِغَارٌ) like chick-peas, in which is a kind of black grain: its feebleness is such that it withers on the spot when the sun becomes hot upon it: and nothing feeds upon it; but men, when they are afflicted with dearth, or drought, express from it a bitter juice, then work it together, or knead it, with هَبِيد [or colocynths, or the pulp, or seeds, thereof], or some other thing, and eat it; but it is not eaten alone, because it occasions excitement: it is one of the plants that are plentiful in time of drought and scarce in time of fruitfulness; when copious rain falls upon it, it dies; and when we see it to have become abundant, and coarse, or rough, we fear drought: accord. to another of the Arabs of the desert, the بَرْوَقَة is a bad kind of herb, or leguminous plant, that grows among the first of the herbs, or leguminous plants: it has a reed like the سباط [so I render لها قصبة مثل السباط, but I thing that the right reading is, لَهَا قُضُبٌ مِثْلُ السِّيَاطِ it has twigs like whips, agreeably with the description next preceding, in which it is said to have slender branches,] and a black fruit, or produce. (TA.) Hence, أَشْكَرُ مِنْ بَرْوَقَةٍ [More grateful than a barwakah]; (S, K;) because it grows green when it sees the clouds, (S,) or by means of the least moisture falling from the sky: (TA:) a prove. (S.) And أَضْعَفُ مِنْ بَرْوَقَةٍ [Weaker than a barwakah]. (TA.) بَرِيقٌ [accord. to the Mgh and K an inf. n. of بَرَقَ, but accord. to the S a simple subst.,] A shining, gleaming, glistening, glitter, lustre, brilliancy, or splendour. (S, K, TA.) بَرِيقَةٌ Milk upon which is poured a little grease or clarified butter: (ISK, S, K:) or food in which is milk: and such as has a little clarified butter, and grease, put into it: (TA:) or food that has a little olive-oil poured upon it: (JK:) or condiment in which is put a little olive-oil or grease: (L:) pl. بَرَائِقُ; (JK, S, L, K;) with which ↓ تَبَارِيقُ [pl. of ↓ تَبْروقٌ] is syn., (L, TA,) applied to food (S, TA) in which is put a little olive-oil or clarified butter: (S:) or ↓ تَبْروقٌ signifies the grease in a cooking-pot: and water with a little olive-oil poured upon it: and ↓ تَبَارِيقُ is its pl. (JK.) بَرَّاقٌ Shining, gleaming, or glistening, much, or intensely. (TA.) See also إِبْرِيقٌ, and بَارِقٌ b2: فَتًى بَرَّاقُ الثَّنَايَا A young man whose middle pairs of teeth are beautiful and bright, glistening, when he smiles, like lightning: meant to imply cheerfulness of countenance. (TA.) b3: بَرَّاقَةٌ A woman characterized by beauty and splendour or brilliancy [of complexion or skin]: (K * TA:) or, as some say, who shows her beauty intentionally. (TA.) [See إِبْرِيقٌ.]

بَرْوَاقٌ A certain plant also called خُنْثَى [i. e. the asphodel, called by both these names in the present day]: the eating of its fresh, juicy stalk, boiled with olive-oil and vinegar, counteracts jaundice; and the smearing with its root, or lower part, removes the two kinds of بَهَق [q. v.]. (K.) بَارِقٌ Shining, gleaming, or glistening. (Mgh.) b2: Clouds (سَحَابٌ) having, or containing, [or emitting,] lightning. (S.) You say also سَحَابَةٌ بَارِقَةٌ[A cloud having, or emitting, lightning]: (S, TA:) and ↓ سحابة بَرَّاقَةٌ signifies the same [but in an intensive manner: see بَرَّاقٌ]. (TA.) b3: بَارِقَةٌ (tropical:) Swords: (S, K, TA:) so called because of their shining, or glistening: (TA:) pl. بَوَارِقُ; (JK, Ham p. 306;) applied to swords and other weapons. (Ham ubi suprà.) Hence the trad. of 'Ammàr, الجَنَّةُ تَحْتَ البَارِقَةِ [Paradise is beneath the swords]; (JK, TA;) meaning, in warring in the cause of God. (JK.) You also say, رَأَيْتُ البَارِقَةَ meaning I saw the shining, or glistening, of the weapons. (Lh, TA.) b4: See also بَرُوقٌ.

