خرف

1 خَرَفَ, (S, Msb, K,) aor. ـُ (S, Msb,) inf. n. خَرْفٌ (Msb, K) and مَخْرَفٌ and خَرَافٌ and خِرَافٌ; (K;) and ↓ اخترف; (S Msb, K;) He gathered, or plucked, fruit: (S K:) or cut it off. (Msb.) Accord. to the M, خَرَفَ النَّخْلَ signifies He cut off the fruit of the palm-trees: and accord. to AHn, ↓ اِخْتِرَافٌ signifies the picking up the fruit of the palm-trees, whether unripe or ripe. (TA.) b2: خَرَفَ فُلَانًا, (K,) aor. ـُ inf. n. خَرْفٌ, (TA,) He picked up, for such a one, dates (تَمْرًا), or fruit (ثَمْرًا), accord. to different copies of the K: from Sh. (TA.) b3: يَخْرُفُ مِنْ هَاهُنَا وَمِنْ هَاهُنَا, said of a lamb, means He depastures, and eats, from this place and from this. (Msb, TA. *) b4: And خَرَفَ, said of a man, (JK, TA,) aor. ـِ (JK,) or ـُ (TA,) He took of the طَرَف [app. meaning the choice part] of the fruits. (JK, TA.) A2: خَرَفَ also signifies He remained, stayed, or abode, in the [season called] خَرِيف: (Ham p. 676:) and in like manner, ↓ اخرفوا they remained, stayed, or abode, in a place during their خَرِيف. (TA.) You say, خَرَفُوا فِى حَائِطِهِمْ They remained, stayed, or abode, in their حائط [or garden, or walled garden of palm-trees,] in the time of the gathering of the fruits. (TA, from a trad. of 'Omar.) A3: خُرِفْنَا We were rained upon by the rain called الخَرِيف. (S, K.) And خُرِفَتِ الأَرْضُ, (S,) inf. n. خَرْفٌ, (TA,) The land was rained upon by the rain so called. (S, TA) and خُرِفَتِ البَهَائِمُ The beasts were rained upon by the rain so called: or had that upon which they might pasture produced for them by that rain. (TA.) A4: خَرِفَ, aor. ـَ He (a man, TA) was, or became, fond of, or addicted to, the eating of خُرْفَة, (K,) i. e. gathered, or plucked, fruit (S, K, TA) of the palm-tree. (TA.) A5: خَرِفَ, (S, L, Msb, K,) aor. ـَ (Msb, K,) inf. n. خَرَفٌ; (S, * Msb;) and خَرَفَ, aor. ـُ and خَرُفَ, aor. ـُ (K;) He (a man, S, Msb) doted; or was, or became, corrupted, rendered unsound, or disordered, in his intellect; (S, Msb, K;) in consequence of old age. (S, Msb.) [The first of these three verbs, in the present day, is used as meaning He doted; told stories such as are termed خُرَافَات, i. e. fictions, &c.; and talked nonsense: as also ↓ خرّف.]

A6: خَرَفَتْهُ أَخَارِيفُ [app. Stories such as are termed اخاريف, i. e. ↓ خُرَافَات, or fictions, &c., caused him to dote, or talk nonsense]. (JK, TA. * [Mentioned in the former immediately after خُرَافَةٌ explained as meaning “ a fiction that is deemed pretty. ” See also 4.]) 2 خرّفهُ, inf. n. تَخْرِيفٌ, He attributed to him خَرَف, (K, TA,) i. e. [dotage; or] a corrupt, an unsound, or a disordered, state of intellect. (TA.) A2: See also 1, near the end of the paragraph.3 خارفهُ, (K,) inf. n. مُخَارَفَةٌ and خِرَافٌ, (TA,) He bargained, or made an engagement, with him, for work, for the خَرِيف [or autumn]; (K;) from الخَرِيفُ, like المُشَاهَرَةُ from الشَّهْرُ; (O, TA;) as also عَامَلَهُ مُخَارَفَةً (S, TA) and خِرَافًا: and so اِسْتَأْجَرَهُ مُخَارَفَةً and خِرَافًا [He hired him, or took him as a hired man or a hireling, for the autumn]. (S, K.) b4: Said of a she-camel, She brought forth in the like of the time [of the year] in which she became pregnant (S, K) in the preceding year: so says El-Umawee: (S:) [or, so applied, it means the same as when said of a ewe or she-goat; for] the epithet applied to her in this case is ↓ مُخْرِفٌ; (S, K;) but this is more correctly explained as signifying, applied to a she-camel and to a ewe or she-goat, that brings forth in the خريف. (TA.) b5: Also, said of ذُرَة [or millet], It became very tall. (JK, Ibn-'Abbád, K.) A2: اخرفهُ نَخْلَةً He assigned to him a palm-tree of which he should cut, or gather, the fruit. (Lth, K.) A3: Also, (said of anxiety, JK, or of time, or fortune, TA,) It corrupted him, or disordered him; (K, TA;) [app., in his intellect; or caused him to dote; as is indicated in the JK;] namely, an old man. (JK.) 8 إِخْتَرَفَ see 1, first and second sentences.

خَرَفٌ A corrupt, an unsound, or a disordered, state of the intellect; dotage. (S. [See خَرِفَ, of which it is the inf. n.]) A2: The [bad sort of] dates called شِيص. (K, * TA.) خرِفٌ Corrupted, unsound, or disordered, in his intellect, (S, Msb, K,) in consequence of old age; doting: (S, Msb:) fem. with ة. (TA.) خُرُفٌ A time of going forth of camels, (Nh,) or of men, (O, K,) to the [herbage of the season called] خَرِيف: so in the saying of El-Járood, يَا رَسُولَ اللّٰهِ قَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا يَكْفِينَا مِنَ الظَّهْرِ ذَوْدٌ نَأْتِى

عَلَيْهِنَّ فِى خُرُفٍ [O Apostle of God, verily thou knowest that a number such as is termed ذود, of camels for riding or carriage, whereon we come in a time of going forth &c., is not sufficient for us]. (Nh, O, K.) خُرْفَةٌ Gathered, or plucked, fruits; (S, Mgh, K;) and particularly of the palm-tree: (TA:) and ↓ خُرَافَةٌ signifies the same. (Mgh, K, TA. [See also خَرِيفٌ.]) It is said in a trad., التَّمْرُ خُرْفَةُ الصَّائِمِ [Dates are the gathered fruit of the faster]; (S, TA;) because breaking the fast upon them is approved: and in another, النَّخْلَةُ خُرْفَةُ الصَّائِمِ, meaning The palm-tree is that of which the fruit is eaten by the faster. خَرْفَى The جلبان, (i. e. جُلُبَّان, or جُلْبَان, &c., accord. to different copies of the K, [see art. جلب,]) a well-known grain or seed, (AHn, K,) of the kind called قَطَانِىّ [i. e. pulse]: (AHn:) an arabicized word, from خَرْبَى, (AHn, K,) which is Persian; also called خُلَّرٌ. (AHn.) خَرْفِىٌّ and خِرْفِىٌّ: see what next follows.

خَرَفَىٌّ and ↓ خَرْفِىٌّ, (S, Msb, K,) the latter a contraction of the former, (Msb,) and ↓ خِرْفِىٌّ, (K,) Of, or relating to, the season called خَرِيف; (S, Msb, K;) and applied to the rain of that season; (JK;) rel. ns. from الخَرِيفُ; (S, Msb, K;) irregularly formed. (S, Msb.) b2: The first also signifies The increase (نِتَاج) [of sheep and goats] in the end of the [season called] قَيْظ. (Aboo-Nasr, TA voce صَفَرِىٌّ, q. v.) خَرَافٌ and ↓ خِرَافٌ The time of the gathering, or plucking, of fruits: (Ks, K:) like حَصَادٌ and حِصَادٌ [&c.]. (TA.) b2: Also inf. ns. of خَرَفَ in the first of the senses explained above. (K.) خِرَافٌ: see the next preceding paragraph: and see مَخْرَفٌ, last sentence.

خَرُوفٌ A lamb; syn. حَمَلٌ [q. v.]: (S, Msb:) or the male young one of the sheep-kind: or such as has pastured, and become strong: (Lth, K:) younger than the جَذَع: (Lth, TA:) so called because it depastures from this place and this: (Msb, TA: [see 1:]) fem. with ة: (K:) pl. (of pauc., TA) أَخْرِفَةٌ and (of mult., TA) خِرْفَانٌ. (Msb, K, TA.) The latter pl. is sometimes used as meaning (assumed tropical:) Young and ignorant persons; like as كِبَاشٌ is used as meaning aged and learned persons. (TA.) And hence the prov., كَالْخَرُوفِ

أَيْنَمَا اتَّكَأَ عَلَى صُوفٍ [Like the lamb: wherever he reclines, he reclines upon wool]: (JK, TA: but in the latter, اتّكى:) applied to him who leads a soft and delicate life. (TA.) b2: Also, (sometimes, S,) A colt; the male offspring of a mare; when he has attained the age of six months, or seven months; (S, K;) a meaning assigned to it by As, in the “ Book of the Horse; ” but unknown to Abu-l-Ghowth: (S:) or, until a year old: (ISk, K:) it is said by some to be applied to a horse: in the L it is said that the خروف of horses is such as is brought forth in the [season called] خَرِيف: but Khálid Ibn-Jebeleh says that it means such as pastures upon the [herbage of the season called] خَرِيف: and Suh thinks that it is an epithet applied to a horse, and any beast, as meaning that depastures the trees and herbage. (TA.) خَرِيفٌ Fresh ripe dates, (K, TA,) or fruits [in general], (S, TA,) gathered, or plucked; (S, K, TA;) as also ↓ مَخْرُوفٌ. (S, TA. See also مَخْرَفٌ, last sentence. [And see خُرْفَةٌ.]) b2: And hence, (tropical:) Fresh milk; milk recently drawn from the udder. (Hr, TA.) b3: Palm-trees (نَخْلٌ) whereof the quantity of the fruit that is upon them is computed by conjecture. (K. [See also خَرَائِفُ, voce خَرِيفَةٌ.]) b4: [The autumn;] one of the divisions of the year, (S, Mgh,) the division (Msb) [consisting of] three months between the end of the قَيْظ [or summer] and the beginning of the شِتَآء

[or winter], (Lth, K, *) in which the fruits are gathered. (Lth, S, Mgh, Msb, K.) b5: And hence, (Mgh, TA,) (assumed tropical:) A year: (Mgh, K, TA:) so in the saying, مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا فِى سَبِيلِ اللّٰهِ بَاعَدَهُ اللّٰهُ مِنَ النَّارِ أَرْبَعِينَ خَرِيفًا أَوْ سَبْعِينَ, i. e. [Whoso fasteth a day in the way of God, God will remove him from the fire of Hell] to the distance of a journey of forty years, or seventy. (Mgh: and similar exs. are given in the TA, from three trads.: see also an ex. voce إِنَّ.) b6: Also The rain of the season so called: (S, K:) or the rain, (JK,) or the first of the rain, (K,) in the beginning of the شِتَآء [or winter], (JK, K,) which comes at the time of the cutting off of the fruit of the palmtrees: then follows the وَسْمِىّ, at the coming in of the winter; then, the رَبِيع; then, the صَيْف; and then, the حَمِيم: so says As: El-Ghanawee says that the خريف is between the [auroral] rising of الشِّعْرَى [or Sirius, which commenced, in central Arabia, about the epoch of the Flight, on the 13th of July, O. S.,] and the [auroral] setting of العَرْقُوَتَانِ [or الفَرْغَانِ, the 26th and 27th of the Mansions of the Moon, commencing, in the same region and period, on the 8th and 21st of Sept., O. S., and continuing thirteen days]: El-Ghowr and Rekeeyeh [? (imperfectly written)] and El-Hijáz are all rained upon by the خريف; but Nejd is not: Az says, the first rain is the وَسْمِىّ; the follows the شَتَوِىّ; then, the دَفَئِىّ; then, the صَيْف; then, the حَمِيم; then, the خَرِيف: and therefore the year is made to consist of six seasons: accord. to AHn, [who seems in this matter to differ from most others,] الخريف is not originally the name of the division of the year; but the name of the rain of the قَيْظ [or summer]; and then the season was named thereby. (TA.) [See also نَوْءٌ.] b7: [Also The herbage of the season so called, or of the rain so called; like as رَبِيعٌ signifies the “ herbage of the season, or of the rain, so called. ” So in the phrase used by Khálid Ibn-Jebeleh (in explaining the word خَرُوف), مَا رَعَى الخَرِيفَ Such as pastures upon the خريف.] b8: Also, accord. to AA, (TA,) A rivulet, streamlet, or small channel for irrigation. (JK, K, TA.) خُرَافَةٌ i. q. خُرْفَةٌ, q. v. (Mgh, K.) b2: Hence خُرَافَاتٌ meaning Stories that are deemed pretty: similar to فُكَاهَةٌ from فَاكِهَةٌ: (Mgh:) [or] خُرَافَةُ was the name of a man, (S, Mgh, K,) of [the tribe of] 'Odhrah, (S, K,) whom the Jinn (or Genii) fascinated, (S, Mgh, K,) as the Arabs assert, (Mgh,) and carried off, (TA,) and who related what he had seen, (S, Mgh, K,) of them, when he returned, (Mgh,) and they pronounced him a liar, and said, (S, Mgh, K,) of a thing that was impossible, (Mgh,) حَدِيثُ خُرَافَةَ [a story of Khuráfeh]: (S, Mgh, K:) but it is related of the Prophet, that he said, خُرَافَةُ حَقٌّ, (S, Mgh,) meaning What Khuráfeh relates [as heard] from the Jinn [is true]: (Mgh:) the ر is without teshdeed; and the article ال is not prefixed, because the word is determinate [by itself], unless one mean thereby خُرَافَاتٌ as signifying fictictious night-stories: (S:) or خُرَافَةٌ signifies a fictitious story that is deemed pretty: (Lth, K:) [and ↓ أَخَارِيفُ app. signifies the same as خُرَافَاتٌ, as though its sing. were أُخْرُوفَةٌ, like as أَسَاطِيرُ and أَحَادِيثُ, which have similar meanings, are pls. of which the sings. are said to be أَسْطُورَةٌ and أُحْدُوثَةٌ:] see 1, last signification.

