1 غَبَّتِ الإِبِلُ, (S,) or المَاشِيَةُ, (Msb, K,) aor. ـِ inf. n. غَبٌّ (S, Msb, K) and غُبُوبٌ, (Msb, K,) The camels, (S,) or cattle, (Msb, K,) came to water, (S,) or drank, (Msb, K,) on alternate days; one day and not the next day. (S, Msb, K.) b2: Hence, (IAth, TA,) غَبَّ said of a man means He came visiting at intervals of some days, or after some days. (AA, IAth, TA.) [See also غِبٌّ: and see غُبَيْسٌ.] b3: And غَبَّ عَنِ القَوْمِ, (Ks, S, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ the verb in this case being of the class of قَتَلَ, [but this is contr. to analogy, as well as to the derivation,] inf. n. غِبٌّ, with kesr, He came to the people, or party, day after day: (Msb:) or, as also القَوْمَ ↓ اغبّ, he came to the people, or party, on alternate days, coming one day and not the next: (Ks, S, K:) or he came to them once in two days or more. (TA.) It is said in a trad., فِى عِيَادَةِ المَرِيضِ ↓ أَغِبُّوا وَأَرْبِعُوا Visit ye the sick on alternate days and after intervals of two days: (S, TA:) not every day, lest he find your visits to be troublesome. (TA. [See also art. ربع.]) And you say, ↓ أَغْبَبْتُهُ, inf. n. إِغْبَابٌ, meaning I visited him [once] in every week. (A.) b4: And hence غَبَّتْ said of a fever. (Msb.) غَبَّتِ الحُمَّى and ↓ أَغَبَّت signify the same: (S:) you say, غَبَّتْ عَلَيْهِ الحُمَّى, The fever came upon him, (Msb,) or attacked him, (K,) one day and intermitted one day; (Msb, K;) as also ↓ أَغَبَّتْهُ and ↓ أَغَبَّتْ عَلَيْهِ. (K.) [See also غِبٌّ.] b5: You say also, غَبَّ عِنْدَنَا, (S, L, K,) and ↓ اغبّ, (L, K,) He passed the night, or a night, at our abode. (S, L, K.) Hence the saying, رُوَيْدَ الشِّعْرَ يَغِبَّ [so accord. to the TA, حَتَّى being understood, accord. to the explanation of Meyd, but in the CK, and in one of my copies of the S, and in Freytag's Arab. Prov. i. 522, يَغِبُّ,] (S, K,) i. e. Leave thou the poetry until some days shall have passed, that thou mayest see what will be its result, whether it will be praised or dispraised: (Meyd, TA:) or it may be from غَبَّت said of a fever, and may thus mean, leave thou the poetry to be kept back from people, [or to be intermitted,] i. e. do not repeat it to people in an uninterrupted manner, lest they become weary. (Meyd. [See also art. رود.]) b6: And [hence] غَبَّ, (T, S, L, Msb, K,) aor. ـِ (L, Msb,) inf. n. غَبٌّ and غِبٌّ and غُبُوبٌ and غُبُوبَةٌ, (L,) said of food, (L, Msb,) and of dates, or especially of flesh-meat as some say, (L,) It remained throughout a night, whether it became corrupt or not: (L, Msb:) and, said of food, it became altered [for the worse] in its odour: (L:) or, said of flesh-meat, it became stinking: (T, S, K;) as also ↓ اغبّ: (T, K:) and it (a thing) became corrupt. (TA. [See also 2.]) b7: غَبَّتِ الأُمُورُ means The affairs, or events, came to, or arrived at, their ends, conclusions, latter or last parts or states, issues, or results. (S, TA.) b8: And غَبَّ الشَّئْ فِى نَفْسِهِ, aor. ـِ inf. n. غَبٌّ, [app. meaning The thing came into his mind,] is a phrase mentioned by Th. (TA.) 2 غبّب فِى الحَاجَةِ, (S, O,) inf. n. تَغْبِيبٌ, (K,) He was remiss; or did not exert himself, or act vigorously or strenuously; (S, O, K;) in the needful affair: (S, O:) [and] so فِيهَا ↓ تغبّب [if not a mistranscription]. (Thus in a copy of the A.) [Hence,] كَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ يُغَبِّبُ مِنْ هُلْكِ المُسْلِمِينَ, (TA,) or عَنْ هَلَاكِ المسلمين, (thus in the O,) (tropical:) He wrote to him not acquainting him with the great number that had perished of the Muslims: (O, TA:) a metaphorical mode of expression; as though he were remiss, or fell short, in making known the essential state of the case. (TA, from a trad.) b2: And غبّب signifies also It (a thing) became very corrupt. (TA. [See also 1, last sentence but two.]) A2: غبّب الشَّاةَ, (O, L, *) inf. n. as above, (L, K,) He (a wolf) seized the sheep, or goat, by its throat, (O, K,) and fixed his canine teeth in it: (O:) or attacked the sheep, or goat, and broke its neck: and also left it with some remains of life in it. (L.) And غبّب الذِّئْبُ فِى الغَنَمِ The wolf made, or did, mischief among the sheep, or goats. (TA.) b2: And [hence, app.,] غبّب عَنِ القَوْمِ, (S, O,) inf. n. as above, (K,) He repelled from, or defended, the people, or party: (S, O, K:) so say Ks and Th. (TA.) 4 أَغْبَ3َ see 1, in seven places. b2: You say also, لَا يُغِبُّنَا عَطَاؤُهُ His gift will not come to us on alternate days, but will come every day. (S, O, K. *) b3: And اغبّت الحَلُوبَةُ The milch camel yielded milk on alternate days. (A.) And اغبّت الإِبِلُ The camels did not yield milk every day. (TA.) b4: See again 1, last sentence but two.

A2: اغبّ الإِبِلَ He watered the camels on alternate days: (S, O, Msb: *) from غِبٌّ [q. v.]. (S, O.) A3: And أَغَبَّنِى is said by Th to signify وَقَعَ بِى