بَوْرَقٌ, (JK, Mgh,) with fet-h to the ب (Mgh,) or بُورَقٌ., with damm, (K,) A certain, thing, or substance, that is put into dough, (JK, Mgh, TA,) and causes it to become inflated; (Mgh;) or into flour; (TA voce بُورَكٌ;) [or this is a particular kind thereof, as appears from what follows: accord. to Golius, nitrum and aphronitrum: but] it is of four kinds; مَائِىٌّ [or the water-kind], and جَبَلِىٌّ [or the mountain-kind], and أَرْمَنِىٌّ [or Armenian], and مِصْرِىٌّ [or Egyptian], which is the نَطْرُون [q. v., i. e. natron]: (K:) the best thereof is the ارمنى; and this is said to be meant by the term when it is used absolutely: this is called also بورقُ الصَّاغَةِ [a term now applied to borax, as is بورق alone, and مِلْحُ الصَّاغَةِ], because it polishes silver well [or because of its use in soldering]: the dust-coloured kind thereof is called بورقُ الخَبَّازِينَ [the بورق of the bakers, or makers of bread]: the نطرون is the red kind thereof: and there is a kind thereof having an oily quality: and a kind consisting of thin butyraceous fragments; and this, if light and hard, is the إِفْرِيقِى: and the best thereof is that which is produced in Egypt: (TA:) bruised, or powdered, the belly is smeared with it, near to a fire, and it expels worms: and moistened with honey or with oil of jasmine, the male organs of generation are anointed with it, for it is excellent for the venereal faculty. (K.) A2: Also A man in whom one does not trust, or confide: pl. بَوَارِقُ. (JK.) بُورِقِىٌّ [or بَوْرَقِىٌّ] A seller of بُورَق [or بَوْرَق]. (TA.) أَبْرَقُ A rope (حَبْل) having two colours; (S, O;) twisted with a black strand and a white strand: (JK:) and in like manner, (JK,) a mountain (جَبَل, JK, K) in which are two colours, (K, TA,) black and white: (TA:) and (so in the S , but in the K “ or,”) anything having blackness and whiteness together. (S, K.) Yousay تَيْسٌ أَبْرَقٌ and عَنْزٌ بَرْقَآءُ [A black and white he-goat and she-goat]: (S, K:) and شَاةٌ بَرْقَآءُ a ewe whose white wool is cleft, or divided, by black flocks [or streaks]: (K:) أَبْرَقُ and بَرْقَآءُ applied to sheep or goats are like أَبْلَقُ and بَلْقَآءُ applied to beasts of the equine kind, and أَبْقَعُ and بَقْعَآءُ to dogs. (Lh, TA.) b2: بَرْقَآءُ is also a name given to An eye; (S, M;) because it has blackness and whiteness mingled in it: (M, TA:) dual بَرْقَاوَانِ. (TA.) And عَيْنٌ بَرْقَآءُ signifies An eye black in the iris, with whiteness [of the rest] of the bulb. (TA.) b3: رَوْضَةٌ بَرْقآءُ A meadorc, or garden, in which are two colours. (TA.) b4: See also بُرْقَةٌ.

(Sgh, K.) إِبْرِيقٌ a Persian word, (S, Msb,) arabicized, (S, Msb, K,) originally آبْ رِيزْ (CK [in a MS. copy of the K and in the TA, incorrectly, آب رِي]) [A ewer, such as is used for wine, and also such as is used for water to be poured on the hands; each having a long and slender spout, and a handle;] a well-known vessel; (TA;) a vessel having a spout (Mgh, and Bd and Jel in lvi. 18) and a handle: (Bd and Jel ibid:) accord. to Kr, a كُوز; and so says AHn in one place; but in another he says that it is like a كوز: (TA:) [it is somewhat like a كوز with the addition of a spout:] pl. أَبَارِيقُ (S, Msb) [and sometimes أَبَارِقَةٌ].