خَرُوفَةٌ: see what next follows.

خَرِيفَةٌ and ↓ خَرُوفَةٌ A palm-tree (نَخْلَةٌ) of which a man gathers, or plucks, the fruit for himself and his household; as also ↓ مَخْرَفٌ: (AHn:) or a palm-tree which one takes for the picking up of its fresh ripe dates: (Sh, O, K:) or the latter signifies a palm-tree of which the fruit is cut off; being of the measure فَعُولَةٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولَةٌ: and the former is said to signify one that is set apart for its fruit that is [to be] gathered, or plucked: (TA:) or a selected palm-tree: (JK:) and its pl. is خَرَائِفُ: (JK, TA:) or خَرَائِفُ signifies palmtrees whereof the quantity of the fruit that is upon them is computed by conjecture. (Az, S, K. [See also خَرِيفٌ.]) Also, the former, [A palm-tree set in the manner described in the following explanation:] one's digging, for a palm-tree, in a water-course, or channel of a torrent, in which are pebbles, until reaching hard ground, and then filling up the hollow with sand, and setting the palm-tree therein. (O, K.) خَارِفٌ A keeper, or watcher, of palm-tree: (K:) pl. خُرَّافٌ. (TA.) أَخَارِيفُ: see خُرَافَةٌ; and see 1, last signification.

مَخْرَفٌ The place of the gathering, or plucking, or cutting off, of fruit. (Msb.) A place of abode of a people, or party, during their خَرِيف. (TA. [It is there added, “as though formed from أَخْرَفُوا, by the rejection of the augmentative letter: ” but it is rather to be regarded as regularly formed, from خَرَفُوا: see 1.]) b2: Also A garden; (Mgh, TA;) and so ↓ مَخْرَفَةٌ: (S, K:) or a garden of palm-trees; as also ↓ مَخْرِفٌ and ↓ مَخْرَفَةٌ: (TA:) a single palm-tree: or a few palm-trees, up to ten; more than these being termed a بُسْتَان or a حَدِيقَة: (El-Harbee, TA:) see also خَرِيفَةٌ: or a small collection of palmtrees, six or seven, which a man purchases for the fruit that is [to be] gathered, or plucked: or any collection of palm-trees: (L, TA:) or a walled garden of palm-trees: (IAth, TA:) or palm-trees [absolutely]: (Mgh:) and an avenue between two rows of palm-trees, such that one may gather, or pluck, the fruit from whichever of them he will; (K;) as also ↓ مَخْرَفَةٌ: (Sh, K:) and, (S, Mgh, K,) as also ↓ مَخْرَفَةٌ, (S, K,) a road, (S, Mgh, K,) such as is conspicuous, clear, or open: (K:) pl. مَخَارِفُ. (Mgh, TA.) It is said in a trad., عَائِدُ المَرِيضِ عَلَى مَخَارِفِ الجَنَّةِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ, i. e. The visitor of the sick is as though he were in the gardens of Paradise until he returns: or upon the palm-trees of Paradise; gathering, or plucking, their fruits: or upon the roads of Paradise: (Mgh, * TA:) or, as some relate it, الجنّةِ ↓ على مَخْرَفَةِ. (TA. [See also another explanation, and other readings in what follows.]) And it is said in a trad. of 'Omar, النَّعَمِ ↓ تَرَكْتُكُمْ عَلَى مَخْرَفَةِ, (S,) or تُرِكْتُمْ, (TA,) i. e. [I have left you, or ye have been left,] upon a conspicuous road, like the road of the camels, (As, S, * TA,) which they have trodden with their feet so that it has become plainly apparent. (As, TA.) b3: Also Gathered, or plucked, fruit of palm-trees: (As, A 'Obeyd, IAmb, K:) a correct meaning, though IKt says that the proper word in this sense is only مَخْرُوفٌ: it is like مَشْرَبٌ and مَطْعَمٌ and مَرْكَبٌ as meaning مَشْرُوبٌ and طَعَامٌ مَأْكُولٌ and مَرْكُوبٌ; and may signify fresh ripe dates gathered or plucked: (IAmb, TA:) pl. as above. (As, &c.) So in the former of the two trads. mentioned above accord. to As and A 'Obeyd: (TA:) and this interpretation is corroborated by another reading, i. e., على الجنّةِ ↓ خُرْفَةِ: (Mgh:) another reading is, فِى

الجنّةِ ↓ خِرَافِ: [see خَرَافٌ:] and another, لَهُ فِى الجَنَّةِ ↓ خَرِيفٌ, i. e. [The visitor of the sick shall have] gathered fruits in Paradise. (TA.) مَخْرِفٌ: see the next preceding paragraph.

مِخْرَفٌ The thing in which fruits are gathered; (S, Har p. 374;) called by the Arabs خَافَةٌ: (Har ib.:) a [basket of the kind called] مِكْتَل, (Msb,) or زِنْبِيل, of small size, in which the best fresh ripe dates are gathered: (O, K:) pl. مَخَارِفُ. (A, TA.) One says, خَرَجُوا إِلَى المَخَارِفِ بالمَخَارِفِ, i. e. They went forth to the gardens with the baskets (زُبُل) [for gathering fruit]. (A, TA.) b2: And hence, (assumed tropical:) The basket (زنبيل) in which the importunate beggar puts his food. (Har ubi suprà.) مَخْرَفَةٌ: see مَخْرَفٌ, in six places.

1 خَافَ, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) originally خَوِفَ, (Lth, L, &c.,) first Pers\. خِفْتُ, (TA,) aor. ـَ (S, K, &c.,) originally يَخْوَفُ, (L,) imperative خَفْ, (S,) inf. n. خَوْفٌ (S, Msb, K, &c.) and ↓ خِيفٌ, [originally خِوْفٌ,] (Lh, TA,) erroneously written in the K with fet-h [to the خ], but some say that this is a simple subst., not an inf. n., (TA,) and ↓ خِيفَةٌ, (Lh, S, Msb, K, &c.,) originally خِوْفَةٌ, (K,) but some say that this also is a simple subst., not an inf. n., (TA,) and [therefore] its pl. is خِيفٌ, (Lh, JK, S, and so in the CK,) in [some of] the copies of the K erroneously written خِيَفٌ, (TA,) or this [as well as the next preceding] may be an inf. n., for some few inf. ns. have pls., (ISd, TA,) and مَخَافَةٌ, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) originally مَخْوَفَةٌ, for which last, the first of these inf. ns. is used by a poet, and therefore made fem., (TA,) He feared; he was afraid or frightened or terrified; syn. فَزِعَ. (JK, TA.) خَوِّفْنَا [app. addressed to God] is mentioned by Lh as meaning Render the Kur-án and the Traditions beautiful to us in order that we may [give heed thereto and] fear. (TA.) b2: He made him to be in such a state, or condition, that men feared him; (JK, K;) he made him to be feared by men. (M.) Hence, in the Kur [iii. 169], إِنَّمَا ذٰلِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ يُخَوِّفُ أَوْلِيَآءَهُ, i. e. [Verily that is the devil:] he causeth his friends to be feared by you: [or that devil causeth &c.:] or, as Th says, causeth you to fear by his friends. (TA.) A2: He diminished it, lessened it, or took from it; and so خوّف مِنْهُ. (TA.) [See also 5.] b2: خوّف غَنَبَهُ He sent away his sheep, or goats, flock by flock. (TA.) 3 خَاْوَفَ see 1, last sentence.4 اخافهُ, (Msb, K,) inf. n. إِخَافَةٌ (S) and إِخَافٌ, like كِتَابٌ, (Lh, TA,) [but the latter is irreg. and rare,] He, or it, (an affair, a case, or an event, Msb,) caused him, or made him, to fear, or be afraid; put him in fear; frightened, or terrified, him; (TA;) and ↓ خوّفهُ, (Msb, K,) inf. n. تَخْوِيفٌ, (S, TA,) signifies the same. (S, Msb, K.) So in the phrase اخاف الثَّغْرُ [The enemies' frontier caused to fear, &c.; was insecure:] or fear entered from it. (TA.) You say also, مَالَ الحَائِطُ فَأَخَافَ النَّاسَ [The wall leaned, and caused the people to fear]. (Msb.) And أَخَافَ اللُّصُوصُ الطَّرِيقَ [for أَخَافَ اللُّصُوصُ أَهْلَ الطَّرِيقِ The robbers caused the people of the road, or the passengers thereof, to fear, &c.; or it may be rendered the robbers caused the road to be insecure]. (Msb.) And أَخَفْتُهُ الأَمْرَ فَخَافَهُ [I caused him to fear the thing, or affair, &c., and he feared it; making the verb doubly trans.]; as also إِيَّاهُ فَتَخَوَّفَهُ ↓ خَوَّفْتُهُ. (Msb.) It is said in a trad., أَخِيفُوا الهَوَامَّ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُخِيفَكُمْ Make ye the venomous reptiles and the like to fear before they make you to fear; (TA;) i. e. kill ye them before they kill you. (JM, TA.) b2: مَا أَخْوَفَنِى

عَلَيْكَ [How greatly do I fear for thee!]. (TA.) 5 تخوّفهُ: see 1, in three places.

A2: Also He took by little and little (S, L, K) from it, (S, K,) or from its sides; (L;) as also تحوّفهُ: (S and K * in arts. حوف and حيف:) or he took from its extremities; so in the A; in which it is said to be tropical: accord. to IF, it is originally [تخوّن,] with ن [in the place of the ف]. (TA.) Dhu-rRummeh says, (S,) or not he, but some other poet, for it is ascribed to several different authors, (L,) تَخَوَّفَ الرَّحْلُ مِنْهَا تَامِكًا قَرِدًا كَمَا تَخَوَّفَ ظَهْرَ النَّبْعَةِ السَّفَنُ

[Her saddle abraded from a long and high, compact hump, like as when the piece of skin used for smoothing arrows has abraded from the back of a rod of the tree called نبعة]. (S. [See also 5 in art. حوف, where another reading of this verse is given. In the TA, in the present art., in the places of الرحل and ظهر, I find السَّيْرُ and عُود.]) Hence, (S, K,) accord. to Fr, (TA,) أَوْيَأَخَذِهِمْ عَلَى تَخَوُّفٍ, (S, K,) in the Kur [xvi. 49], (S,) which Az explains as meaning [Or are they secure from his destroying them] by causing them to suffer loss [by little and little] in their bodies and their possessions, or cattle, and their fruits: or, accord. to Zj, it may mean, after causing them to fear, by destroying a town, so that the one next to it shall fear. (TA.) You say also, تخوّف مِنْ مَالِى He took by little and little from my property. (JK.) And تَخَوَّفَنَا السَّنَةُ [The year of drought, or sterility, took from us by little and little]. (JK.) And تَخَوّفَنِى حَقِّى

[He diminished to me by little and little my right, or due]. (JK.) And تَخَوَّفَهُ حمْقُهُ (tropical:) i. q. اهْضَمَهُ [an evident mistranscription for اِهْتَضَمَهُ or هَضَمَهُ, meaning His stupidity deprived him of his right, or due]. (TA.) خَافٌ A man very fearful or timorous; (S, K;) [and so, in the present day, ↓ خَوَّافٌ; the former originally] of the measure فَعِلٌ, like فَرِقٌ and فَزِعٌ; and similar to صَاتٌ, meaning a man “ having a strong, or loud, voice: ” (S:) or i. q. ↓ خَائِفٌ: (TA:) accord. to Kh, it may be [originally خَاوِفٌ,] of the measure فَاعِلٌ, having the medial radical rejected; or [خَوْفٌ,] of the measure فَعْلٌ; and in either case, the dim. is [↓ خُوَيْفٌ,] with و: so says Sb. (TA.) خَوْفٌ inf. n. of 1. (S, Msb, K, &c.) b2: Also Slaughter: whence, وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَىْءٍ مِنَ الْخَوْفِ [And we will assuredly try you with somewhat of slaughter]; (Lh, K;) in the Kur [ii. 150]. (TA.) [See also 4.] b3: And Fighting: whence, فَإِذَا جَآءَ الخَوْفُ [But when fighting cometh; in the Kur xxxiii. 19]. (K.) A2: See also خَائِفٌ.