R. Q. 1 غَبْغَبَ He acted dishonestly in buying and selling. (AA, TA.) غُبٌّ A sea dashing so that it goes far, or runs, upon the land: (JK, K, TA:) pl. غُبَّانٌ. (TA.) b2: And Depressed land: pl. [of pauc.] أَغْبَابٌ and [of mult.] غُبُوبٌ (K, TA) and غُبَّانٌ. (TA.) غِبٌّ [a subst., like ظِمْءٌ,] A coming (of camels, S, O) to water on alternate days; coming to the water one day and not the next day: (S, O, K:) or after [being kept from it] a day and two nights: or pasturing one day and coming to the water the next day; and this is the غِبّ of the ass. (TA.) [And وِرْدُ الغِبِّ signifies The coming of camels to the water in the second of two nights (as is shown by the context of a passage in which it occurs in the S and O and K voce طَلَقٌ), or in the second of two days.] But the saying of a rájiz, وَحُمَّرَاتٌ شُرْبُهُنَّ غِبُّ means And hummarahs [a species of birds] whose drinking is every hour or every little while (كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ). (S, O.) b2: Also [for سَيْرُ غِبٍّ] A journey of two days [whereof one is without any watering of the camels; i. e. in the case of which they are watered only on the first and third of three days]. (TA in art. نبج.) b3: And A visiting once in every week: (S, O, K:) so says El-Hasan: (S, O:) or at intervals of some days: after some days: (AA, IAth: [see also its verb:]) from the same word used in relation to camels. (IAth.) One says, زُرْ غِبًّا تَزْدَدْ حُبًّا [or, accord. to common usage, حِبًّا, to assimilate it to غِبًّا, Visit once a week, or at intervals of some days; not frequently, or not every day: so thou shalt have more love: a prov., respecting which see Freytag's Arab. Prov. i. 587; where غُبًّا is put for غِبًّا]. (S, O.) [See another ex. voce تَرَجَّلَ, last sentence.] The saying of Zeyd-el-Fawáris يَرَانِى العَدُوُّ بَعْدَ غِبِّ لِقَائِهِ means [The enemy will see me] after the day of meeting with him by a day. (Ham p. 732.) b4: And The coming, or attacking, of a fever one day and intermitting one day: from the same word used in relation to camels. (S, O, Msb.) b5: and A tertian fever; that attacks one day and intermits one day: (K, TA:) you say حُمَّى غِبٌّ [a tertian fever]; using it as an epithet: (TA:) and حُمَّى الغِبِّ. (Msb in art. ثلث.) b6: And The end; conclusion; latter, or last, part or state; issue; or result; syn. عَاقِبَةٌ, (S, A, MA, O, Msb, K,) and آخِرٌ; (S, * O, * TA;) of an affair, (S, A, O, Msb,) of any kind, (S, O,) or of a thing; (K;) as also ↓ مَغَبَّةٌ, (MA, O, Msb, K,) and ↓ مِغَبٌّ. And [hence] غِبَّ means After; syn. بَعْدَ: thus in the phrases غِبَّ الأَذَانِ [After the call to prayer] and غِبَّ السَّلَامِ [After salutation or the salutation]: and one says, غِبَّ الصَّبَاحِ يَحْمَدُ القَوْمُ السُّرَى

[After daybreak, the party commend nightjourneying: but more commonly, عِنْدَ الصَّبَاحِ: see art. سرى]. (TA.) b7: مَآءٌ غِبٌّ means Distant water: (A, TA:) and مِيَاهٌ أَغْبَابٌ distant waters. (A, K, TA.) غُبَّةٌ A sufficiency of the means of subsistence: (O, K, TA:) and so غُضَّةٌ. (TA.) A2: And غُبَّةُ, (S, O,) without ال, (K,) [and imperfectly decl.,] is the name of An eaglet that belonged to the Benoo-Yeshkur, (S, O, K,) and to which a certain story, or tradition, relates. (S, O,) غَبَبٌ and ↓ غَبْغَبٌ The flesh that hangs down under the part beneath the chin and lower jaw: (K;) or what hangs down beneath that part of an ox or cow [i. e. the dewlap], and beneath the beak of the cock: (S, O:) and the wrinkled skin of the part where the lower hairs of the chin grow: and the former word, what hangs down under the part beneath the lower jaw of the ox or cow and of the sheep or goat: and the غبغب is [what hangs down under the part beneath the lower mandible] of the cock and of the bull [i. e. the wattle of the cock and the dewlap of the bull]: (Lth, TA:) and this is also used in relation to an old woman: (Ks, TA:) and, metaphorically, in relation to the chameleon: and in like manner in relation to the stallion-camel, [as meaning the part below the under jaw,] as the camel has really no غبغب: (TA:) [the pl. of غَبَبٌ is أَغْبَابٌ: see طِمْطِمٌ.]

A2: Also A small and narrow water-course, from the hard and elevated part of a mountain, or of a tract of land: or in plain. or level, land: (TA:) and a watercourse that is not deep, and in which are [trees of the species called] طَلْح: pl. [of pauc.] أَغِبَّةٌ and [of mult.]

غُبَّانٌ. (JK.) A3: [And An affair or a business (“ res, negotium ”). (Freytag, from the Deewán of Jereer.)]

غَبِيبَةٌ Milk (S, O, K) of sheep or goats (S, O) drawn in the early morning, upon which other is milked at night, and which is then churned (S, O, K) on the morrow: (S, O:) [and] accord. to IAar, camel's milk such as is termed مُرَوَّب [q. v.]: and the milk that is termed رَائِب [q. v.]: (TA:) A'Obeyd is related on the authority of Sh to have assigned this last meaning to غبيبة (TA, voce غَبِيبَةٌ.) غُبِّيَّةٌ and غِبِّيَّةٌ: see غُبِّيَّةٌ, in art. غب.

غَابٌّ [part. n. of غَبَّ]. You say إِبِلٌ غَابَّةٌ and غَوَابُّ Camels coming to water, or drinking, on alternate days. (As, S, O, K.) b2: And Flesh-meat that has remained throughout a night: (S, O:) or stinking flesh-meat: (TA:) or food, and dates, and, as also ↓ غَبِيبٌ, flesh-meat, that has remained throughout a night, whether it have become corrupt or not: (L:) and applied also to bread. (S and K in art. بيت.) b3: And نَجْمٌ غَابٌّ means A fixed star [app. because of its twinkling, or shining with intermitted light]. (A.) غَبْغَبٌ: see غَبَبٌ.

A2: Also A place where victims are sacrificed: (O, TA:) or الغَبْغَبُ, (S, O, K, TA,) particularly, (TA,) a small mountain, (S, O, K, TA,) which is the place of sacrifice, (S, O,) in Minè: (S, K:) or the place in which was ElLát, at Et-Táïf: or the place where they used there to sacrifice to El-Lát: or غَبْغَبٌ is an appellation of any place of sacrifice in Minè. (TA.) b2: And الغَبْغَبُ is the name of An idol (صَنَمٌ), (O, K, TA,) which they used to worship in the Time of Ignorance, and upon which (عَلَيْهِ) they used to sacrifice; (O, TA; *) and IDrd says that some called it الغَبْغَبُ [q. v.], with the unpointed ع: (O:) or a stone which was set up before the idol, for, or [dedicated] to, Menáf, opposite the corner of the Black Stone [of the Kaabeh]; and there were two [whereof each was] thus called. (TA.) تَغِبَّةٌ False testimony: (K, TA:) of the measure تَفْعِلَةٌ, [being originally تَغْبِبَةٌ,] from غَبَّبَ الذِّئْبُ فِى الغَنَمِ, or from غَبَّبَ signifying “ it became very corrupt. ” (IAth, TA.) رَجُلٌ مَغِبٌّ [A man having a tertian fever, as is indicated in the TA,] is mentioned on the authority of Az, in the form of an act. part. n. (TA.) A2: And المُغِبُّ means The lion. (O, K.) مِغَبٌّ: see غِبٌّ, last sentence but two.