A2: A sword such as is termed ↓ بَرَّاق; (K;) i. e. (TA) a sword that shines, gleams, or glistens, much, or intensely: (S, Kr:) or simply a sword: or, as some say, a bow: (JK:) or it signifies also a bow in which are تَلَامِيع [or places differing in colour from the rest, and, app., glistening]: (K:) thus, accord. to Az, in a verse of ' Amr Ibn-Ahmar: but correctly, accord. to Sgh, it has there the first of the significations explained in this sentence: and it is said, also, that سَيْفٌ إِبْرِيقٌ signifies a sword having much lustre, and much diversified with wavy marks or streaks, or in its grain. (TA.) b2: A woman who is beautiful, and splendid, or brilliant, (Lh, JK, K, TA,) in colour [or complexion]: (Lh, TA:) or, as some say, who shows her beauty intentionally. (TA.) أُبَيْرِقٌ dim. of إِسْتَبْرَقٌ, q. v. (S, K.) إِسْتَبْرَقٌ, (IDrd, S, K, &c.,] sometimes with the conjunctive ا, (TA,) Thick دِيبَاج [or silk brocade]: (Ed-Dahhak, S, K, and so Bd and Jel in xviii. 30, &c.:) or ديباج made [or interwoven] with gold: (K:) or closely-woven, thick, beautiful ديباج made [or interwoven] with gold: (TA:) or closely-woven cloths, or garments, of silk, like ديباج: (IDrd, K:) or thick silk: (IAth, TA:) or a red thong cut from an untanned skin (قِدَّةٌ حَمْرَآءُ), as though it were [composed of] pieces of bow-strings, or chords: (Ibn-' Abbád, K:) it is an arabicized word, (IDrd, S, K,) form إِسْتَرْوَهٌ, (IDrd, K,) which is Syriac; (IDrd, TA;) or from the Persian, (S, TA,) in which سِتَبْر and إِسْتَبْر signify

“ thick,” absolutely, whence سِتَبْرَهْ and إِسْتَبْرَهْ are particularly applied to signify “ thick ديباج, and then the latter is arabicized by substituting ق for the ه: so says Esh-Shiháb El-Khafájee: or the ا and س and ت are augmentative, and it is mentioned in the present art. in the S and K as though this were the case, agreeably with the form of its dim., which is said by J and in the K to be ↓ أُبَيْرِقٌ; for in forming the dim., a word is reduced to its root. (TA.) تَبْروقٌ; pl. تَبَارِيقُ: see بَرِيقَةٌ, in four places.

مَبْرَقٌ [A shining, gleaming, or glistening: or a time thereof]. You say, جَاءَ عِنْدَ مَبْرَقِ الصُّبْحِ [He came at the shining, &c., or at the time of the shining, &c., of the dawn; or] when the dawn shone, or gleamed, or glistened. (K, TA. [In the latter, مبرق is said to be here a meemee inf. n.]) مُبْرِقٌ: see بَرُوقٌ.