A3: Also A red hide from which are cut strips like thongs, (Kr, K, TA,) and then upon these are put [ornaments of the kind termed] شَذْر; worn by a girl: (TA:) a dial. var. of حَوْفٌ [q. v.]: (K:) but this latter is preferable. (L, TA.) خِيفٌ: see 1, first sentence.

خَافَةٌ A [coat of the kind called] جُبَّة, of hide, or leather, which the collector of honey wears; (Akh, JK, K;) and also worn by the water-carrier: (JK:) or a fur-garment, or hide with the fur or wool on it, worn by him who enters into the places occupied by bees, in order that they may not sting him: (TA:) or a [pouch of the kind termed] خَرِيطَة, (S, K,) of hide, or leather, (S,) narrow in the upper part and wide in the lower part, (TA,) in which honey is collected: (S, K:) or a [round piece of leather with a running string by means of which it may be converted into a bag, such as is termed] سُفْرَة, like the خَرِيطَة, made, or sewed, small, [for مُصْعَدَةٌ or مُصَعَّدَةٌ, which I find in different copies of the K, and to which no appropriate meaning is assignable, I read مُصْغَرَةٌ or مُصَغَّرَةٌ, (see 2 in art. صغر, and particularly أَصْغَرَ القِرْبَةَ,)] having its head [or border] raised, for honey; (K;) so says Skr, in explaining the following verse: or, as IB says, accord. to Aboo-'Alee, it is from the phrase النَّاسُ أَخْيَافٌ, meaning “ men,” or “ the people,”

“ are different, one from another; ” for it is a خَرِيطَة of hide, or leather, embellished with different kinds of embellishment; and if so it should be mentioned in art. خيف: (TA:) [but] the dim. is ↓ خُوَيْفَةٌ. (JK.) Aboo-Dhu-eyb says, [describing a collector of wild honey,] تَأَبَّطَ خَافَةً فِيهَا مِسَابٌ فَأَصْبَحَ يَقْتَرِى مَشَدًا بِشِيقِ (S,) [He put beneath his armpit a خافة in which was a receptacle for honey, and betook himself to making successive endeavours to reach the most difficult part of a mountain by means of a rope, or rope of palm-fibres; for] he means شِيقًا بِمَسَدٍ; the phrase being inverted: (S and TA in art. شيق:) or he means, [betook himself to] taking successive holds of a rope (يَتَتَبَّعُ حَبْلًا) tied to a شيق [here best rendered mountain-top] in his descent to the place of the honey; so that there is no inversion. (TA in that art.) b2: Also i. q. عَيْبَةٌ [A kind of basket, or receptacle, of hide, or leather]; (TA;) the thing in which fruits are gathered; also called مِخْرَفٌ. (Har p. 374.) b3: And خَافَةُ الزَّرْعِ is said to mean The envelope of the grain of seed-produce; so called because it protects it: to this the believer is likened in a trad. [as some relate it]; but the reading [commonly known] is [خَامَة,] with م. (TA.) [See خامة, in art. خيم.]

خَوَافٌ Vociferation, clamour, or a confused noise, of a company of men. (JK, Sgh, K.) خُوَيْفٌ: see خَافٌ.

(TA.) خَائِفٌ Fearing; being afraid or frightened or terrified: (S, * TA:) pl. خُوَّفٌ (S, K) and خُيَّفٌ, (S,) or خِيَّفٌ, (K,) or, accord. to Ks, خُيَّفٌ and خِيفٌ and خُوفٌ, (L,) [but the second and third of these three should be خِيَّفٌ and خُوَّفٌ, for all are said to be of the measure فُعَّلٌ,] and ↓ خَوْفٌ; or this last is a quasi-pl. n.; (K;) whence, in the Kur [vii. 54], خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا, meaning Worship ye Him fearing his punishment and eagerly desiring his recompense. طَرِيقٌ مُخَافٌ [for مُخَافٌ أَهْلُهُ, A road of which the people, or passengers, are caused to fear, by robbers]. (Msb.) [See also what next follows.]) طَرِيقُ مَخُوفٌ A road in which people fear: (S, * Msb, K:) or a road that is feared; (JK, TA;) as also ↓ مَخِيفٌ, and ↓ خَائِفٌ; which last is tropical, of the measure فَاعِلٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ; (TA;) or, thus applied, this last [is a possessive epithet, and thus] meanshaving fear: (JK: [see also مُخَافٌ:]) you should not say ↓ طَرِيقٌ مُخِيفٌ, because the road does not cause fear, but only he who robs and slays therein. (S, * K, * TA.) One says also ثَغْرٌ

↓ مَخِيفٌ and ↓ مُتَخَوَّفٌ An enemies' frontier [that is feared, or] from which one fears, or from the direction of which fear comes. (TA.) مَخُوفٌ signifies A thing [of any kind] that is feared; as a lion, and a serpent, and fire, and the like. (Har p. 369.) [Hence,] حَائِطٌ مَخُوفٌ A wall of which the falling is feared. (Lh, Msb, TA. [See also مُخِيفٌ.]) And وَجَعٌ مَخُوفٌ [A pain that is feared]. (TA. [See, again, مُخِيفٌ.]) and أَمْرٌ مَخُوفٌ [An affair, or event, that is feared]. (Mgh, Msb. [See, again, مُخِيفٌ.]) And فَاسِقٌ مَخُوفٌ عَلَى مَالِهِ A transgressor who is feared for his property, that he will consume it, and expend it in that which is not right. (Mgh.) مَخِيفٌ: see the next preceding paragraph, in two places: and see also what next follows.

حَائِطٌ مُخِيفٌ (Msb, K, in the CK ↓ مَخِيفٌ,) A wall that causes one to fear that it will fall. (Msb, K. * [See also مَخُوفٌ.]) And وَجَعٌ مُخِيفٌ (S, K) A pain that causes him who sees it to fear. (S. [See, again, مَخُوفٌ.]) And أَمْرٌ مُخِيفٌ An affair, or event, that is formidable; that causes him who sees it to fear. (Msb. [See, again, مَخُوفٌ.]) And المُخِيفُ means The lion, (K, TA,) that frightens him who sees him. (TA.) See also مَخُوفٌ, first sentence.

أَخْوَفٌ [More, and most, formidable, fearful, or feared: anomalous, like its syn. أَخْشَى, being from the pass. verb. Hence,] أَخْوَفُ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ كَذَا [The most formidable, or fearful, of what I fear for you is such a thing]. 1 صَنَعَ الشَّىْءَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. صُنْعٌ and صَنْعٌ, He made, wrought, manufactured, fabricated, or constructed, the thing; syn. عَمِلَهُ: (K:) [or he made it, &c., skilfully, or well; for] الصُّنْعُ signifies إِجَادَةُ الفِعْلِ; and every صُنْع is a فِعْل, but every فِعْل is not a صُنْع; and it is not predicated of [irrational] animals [unless tropically, (see أَصْنَعُ,)] nor of inanimate things, like as الفِعْلُ is. (Er-Rághib, TA.) b2: [Hence,] صَنَعَ signifies also (assumed tropical:) [He fabricated speech or a saying or sentence or the like:] he forged a word; and poetry, عَلَى

(Bd.) You say likewise, of a woman, صَنَعَتْ نَفْسَهَا: see 5. And you say also ↓ اِصْطَنَعْتُهُ, meaning (tropical:) I reared him; and educated, disciplined, or trained, him well. (S, * O, K, TA.) And accord. to Ibn-'Abbád, followed in the O and TS and K, one says also, اصنع الأَخْرَقُ, meaning The unskilful learned, and did soundly, thoroughly, skilfully, or well: but this is a mistake, occasioned by his deeming dubious, or obscure, a passage in the Nawádir of IAar, where the latter says that اصنع الرَّجُلُ means أَعَانَ الأَخْرَقَ [i. e. The man aided, or assisted, the unskilful]. (TA.) A2: اصنع الفَرَسَ: see 1, latter half. [Freytag states, as on the authority of the K, that أَصْنَعَ, said of a horse, signifies “ Non omnibus viribus usus cucurrit, sed ita tamen ut eques eo contentus esset ” (which is nearly the same as a signification of صَانَعَ likewise mentioned by him): but this is a mistake.]5 تَصَنُّعٌ signifies The affecting a goodly way, mode, or manner, of acting, or conduct, or the like; (S, O, K, TA; [الصَّمْت in the CK is a mistranscription for السَّمْت;]) and the making a show thereof; (TA;) and the adorning oneself (K, TA) thereby, while internally unsound in the grounds of pretension to respect. (TA.) And تصنّعت, said of a woman, means نَفْسَهَا ↓ صَنَعَتْ [She cultivated and improved her person, so as to render herself comely, by art, and good nurture]: (S, O:) or she adorned, or embellished, herself. (PS.) 8 إِصْتَنَعَ see 1, former half. b2: Accord. to Er-Rághib, اِصْطِنَاعٌ signifies The exceeding the usual, or ordinary, bounds, or degree, in putting a thing into a good, sound, right, or proper, state. (TA.) b3: And hence, he says, the phrase in the Kur [xx. 43], وَاصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِى, which means (assumed tropical:) And I have chosen thee [for myself] to establish my evidence and to serve as my spokesman between me and my creatures so that thy doing thus shall be as though I did it: (TA:) or it means I have reared thee, (Az, TA,) or I have chosen thee, (O, K, TA,) [for myself,] for a special affair which I require thee to accomplish in a sufficient manner, (Az, O, K, TA,) concerning Pharaoh and his forces. b5: And اصطنعهُ [in which the pronoun seems to refer to رِزْق i. e. sustenance, &c.,] also signifies قَدَّمَهُ [app. meaning He offered it]. (TA.) b6: And اصطنع [alone, for اصطنع مَصْنَعَةً,] (tropical:) He made, or prepared, a repast, feast, or banquet, to which to invite friends. صِنْعٌ A tailor: (O, K:) or one who is gentle, delicate, or skilful, (رَفِيق, O,) or thin, fine, or delicate, (رَقِيق, so in the copies of the K,) or slender, or small, (دَقِيق, so in the TA,) [of which readings that in the O is app. the right,] in respect of the hands. الأَيْدِى, and الأَيْدِى ↓ صَنَعَى, and الأَيْدِى ↓ صِنْعَى, (K,) [all of which are instances of quasi-pl. ns., except, perhaps, the last, which is said in the TA to be a pl. of ↓ صِنْع,] and أَصْنَاعُ الأَيْدِى, (K, [in the CK, erroneously, اَصْنَاعِى,]) which is pl. of اليَدِ ↓ صِنْعُ or of اليَدِ ↓ صَنِيعُ, or, accord. to Sh, as IB says, the only pl. of ↓ صِنْعٌ is صِنْعُونَ, and in like manner in the case of ↓ صُنْع you say صُنْعُو اليَدِ, (TA,) and رِجَالٌ صُنُعٌ is mentioned as on the authority of Sb, (K,) and Sh is related to have said قَوْمٌ صَنْعُونَ, [using the latter word as pl. of ↓ صَنْعٌ,] with the ن quiescent. (TA.) And you say ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ صَنَاعٌ, (ISk, Mgh, Msb, TA,) and اليَدَيْنِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, (S, O, K,) and اليَدِ ↓ صَنَاعُ, (IJ, TA,) an instance of an epithet applied to a woman like كَعَابٌ and رَدَاحٌ and حَصَانٌ, (TA,) the ا of prolongation before the final letter resembling, and rendering needless, the ة in صَنَعَةٌ, (IJ, TA,) which is not allowable, (IJ, * Mgh, Msb, TA, *) though an instance of it occurs used on the ground of analogy: (Mgh:) A woman skilful in the work of the hands or hand; (ISk, S, O, K, TA;) who makes things in a suitable manner; who sews, and cuts out or makes, leathern buckets; (ISk, TA;) contr. of خَرْقَآءُ; (Mgh, Msb;) and ↓ اِمْرَأَةٌ صَنِيعَةٌ signifies the same: (TA:) and اِمْرَأَتَانِ صَنَاعَانِ: and نِسْوَةٌ صُنُعٌ. (S, O, K.) Th preferred صَنَعُ اليَدِ as applied to a man; and اليَدِ ↓ صَنَاعُ as applied to a woman. (IB, TA.) Accord. to IDrst, صَنَعٌ is an inf. n. used as an epithet. (TA. [But see 1, last sentence.]) It is said in a prov., ثَلَّةً ↓ لَا تَعْدَمُ صَنَاعٌ [expl. in art. ثل]. (TA.) b2: [Hence,] one says of a poet, and of any one who is eloquent, رَجُلٌ صَنَعُ الِلّسَانِ (tropical:) [A man skilful in the use of the tongue]: and in like manner, لِسَانٌ صَنَعٌ (tropical:) [a skilful tongue]. صَنْعَةٌ Work or handiwork, an art, a craft or handicraft, or a trade; (KL;) as also ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ: (KL, PS:) any habitual work or occupation of a man; as also حِرْفَةٌ; (K in art. حرف;) [and so ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ, as is indicated in the K voce حِرْفَةٌ; whence] one says, صِنَاعَتُهُ رِعَايَةُ الإِبِلِ [His habitual work or occupation, or his business, is the tending, or pasturing, of camels]: (M, and K in art. رعى:) or صَنْعَةٌ [more particularly] signifies the work of the صَانِع; (S, O, K;) [a manufacture, or work of art; and workmanship, or the skill of a worker, which last meaning is plainly indicated in the O, and by common usage:] and ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ, the حِرْفَة [i. e. craft, or habitual work or occupation,] of the صَانِع, (S, Mgh, O, Msb, * K,) meaning of him who works with his hand: (Mgh:) the pl. of ↓ صِنَاعَةٌ is [صَنَائِعُ and] صِنَاعَاتٌ. (KL.) b2: It is also an inf. n. of 1 as used in the phrase صَنَعْتُ فَرَسِى [q. v.]. (S, O, K, TA.) أَسْهُمٌ صُنْعَةٌ, with damm, Arrows that are equal, equable, uniform, or even, the work of one man. (TA.) [Perhaps صُنْعَةٌ is a quasi-pl. n. of صَنِيعٌ applied to an arrow.]