Q. 1 دَرْهَمَتْ, said of the خُبَازَى [or mallow], (K, TA,) It became round [in its leaves]; (TA;) its leaves became like [the silver coins called]

دَرَاهِم. (K.) Q. 4 اِدْرَهَمَّ, (S, K,) inf. n. اِدْرِهْمَامٌ, (S,) He (a man, TA) became aged: (K, TA:) or he (an old man) tottered (سَقَطَ) by reason of age. (S, TA.) b2: ادرهمّ بَصَرَهُ His sight became dim, or obscure. (K.) دِرْهَمٌ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) of the measure فِعْلَلٌ, (Msb, MF,) of which it has been said that there are only three other instances, but there are many more; (MF;) an arabicized word, (S, Msb,) from the Pers\. طَبَرِيَّةٌ; and when they were coined in the age of El-Islám, they made of the heavy and the light two dirhems, so that ten became equal to seven مثاقيل: A 'Obeyd says that this was done in the time [of the dynasty] of the sons of Umeiyeh: (El-Karkhee, cited in the Mgh:) [see also De Sacy's “ Chrest. Arabe,” sec. ed., vol. ii. p. 110 of the Arabic text, and p. 282 of the transl.; where it is further stated, on the authority of Ibn-Khaldoon, that the دِرْهَم مَغْرِبِىّ was three دوانيق; and the يَمَنِىّ, one دانق; and, as is said in the Msb, that 'Omar adopted the mean between the بغلىّ and the طبرىّ, making the درهم to be six:] the pl. (of درهم, S) is دَرَاهِمُ and (of درهام, S) دَرَاهِيمُ. (S, K.) [The former of these pls. is often used as signifying Money, cash, or coin, in an absolute sense.] The dim. is ↓ دُرَيْهِمٌ and ↓ دُرَيْهِيمٌ: the latter held by Sb to be anomalous; for he says that it is as though it were formed from دِرْهَامٌ, though this was not used by them. (TA.) b2: Hence, as being likened thereto, [i. e., to the coin thus called,] (TA,) دِرْهَمٌ signifies also (assumed tropical:) A حَدِيقَة [app. as meaning a round piece of land surrounded by a fence or the like, or by elevated land; for this is one of the significations of حَدِيقَةٌ]. [It is said that] this is taken from the saying of 'Antarah, [describing shower of copious rain,] فَتَرَكْنَ كُلَّ حَدِيقَةٍ كَالدِّرْهَمِ [So that they left every ridged-round spot of ground like the درهم]. [But accord. to one reading, he said, كُلَّ قَرَارَةٍ; meaning, as is said in the EM, p. 227, “every round hollow; ” and likening such a hollow to the درهم because of its roundness, and the clearness and whiteness of its water.]

جمهر

Q. 1 جَمْهَرَ, (T, A, K,) inf. n. جَمْهَرَةٌ, (A,) He collected together (T, A, K) a thing, (TA,) or earth, or dust, (T, A, TA,) one part upon another. (T, TA.) b2: جمهر القَبْرَ, (S, Msb, K,) inf. n. as above, (S,) He collected the earth, or dust, over the grave, (S, Msb, K,) not plastering it with clay, or mud, (S, K,) nor making it even, or level. (TA.) b3: جمهر المَتَاعَ He took the main part of the household-goods, or commodities: and in like manner the verb is used in relation to plants, or herbage. (Kitáb el- Addád, TA.) b4: جمهر عَلَيْهِ الخَبَرَ, (Ks, S, K,) or لَهُ, (Lth, TA,) or إِلَيْهِ, (Az, TA,) He acquainted him with a part of the news, or story, and concealed what he desired, or meant: (Ks, S, K:) or he acquainted him with a part of the news, or story, incorrectly, or not in the proper manner, and omitted what he desired, or meant: (Lth, TA:) or he acquainted him with a small portion thereof, omitting most of what was necessary for him to know, and relating it in a manner different from the proper way: (Az, TA:) and accord. to the Kitáb el-Addád of Abu-t-Teiyib the Lexicologist, it seems to have a contr. signification; for he says that جَمْهَرْتُ لَكَ الخَبَرَ means, I acquainted thee with the main part of the news, or story. (TA.) Q. 2 تَجَمْهَرَ عَلَيْنَا He held up his head with an assumption of superiority over us; domineered over us; or exalted himself above us. (TA.) جَمْهَرَةٌ [originally inf. n. of جَمْهَرَ]: see the next paragraph.

جُمْهُورٌ (not جَمْهُورٌ, which is a form of the word mentioned by Et-Tilimsánee, MF) A quantity of sand rising above what is around it, (S, Msb, K,) and collected together; (S;) as also ↓ with ة; (L;) so called from its abundance and height: (Msb:) or a large quantity of sand, heaped up, and extensive: (Lth, TA:) and ↓ with ة, sand compacted together, and extending in an oblong form upon the surface of the earth. (TA.) b2: The generality, or main part, of men, or people: (S, A, K:) and the eminent, elevated, or noble, of them: (TA:) and a great number of people: (Msb:) pl. جَمَاهِيرُ; (A, Msb;) which signifies also collective bodies of men. (TA.) You say, هٰذَا قَوْلُ الجُمْهُورِ This is the saying of the generality, or main part. (A.) b3: The generality; the greater, main, or chief, part; the main body, main, gross, mass, or bulk; of anything; (K;) as also ↓ جَمْهَرَةٌ. جُمْهُورِىٌّ An intoxicating beverage: (AO, K:) or [beverage of the kind called] نَبِيذ made of grapes, that is three years old: (K:) or i. q. بُخْتَجٌ; (TA;) which is expressed juice [of grapes] cooked (Mgh voce بختج, and TA) so as to be reduced to one third, (Mgh,) such as is lawful to be drunk: (TA:) or the beverage called بختج to which what has gone from it has been restored, and which is then cooked, and put into vessels, and becomes very potent: (AHn, and Mgh ubi suprà, and TA:) or juice of grapes cooked until half of it is gone and half remains: (KL:) called جمهورىّ because used by most men. (TA.) جُمَاهِرٌ Large, big, bulky, or corpulent. (TA.) مُجَمْهَرَةٌ A she-camel compact in make; (K;) as though she were a جُمْهُور of sand. (TA.)