1 رَدِفَهُ, (T, S, O, Msb, K &c.,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. رَدْفٌ, (MA, KL,) He rode behind him [on the same beast]; (Az, Sh, Zj, T, MA, Msb;) [and] so رَدَفَهُ, [aor. ـُ (M;) and ↓ اردفهُ; (Az, Sh, T, M;) said by IAar to signify the same as رَدِفَهُ: (T:) [or, in other words,] رَدِفَهُ signifies he became to him a رِدْف [meaning a رَدِيف]; and so رَدِفَ لَهُ; for the Arabs often add the ل with a trans. v. that governs an accus. noun; so that they say, سَمِعَ لَهُ and شَكَرَ لَهُ and نَصَحَ لَهُ, meaning سَمِعَهُ and شَكَرَهُ and نَصَحَهُ: (Fr, T:) [and also] he, or it, followed, or came after, him, or it; (S, O, K, and Ham p. 148;) and so رَدِفَ لَهُ; (Ham ibid.;) and رَدَفَهُ, aor. ـُ (K;) and ↓ اردفهُ; (S, K, and Ham ubi suprà;) and ↓ ارتدفهُ also signifies the same as رَدِفَهُ; (K;) رَدِفَهُ and ↓ اردفهُ being like تَبِعَهُ and أَتْبَعَهُ in [form and] meaning: (S:) [↓ رَدَّفَهُ, likewise, appears to be syn. with رَدِفَهُ; or, probably, رُدِّفَهُ, which seems to signify lit. he was made to ride behind him; &c.; for it is said that] the inf. n. تَرْدِيفٌ signifies the coming, or going, behind; as also تَرْدَافٌ: (KL:) and رَدِفْتُهُ also signifies I overtook him and outwent him. (Msb: [explained in my copy by لحقته وسبقته: but I think that سبقته is a mistranscription for تَبِعْتُهُ; and that the meaning therefore is, I overtook him and followed him.]) One says, كَانَ نَزَلَ بِهِمْ أَمْرٌ فَرَدِفَ لَهُمْ آخَرُ أَعْظَمُ مِنْهُ [An event had befallen them, and another, of greater magnitude than it, happened afterwards to them]. And أَمْرٌ ↓ اردفهُ is a dial. var. of رَدِفَهُ, meaning An event happened to him afterwards: (S, O:) or رَدِفَهُمُ الأَمْرُ and ↓ أَرْدَفَهُم signify the event came upon them suddenly, or unexpectedly; or came upon them so as to overwhelm them. (M.) It is said in the Kur [xxvii. 74], عَسَى أَنْ يَكُونَ رَدِفَ لَكُمْ بَعْضُ الَّذِى تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ, meaning [Perhaps a portion of that which ye desire to hasten] may have drawn near to you; (Yoo, Fr, T, O,) as though the ل were introduced because the meaning is دَنَا لَكُمْ: or it may mean يَكُونَ رَدِفَكُمْ [may have become close behind you]; (Fr, T, O;) the ل being introduced for a reason mentioned above, as in سَمِعَ لَهُ &c. for سَمِعَهُ &c.: (Fr, T:) El-Aaraj read رَدَفَ لكم. (O.) and Khuzeymeh Ibn-Málik Ibn-Nahd says, الثُّرَيَّا ↓ إِذَا الجَوْزَآءُ أَرْدَفَتِ ظَنَنْتُ بِآلِ فَاطِمَةَ الظُّنُونَا [When Orion, or Gemini, shall ride behind, or closely follow, the Pleiades, (an event which will never occur,) I will form in my mind, respecting the family (meaning the father) of Fátimeh, opinions]: (S, O:) cited by Fr [and by J] as an ex. of اردفت in the sense of رَدِفَت: (T:) he means Fátimeh the daughter of Yedhkur Ibn-'Anazeh, who [i. e. Yedhkur] was one of the قَارِظَان. (S, O. [Respecting the قارظان, see art. قَرظ.]) 2 رَدَّفَ see 1, in the former half of the paragraph.3 رادفت الدَّابَّةُ The beast allowed a رَدِيف [to ride it], and was strong enough to bear him; as also ↓ اردفت [accord. to some]. You say, هَذِهِ دَابَّةٌ لَا تُرَادِفُ (T, S, M, O, K) and ↓ لَا تُرْدِفُ, (Lth, M, O, K,) but the latter is rare, (K,) or post-classical, of the language of the people of towns and villages, (T, O,) and not allowable, (T,) This beast will not allow a رَدِيف (Lth, T, M) to ride it; (Lth, T;) will not bear a رديف. (S, O, K.) b2: مُرَادَفَةُ الجَرَادِ signifies The mounting of [locusts one behind, or upon, another;] the male locust upon the female, and the third upon those two. (S, O, K.) b3: And مُرَادَفَةُ المُلُوكِ is [a phrase meaning The acting as a رِدْف, or as أَرْدَاف, to the kings,] from الرِّدَافَةُ [q. v.]. (O, K.) Jereer, who was of the Benoo-Yarbooa, to whom pertained the رِدَافَة in the Time of Ignorance, says, رَبَعْنَا وَرَادَفْنَا المُلُوكَ فَظَلِّلُوا وطَابَ الأَحَالِيبِ الثُّمَامَ المُنَزَّعَا [We have taken the fourth part of the spoils, and we have acted as أَرْدَاف to the kings; therefore shade ye the skins of the camel-loads of milk collected from the camels in the pasture with panic grass plucked up, and so make it cool for us]: (S, * O:) وِطَاب is the pl. of the وَطْب of milk. (S.) b4: [In the conventional language of lexicology, رادفهُ, inf. n. مُرَادَفَةٌ, signifies It was synonymous with it; i. e. a word with another word: as though the former supplied the place of the latter, like as the رِدْف supplied the place of the king. بَهْمٌ رَدْفَى Lambs, or kids, brought forth in the خرِيف [or autumn], and in the صَيْف [meaning spring], in the last part of the period in which sheep, or goats, bring forth. (Ibn-'Abbád, O, K.) رِدَافٌ The place upon which the رَدِيف, or رِدْف rides. (S, M, O, K.) b2: See also the next paragraph.