صُنُوعٌ in a sense in which it is used in a verse of Aboo-Dhu-eyb is a pl. of which ISd says, “I know not any sing. thereof: ” accord. to Skr, it means The خُرَز [app. either the seams or the stitch-holes] of a مَزَادَة or of an إِدَاوَة: or, as some say, the thongs used in the sewing thereof: and some say the making thereof, so that in this case it is an inf. n. (TA.) صَنِيعٌ an inf. n. of 1 [q. v.]. (MA.) b2: and i. q. ↓ مَصْنُوعٌ [meaning Made, wrought, manufactured, fabricated, or constructed: or made, &c., skilfully, or well: see 1, first sentence]. (TA.) b3: [Hence,] (tropical:) Food (O, K, TA) that is made, or prepared, and to which people are invited; (TA;) and ↓ مَصْنَعَةٌ signifies [the same, i. e.] (tropical:) a repast, feast, or banquet, to which friends are invited: (O, K, TA:) one says, كُنْتُ فِى صَنِيعِ فُلَانٍ (tropical:) I was at the repast of such a one, made, or prepared, by him, to which people were invited: and ↓ المَصْنَعَةِ (tropical:) the repast to which friends were invited. (Ham ubi suprà.) and [particularly] A good deed, a benefit, favour, or kind act; (O, K, TA;) and so ↓ صَنِيعَةٌ: (S, * O, Msb, K:) [see a verse cited voce مَصْنَعٌ:] pl. [of either, of the latter agreeably with rule,] صَنَائِعُ. (O, K.) A2: Also Skilful in work of the hands or hand: (S, O, K, TA:) fem. [in this sense] with ة. (TA.) See صَنَعٌ, in four places. Accord. to IDrst, ↓ صَنِعٌ [likewise] signifies Skilled, or skilful, as part. n. of صَنِعَ; but IB says that صَنِعَ has not been heard. (TA.) صِنَاعَةٌ: see صَنْعَةٌ, in four places. The saying of 'Alee, يُؤْخَذُ مِنْ كُلِّ صِنَاعَةٍ صِنَاعَتُهُ, if correctly related, means يُؤْخَذُ مِنْ كُلِّ ذِى صِنَاعَةٍ مَصْنُوعُهُ [From every one possessing skill in manufacture should be taken, or procured, that which he has manufactured: or perhaps مِنْ is a mistake for عَنْ, and the meaning is, from every craftsman is to be acquired his craft]. (Mgh.) صَنِيعَةٌ: see صَنِيعٌ, latter half, in four places.

صَنَاعِيَةٌ Persons who tend their camels well, and fatten the young ones thereof, and give not their camels' milk to guests: occurring in a verse of 'Ámir Ibn-Et-Tufeyl. (TA, in this art. and in art. صلمع.) صَنَائِعِىٌّ: see صَانِعٌ.

صَنَّاعٌ [An expert صَانِع i. e. manufacturer &c.] (TA. [There mentioned only as a proper name, or surname.]) صَنَّاعَةٌ: see صِنْعٌ, former half.

صَانِعٌ A handicraftsman; manufacturer; or worker, or maker, with his hand; (S, * Mgh, O, * Msb, * K;) or one having a صَنْعَة [i. e. craft &c.] which he exercises; (TA;) [an artificer, or artisan;] and ↓ صَنَائِعِىٌّ is [used in the same sense, and particularly as meaning one who works for hire under a master; being] a rel. n. from صَنَائِعُ [pl. of صِنَاعَةٌ], like أَنْمَاطِىٌّ and أَنْصَارِىٌّ: (TA:) the pl. of صَانِعٌ is صُنَّاعٌ. (Msb, TA.) صَوْنَعٌ: see صَنْعٌ.

أَصْنَعُ [More, or most, skilled in working with the hands, manufacturing, fabricating, or constructing]. See an ex. voce سُرْفَةٌ, and another voce تَنَوُّطٌ.

مَصْنَعٌ [may be sued, agreeably with analogy, as an inf. n.: and as a n. of place, and of time]. A poet says, إِنَّ الصَّنِيعَةَ لا تَكُونُ صَنِيعَةً

حَتَّى يُصَابَ بِهَا طَرِيقُ المَصْنَعِ [which may be rendered Verily that which is a good deed considered abstractedly, or without relation to the manner or object &c., will not be a good deed in effect except, or unless, the way of the doing, or the way that leads to the place (here meaning the object) of the doing, be rightly hit upon therewith]. (O, TA.) b2: In the following verse of Náfi' Ibn-Lakeet, (TA in this art. and in art. ريش,) wrongly ascribed by J [in arts.

ريش and مرط] to Lebeed, (TA in art. ريش,) and ascribed by others to other poets, (TA in art. مرط,) it is expl. by IAar as signifying A place that is deemed goodly [in workmanship]; syn. مُسْتَمْلَحٌ [a n. of place, accord. to a general rule, as well as pass. part. n.: or مَصْنَعٌ may be here more literally rendered a place of skilful workmanship]: the poet says, مُرُطُ القِذَاذِ فَلَيْسَ فِيهِ مَصْنَعٌ لَا الرِّيشُ يَنْفَعُهُ وَلَا التَّعْقِيبُ (TA in the present art.) meaning Having no feathers upon it, [and having in it no place exhibiting skilful workmanship, neither the feathers being of use to it] nor the binding around with sinews. مَصْنَعَةٌ (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K) and مَصْنُعَةٌ (S, O, K) and ↓ مَصْنَعٌ (O, Msb, K) [A kind of tank, or reservoir, for rain-water; i. e.] a thing like a حَوْض, (S, Mgh, O, K, TA,) or like a صِهْرِيج (Msb, TA) and a بِرْكَة, (Msb,) that is made, or constructed, (Mgh, Msb,) for collecting the water of the rain: (S, Mgh, O, Msb, K, TA:) pl. مَصَانِعُ, (O, Msb, K, TA,) a pl. of all the three words above, expl. by As as meaning excavations which people make for the rain-water, which they fill therewith, and from which they drink; and مَصَانِيعُ is another pl. of مَصْنَعَةٌ, the ى being inserted by poetic license; or it may be pl. of ↓ مَصْنُوعٌ or مَصْنُوعَةٌ: and ↓ صِنْعٌ [in like manner] signifies a حَوْض or a thing like a صِهْرِيج: and صُنُوعٌ is said to be a pl. thereof: (TA:) or صِنْعٌ signifies a watering-trough, or tank, made for the rain-water, and not cased with baked bricks; and its pl. is أَصْنَاعٌ. 1 صَرَمَهُ, (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K,) aor. ـِ (M, Msb, K,) inf. n. صَرْمٌ (S, M, Msb, K) and صُرْمٌ, (M, K,) or the latter is a simple subst., (M, Msb,) He cut it, syn. قَطَعَهُ, (S, M, Mgh, Msb,) in any manner: [i. e. it signifies also he cut it through; or he cut it off, or severed it; for thus the meaning of قَطَعَهُ is generally explained:] (M:) or it signifies [only] he cut it (قَطَعَهُ) so as to separate it: (M, K:) namely, a thing, (S,) such as a rope, and a raceme of dates. (TA.) One says, صُرِمَتْ أُذُنُهُ i. q. صُلِمَتْ [i. e. His ear was cut off, entirely]. (TA.) And صَرَمَ النَّخْلَ, (S, M, Msb, K,) and الشَّجَرَ, (M, K,) and الزَّرْعَ, aor. as above, inf. n. صَرْمٌ, (M,) He cut off the fruit, or produce, of the palm-trees, (S, M, Msb, * K,) and the trees, (M, K,) and the corn, or the like; (M;) as also ↓ اصطرمهُ. (S, M, K.) b2: [Hence,] صَرَمَهُ, (S, M, MA, K,) [aor. as above,] inf. n. صَرْمٌ (S, MA,) or صُرْمٌ, (M, MA,) or the latter is a simple subst., (S,) (assumed tropical:) He cut him (i. e. another man); meaning he ceased to speak to him, or to associate with him; he cut him off from friendly, or loving, communion or intercourse; forsook him, or abandoned him; syn. قَطَعَ كَلَامَهُ; (S, M, K;) and هَجَرَهُ: (A and Mgh and K in art. هجر:) or he cut himself off, or separated himself, from him, namely, his friend; he cut off [or withdrew] his friendship from him. (MA.) [See an ex. in a verse cited voce أَبَّ.] And صَرَمَ وَصْلَهُ, aor. as above, inf. n. صَرْمٌ and صُرْمٌ, (assumed tropical:) [He cut, or severed, his bond of union,] as indicative of resemblance [to the act of cutting, or severing, properly thus termed]. (M.) b3: And صَرَمَ أَمْرَهُ (assumed tropical:) [He decided his affair]. (O voce ضَهْيَأَ, q. v. [See also صَارِمٌ, and صَرِيمَةٌ.]) A2: صَرَمَ is also intrans., as syn. with انصرم, q. v. (M, K.) And [hence] one says, أَدْبَرَتِ الدُّنْيَا بِصَرْمٍ i. e. (assumed tropical:) [Worldly good departed] by becoming cut off, or by ceasing, and coming to an end. (TA.) b2: One says also, صَرَمَ عِنْدَنَا شَهْرًا, meaning (assumed tropical:) He stopped, stayed, or tarried, with us a month: (K, TA:) mentioned by El-Mufad- dal, on the authority of his father. (TA.) A3: صَرَمَ, (Msb,) [aor. ـُ inf. n. صَرَامَةٌ and صُرُومَةٌ, (M,) It (a sword) was, or became, sharp, (M, Msb,) and did not bend. (M.) b2: And [hence,] صَرُمَ inf. n. صَرَامَةٌ, said of a man, (S, M, Msb, K, TA,) as being likened to a sword, (TA,) (tropical:) He was, or became, courageous; (Msb;) or hardy, strong, or sturdy, (S, TA,) or sharp, penetrating, or vigorous and effective, (M, K, TA,) and courageous. (S, M, K, TA.) 2 صرّمهُ [He cut it; cut it through; or cut it off, or severed it; namely, a number of things considered collectively; or a single thing much, or in several places]: (M:) تَصْرِيمُ الحِبَالِ signifies تَقْطِيعُهَا [i. e. the severing of the ropes]: the verb being with teshdeed to denote muchness [of the action], or multiplicity [of the objects]. (S, TA.) [Hence, تَصْرِيمُ الأَطْبَآءِ The cutting off of the teats of camels: a phrase mentioned in the TA.]3 صارمهُ, (MA,) inf. n. مُصَارَمَةٌ, (KL, TA,) (assumed tropical:) He effected a disunion with him: (MA:) or he cut him off from himself, being in like manner cut off by him: (KL:) or he cut him off from friendly, or loving, communion or intercourse, being so cut off by him: forsook him, or abandoned him, being forsaken, or abandoned, by him: cut him, i. e. ceased to speak to him, being in like manner cut by him: for المُصَارَمَةُ signifies المُهَاجَرَةُ and قَطْعُ الكَلَامِ. (TA.) 4 اصرم النَّخْلُ The palm-trees attained, or were near, to the time, or season, for the cutting off of their fruit. (S, M, Msb, K, TA.) b2: and [hence perhaps,] اصرم said of a man, (S, K, TA,) inf. n. إِصْرَامٌ, (TA,) (assumed tropical:) He was, or became, poor, (S, K,) having a numerous family, or household: (K:) or in a evil condition, though having in him intelligence (تَمَاسُك): [it is said that] the original meaning is he had a صِرْمَة, i. e. portion, of property remaining to him. (TA.) 5 تصرّم quasi-pass. of صَرَّمَهُ; (M;) i. q. تقطّع [i. e. It became cut; cut through; or cut off, or severed; said of number of things considered collectively; or of a single thing as meaning it became cut, &c., much, or in many places, or into many pieces]. (M, K, TA.) b2: [Hence,] انصرم مِنَ النَّاسِ [or عَنِ النَّاسِ] (assumed tropical:) He separated himself from mankind; said of the wolf and of the crow [&c.]. (ISk, S, M. *) And انصرم اللَّيْلُ (assumed tropical:) The night went away, or departed; as also ↓ تصرّم: (Msb:) and انصرم الشِّتَآءُ (assumed tropical:) The winter ended; and ↓ تصرّمت السَّنَةُ (assumed tropical:) The year ended: (TA:) and القِتَالُ ↓ تصرّم (assumed tropical:) The fighting ended, or ceased. صَرْمٌ Skin: [or leather:] (S, Mgh, Msb, K:) a Pers\. word (S, Msb) arabicized, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) originally جَرْم [correctly چَرْم]. (Mgh, Msb, TA.) صُرْمٌ is an inf. n. like صَرْمٌ, (M, K,) or a simple subst.: (M, Msb:) [see the first paragraph, in three places: in one of its senses, there expl.,] it is syn. with هِجْرَانٌ and قَطِيعَةٌ: (TA:) and ↓ صَرِيمَةٌ [likewise] signifies (assumed tropical:) Separation from a friend: pl. صُرَمٌ. (MA. [This pl. is app. there mentioned as of صَرِيمَةٌ; but it is more probably of صُرْمٌ.]) A2: صُرْمُ الدِّيكِ: see دَلِيكٌ.