Q. 1 فَرْتَنَ, (T, K, TA,) inf. n. فَرْتَنَةٌ, (T, TA,) signifies شَقَّقَ كَلَامَهُ وَاهْتَمَشَ فِيهِ [app. meaning He uttered, or endeavoured with repeated efforts to utter, his speech in the best manner, and proceeded slowly therein]: (T, K, * TA:) in the copies of the K, اهتمس, with the unpointed س, is put for اهتمش, which is the right reading. (TA.) b2: and He went along with short steps. (K.) A2: And He (a man) became angry, and in a state of excitement: from what here follows [and therefore, app., post-classical]. (TA.) فُرْتُنَةٌ, with damm, [meaning with two dammehs,] A state of commotion of the sea arising from the violence of the winds: app. post-classical. 1 عَشَّ, (TK,) inf. n. عَشٌّ, (K,) He (a bird) kept to his عُشّ [or nest in a tree]. (K, TK.) 2 عشّش, inf. n. تَعْشِيشٌ, He (a bird) made for himself a nest in a tree; (S, O, K;) as also ↓ اعتشّ, (A, K,) or اعتشّ عُشَّهُ, (O,) inf. n. اِعْتِشَاشٌ. (TA.) b2: It is said in a trad., (A, K,) in the story of Umm-Zara, (O, TA,) لَا تَمْلَأُ بَيْتَنَا تَعْشِيشًا, meaning She will not be unfaithful with respect to our food, or wheat, by hiding somewhat in every corner, (A, O, K,) like birds that make their nests in sundry place, (O,) so that it becomes like the nest of the bird in a tree, (A, O,) or so that it becomes like the place where the birds make their nests in a tree. عُشٌّ The nest of a bird, formed of what it collects together, (S, A, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) of slender pieces of sticks, (S, A, O, K,) &c., (S, O,) or of fragments of sticks, (Mgh, Msb,) in which it lays its eggs, (Mgh,) in a tree, (S, A, Mgh, O, Msb, K,) in the branches thereof; (S, A, O, K;) as also ↓ عَشٌّ: (A, K:) but if in a mountain, (S, O, Msb,) or a building, (Msb,) or a wall or the like, (S, O,) it is called وَكْرٌ, and وَكْنٌ; and if in the ground, أُفْحُوصٌ, (S, O, Msb,) and أُدْحِىٌّ: (S, O:) or the nest of a raven or other bird, upon a tree, when it is dense, or compact, and large: (Lth, T:) pl. عُضٌّ The provender, or fodder, of the people of the cities or towns; such as the dregs of sesamegrain from which the oil has been expressed, and crushed date-stones: (S, O, TA:) or dough with which camels are fed: (AHn, O, K:) and [the trefoil called] قَتّ, (AHn, O, K,) i. e. فِصْفِصَة: (AHn, O:) and barley and wheat, not mixed with any other thing: (AA, O, K:) or date-stones (K, TA) crushed, (TA,) and قَتّ, (K, TA,) with which camels are fed: (TA:) and thick, or course, trees [or shrubs] remaining in the earth: (AA, O, K;) as also ↓ عَضَاضٌ: (AA, O:) or date-stones (K, TA) crushed, (TA,) and dough: (K, TA:) and barley (K, TA) with one of those two things; (TA;) but 'Alee Ibn-Hamzeh disallows its application to date-stones: (IB, TA:) or thick, large firewood, collected: (K, TA:) and dry herbage (K, TA) with which beasts are fed. عِضٌّ [is of the measure فِعْلٌ, in the sense of the measure فَاعِلٌ in some cases, and in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ in other cases; but appears to have only tropical significations]. b2: (tropical:) A lock that will scarcely open; or that is not near to opening; expl. by لَا يَكَادُ يَنْفَتِحُ: (S, A, O, K:) or that will not open. (TA.) b3: (tropical:) One who keeps close to his property: (TA:) a man who improves his means of subsistence and his property, attends closely to it, and manages it well: (L:) or a manager of property: (K:) or عِضُّ مَالٍ signifies one who manages property well: (A:) or who manages property rigorously. (S, O.) b4: (tropical:) Niggardly, tenacious, or avaricious: (K, TA:) for a man's keeping close to his property generally courses him to fall into niggardliness: or such a person is likened to a lock that will not open. (TA.) b5: (tropical:) Evil in disposition; (Lth, O, K, TA;) bad, wicked or malignant. (TA.) b6: (tropical:) A strong man; (IAar, T, A, K;) as also ↓ عَضْعَضٌ. (IAar, T, TA.) It is said in the A that العَضِيضُ and العِضُّ signify الشَّدِيدُ: and in one place in the K, that العَضِيضُ signifies العَضُّ الشَّدِيدُ: and by Sgh, in his two books, [the O and TS,] as on the authority of IAar, that العَضْعَضُ signifies العَضُّ الشَّدِيدُ: but the correct reading is that which is given in the T, with which other lexicons agree. (TA.) b7: (tropical:) Having strength, or power, sufficient for a thing. (K.) You say, هُوَ عِضُّ سَفَرٍ (tropical:) He has strength, or power, sufficient for travel: (S, A, O:) he is rendered experienced, or expert, by travels: of the measure فِعْلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ. (A, TA.) And عِضُّ قِتَالٍ (tropical:) Having strength, or power, sufficient for fight. (TA.) b8: (assumed tropical:) An equal in courage, or generally; or an opponent, or adversary; syn. قِرْنٌ: (O, K:) of another; (TA;) as also ↓ عَضِيضٌ. (TA.) عَاضٌّ A camel that feeds upon the trees called عِضّ. (ISk, S, O.) تَعْضُوضٌ A sort of black dates, (S, O, K,) sweet, (K,) very sweet, the place of origin of which is Hejer: (S, O:) n. un. with ة: (S, O, K:) which latter is said by AHn to be a date of a colour like that of the spleen, large, succulent, melliferous, luscious: and [also a tree producing such dates; for] he mentions his having been told that the تَعْضُوضَة bears, in Hejer, a thousand pounds, of the weight of the pound of El-'Irák. (O.) تَعْضُوضَةٌ, n. un. of تَعْضُوضٌ [q. v.]. b2: See also عَضُوضٌ, third signification.

مَعَضٌّ [lit. A place in which to bite. b2: and hence,] i. q. مُسْتَمْسَكٌ (tropical:) [A place in which, or on which, to lay hold: and a thing on which to lay hold]. (S, A, O, Msb.) So in the saying مَا لَنَا فِى الأَرْضِ مَعَضٌّ (tropical:) [There is not for us, in the earth, any place in which, or on which, to lay hold; meaning, in which to settle]. (A, TA.) And in the saying مَا لَنَا فِى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ مَعَضٌّ (tropical:) [There is not for us, in this affair, anything on which to lay hold]. حَسَسْتُ, aor. ـِ (S, K;) and first Pers\. حَسِسْتُ, [aor. ـَ (Yaakoob, S, K;) inf. n. حِسٌّ (S, K) and حَسٌّ, (K,) or the latter is inf. n. of both verbs, but the former is a simple subst., (TA,) He was, or became, tender, or compassionate, towards him: (S, K:) [lit., he felt for him:] ISd says that, for رَقَقْتُ لَهُ, the explanation of حسستُ له, he found in the book of Kr the verb written with ف and ق; but that the former [?] is the right: (TA:) or he lamented for him; (Aboo-Málik, TA;) as also لَهُ ↓ حَسْحَسَ. (K, * TA.) The Arabs say, إِنَّ العَامِرِىَّ لَيَحِسُّ لِلسَّعْدِىِّ Verily the 'Ámiree is tender, or compassionate, towards the Saadee; because of the relationship that subsists between them. (TA.) (TA.) You say also, تحسّس مِنَ الشَّيْءِ He asked, or inquired, after news, or tidings, of the thing. (S, TA.) And تحسّس فُلَانًا, and مِنْ فُلَانٍ, He inquired, or sought for information, respecting such a one; as also تجسّس: or the former signifies he sought after him for himself; and the latter, “he sought after him for another. ” (TA, art. جس.) The passage in which it occurs in the Kur xii. 87, has been differently interpreted, accord. to the several explanations here given. (TA.) حِسٌّ [accord. to some, a subst. from 1, q. v., in several senses explained above; but accord. to others, an inf. n. As a simple subst., it is often used as syn. with حَاسَّةٌ in the first of the senses assigned to the latter below; i. e., A sense; a faculty of sense; as, for instance, in the K in art. سمع. b2: Hence الحِسُّ المُشْتَرَكُ: see art. شرك].