رَدِيفٌ One who rides behind another (S, M, O, Msb, K) on the back of the [same] beast; (Msb;) as also ↓ رِدْفٌ (S, M, O, Msb, K) and ↓ مُرْتَدِفٌ: (S, K:) the pl. (M, K) of the first (M) is رُدَافَى, (M, K, [in my copy of the Msb ردفى, which is app. a mistranscription, and there said to be irreg.,]) or the pl. of رَدِيفٌ is رِدَافٌ, (S, [so in both of my copies,]) and رُدَفَآءُ: (M:) and ↓ رُدَافَى is used as a sing., syn. with رَدِيفٌ, (T, K,) accord. to some, (T,) as well as pl. [thereof]: (K:) or it is pl. of رِدْفٌ [q. v.]. (T.) [Hence,] one says, جَاؤُوا رُدَافَى They came following one another. (K.) [Hence,] also, A حَقِيبَة, and the like, that is [conveyed] behind a man; [i. e. a bag, or receptacle, in which a man puts his travellingprovisions; and any other thing that is conveyed behind a man on his beast;] and so ↓ رِدْفٌ. (M.) b2: See also رِدْفٌ, in two places. b3: Also A star rising in the east, when its opposite star is setting in the west. (S, O, K.) And (K) A star facing a rising star: (Lth, M, O, * K:) used in this sense by Ru-beh; who terms the rising star رَاكِبُ المِقْدَارِ. (Lth, M.) b4: Also One who brings his arrow after the winning of one of the players at the game called المَيْسِر, or of two of them, and asks them to insert his arrow among theirs: (O, K:) or ↓ رِدَافٌ [so in the M accord. to the TT, but app. a mistranscription,] signifies one who brings his arrow after they have divided among themselves the slaughtered camel, and who is not turned back by them disappointed, but is assigned by them a portion of what has become their shares. (M.) الرِّدَافَةُ The function of the رِدْف of a king, (S, O, K,) in the Time of Ignorance: (S: [see رِدْفٌ:]) a term similar to الخِلَافَةُ: (K:) it pertained to the Benoo-Yarbooa, in that time; because there were not among the Arabs any who waged war more than they did against the kings of El-Heereh, who therefore made peace with them on the condition that the ردافة should be assigned to them and that they should abstain from waging war against the people of El-'Irák: (S, O:) it was of two kinds; one being the riding behind the king upon his horse; and the other, what has been explained above, as from the S, voce رِدْفٌ. (Har p. 321.) رُدَافَى: see رَدِيفٌ [of which it is said to be a syn. and also a pl., or pl. of رِدْفٌ, q. v.].

الرَّادِفَةُ, in the Kur lxxix. 7, means The second blast [of the horn on the day of resurrection]: (S, O, Bd, Jel, and K in art. رجف:) or the heaven, and the stars, which shall be cleft and scattered. (Bd.) [See also الرَّاجِفَةُ.] b2: See also رِدْفٌ. b3: رَوَادِفُ is pl. of رَادِفَةٌ and of ↓ رَادُوفٌ. (K.) It signifies The [shoots that are termed] رَوَاكِيب [pl. of رَاكُوبٌ q. v. voce. رَاكِبٌ] of the palm-tree. (S, O, K.) And Streaks [or layers] of fat, overlying one another, in the hinder part of a camel's hump: those in the fore part are called رَوَاكِبُ. مُتَرَادِفٌ, as a conventional term in lexicology, Synonymous: you say أَلْفَاظٌ مُتَرَادِفَةٌ synonymous words or expressions. (Mz, 27th نوع.) 1 سَهُلَ, said of a place, (S,) or of a thing, and, accord. to IKtt, they said also سَهَلَ and سَهِلَ, (Msb,) and سَهُلَتْ, said of land, (أَرْضٌ,) aor. ـُ (K,) inf. n. سُهُولَةٌ, (S, Msb, K, KL,) It was, or became, smooth or soft, plain or level, or smooth and soft; (S, Msb, K, KL, TA;) i. e. contr. of حَزُنَ and حَزُنَتْ, (S, * K, * TA,) inf. n. حُزُونَةٌ. (Ham p. 675.) b2: اسهل الطَّبِيعَةَ (S) or البَطْنَ, (Msb, K,) said of medicine, (S, Msb, K,) It relaxed, or loosened, the bowels; syn. أَلَانَ, (K,) or أَطْلَقَ. (Msb.) And أُسْهِلَ الرَّجُلُ [The man was relaxed in his bowels]: and أُسْهِلَ بَطْنُهُ [His bowels were relaxed]. (K.) [Hence the inf. n. إِسْهَالٌ signifies A diarrhœa. And اسهل, likewise said of medicine, signifies also It attenuated a humour of the body.] b3: اسهلت بِهِ She brought it forth (i. e. her fœtus, or offspring,) prematurely; i. q. أَمْلَصَتْ بِهِ [q. v.]