صِرْمٌ Tents (أَبْيَاتٌ), (S, M,) of men, (S,) collected together, (S, M,) separate from [those of other] men: (M:) or i. q. صِرْبٌ, (O in art. صرب,) which means a few tents (بُيُوت [in the O, erroneously, بُتُوت]) of the weak sort of the Arabs of the desert: (IAar, O, * K, TA; all in art. صرب:) and hence, (M,) a company (M, Msb, K, TA) of men, (Msb, TA,) not many; or simply a company (TA) alighting and abiding with their camels by the side of the water: (Msb, TA:) pl. أَصْرَامٌ [a pl. of pauc.] (S, M, Msb, K) and أَصَارِمُ, (S,) or أَصَارِيمُ, (M,) or both, (K,) but accord. to IB the latter of these two is the right, [being a pl. pl., i. e. pl. of أَصْرَامٌ,] (TA,) and صُرْمَانٌ, (Sb, M, K,) with damm. (K.) b2: And i. q. ضَرْبٌ. (K. [So, app., in all the copies; accord. to the TK as meaning A sort, or species: but I think it most probable that this is a mistranscription for صِرْبٌ, with which, as has been stated above, صِرْمٌ is syn. accord. to the O.]) A2: Also i. q. خُفٌّ مُنْعَلٌ (M) or خُفٌّ مُنَعَّلٌ (K) [i. e. A soled boot: that خُفّ here means a boot, not a camel's foot, is indicated by its being immediately added by SM that]

↓ صَرَّامٌ signifies A seller thereof. (TA.) صَرْمَةٌ [an epithet applied to a man, but used as a subst., and therefore having for its pl. صَرَمَاتٌ]. One says, هُوَ صَرْمَةٌ مِنَ الصَّرَمَاتِ, [the last word said to be thus (مُحَرَّكَة) in the TA, but in the CK (in which as well as in my MS. copy of the K من is omitted) written الصَّرْماتِ,] meaning (tropical:) He is [a person] slow to revert from his anger. (K, TA.) A2: Also, [if not a mistranscription for ↓ صِرْمَة,] A portion of silver, melted, and cleared of its dross, and poured forth into a mould. (TA.) صِرْمَة A herd, or detached number, of camels, (S, M, Mgh, Msb, K,) consisting of about thirty: (S:) or from twenty to thirty: (M, K:) or from thirty to five and forty: (M:) or to fifty, and forty; (K;) if amounting to sixty, termed صِدْعَة: (TA: [but see this latter word:]) or from ten to forty: (M, Msb, K:) or from ten to some number between that and twenty: (M, K:) or more than a ذَوْد [which is at least two or three] up to thirty: (T voce إِبِلٌ:) or about forty: (Ham p.

صَرَامٌ and ↓ صِرَامٌ The cutting off of the fruit of palm-trees: (S, * Msb, and L voce جَدَادٌ:) and (L voce جَذَادٌ) the time, or season, thereof: (S, L:) or the time, or season, of the ripening of the fruit of palm-trees. (M, K.) A2: صَرَامِ: see the next paragraph, in two places.

A2: Also The last milk [remaining in the udder] after what is termed التَّغْرِيز [which is variously explained (see 2 in art. غرز), in the CK and in one of my copies of the S erroneously written التَّغْزِير,] which a man draws when in need of it. (S, K. *) Bishr says, أَلَا أَبْلِغْ بَنِى سَعْدٍ رَسُولًا وَمَوْلَا هُمْ فَقَدْ حُلِبَتْ صُرَامُ

[Now deliver thou to Benoo-Saad a message, and to their chief, that the last milk in the udder has been drawn]: (S:) the last two words [the latter of which is written in the CK ↓ صَرامِ] are a prov., meaning (assumed tropical:) the excuse has reached its uttermost: (S, K:) thus says AO: (S:) IB says that صُرَامُ in the saying of Bishr means the she-camel that is termed ↓ الصَّرْمَآءُ, that has no milk; [i.e. that the phrase means the she-camel that has now no milk has been milked;] and that he makes it a proper name; and that he [also] means thereby the latter of the two senses here following. (TA.) b2: الصُّرَامُ is also one of the names for War, or battle; (As, S, K; *) and so ↓ صَرَامِ, [indecl.,] like قَطَامِ: (K:) and one of the names for calamity, or misfortune. (TA.) صَرِيمٌ i. q. ↓ مَصْرُومٌ, (M, Msb,) Cut; cut through; or cut off, or severed: (S, Msb, K:) and having the fruit cut off; syn. مَجْدُودٌ; (S, K;) applied to palm-trees (نَخْل). (M.) and the former, A heap (كُدْس) of corn or the like that has been cut, or of which the produce has been cut off; syn. ↓ مَصْرُومٌ. (M, TA.) and Whose ear has been cut off entirely (اَلَّذِى صُرِمَتْ

أُذُنُهُ): pl. صُرْمٌ. (TA. [See also the fem., with ة, voce بَحِيرَةٌ, where the pl. is said to be صُرُمٌ.]) b2: [Applied to the lungs, it means properly Burst asunder. Hence the saying,] جَآءَ صَرِيمَ سَحَرٍ, [so in copies of the K, accord. the TA سِحْر, but correctly either سَحَرٍ or سَحْرٍ q. v., in the CK باءَ and صَرِيمُ, which last word is obviously wrong,] meaning (tropical:) He came disappointed of attaining what he desired, or sought, and in a state of despair. (K, TA.) And هُوَ صَرَيمُ سحرٍ عَلَى هٰذَا الأَمْرِ [i. e. صَرِيمُ سَحْرٍ or سَحَرٍ] (tropical:) He is wearied and eager for this thing, or affair. (TA.) b3: Also (assumed tropical:) An affair decided, determined, or resolved, upon. The phrase in the Kur [lxviii. 20] فَأَصْبَحَتٌ كَالصَّرِيمِ means [And it became in the morning] burnt up and black like the night: (S, M, Bd, TA:) or like the dark night, being burnt up: (Er-Rághib, TA:) or like the black night: (Katádeh, TA:) or like the day, by its whiteness from excessive dryness: (Bd:) or like that garden of which the fruits have been cut off: (Bd, TA: *) or like the sands [that are termed صَرِيم (see صَرِيمَةٌ)]: (Bd:) or the meaning of صريم in this instance is that which here next follows. (TA.) b6: Black land, that does not give growth to anything. (K.) b7: And A piece of wood, or stick, which is placed across upon the mouth of a kid, (M, K,) or of a young weaned camel, and then tied to his head, (M,) in order that he may not such. (M, K.) صَرَامَةٌ (tropical:) A man (TA) who follows his own opinion, cutting himself off from consultation with others: (M, TA:) or who acts with penetrative energy, or vigorousness and effectiveness, in the performing of his affairs: an inf. n. used as an epithet. (TA.) صُرَامَةٌ What is cut off [of the fruit] of palmtrees. (Lh, M.) صَرِيمَةٌ Land (أَرْض) of which the seed-produce has been reaped: (S, K:) of the measure فَعِيلَةٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولَةٌ. (TA.) b2: and A portion, (S, M, K,) or large portion, (TA,) detached from the main aggregate, of sand; (S, M, K;) as also ↓ صَرِيمٌ: (M, K:) [or the latter is a coll. gen. n., being used in a pl. sense:] one says أَفْعَى صَرِيمَةٍ (S) or ↓ صَرِيمٍ (K) [A viper of a detached sand-heap or of detached sand-heaps]; like as one says حَيَّةُ خَلٍّ. A2: Also (assumed tropical:) Decision, or determination, (S, M, K TA,) عَلَى شَىْءٍ [to do a thing]: (S, TA:) and the deciding of an affair, (M, K, TA,) and the firm, or sound, execution thereof: (TA:) or an object of want upon accomplishment of which one has decided, or determined; as also عَزِيمَةٌ: (AHeyth, TA:) pl. صَرَائِمُ. (TA.) One says, هُوَ مَاضِ الصَّرِيمَةِ and الصَّرَائِمِ [He is effective of decision &c. and of decisions &c.]. (TA.) b2: See also صُرْمٌ.

صُرَيْمَةٌ A detached number [or a small detached number, for it is app. dim. of صِرْمَةٌ,] of camels. (TA.) صَرَّامٌ: see صَارِمٌ. b2: Also A preparer, or seller, of صَرْم, (MA,) whence it is derived, (Mgh,) i. e. skin, or leather: (MA:) or it signifies as expl. voce صِرْمٌ, last sentence. (TA.) صَارِمٌ Cutting; cutting through; or cutting off, or severing; and Sb says that ↓ صَرِيمٌ is used in the same sense, like as ضَرِيب in the phrase ضَرِيبُ قِدَاحٍ is used in the sense of ضَارِب. (M.) إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَارِمِينَ, in the Kur [lxviii. 22], means If ye be deciding, or determining, upon the cutting off of the fruit of the palm-trees. [Such a one eats] once (K, TA) in the day: but AHát says, I asked El-Asma'ee respecting the بَزْمَة and the صَيْرَم, and he said, I know it not: this is the language of the devil. (TA.) أَصْرَمُ A man having the extremity of his ear cut off. b4: Also, (S, K,) or فَلَاةٌ صَرْمَآءُ, (M,) A desert in which is no water. (S, M, K. [See also one of the explanations of the dual, here following.]) b5: الأَصْرَمَانِ signifies The wolf and the crow; (ISk, S, M, K;) because of their separating themselves (ISk, S, M) from mankind: (ISk, S:) and the [bird called] صُرَد and the crow: and the night and the day; (K, TA;) because each is cut off from the other. (TA.) El-Marrár says, عَلَى صَرْمَآءَ فِيهَا أَصْرَمَاهَا وَخِرِّيتُ الفَلَاةِ بِهَا مَلِيلُ

[Upon a waterless desert, in which are its wolf and crow, and in which the skilful guide of the desert is burned by the sun]. (ISk, S, M.) and تَرَكْتُهُ بِوَحْشِ الأَصْرَمَيْنِ is a saying mentioned by Lh, but not expl. by him: (M, TA:) ISd says, (TA,) in my opinion it means, [I left him in] the desert, or waterless desert: (M, TA:) or, accord. to Z, in a desert, or waterless desert, in which was nothing but the wolf and the crow. (TA.) مَصْرِمٌ A narrow place, that quickly flows with water: (K, TA:) so called because the flow of water is quickly cut off from it. (TA.) مُصْرِمٌ A possessor of a صِرْمَة of camels. (TA.) b2: And [hence], as also ↓ أَصْرَمُ, (M, K,) Having little property: (M:) or poor, [and] having a numerous household, or family. (K.) One says, كَلَأٌ تِيجَعُ مِنْهُ كَبِدُ المُصْرِمِ [Herbage by reason of which the liver of him who has little property is pained]; i. e., abundant, so that when he who has little property sees it, he grieves that he has not many camels which he may pasture upon it. (M.) مِصْرَمٌ The curved knife of the parer of spindles. (S, MA, K.) مُصَرَّمَةٌ A she-camel whose [fore or kind] pair of teats have been cut off, (S, M, K,) in order that the إِحْلِيل [or orifice through which the milk passes forth from the udder of each teat] may dry up and the milk not issue, for the purpose of giving greater strength to her: and (AA used to say, S) this is sometimes in consequence of the stoppage of the milk, something having happened to the udder, for which it is cauterized, and her milk stops, (S, K,) no milk ever issuing from the udder: (S:) see also صَرْمَآءُ, voce أَصْرَمُ: or مُصَرَّمَةُ الأَطْبَآءِ means a she-camel treated (عُولِجَتْ) so that her milk has stopped. وَابْتِذَالٍ: see 1 in art. بذل. b4: And صان الفَرَسُ, aor. ـُ inf. n. صَوْنٌ, means صَفَّ بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ [app. the same as صَفَّ رِجْلَيْهِ He set his hind legs evenly, side by side]: (M:) or he stood upon the extremity of his hoof, (S, M, K,) by reason of [attenuation, or abrasion, such as is termed]