A2: A sound: (K:) or a low, faint, gentle, or soft, sound; as also ↓ حَسِيسٌ: (S, Mgh, Msb, TA:) [in the present day it often signifies the voice of a man or woman; and particularly when soft:] a plaintive voice or sound, in singing or weeping, and such as that of a lute; syn. رَنَّهٌ: (TA:) or ↓ حَسِيسٌ, [or both,] the sound by which a thing is perceived: (Bd in xxi. 102:) and the former, motion: (K:) and the passing of anything near by one, so that he hears it without seeing it; as also ↓ حَسِيسٌ. (K TA.) It is said in the Kur [xxi. 102], ↓ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا They shall not hear its low sound: (S:) [meaning, that of hellfire:] or the sound by which it shall be perceived: (Bd:) or the motion of its flaming. (TA.) and in a trad., فَسَمِعَ حِسَّ حَيَّةٍ And he heard the motion, and the sound of the passing along, of a serpent. (TA.) And you say, مَا سَمِعَ لَهُ حِسًّا وَلَا جِرْسًا He heard not any motion, nor any sound, of him, or it. (TA.) It may refer to a man and to other things; as, for instance, wind. (TA.) A3: A pain which attacks a woman after childbirth, (S, A, K,) in the womb: (A:) or the pain of childbirth, when the latter is [first] felt: but the former meaning is confirmed by a trad. (TA.) b2: حشسُّ الحُمَّى The commencement of fever, when the latter is [first] felt; (TA;) as also ↓ حِسَاسُهَا: (Lh, TA:) or حِسٌّ signifies a touch, or slight affection, of fever, at its very commencement. حَسَاسٌ, with fet-h, Perception by means of any of the senses; syn. وُجُودٌ. (L, TA.) Hence the proverb, لَا حَسَاسَ مِنِ ابْنَىْ مَوْقِدٍ [There is no perceiving of the two sons of the place of the kindling of fire]: (L, TA:) for they say that two men used to kindle a fire in a road, and, when people passed by them, to entertain them as guests; and a party passing by when they had gone, a man said these words. (L.) And hence the saying, ذَهَبَ فُلَانٌ فَلَا حَسَاسَ بِهِ Such a one has gone, and there is no perceiving him: or there is no perceiving his place. (TA.) حِسَاسُ الحُمَّى: see حِسٌّ.

سَنَةٌ حَسُوسٌ A year of severe sterility and drought; (S, K; *) in which is little good fortune; (TA;) as also ↓ حَاسُوسٌ: (K:) or a year that consumes everything. (TA.) حَسِيسٌ: see حِسٌّ, in four places.

A2: [حَاسَّةٌ also signifies (assumed tropical:) A thing that destroys, consumes, or injures, herbage or the like. Hence,] حَوَاسٌ الأَرْضِ Cold and hail [in one copy of the S heat] and wind and locusts and the beasts [that pasture]: (S, K:) these also being five. (S.) You say, أَصَابَتِ الأَرْضَ حَاسَّةٌ (assumed tropical:) Cold smote the land: (Lh, TA:) the ة is to denote intensiveness. (TA.) (S, TA.) مِحَسَّةٌ (tropical:) A currycomb; syn. فِرْجَونٌ; (S, A, * K;) it is an instrument of iron, having teeth like the مُشْط. 1 جَدَّهُ, aor. ـُ (S, Msb,) inf. n. جَدٌّ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) He cut it, or cut it off. (S, Mgh, Msb, K.) This is the primary signification. (Mgh.) You say of a weaver, جَدَّ ثَوْبًا He cut off a piece of cloth [sufficient for a garment or the like, from the web]. (S, K.) And جَدَّ النَّخْلَ, (S, Mgh, L,) aor, جَدُّ, (S, L,) inf. n. جَدٌّ (S, L, K) and جَدَادٌ (Lh, Mgh, L) and جِدَادٌ; (Lh, L; [in the L, the last two forms are mentioned as inf. ns., and the former of them is mentioned as inf. n. in the Mgh; but in the K, they are only mentioned as syn. with جَدٌّ; and in the S, it seems to be implied that they are simple substs., or quasiinf. ns.;]) i. q. صَرَمَهُ; (Lh, S, Mgh, K; *) [like جَذَّهُ and جَزَّهُ;] i.e., He cut off the fruit of the palm-trees. And جَدَّ جِدُّهُ, [meaning His labour, or exertion, or energy, was, or became, great, or extraordinary: or] meaning اِزْدَادَ جِدُّهُ جِدًّا [his labour, &c., increased in labour, &c.]: or it may mean what was not [his] جِدّ, became جِدّ; wherefore, i. e. because it would be so eventually, it is here so called. (KL.) 3 جادّهُ فِى الأَمْرِ, (S, L, K, *) inf. n. مُجَادَّةٌ, (L,) i. q. حَاقَّهٌ (S, L) or حَاقَقَهُ (K) [He contended with him respecting a thing, each of them asserting his right therein: so accord. to explanations of حاقّهُ in the lexicons: but I think that the meaning intended here is, he acted seriously, or in earnest, with him in the affair; and this is confirmed by its being immediately added in the TA, after حاققه, “and أَجَدَّ ” signifies “ حَقَّقَ, as above mentioned: ” see جَدَّفِى الأَمْرِ expl. by حَقَّقَ as contr. of هَزَلَ]. (TA.) b2: اجدّ فُلَانٌ أَمْرَهُ بِذٰلِكَ Such a one established, or settled, firmly his affair, or case, thereby, or therein: so says As, and he cites the following verse: أَجَدَّ بِهَا أَمْرًا وَأَيْقَنَ أَنَّهُ لَهَا أَوْخْرَي كَالطَّحِينَ تُرَابُهَا [He established, or settled, firmly his case thereby, or therein, and knew certainly that he was for it, (app. meaning a war, or battle, حَرْب, which is fem.,) or for another whereof the dust would be like flour]: Aboo-Nasr says, It has been related to me that he said, اجدَ بها امرًا means اجدّ أَمْرَهُ بِهَا; [and so this phrase is explained in the K;] but the former explanation I heard from himself: (L:) or this phrase means أَجَدَّ أَمْرُهُ بِهَا [so in two copies of the S, app., (assumed tropical:) his affair, or case, became easy, or practicable, thereby, like ground termed جَدَد, which is easy to walk, or travel, upon; see the next sentence]; امر being put in the accus. case as a specificative, like عَيْنًا in the phrase قَرِرْتُ بِهِ عَيْنًا, meaning قَرَّتْ بِهِ عَيْنِى. (S.) A3: اجدّ also signifies It (a road) was, or became, what is termed جَدَد [i. e. hard, or level, &c.]. (S, K.) And اجدّت لَكَ الأَرْضُ The ground hath become to thee free from soft places, and clear to thy view. (TA.) b2: Also He walked along, or traversed, what is termed جَدَد. (K.) جَدٌّ Fortune, or particularly good fortune, syn. حَظٌّ, (S, A, Mgh, L, K,) and بَخْتٌ, (S, A, L, K,) in the world, or in wordly circumstances; (TA;) advance in the world, or in worldly circumstances: (Mgh:) pl. [of mult.] جُدُودٌ (S) and [of pauc.] أَجْدَادٌ and أَجُدٌّ. (TA.) Yousay, فُلَانٌ ذُو جَدٍّ فِى كَذَا Such a one is possessed of good fortune in such a thing. (L.) And it is said in a trad. respecting the day of resurrection, وَإِذَا أَصْحَابُ الجَدِّ مَحْبُوسُونَ And lo, the people who were possessed of good fortune and riches in the world were imprisoned. (L.) and in a prayer, (L,) لَا يَنْفَعُ ذَا الجَدِّ مِنْكَ الجَدُّ The good worldly fortune of him who is possessed of such fortune will not profit him, (Mgh, L,) in the world to come, (L,) in lieu of Thee; (Mgh, L; *) i. e., of obedience to Thee: (Mgh, and Mughnee in art. مِنْ:) or in lieu of the good fortune that cometh from Thee: or, as some say, will not defend him from Thee. (Mughnee ubi suprà. [See also another explanation below.]) Hence, أَجَدَّكَ لَا تَفْعَلْ [or أَجَدِّكَ]; and, accord. to some, وَجَدِّكَ: see جِدٌّ. b2: One's lot in life; and the means of subsistence that one receives from the bounty of God. (L, K.) One says, لِفُلَانٍ فِى