&c. (Abu-l-'Abbás [i. e. Th], TA in art. ملص.) 5 تسهّل [It was, or became, rendered easy, or facilitated;] quasi-pass. of 2: (Msb:) or [like سَهُلَ] it was, or became, easy. (KL.) You say, تسهّل لَهُ الأَمْرُ [The affair was, or became, rendered easy to him]. (Msb in art. اتى.) and تسهّلت طَرِيقُ الأَمْرِ [The way of accomplishing the affair was, or became, rendered easy]. (TA in that art.) b2: And تسهّل فِى أُمُورِهِ, said of a man, (K in art سنى,) He found, or experienced, ease, or facility, in his affairs. (TK in that art.) 6 تَسَاهُلٌ is syn. with تَسَامُحٌ. (S, K.) Yousay تساهلوا meaning They acted in an easy, or a facile, manner, one with another; (MA, TA in art. يسر;) or gently; syn. تَيَاسَرُوا. (TA in that art.) b2: See also 3. b3: [In the present day it is used as meaning The being negligent, or careless, فِى أَمْرٍ in an affair.] b4: [As a conventional term in lexicology, or in relation to language, it means A careless mode of expression occasioning] a deficiency in the language of a [writer or] speaker without reliance upon the understanding of [the reader or] the person addressed: (KT: [in one of my copies of that work, this explanation is omitted in the text, but written in the margin; and it is there added that it is what commonly obtains:]) or it means [sometimes such a mode of expression] that a phrase is not correct if held to be used according to the proper meaning, but is correct if held to be used according to a tropical meaning: or the mention of the whole when meaning a part. (Marginal notes in the copy of the KT above mentioned.) [See also تَسَامُحٌ, for which it is often used.]8 استهل, of the measure اِفْتَعَلَ from السَّهْلُ, occurs in a trad., where it is said, مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَىَّ فَقَدِ اسْتَهَلَ مَكَانَهُ فِى جَهَنَّمَ, meaning [He who lies against me] takes for himself easily his place of abode in Hell. (TA.) 10 استسهلهُ He reckoned it سَهْل, (S, K,) i. e. easy, or facile. (TK.) [See an ex. in a verse cited voce أَوْ, p. 123.]