وَجًى or حَفًا. (S, K.) b5: And صان, inf. n. صَوْنٌ, He (a horse) limped, or halted, much; (M;) or, as expl. by IB, slightly. (TA.) يَصُنَّ المَشْىَ occurs in a verse (S, M, TA) of En-Nábighah, (M, TA,) [referring to horses,] and J says that As knew it not, but that others expl. it as meaning Reserving somewhat of the rate of going, (TA,) or as meaning suffering pain in the hoofs from attenuation, or abrasion: (S:) accord. to IB, it means limping, or halting, and suffering pain in the hoofs, from fatigue. (TA.) 5 تَصَوَّنَ see the next paragraph.6 تَصَاوُنٌ is the contr. of اِبْتِذَالٌ, (Msb,) or of تَبَذُّلٌ: (S and Msb in art. بذل:) one says, of a man, تَصَاوَنَ and ↓ تَصَوَّنَ, the latter on the authority of IJ, (M, TA,) and mentioned also by Z, (TA,) (assumed tropical:) He preserved himself, or his honour, or reputation, (M, TA,) مِنَ المَعَايِبِ [from the things, or actions, for which he should be blamed], (TA. [See also 1, second sentence.]) 8 إِصْتَوَنَ see 1, first sentence.

صَوْنٌ an inf. n. of 1 [q. v.]. (S, M, &c.) See also صِينَةٌ, below. b2: And see مَصُونٌ.

صَوْنَةٌ [A receptacle for perfumes &c., such as is commonly called] an عَتِيدَة. (IAar, K.) صِينَةٌ [originally صَوْنَةٌ] i. q. ↓ صَوْنٌ: one says, هٰذِهِ ثِيَابُ الصِّينَةِ i. e. الصَّوْنِ [These are the garments of reservation for wear on extraordinary occasions]: (M, TA:) contr. of بِذْلَةٌ. (TA.) صِوَانٌ and صُوَانٌ (S, M, Msb, K) and صَوَانٌ (K) and صِيَانٌ (S, Msb, K) and صُيَانٌ and صَيَانٌ, (K,) but the third and the last two are extr., (TA,) A thing, (M, Msb, K,) or receptacle, (S,) [or chest or the like,] used as a repository (S, M, Msb, K) for a garment, (S, K,) as also ↓ مَصَانٌ, (Skr, cited by Reiske in Abulf. Ann. ii. 614,) [or for clothes,] or for a thing: (M, Msb:) pl. أصْونَةٌ: (MA:) or ↓ مَصَانٌ signifies any place in which one reposits a garment. (TA in art. ضرس.) صَوَانِىُّ pl. of صِينِىٌّ. (KL.) صَوَّانٌ [Flint-stone; and flint-stones: thus in the present day:] a sort of stones, (S, Msb,) in which is hardness; (Msb;) hard stones, (M, K,) of a certain sort, (K,) with which fire is struck: or, as some say, certain black stones which are not hard: (M:) or a sort of hard stones, which, when fire smites it, crackles (يُفَقِّعُ) and cracks, and sometimes fire is struck with it, but it is not fit for [making] time, nor for heating for the purpose of roasting thereon: (Az, TA:) one thereof is called ↓ صَوَّانَةٌ. (S, M, Msb, K.) الصَّوَّانَةُ The دُبُر [meaning anus]: (K, TA:) so called because it keeps [from escape] much, or often, what would issue from it. (TA.) A2: See also صَوَّانٌ.

1 سَادَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. سِيَادَةٌ (Msb, TA) and سُودٌ and سُودَدٌ [and its vars. mentioned in the next sentence] and سَيْدُودَةٌ, (TA,) or سُودَدٌ is a simple subst. signifying as expl. below, (Msb,) He was, or became, [a سَيِّد, i. e. chief, lord, master, &c.; or] possessed of glory, honour, dignity, eminence, exalted or elevated state, or nobility. (TA.) b2: [Hence, سوّد وَجْهَهُ lit. Nuseyb says, فَلَمْ أَمْلِكْ سَوَادِى وَتَحْتَهُ ↓ سَوِدْتُ قَمِيصٌ مِنَ القُوهِىِّ بِيضٌ بَنَائِقُهْ [I am black, (for Nuseyb was a slave,) and am not master of my person; but beneath it, or within it, is a shirt like the cloth of Koohistán, the gores of which are white: by this قميص he means his heart; القَمِيصُ, or قَمِيصُ القَلْبِ, tropically meaning “ the pericardium; ” and, by a synecdoche, “the heart itself, with its appertenances ”]. سَوْدٌ A سَفْح (M, K, TA) of a mountain, (M, TA,) [app. meaning, in this case, a low tract at the base, or foot, of a mountain,] forming a narrow strip of ground, (M, TA,) rough and black, (M,) or level, abounding with black stones, (K, TA,) which are rough, and the predominant colour whereof is blackness; seldom found but at a mountain in which is a mine: so says Lth: or a piece of ground in which are black rough stones resembling dry human dung: (TA:) or land, or ground, in which blackness predominates, which is seldom anywhere but at a mountain in which is a mine: (Msb:) pl. أَسْوَادٌ: (M, TA:) and ↓ سَوْدَةٌ signifies a portion thereof; (M, Msb, K, TA;) and the pl. of this is سَوْدَاتٌ, and the pl. of سَوْدَاتٌ is ↓ أَسْوَادَتٌ, which occurs in a trad. سَوَادٍ وَتَأْكُلُ فِى سَوَادٍ وَتَنْظُرُ فِى سَوَادٍ [The sheep, or goat, walks in blackness, and eats in blackness, and looks in blackness]; meaning the blackness of its legs and of its mouth and of what is around its eyes. (Mgh, * Msb.) And إِذَا كَثُرَ البَيَاضُ قَلَّ السَّوَادُ [When whiteness becomes much, blackness becomes little]; by whiteness meaning milk; and by blackness, dates. (TA.) b2: Black clothing. One says, اِجْعَلْهُمْ فِى سَوَادِ قَلْبِكَ (A, TA) and ↓ سُوَيْدَائِهِ (A) (tropical:) [Place them in the inmost part of thy heart; i. e. give them the best, or most intimate, place in thy affections]. (S, M.) El-Asshà says, تَنَاهَيْتُمُ عَنَّا وَقَدْ كَانَ فِيكُمُ

أَسَاوِدُ صَرْعَى لَمْ يُوَسَّدْ قَتِيلُهَا [Ye refrained from retaliating upon us when there were among you prostrate persons the slain whereof had not been pillowed in graves]: by the اساود meaning the شُخُوص of the slain. (S.) And it is said in a trad., إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ سَوَادًا بِلَيْلٍ فَلَا يَكُنْ أَجْبَنَ السَّوَادَيْنِ فَإِنَّهُ يَخَافُكَ كَمَا تَخَافُهُ [When any one of you sees a bodily form, or a person, by night, let him not be the more cowardly of the two bodily forms, or persons; for he feareth thee, like as thou fearest him]: سوادا here meaning شَخْصًا. (L.) The saying لَا يُزَايِلُ سَوَادِى بَيَاضَكَ is expl. by As as meaning لَا يُزايِلُ شَخْصِى شَخْصَكَ [i. e. My person will not separate itself from thy person]: سَوَادٌ, with the Arabs, meaning شَخْصٌ, and in like manner بَيَاضٌ. (IAar, L.) [Hence, app.,] قَالَ لِىَ الشَّرُّ أَقِمْ سَوَادَكَ [as though lit. signifying Evil said to me, Erect thy person]; meaning (assumed tropical:) be thou patient: a prov. (Msb.) سُوَادٌ Secret speech with another; as also سِوَادٌ: (M, K, TA:) each a subst. from سَاوَدَهُ, accord. to A'Obeyd: (M, TA:) but [ISd says,] in my opinion the latter is the inf. n. of سَاوَدَ, [and as such it has been mentioned above, (see 3,)] and the former is the simple subst., the two words being like مُزَاحٌ and مِزَاحٌ: (M:) As disallowed the former, but it is authorized by AO and others. (TA.) A2: Also A certain disease incident to sheep or goats. (K.) b2: And A certain disease incident to man; (K;) a pain that attacks the liver, in consequence of eating dates, and that sometimes, or often, kills. (TA.) سَيِّدٌ, (S, M, K, &c.,) of the measure فَعِيلٌ; [originally سَوِيدٌ, for a reason to be mentioned below; the kesreh upon the و, being deemed difficult of pronunciation, is suppressed, and the quiescent و and ى thus coming thgether, the latter receives the rejected kesreh, and the و is changed into ى and incorporated into the augmentative ى; as in the case of جَيِّدٌ with those who hold it to be originally جَوِيدٌ;] or, accord. to the Basrees, it is of the measure فَيْعِلٌ; [originally سَيْوِدٌ;] (S;) and also ↓ سَيْدٌ; (Mz, 40th نوع, section on the class of هَيِّنٌ and هَيْنٌ;) A chief, lord, or master: (M, L, Mgh, Msb: [accord. to the last of which, this is a secondary signification, as will be seen below:]) a prince, or king: (Fr, L:) one who is set before, or over, others: a master of a household: (L:) a woman's husband: (Fr, M, Msb:) a possessor, an owner, or a proprietor: (L, Msb:) a slave's master, or owner: (Fr, M, Msb:) a superior in rank or station or condition; one possessing pre-eminence or excel-lence; a man of rank or quality; a personage; a man of distinction: (L:) one who surpasses others in intelligence and property, and in repelling injury, and in beneficence, or usefulness, who makes a just use of his property, and aids others by himself: (ISh, L:) one possessed of glory, honour, dignity, eminence, exalted or elevated state, or nobility; (L, Msb; [accord. to the latter of which, this is the primary signification;]) generous, noble, or high-born: (L:) the most generous, noble, or high-born, of a people: (Msb:) a liberal, bountiful, or munificent, person: (Fr, L:) clement; forbearing; one who endures injurious treatment from his people: (L:) devout, abstaining from unlawful things, and clement, or forbearing: (Katádeh, L:) one who is not overcome by his anger: ('Ikrimeh, L:) accord. to As, the Arabs say that it signifies any one who is subdued, or repressed, by his principle of clemency, or forbearance: (L:) and ↓ سَائِدٌ signifies the same as سَيِّدٌ: or one inferior to a سَيِّد: (K:) or, accord. to Fr, one says, هٰذَا سَيِّدُ قَوْمِهِ اليَوْمَ [this is the lord, &c., of his people today]; but if you announce that he will be their سيّد after a little while, you say هُوَ سَائِدُ قَوْمِهِ عَنْ قَلِيلٍ, and سَيِّدُ: (S:) the fem. of سَيِّدٌ [and of ↓ سَائِدٌ] is with ة: (M, L, Msb:) pl. of سَيِّدٌ, (S, Msb,) or of ↓ سَائِدٌ, (M, K,) سَادَةٌ (S, M, Msb, K) and سَيَائِدُ (S, K) and [pl. of سَادَةٌ] سَادَاتٌ: (Msb:) [J says that] سَادَةٌ is of the measure فَعَلَةٌ, [orinally سَوَدَةٌ,] because سَيِّدٌ is of the measure فَعِيلٌ; [as has been before mentioned;] and it is like سَرَاةٌ as pl. of سَرِىٌّ, the only other instance of the kind; this being shown to be the case by the fact that سَيِّدٌ has also as a pl. سَيَائِدُ, with ء, [and with the و changed into ى because it is so changed in the sing.,] like as أَفِيلٌ has أَفَائِلُ, and like as تَبِيعٌ has تَبَائِعُ; but the Basrees, who hold سَيِّدٌ to be of the measure فَيْعِلٌ, say that it becomes of the measure فَعَلَةٌ in the pl. as though it were سَائِدٌ, like قَائِدٌ, which has قَادَةٌ as a pl., and like ذَائِدٌ, which has ذَادَةٌ as a pl.; and they also say that سَيَائِدُ, with ء, as pl. of سَيِّدٌ, is contr. to analogy; for by rule it should be without ء. [Genii that were roused from their sleep by night, summoning, or perhaps bewailing and eulogizing their chief]: Akh says that this is a well-known verse of the poetry of the Arabs: but it is asserted by one, or more, likewise deserving of reliance, that it is of the poetry of El-Weleed [and therefore post-classical]. (TA.) b5: Also, (Ks, S, M, Mgh, Msb, K,) and ↓ سِيَّدٌ, (K,) the latter on the authority of Aboo-'Alee, (TA,) applied to a he-goat, (assumed tropical:) Advanced in years: (Ks, S, M; Mgh, Msb, K:) or in its third year: (Mgh:) or great, though not advanced in years: (TA:) or it is of general application, for it occurs in a trad. applied to the camel and the ox-kind. سُوَيْدٌ the abbreviated dim. of أَسْوَدُ: (S, Mgh, Msb:) see the latter. b2: Also [as a subst., or an epithet in which the quality of a subst. predominates,] Water; (M, Mgh, L;) as also ↓ أَسْوَدُ: (M: [but see الأَسْوَدَانِ, voce أَسْوَدُ:]) the former is [said to be] used in this sense in negative phrases only: (M, L:) one says, مَاسَقَاهُمْ مِنْ سُوَيْدٍ قَطْرَةً He gave them not to drink a drop of water. (M, Mgh, * L.) b3: أُمُّ سُوَيْدٍ means The anus; syn. الاِسْتُ; (K;) [and] so ↓ السُّوَيْدَآءُ. (M.) سَوَادَةُ القَلْبِ: see سَوَادٌ, near the beginning of the paragraph.