هٰذَا الأَمْرِ جَدٌّ Such a one has in this thing, or state of affairs, means of subsistence. (A'Obeyd, L.) b3: Richness; competence, or sufficiency; or the state of being in no need, or of having no wants, or of having few wants. (S, L, Msb.) لا ينفع ذا الجدّ منك الجدّ, [explained above, is said to mean] Riches, &c., will not profit the possessor thereof with Thee; for nothing will profit him but acting in obedience to Thee: منك here signifies عِنْدَكَ. In the phrase اجدّك لا تَفْعَلُ, AAF says, we may consider لا تفعل as put in the place of a denotative of state; or the phrase may be originally اجدّك أَنْ لَا تَفْعَلَ, ان being suppressed, and its government annulled: [therefore it may be rendered, in the former case, Is it with seriousness on thy part, thou doing such a thing? and in the latter case, Is it with seriousness on thy part that thou will not do such a thing? i. e. dost thou mean seriously that thou will not do it? or in this case, اجدّك may be used as a form of adjuration in one of the senses explained above, and لَا تَفْعَلُ may mean, that thou do not such a thing; or اجدّك may mean وَجَدَّكَ, (explained above, and so in the three exs. below,) and لَا تَفْعَلُ, thou wilt not do it:] and, as AHei says, there is here a nice point, which is this; that the noun [meaning the pronoun] to which جدّ is prefixed should agree in person with the verb which follows it; so that one should say, اجدِّى لَا أُكْرِمُكَ, and اجدّكَ لَا تَفْعَلُ, and اجدّهُ لَا يَزُورُنَا; because جدّ is an inf. n. corroborating the proposition that follows it. (Msb, K.) Hence, جِدًّا [meaning In a great, or an extraordinary, degree; greatly, much, exceedingly, or extraordinarily; very; very greatly, or very much; extremely]; as in the phrase, (Msb,) فُلَانٌ مُحْسِنٌ جِدًّا [Such a one is beneficent in a great, or an extraordinary, degree; very, exceedingly, or extremely, beneficent]: you should not say جَدًّا. (S, Msb. * [In my copy of the Msb, it is محسن جدّا بالفتح: but the context shows that there is an omission here, and that, after جدّا, we should read, as in the S, وَلَا تَقُلْ جَدًّا.]) جِدًّا [in a phrase of this kind] is put in the accus. case as an inf. n. [of which the verb is understood; so that, in the ex. given above, the proper meaning is, يَجِدُّ فِى الإِحْسَانِ جِدًّا striving in beneficence with a great striving]; because it is not from the same root as the preceding word, nor is it identical with it [in meaning]. (L.) You say also, فِى هٰذَا خَطَرٌ جِدَّ عَظِيمٍ, meaning عَظِيمٌ جِدًّا [(assumed tropical:) In this is a very, or an extremely, great danger, or risk]. (S.) And هٰذا العَالِمُ جِدَّ العَالِمِ This is the learned man, the extremely [or the very] learned man. (L.) And هٰذَا عَالِمٌ جِدَّ عَالِمٍ This is a learned man, an extremely [or a very] learned man. (L, * K.) b3: Also (tropical:) Haste. (S, L, K, TA.) So in the phrase فُلَانٌ عَلَى جِدِّ أَمْرٍ (tropical:) Such a one is in haste in an affair. (S, L, TA.) A2: Also Executed seriously, or in earnest, [in which there is no jesting,] and excessive; syn. مُحَقَّقٌ مُبَالَغٌ فِيهِ [meaning مُحَقَّقٌ فِيهِ وَمُبَالَغٌ فِيهِ; (see جَدَّ فِى أَمْرِهِ;) جِدٌّ thus used as an epithet having an intensive signification because it is originally an inf. n., or as some say, a simple subst.]: (L, K:) applied in this sense to a punishment: (L:) and also applied to a pace. جَدَّةٌ: see جَدٌّ, near the end of the paragraph.

جُدَّةٌ The bank, or side, or a river; as also جِدَّةٌ and ↓ جِدٌّ (IAth, L, K) and ↓ جُدٌّ (IAth, Mgh, L) and ↓ جَدٌّ, (Mgh, L, K,) accord. to some, but correctly جُدٌّ; so called because cut off from the river, or because cut by the water, in like manner as it is called سَاحِلٌ because it is abraded by the water: (Mgh:) or the part of a river that is near the land; as also ↓ جِدَّةٌ: (L:) and the shore of the sea: (MF:) accord. to As, جدّة is an arabicized word from the Nabathean كدّ. (L.) b2: The stripe, or streak, that is on the back of the ass, differing from his general colour. (S, A, * K.) And (tropical:) A streak (Fr, S, K, TA) in anything, (TA,) as in a mountain, (Fr, S,) differing in colour from the rest of the mountain, (S,) white and black and red; (Fr, TA;) as also in the sky: (A, TA:) pl. جُدَدٌ, (Fr, S,) occurring in the Kur xxxv. 25; (S;) where some read جُدُدٌ, pl. of ↓ جديدة [app. جَدِيدَةٌ], which is syn. with جُدَّةٌ; and some, جَدَدٌ [q. v.]. (Bd.) b3: A sign, or mark, syn. عَلَامَةٌ, (Th, K,) of, or in, anything. (Th, TA.) b4: A beaten way, marked with lines [cut by the feet of the men and beasts that have travelled along it]: (Az, L:) or a road, or way: pl. جُدَدٌ: (Msb:) and جُدُودٌ, also, [app. another pl. of جُدَّةٌ,] signifies paths, or tracks, forming lines upon the ground. (Az, L.) See also جَادَّةٌ. b5: [Hence, app., but accord. to the S from the same word as signifying “a streak,”] رَكِبَ جُدَّةً مِنَ الأَمْرِ, (S, A, TA,) or جُدَّةَ الأَمْرِ, (K,) (tropical:) He set upon a way, or manner, of performing the affair: (A:) or he formed an opinion respecting the affair, or case. (Zj, S, A, K.) b6: See also جِدَّةٌ.