سَهْلٌ Smooth or soft, plain or level, or smooth and soft: (Msb:) or anything inclining to smoothness or softness, plainness or levelness, or smoothness and softness; (JK, M, K;) inclining to have little roughness, or ruggedness and hardness; (JK, M, TA;) and ↓ سَهِلٌ signifies the same. (K.) You say أَرْضٌ سَهْلَةٌ, [meaning the same as سَهْلٌ used as a subst., expl. in what follows,] (S, Msb,) contr. of حَزْنَةٌ. (TA.) See also 2, last sentence. b2: Also Easy, or facile; (MA, Mgh, KL;) contr. of صَعْبٌ. (Mgh.) You say رَجُلٌ سَهْلُ الخُلُقِ [A man easy of disposition]: (S, Msb, * TA:) [and] سَهْلُ المَقَادَةِ [easy to be led]. (TA.) and كَلَامٌ سَهْلُ المَأْخَذِ (tropical:) [Language easy in respect of the source of derivation]. (TA.) رَجُلٌ سَهْلُ الوَجْهِ, (K, TA,) a phrase mentioned, but not explained, by Lh, (TA,) means A man having little flesh in the face, (K, TA,) in the opinion of ISd: and [it is said that] سَهْلُ الخَدَّيْنِ, in a description of the approved characteristics of the Prophet, means having expanded cheeks, not elevated in the balls thereof. (TA.) A2: [As a subst.,] A smooth or soft, plain or level, or smooth and soft, tract of land; [generally meaning a soft tract, or a plain;] (IF, S, MA, Mgh, Msb, K, TA;) i. e. contr. of جَبَلٌ, (S, Msb,) or of حَزْنٌ: (IF, Mgh, Msb, K, TA:) it is one of the nouns that are used as adv. ns. [of place]: (TA:) [for ex. you say, نَزَلُوا سَهْلًا, (a phrase occurring in the TA,) meaning They alighted and abode in a سهل:] pl. سُهُولٌ (MA, Msb, K) and سُهُولَةٌ [of which latter an ex. occurs in a verse cited voce رَأْسٌ.] (MA.) A3: Also The crow; i. e. raven, carrion-crow, rook, &c.; syn. غُرَابٌ. (K.) سَهِلٌ: see سَهْلٌ, first sentence. b2: نَهْرٌ سَهِلٌ, (S, K,) and أَرْضٌ سَهِلَةٌ, (K,) [A river, and a land,] having, (S,) or abounding with, (K,) what is termed سِهْلَةٌ [q. v.]. (S, K.) سِهْلَةٌ Sea-sand: (IAar, TA:) or sand such as is not fine: (S:) or coarse sand, such as is not fine and soft: (IAth, TA:) or a sort of earth like sand, (JK, K,) brought by water: (K:) or sand of a conduit in which water runs: (S in art. رض:) سِهْلَةُ الزُّجَاجِ is sea-sand that is made an ingredient in the substance of glass: (Mgh:) Az says that he had not heard the word سِهْلَة except on the authority of Lth. (TA.) [And Coarse sand that comes forth from the bladder; (Golius on the authority of Meyd;) what we commonly term gravel.]

سُهْلِىٌّ, with damm, [Of, or relating to, and growing in, and pasturing in, the kind of tract termed سَهْل;] a rel. n. from سَهْلٌ, (S, Msb, K,) or from أَرْضٌ سَهْلَةٌ, (Aboo-'Amr Ibn-El-'Alà, TA,) irregularly formed. (S, Msb.) You say نَبْتٌ سُهْلِىٌّ [A plant growing in the سَهْل]. (The Lexicons passim.) And بَعِيرٌ سُهِلىٌّ A camel that pastures in the سَهْل. (K.) سَهُولٌ Laxative to the bowels; syn. مَشُوٌّ; (O, K; in the CK [erroneously] مُشُوّ;) as also ↓ مُسْهِلٌ; applied to a medicine. (Msb, TA.) سُهَيْلٌ A certain star [well known; namely, Canopus]; (T, S, K;) not seen in Khurásán, but seen in El-'Irák; (T, TA;) as Ibn-Kunáseh says, seen in El-Hijáz and in all the land of the Arabs, but not seen in the land of Armenia; and between the sight thereof by the people of ElHijáz and the sight thereof by the people of El-'Irák are twenty days: (TA:) it is said that سهيل was a tyrannical collector of the tithes on the road to El-Yemen, and God transformed him into a star: (Lth, TA:) [it rose aurorally, in Central Arabia, about the commencement of the ear of the Flight, on the 4th of August, O. S.: the place where it rises, in that latitude, is S. 29 degrees E.; and the place where it sets, in the same latitude, S. 29 degrees W.: (see 10 in art. حب: and see جَنُوبٌ:)] at the time of its [auroral] rising, the fruits ripen, and the قَيْظ [q. v., here meaning the greatest heat,] ends. (K.) [بَالَ سُهَيْلٌ, which is a prov., and the saying of a poet, بَالَ سُهَيْلٌ فِى الفَضِيخِ فَفَسَدْ have been expl. in art. بول.] 'Omar Ibn-'AbdAllah Ibn-Abee-Rabeea says respecting Suheyl Ibn-'Abd-Er-Rahmán Ibn-'Owf, and his taking in marriage Eth-Thureiyà El-'Ableeyeh of the Benoo-Umeiyeh, deeming their coming together to be a strange thing by likening them to the stars named Eth-Thureiyà and Suheyl, أَيُّهَا المُنْكِحُ الثُّرَيَّا سُهَيْلًا عَمْرَكَ اللّٰهَ كَيْفَ يَلْتَقِيَانِ