سُوَادِىٌّ [or perhaps سَوَادِىٌّ, i. e. “ belonging to the Sawád of El-'Irák,”] i. q. سِهْرِيزٌ (M) A wellknown sort of dates, (K voce سهريز,) found in abundance at El-Basrah. (TA ibid.) سَوَادِيَّةٌ: see سُودَانِيَّةٌ.

سُوَيْدَآءُ dim. of سُوْدَآءُ, fem. of أَسْوَدُ, q. v.: (Mgh:) b2: see also سَوَادٌ, in two places: b3: and سُوَيْدٌ: b4: and أَسْوَدُ, near the end of the paragraph. b5: Also A certain bird. أَسْوَدُ Greater, and greatest, in respect of estimation, rank, or dignity; syn. أَجَلُّ: (S, K:) and, as some say, more [and most] liberal or bountiful or munificent: or more [and most] clement or forbearing. (TA.) One says, هُوَ أَسْوَدُ مِنْ فُلَانٍ He is greater &c. (أَجَلُّ) than such a one. (S.) And الأَسْوَدُ مِنَ القَوْمِ means The greatest &c. (الأَجَلُّ) of the people, or party. (K, TA.) A2: Also Black; i. e. having سَوَاد, (M, * Mgh,) which is the contr. of بَيَاض: (M, Mgh:) and ↓ أَسْوَدِىٌّ signifies the same as أَسْوَدُ: (Ham p.

379:) [or has an intensive signification, like أَحْمَرىٌّ:] the fem. of أَسْوَدُ is سَوْدَآءُ: (Mgh, Msb:) the dim. of أَسْوَدُ is ↓ أُسَيِّدُ, (S, Msb,) and it is allowable to say ↓ أُسَيْوِدُ, [as is shown by an ex. voce أَسَكُّ,] meaning [a little black thing; or blackish, or] approaching to black; (S;) and the abbreviated dim. is ↓ سُوَيْدٌ: (S, Mgh, Msb:) the dim. of سَوْدَآءُ is ↓ سُوَيْدَآءُ: (Mgh:) the pl. of أَسْوَدُ (M, Msb) and of سَوْدَآءُ (Msb) is سُودٌ (M, Msb) and سُودَانٌ [which latter is especially applied to human beings]. (M.) السُّودَانُ is said in the R to denote [The negroes;] that particular people, or race, who are the most stinking of mankind in the armpits and sweat, and the more so those who are eunuchs. (TA.) [It (i. e. السودان) is also sometimes used for أَرْضُ السُّودَانِ, or بِلَادُ السُّودَانِ, (The land, or the country, of the negroes,) or the like: it is thus used in the TA voce سَمْغَرَةُ.] and the epithet أَسْوَدُ is also applied by the Arabs to a thing that is أَخْضَر [i. e. green]; because it appears to be thus at a distance. (Msb. أَسَاوِدُ (S, M) and أَسَاوِيدُ and ↓ أَسْوَدَاتٌ: (M:) were it an epithet [used as such], its pl. would be سُودٌ: it is also called أَسْوَدُ سَالِحٌ, because it casts off its slough every year: you do not say أَسْوَدُ سَالِخٍ: (S:) the female is called ↓ أَسْوَدَةٌ, (S, M,) which is extr.; (M;) and to this the epithet سَالِخَةٌ is not applied. (S.) b7: الأَسْوَدَانِ means (assumed tropical:) The serpent and the scorpion; (Sh, Mgh, Msb, K;) which are to be killed during prayer: (Sh, Mgh, Msb:) so called by the attribution of predominance [to the former]. (Sh, TA.) b8: and (tropical:) Dates and water; (El-Ahmar, As, S, M, A, Mgh, Msb, K;) both together being thus called by a term which properly applies to one only, [accord. to some,] for [they say that] الأَسْوَدُ alone signifies dates, not water, and especially, or mostly, the dates of El-Medeeneh; and in like manner, Aboo-Bekr and 'Omar together are called العُمَرَانِ; and the sun and the moon together, القَمَرَانِ: (TA:) or, as some say, it means water and milk; and is applied by a rájiz to water and the herb called الفَثّ, of [the grain of] which bread is made, and is eaten [in time of dearth or drought]. (M, L.) See also سُوَيْدٌ. b9: Also (assumed tropical:) The حَرَّة [or tract strewn with black and crumbling stones] and night: (S, M, L:) so called because of their blackness. (M, L.) A party came as guests to Muzebbid El-Medenee, and he said to them, “There is nothing for you with us but the أَسْوَدَانِ: ” and they replied, “Verily therein is a sufficiency: dates and water: ” but he said, “ I meant not that: I only meant the حَرَّة and the night. ” (S, M.) And as to the saying of 'Áïsheh, that she was with the Prophet when they had no food, but only the أَسْوَدَانِ, which is expl. by the lexicologists as meaning dates and water, [and thus by Mtr in the Mgh, ISd says,] in my opinion she only meant the حَرَّة and night. (As, S, and A in art. حمر.) b12: and رَمَى بِسَهْمِهِ الأَسْوَدِ (tropical:) He shot with his lucky arrow, (A, K,) that was smeared with blood, (A,) by means of which he looked for good fortune, (K, TA,) because he had shot with it and hit the object shot at, (TA,) or as though it were black (K, TA) with blood, (TA,) or by its having been much handled. (K, TA.) b13: and كَلَّمْتُهُ فَمَا رَدَّ عَلَىَّ سَوْدَآءَ وَلَا بَيْضَآءَ (tropical:) I spoke to him, and he did not return to me a bad word nor a good one: (S, L:) or a single word. (A.) b14: وَطْأَةٌ سَوْدَآءُ means (assumed tropical:) A footstep, or footprint, that is becoming effaced: a recent one is termed حَمْرَآءُ. A3: It is also used as an epithet denoting excess; but as such is anomalous, being formed from a verb whence the simple epithet is of the measure أَفْعَلُ: so in the saying, أَسْوَدُ مِنْ حَلَكِ الغُرَابِ [Blacker than the blackness, or intense blackness, of the crow, or raven: see حَلَكٌ]. مِسَادٌ, A skin for clarified butter, or for honey. (TA in this art. 1 عَيْنٌ [app. as inf. n. of عَانَ, agreeably with analogy, (like as أَذْنٌ is of أَذَنَ, and أَنْفٌ of أَنَفَ, &c.,) aor. ـِ signifies The hitting, or hurting, [another] in the eye. (K.) b2: And The smiting with the [evil] eye: (K:) which is said in a trad. to be a reality. (TA.) You say, عِنْتُ الرَّجُلَ I smote the man with my [evil] eye. (S.) and إِنَّكَ لَجَمِيلٌ وَلَا أَعِنْكَ, meaning [Verily thou art beautiful,] and may I not smite thee with the [evil] eye; and ولا أَعِينُكَ, meaning and I will not smite thee &c. (Lh, TA.) i. e. (assumed tropical:) [I came to such a one,] and he did not give me anything: (Lh, TA:) or, as some say, he did not direct me to anything. (TA.) And عَيَّنَ عَلَى السَّارِقِ (assumed tropical:) He distinguished, or singled out, the thief from among the suspected persons: or, as some say, he manifested against the thief his theft. (TA.) And عَيَّنْتُ النِّيَّةَ فِى الصَّوْمِ (assumed tropical:) I purposed the performance of a particular fast. (Msb.) b2: عيّن فُلَانًا He told such a one to his face of his vices, or faults, or the like. (I. h, S, K.) A3: عيّن الحَرْبَ بَيْنَنَا i. q. أَدَارَهَا [He, or it, stirred war, or conflict, or the war or conflicet, between us, or among us]: so in the K in the L, ادرها [perhaps for أَدَرَّهَا, but more probably, I think, for أَدَارَهَا]. (TA.) A4: عيّن الشَّجَرُ The trees became beautiful and bright, and blossomed. (K. TA.) A5: عيّن الرَّجُلُ The man took [or bought] بِالعِينَةِ i. e. السَّلَفِ [meaning for payment in advance, accord. to all the explanations that I find of السَّلَف as used in buying and selling; but accord to the TK, upon credit, i. e. for payment at a future period, agreeably with an explanation of (??_ in the A and (??) (??) thin by reason of oldness: (TA:) [or it became lacerated, or worn in holes; as is shown by what here follows.] One says also, تَعَيَّنَتْ أَخْفَافُ الأِبِلِ, meaning (assumed tropical:) The feet of the camels became lacerated [in the soles], or worn in holes, or blistered; like the water-skin of which one says تعيّن. (IAar, TA.) A6: تعيّن also signifies (assumed tropical:) It was, or became, clear, or distinct. (KL.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) It was or became, individuated, or particularized; i. e., distinguished from the generality, or aggregate. (KL,) [Thus signifying, it is quasi-pass. of عَيَّنَهُ. Hence it means (assumed tropical:) It had, or assumed, the quality of individuality. And (assumed tropical:) It was, or became, particularized. or specified, by words; mentioned particularly, or specially. And تعيّن لَهُ It was appointed, or prescribed, for him, or was assigned to him, particularly or peculiarly. And تعيّن عَلَيْهِ (assumed tropical:) It was appointed against him, upon him, particularly. And hence.] one says, تعيّن عَلَيْهِ الشَّئْ, meaning لَزِمَهُ بِعَيْنِهِ, [i. e. : The thing was, or became, incumbent, or obligatory, on him in particular] (S, K.

A2: اعتان الشَّئْ (assumed tropical:) He took the عَيْن of the thing, (S,) the (??) thereof. (S, TA.) [See also 8 in art. عون]) A3: And He bought the thing upon credit, for payment at a future (??) (S, Msb, (??) signifies he took (??) future time; (Mgh: [in which is expl. by the words أَخَذَ بِالعِينةِ, and in which عِينَة in a sale is expl. as meaning نَسِيْئَة;]) and so ↓ تعيّن; (KL;) [but Mtr says,] the saying تَعَيّنْ عَلَىّٰ حَرِيرًا as meaning اشْتَرِهْ بِبَيْعِ العِينَةِ I have not found. (Mgh,) [See also عيّن الرَّجُلُ expl. as meaning “ The man took بِالعينَةِ. ”]

عَيْنٌ is a homonym, applying to various things (Msb:) in the K. forty-seven (??) assigned to it; but it is said by MF that its meanings exceed a hundred; those occurring in the Kur-án are seventeen. (TA.,) By that which is app. its primary application, and which is by many affirmed to (??) (TA,) العَيْنُ signifies The eye: the organ of sight: (S, Mgh, Msb, K, TA [in the S expl. by حَاسَّةُ الرُّؤْيَةِ, evidently used in this sense; in the Mgh, by المُبْصِرَةُ; in the Msb and K, by البَاصِرَةُ; and in a mater place in the K. by حَاسَّةُ الرُّؤْيَة, app. as meaning the sense of sight;]) also denoted [emphatically] by the term الجَارِحَةُ [i. e. the organ]; (TA;) it is that with which the looker sees: (ISk, TA;) and is of a human being and of any other animal: (TA;) (??) is of the fem. gender; (S, K:) and the pl. [of mult.] as عُيُونٌ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) also pronounced عُيونٌ, (K, [in which وَتُكْسَرُ, immediately following عُيُونٌ, has been erroneously supposed by Golius and Freytag to relate to the sing.,]) and [of pause أَعْيَانٌ and أَعْيُنٌ, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) which last is asserted by Lh to be sometimes a pl. of mult., as it is in the Kur vii. [178 and] 194; (TA.) and pl. pl. أَعْيُنَاتٌ: (K:) the dim. is ↓ عُيَيْنَةٌ, (S.) Hence the saying in a trad. of 'Alee, قَاسَ عَيْنًا بِبَيْضَةٍ جَعَلَ عَلَيْهَا خُطُوطًا [He measured the reach of an eye by means of an egg upon which he made lines]. (Mgh.) And [hence also] one says, بِعَيْنٍ