جِدَّةٌ: see جُدَّةٌ, in two places: b2: and see جَدِيدٌ. b3: Also A rag; or piece torn off from a garment; and so ↓ جُدَّةٌ: thus in the saying, مَا عَلَيْهِ جِدَّةٌ and جُدَّةٌ [There is not upon him a rag]. (K.) b4: A collar upon the neck of a dog: (Th, L, K:) pl. جُدَدٌ [like لُحًى pl. of لِحْيَةٌ, or perhaps a mistake for جِدَدٌ]. (L.) جَدَدٌ Hard ground: (S:) or hard level ground: (Har p. 522:) [see also جَدْجَدٌ:] or rough level ground: (K:) or rough ground: or level ground: (TA:) or a level and spacious tract of land; a tract such as is called صَحْرَآء, and such as is called فَضَآء, containing no soft place in which the feet sink, nor any mountain, nor any [hill such as is called] أَكَمَة; sometimes wide, and sometimes of little width: (ISh:) [and] a conspicuous road: (Bd in xxxv. 25:) pl. أَجْدَادٌ. (ISh.) It is said in a prov., مَنْ سَلَكَ الجَدَدَ أَمِنَ العِثَارَ [He who walks along hard, or hard and level, ground is secure from stumbling]; (S, TA;) meaning, he who pursues the course marked out by common consent is secure from stumbling. (TA.) and مَكَانٌ جَدَدٌ occurs in a trad., meaning Level ground. (TA.) b2: See also جَدِيدٌ. b3: Also Sand that is thin, or fine, (K, TA,) and sloping down. (TA.) b4: And A thing resembling a سِلْعَة [or ganglion] in the neck of a camel. (K.) جَدَادٌ and ↓ جِدَادٌ The cutting off of the fruit of palm-trees. (S, * A, * L, Msb, * K. *) You say, هٰذَا زَمَنُ الجَدَادِ and الجِدَادِ [This is the time, or season, of the cutting off of the fruit of the palmtrees]. (S, A, Msb. *) Some say that جداد signifies particularly [as above,] the cutting off [of the fruit] of palm-trees; and جذاذ, the cutting off of all fruits, in a general sense: others say that they signify the same. (TA.) b2: Also The time, or season, of the cutting off of the fruit of palm-trees. (S, * L.) You say جَدَادٌ and جِدَادٌ, like صَرَامٌ and صِرَامٌ, and قَطَافٌ and قِطَافٌ; (Ks, S;) whence it seems as though the measures فَعَالٌ and فِعَالٌ were uniformly applicable to every noun signifying the time of the action; such nouns being likened to أَوَانٌ and إِوَانٌ. (S.) جِدَادٌ: see جَدَادٌ, and جَادٌّ.

جَدُودٌ, (ISk, S, A, K,) or جَدُودَةٌ, (L,) Having little milk, (ISk, S,) or not from any imperfection; (L;) applied to a ewe, (ISk, S, K,) but not to a she-goat; the epithet مَصُورٌ being used in the latter case: (ISk, S:) or a ewe or she-goat having no milk; as also ↓ جَدَّآءُ: (A:) pl. جَدَائِدُ (S, L) and جِدَادٌ. (L.) b2: Also A fat she-ass: pl. جِدَادٌ. (Az, K.) جَدِيدٌ, of the measure فَعِيلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ, [i. e. ↓ مَجْدُودٌ,] Cut, or cut off. (S, Msb.) A poet says, أَبِى حُبِّى سُلَيْمَى أَنْ يَبِيدَا وَأَمْسَى حَبْلُهَا خَلَقًا جَدِيدَا [My love of Suleymà hath refused to perish; but her cord (i. e. her tie of affection to me) hath become worn out and cut]: (S:) [as جديد signifies “new” more commonly than "cut,"] this verse appears as though it involved a contradiction. (MF.) b2: Applied to a garment, or a piece of cloth [sufficient for a garment or the like], Newly cut off [from the web] by the weaver: (S, K:) and so (without ة, S) applied to a مِلْحَفَة; (S, A;) thus applied to a fem. n. because syn. with ↓ مَجْدُودَةٌ; (S, ISd;) or, accord. to Sb, because by ملحفة in this case is meant إِزَار, and for a like reason in like cases; (Ham p. 555;) but one also says جَدِيدَةٌ; (ISd;) and accord. to some, جديد is of the measure فَعِيلٌ in the sense of the measure فَاعِلٌ, and therefore the ة is regularly affixed to it: (Ham ubi suprà:) the pl. is جُدُدٌ (Mbr, Th, S, A, K) and جُدَدٌ; (Az, A'Obeyd, Mbr;) but the former is the more common. (TA.) b3: and hence, (L,) applied to a garment, (L, TA,) or a thing, (S, Msb,) New; contr. of قَدِيمٌ, (Msb,) or contr. of خَلَقٌ; (S, L;) from جِدَّةٌ as contr. of بِلًى: (K:) pl. [of pauc.] أَجِدَّةٌ and [of mult.] جُدُدٌ and جُدَدٌ. (L.) You say, أَصْبَحَتْ خَلَقُهُمْ جُدُدًا, a phrase mentioned by Lh, meaning خُلْقَانُهُمْ جُدُدًا [i. e. Their old worn-out garments became replaced by new]: or جُدُدًا may be here put for جَدِيدًا. (L.) b4: And hence, (TA,) الجَدِيدَانِ and ↓ الأَجَدَّانِ The night and the day; (S, Msb, K;) because they never become impaired by time. (TA.) Yousay, لَا أَفْعَلُهُ مَا اخْتَلَفَ الجَدِيدَانِ and ↓ الأَجَدَّانِ [I will not do it while the day and the night succeed each other]: (S:) or مَا كَرَّ الجَدِيدَانِ and الأَجَدَّانِ [while the day and the night return time after time: i. e., ever]. (A.) b5: Hence likewise, جَدِيدٌ also signifies A thing of which one has had no knowledge. (L.) b6: And hence, (L,) الجَدِيدُ signifies Death: (K:) or is applied as an epithet to death, in the dial. of Hudheyl. (L.) Accord. to Akh and El-Mugháfis El-Báhilee, جَدِيدُ المَوْتِ means The commencement of death. (L.) A2: Also The face, or surface, of the earth, or ground; [as though it were cut;] (S, K, TA;) and so ↓ جَدَدٌ, and ↓ جِدَّةٌ, and ↓ جَدٌّ, (K,) and ↓ جِدٌّ. (TA.) A3: See also جَدٌّ, in two places.