هِىَ شَامِيَّةٌ إِذَا مَا اسْتَقَلَّتْ وَسُهَيْلٌ إِذَا اسْتَقَلَّ يَمَانِى

[O thou marrier of Eth-Thureiyà to Suheyl, by thine acknowledgment of the everlasting existence of God, (or, as it sometimes means, I ask God to prolong thy life,) tell me, how can they meet together? She is of the northern region when she rises, and Suheyl, when he rises, is of the southern region]. (Har p. 276. [But I have substituted اللّٰهَ for اللّٰهُ, and يَمَانِى for يَمَانٍ. See also the notice of the poet above named in the work of Ibn-Khillikán: (I have the express authority of the TA for thus writing this name:) and De Sacy's Anthol. Gramm. Arabe, p. 139.]) [Freytag states that قَدَمَا سُهَيْلٍ is the name of Two stars which are behind Canopus; on the authority of Meyd: and also mentions the name of سهيل الشام, and سهيل الفرد, as given to Certain stars in the constellation Anguis; adding that Canopus is distinguished from سهيل الشام by the name of سهيل اليمن.] The name of أُخْتَاسُهَيْلٍ

العَبُورُ [or Sirius] and الشِّعْرَى الغُمَيْصَآءُ [or Procyon], together. (S and K in art. شعر.) [See also حَضَارِ and الوَزْنُ.]

أَكْذَبُ مِنْ سُهَيْلَةَ is a prov., (O, K,) said to mean [More lying than] the wind: (O:) or سهيلة was a certain liar. (K.) مُسْهَلٌ Relaxed, or loosened, by medicine; applied to the belly: no credit is to be given to people's saying مَسْهُولٌ, unless an express authority be found for it. (Msb.) مُسْهِلٌ: see سَهُولٌ. [Also an attenuant medicine.]

1 يَقِظَ, aor. ـَ (Msb, K,) and يَقُظَ, aor. ـُ (Lh, K;) and in the Msb is added يَقَظَ, i. e. like ضَرَبَ, which is strange; (TA;) [but this I do not find in my copy of the Msb;] inf. n. [of the first] يَقَظٌ (Msb, K) and يَقَظَةٌ, (Msb, TA,) or the latter is a simple subst., (S,) and [of the second] يَقَاظَةٌ; (Msb, K;) He waked, or woke; did not sleep, or was not sleeping. يَقِظٌ and ↓ يَقْظٌ and ↓ يَقْظَانٌ A man waking, or awake: not sleeping: (K:) or the last has this signification; (S, Msb;) and its fem. is يَقْظَى: (O, Msb, K:) the pl. (K, &c.) of the first (IB, Msb) and second, (IB,) or of the first only, for the second has no broken pl., because of the rareness of فَعُلٌ as the measure of an epithet, (Sb, TA,) is أَيْقَاظٌ, (Sb, IB, Msb, K,) which is applied to women as well as to men; (O;) and the pl. of يقظان is يِقَاظٌ; (IB;) and the pl. of يقظى is يَقَاظَى. (K.) b2: And the first (ISk, S, Msb) and ↓ second (ISk, S) (tropical:) A man vigilant, wary, cautious, or in a state of preparation; (S, Msb;) having his attention roused: (S:) and intelligent: (Msb:) or a man having his attention much roused, very vigilant, and possessing knowledge and intelligence. يَقَظَةٌ A state of waking, or being awake; (S, Mgh, K;) as also ↓ يَقْظَةٌ, occurring in the saying of the Et-Tihámee, العَيْشُ نَوْمٌ وَالْمَنِيَّةُ يَقْظَةٌ وَالْمَرْءُ بَيْنَهُمَا خَيَالٌ سَارِى

[Life is a state of sleep, and death is a state of waking; and man between the two is a night journeying phantom]; but most hold it to be used only by poetic license. (TA.) يَقْظَانُ: see يَقِظٌ, in two places. b2: أَبُو اليَقْظَانِ The domestic cock. (K.) مَا رَأَيْتُ أَيْقَظَ مِنْهُ (tropical:) [I have not seen any more vigilant, wary, or cautious, than he].