جُدَادَةٌ What is cut off from the roots, or eradicated, of, or from, palm-trees &c. (Lh, TA.) جَدِيدَةٌ The kind of pad, or stuffed thing, (رِفَادَةٌ,) and the felt, stuck, or attached, beneath the two boards of a horse's saddle: there are two such things, called جَدِيدَتَانِ: (S:) or the جديدتان consist of the felt that is stuck, or attached, in the inner side of a horse's and of a camel's saddle: (L:) but جديدة thus applied is a post-classical word: the [classical] Arabs say جَدْيَةٌ, (S,) or, as in J's own handwriting, جَدِيَّةٌ. (So in the margin of a copy of the S.) A2: See also جُدَّةٌ.

جَدْجَدٌ Hard level ground: (S, K:) [see also جَدَدٌ:] smooth ground: and rough ground: (TA:) a smooth tract such as is called فَيْف. (AA, TA.) جُدْجُدٌ [The cricket;] i. q. صَرَّارُ اللَّيْلِ, (S, M,) a small flying thing, (K,) that leaps, or springs, or bounds, much, (S, M,) and creaks by night, (TA,) and bears a resemblance to the جَرَاد [or locust]: (S, M, K:) and a certain insect like the جُنْدَب, (M, L, K,) except that it is generally blackish, and short, but in some instances inclining to white; also called صَرْصَرٌ: (M, L:) or i. q. صَدًى and جُنْدَبٌ: (El-'Adebbes:) pl. جَدَاجِدُ. (S.) Accord. to IAar, A certain insect that clings to a skin, or hide, and eats it. (TA.) A2: See also جُدٌّ.

جَادٌّ act. part. n. of جَدَّ; (Mgh, L;) Cutting, or cutting off. (Mgh.) A2: أَجَادُّ أَنْتَ أَمْ هَازِلٌ Art thou serious or jesting? (A.) It is said in a trad., لَا يَأْخُذَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ مَتَاعَ أَخِيهِ لَاعِبًا جَادًّا [By no means shall any one of you take the property of his brother in play and in earnest]; by which is meant taking a thing without meaning to steal it, but meaning to vex and anger the owner, so that the taker is in play with respect to theft, but in earnest in annoying. (TA in art. لعب.) b2: فُلَانٌ جَادٌّ Such a one is striving, labouring, or toiling; exerting himself or his power or efforts or endeavours or ability; &c. (TA.) And ↓ فُلَانٌ جَادٌّ مُجِدٌّ, thus with the two similar words together, (As, S, L,) signifies the same [in an intensive degree]. (L, TA.) A3: جَادُّ مِائَةِ وَسْقٍ Land, or palm-trees, of which the produce, cut therefrom, is a hundred camel-loads: جَادٌّ being here used in the sense of ↓ مَجْدُودٌ. (L.) It is said in a trad. of Aboo-Bekr, عِشْرِينَ وَسْقًا ↓ نَهَلَ عَائِشَةَ جِدَادَ, meaning He gave to 'Áïsheh palm-trees of which the quantity of the dates cut therefrom was a hundred camel-loads; but the phrase heard from the Arabs is جَادَّ عِشْرِينَ: the former is like the saying هٰذِهِ الدَّرَاهِمُ ضَرْبُ الأَمِيرِ; and the latter, like عِيشَةٌ رَاضِيَةٌ. (Mgh.) جَادَّةٌ The main part of a road; (S, Mgh, Msb, K;) its middle: (Mgh, Msb, and M voce جَرَجَة:) or its even part: or the beaten track, or part along which one walks, or travels; the conspicuous part thereof: or a main road that comprises other roads, or tracks, and upon which one must pass: (TA:) or a road, or way, absolutely; as also ↓ جُدَّةٌ: (Zj, MF:) or a road leading to water: (AHn, TA:) it is so called because it is marked with tracks, forming lines: (T, TA:) pl. جَوَادٌّ, (S, A, Mgh, Msb, K,) occurring in poetry without teshdeed, but disapproved by As. (L.) فُلَانٌ عَلَى الجَادَّةِ means (assumed tropical:) Such a one is following the right course of action or the like. (Mgh.) You say also, هُوَ عَلَى جَادَّةِ الحَقِّ (assumed tropical:) [He is on the road, or main road, of truth]: not, however, عَلَى جَادَّةِ البَاطِلِ, but على مَزَلَّةِ البَاطِلِ, and مَزْلَقَتِهِ, and مَهْلَكَتِهِ. (MF.) أَجَدُّ [Having some part, or parts, cut, or cut off: fem. جَدَّآءُ]. b2: [Hence,] جَدَّآءُ A ewe, or she-goat, or she-camel, (TA,) having her ear cut off. (K, TA.) b3: A ewe, or she-goat, having her teats cut off; (Sh, TA;) as also ↓ مُجَدَّدَةٌ [q. v.], applied to a she-camel: (As, TA:) or having her udder cut off. (Khálid, TA.) b4: [And hence,] (assumed tropical:) A milch animal (TA [in the S app. restricted to a ewe]) whose milk has passed away, (ISk, S, K,) by reason of some fault, or imperfection: (ISk, S:) see also جَدُودٌ: or a ewe, or she-camel, or she-ass, having little milk; having a dry udder: or having dry teats, being hurt by the صِرَار [q. v.]: (L:) and أَجَدُّ (assumed tropical:) a breast that has become dry. (AHeyth.) b5: (assumed tropical:) A woman small in the breast: (S, K:) or having short breasts. (TA from a trad.) b6: (assumed tropical:) A desert, (فَلَاة, S, K,) or land, (أَرْض, A,) in which is no water: (S, A, K:) a desert (مَفَازَة) that is dry. (TA.) b7: عَامٌ أَجَدُّ and سَنَةٌ جَدَّآءُ (assumed tropical:) A year of drought, and of dryness o the earth. (TA.) A2: الأَجَدَّانِ: see جَدِيدٌ, in two places.

A3: أَجَدُّ also signifies More [and most] easy to walk or ride upon, and more [and most] plain or level; applied to a road. (TA.) A4: and More [and most] fortunate; applied to a man. (ISd, A, L.) مُجَدَّدَةٌ الأَخْلَافِ A she-camel having her teats cut off in consequence of injury occasioned to her by the صِرَار [q. v.]. (S.) See also أَجَدُّ.

(S.) مُجِدٌّ: see جَادٌّ. b2: إِنَّهَا لمجدّة بِالرَّجُلِ, a phrase mentioned by As, said of a she-camel, meaning, Verily she is quick in her pace with the man: but Az says, I know not whether he said ↓ مِجَدَّةٌ or مُجِدَّةٌ: the former would be from جَدَّ; and the latter, from أَجَدَّ.