مَّا أَرَيَنَّكَ [lit. With some eye I will assuredly see thee]: it is said to one whom you send, and require to be quick; and means (assumed tropical:) pause not for anything, for it is as though I were looking at thee. (TA. [See also art. رأى.]) And لَقِيتُهُ عَيْنَ عُنَّةٍ [I met him so that] I saw him with [or before] my eye, he not seeing me. (S, TA.) [And رَأَيْتُهُ عَيْنَ عُنَّةٍ or عُنَّةَ, which see in art. عن. And أَعْطَيْتُهُ عَيْنَ عُنَّةَ and عُنَّة, which also see in art. عن.] and رَأَيْتُهُ عَرْضَ عَيْنٍ I saw him, or it, obviously; nearly. (TA, voce عَرْضٌ, q. v.) And هَا هُوَ عَرْضُ عَيْنٍ [or عَرْضَ عَيْنٍ?] i. e. [Lo, he, or it, is] near [before thee]: and in like manner, هُوَ مِنِّى عَيْنُ عُنَّةٍ [or عَيْنَ عُنَّةٍ? i. e. He is near before me]. (K.) and لَقِيتُهُ أَوَّلَ عَيْنٍ, (S, K,) and أَوَّلَ ذِى عَيْنٍ and ↓ عَائِنَةٍ, (TA,) I met him, or it, the first thing: (S, K, TA:) and before every [other] thing; as also ↓ أَوَّلَ عَائِنَةٍ and أَدْنَى عَائِنَةٍ: (S:) or this last means the nearest thing perceived by the eye. (TA.) And فَعَلْتُ ذَاكَ عَمْدَ عَيْنٍ and عَمْدًا عَلَى

عَيْنٍ (assumed tropical:) I did that purposely, with seriousness, or earnestness, and certainty: (S:) or صَنَعَ ذٰلِكَ عَلَى

عَيْنٍ and عَلَى عَيْنَيْنِ, (K, TA,) and عَمْدَ عَيْنٍ and عَمْدَ عَيْنَيْنِ, (K,) or عَلَى عَمْدِ عَيْنٍ and عَلَى عَمْدِ عَيْنَيْنِ, (TA,) (assumed tropical:) He did that purposely, (Lh, K, TA,) with seriousness, or earnestness, and certainty. (K.) And هُوَ عَبْدُ عَيْنٍ (tropical:) He is like the slave to thee as long as thou seest him, (S, K, * TA,) but not when thou art absent; and so هُوَ عَبْدُ العَيْنِ: (S:) or he is a man who pretends, or feigns, to thee, his doing that which he does not perform: (TA:) and (K, TA) in this sense, (TA,) one says also, هُوَ صَدِيقُ عَيْنٍ i. e. (assumed tropical:) [He is a friend, or a true friend,] as long as thou seest him: (K, TA:) and هُوَ أَخُو عَيْنٍ (assumed tropical:) He is one who acts as a friend hypocritically with thee. (TA.) أَنْتَ عَلَى عَيْنِى is said in relation to honouring and protecting: (S, K, TA:) [accordingly I would render it (tropical:) Thou art entitled to be honoured and protected by me above my eye: for the eye is esteemed the most excellent of the organs, (as is said in this art. in the TA,) and it is that which most needs protection:] أَنْتَ عَلَى رَأْسِى is said in relation to honouring only. (TA.) And the Arabs say, عَلَى

عَيْنِى قَصَدْتُ زَيْدًا, meaning thereby the regarding with solicitude mixed with fear [so that I would render it (assumed tropical:) As one to be regarded with solicitude mixed with fear above my eye I made Zeyd the object to which my mind was directed]. (TA.) [See another ex. of عَلَى عَيْنِى (in which it cannot be rendered as above) in a later part of this paragraph.] نَعِمَ اللّٰهُ بِكَ عَيْنًا [in the CK نَعَّمَ, which is wrong,] means the same as أَنْعَمَهَا. (K. [See both in art. نعم.]) قُرَّةُ العَيْنِ [signifying مَا قَرَّتْ بِهِ العَيْنُ, as expl. in the M and K in art. قر, i. e. That by which, or in consequence of which, the eye becomes cool, or refrigerated, or refreshed, &c.,] is a phrase used as meaning (assumed tropical:) A man's child or offspring. (TA.) فَقَأَ عَيْنَهُ [properly signifying He put out his eye, or blinded it, &c.,] means [sometimes] (tropical:) he struck him; or struck him vehemently with a broad thing, or with anything; or slapped him with his hand: (صَكَّهُ:) or he was rough, rude, or ungentle, to him in speech. (TA.) اَلَّذِى فِيهِ عَيْنَاكَ means Thy head. (TA. [There mentioned preceded by لاتحرمَن: thus dubiously, and perhaps incorrectly, written. What is means, or should be, I know not.]) b2: عَيْنُ الثَّوْرِ (assumed tropical:) (The eye of the Bull;] the great red star [a] that is upon the southern eye of Taurus, and also [more commonly] called الدَّبَرَانُ. (Kzw, Descr. of Taurus.) [and عَيْنُ الرَّامِى (assumed tropical:) The eye of Sagittarius; app. the two stars v, on the eye thereof.] b3: عَيْنُ البَقَرِ (assumed tropical:) [The buphthalmum, or ox-eye;] the [plant called] بَهَار [q. v.]. (S in art. بهر.) And عُيُونُ البَقَرِ (tropical:) A sort of grapes, (S, K, TA,) black, (K, TA,) but not intensely so, large in the berries, (TA,) and round, (K, TA,) which are converted into raisins, and are not very sweet: so says AHn: thus called as being likened to the eyes of the animals termed بَقَر: (TA:) they are found in Syria: (S:) or said by some to be peculiar to Syria. (TA.) and Certain black إِجَّاص [or plums]: (K, TA:) thus called for the same reason. (TA.) b4: عَيْنُ الهِرِّ (assumed tropical:) [Cat's-eye;] a certain stone, well known, of no utility. (TA.) A2: [فَتَحَ هَيْنَ النَّارِ means (assumed tropical:) He made an opening in the live coals of the fire, that had become compacted; in order that it might burn up well. (See 1 in art. سخو and سخى.)] b2: and عَيْنٌ signifies also (assumed tropical:) The عَيْن [i. e. eye] of the needle: such as is narrow is termed عَيْنُ صَفِيَّة [in which the latter word is app. a proper name, and, as such and of the fem. gender, imperfectly decl., i. e., in this case, written صَفِيَّةَ]. (TA.) b3: Also, as being likened to the organ [of sight] in form, or appearance, (tropical:) A [small round hole or] place of perforation in a [leathern water-bag such as is called] مَزَادَة. (TA.) And (tropical:) Thin circles, or rings, or round places, in a skin, (S, K, TA,) which are a fault therein, (S, TA,) like أَعْيُن [or eyes; or one of such thin circles &c.]; being likened to the organ [of sight] in form. (TA.) [See 10.] And (K) (tropical:) A fault, or defect, (K, TA,) of this description, in a skin. (TA.) b4: And (tropical:) The small hollow or cavity of the knee; (S, K; in [some of] the copies of the latter of which, الرَّكِيَّة is erroneously put for الرُّكْبَة; TA;) likened to the socket of the eye: (TA:) each knee has عَيْنَانِ [i. e. two small hollows or cavities, the articular depressions for the condyles of the femur], in the fore part thereof, at [the joint of] the سَاق. (S, TA.) b5: And (tropical:) The piece of skin [or small leathern receptacle] in which are put the بُنْدُق [or bullets] (K, TA) that are shot from the قَوْس [app. meaning the large kind of cross-bow, called balista, or ballista]: (K, * TA:) likened to the organ [of sight] in form. (TA.) b6: [In the B, accord. to the TA, it is also expl. as meaning the سنام: but this, I think, is most probably a mistranscription for سَام (q. v.) as signifying (assumed tropical:) The hollow, or cavity, in the ground, thus called, in which water remains, or stagnates, and collects.] And (tropical:) The place [or aperture] whence the water of a قَنَاة [i. e. pipe, or the like,] pours forth: (K, TA:) as being likened to the organ [of sight] because of the water that is in it. (TA.) And, (K, TA,) for the same reason, (TA,) (tropical:) The place whence issues the water of a well. (TA.) And, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) for the same reason, as is said by Er-Rághib, (TA,) (tropical:) The عَيْن, (S, Msb,) or source, or spring, (K, TA,) of water, (S, Msb, K, TA,) that wells forth from the earth, or ground, and runs: (TA:) [and accord. to the Msb, it app. signifies a running spring:] of the fem. gender: (TA:) pl. عُيُونٌ and أَعْيُنٌ, (Msb, K,) and accord. to ISk, sometimes the Arabs said, as a pl. thereof, أَعْيَانٌ, but this is rare. (Msb.) Hence a saying, in a trad., cited and expl. voce سَاهِرٌ. (TA.) Also (assumed tropical:) Abundance of water of a well. (TA.) And A drop of water. (TA.) عَيْنُ المَآءِ, [originally signifying “ the source of water,”] accord. to Th, means (assumed tropical:) Life for men; thus in the following verse: أُولَائِكَ عَيْنُ المَآءِ فِيهِمْ وَعِنْدَهُمْ مِنَ الخِيفَةِ المَنْجَاةُ وَالمُتَحَوَّلُ (assumed tropical:) [Those, life for men is among them; and with them are the means of safety, and the place of removal, from fear]: accord. to the A, عَيْنُ المَآءِ فِيهِمْ means good, or means of attaining good, and provision of corn, or abundance of the produce of the earth, are among them. (TA.) b7: Also (assumed tropical:) The عَيْن [meaning eye, or bud, (thus called in the present day,)] of a tree. (Es-Subkee, TA.) b8: [and (tropical:) Sprouting herbage; as being likened to the eye or eyes:] one says, نَظَرَتِ البِلَادُ بِعَيْنٍ or بِعَيْنَيْنِ [lit. (tropical:) The lands looked with an eye or with two eyes], meaning, had their herbage come forth: (K:) or it is said when their herbage comes forth: or, as in the A, when that which cattle depasture comes forth without [as yet] becoming firm [in the ground, or firmly rooted]: taken from the saying of the Arabs, إِذَا سَقَطَتِ الجَبْهَةُ نَظَرَتِ الأَرْضُ بِإِحْدَى عَيْنَيْهَا فَإِذَا سَقَطَتِ الصَّرْفَةُ نَظَرَتْ بِهِمَا جَمِيعًا (assumed tropical:) [lit. When El-Jebheh (the 10th Mansion of the Moon) sets aurorally (i. e. about the 11th of Feb., O. S.), the land looks with one of its eyes; the, when Es-Sarfeh (the 12th Mansion) sets aurorally (about the 9th of March), it looks with both of them]. (TA. [See also art. نظر.]) A3: عَيْنٌ also, (S, Msb, K, &c.,) as being likened to the organ of sight, (TA,) signifies (tropical:) A spy; and ↓ ذُو العُيَيْنَتَيْنِ [in the CK ذُو العَيْنَتَيْنِ], in like manner, signifies the spy, (S, K, TA,) and ↓ ذُو العُوَيْنَتَيْنِ likewise, and ذُو العَيْنَيْنِ: (TA:) he who looks for a people, or party: (M, TA:) the watcher, or observer; (S, * K, * TA;) or the scout: (S, * Msb, K, * TA:) masc. and fem.: (M, TA:) accord. to the opinion of ISd, made by some to accord with a part [i. e. the eye], and therefore fem.; and by some, to accord with the whole [person], and therefore masc.: (TA:) pl. عُيُونٌ and أَعْيُنٌ, and, accord. to ISk, sometimes أَعْيَانٌ. (Msb.) b2: And i. q. مُكَاشِفٌ [app. as meaning (assumed tropical:) A discoverer, or revealer, of tidings &c.]. (Es-Subkee, TA.) A4: [And (assumed tropical:) An eye as meaning a look, i. e. an act of looking: and hence, a stroke of an evil eye: or, simply, an evil eye: a meaning of frequent occurrence.] أَصَابَتْ فُلَانًا عَيْنٌ (assumed tropical:) [An evil eye smote such a one] is said of a person when an enemy or an envier has looked at him and produced such an effect upon him that he has fallen sick in consequence thereof (TA.) [عَيْنُ الكَمَالِ is applied to an eye believed to have the power of killing by its glance: see an ex. voce فَقَأَ.] b2: And (assumed tropical:) Sight with the eye [or before the eyes; or ocular view]: thus in the saying, لَا أَطْلُبُ أَثَرًا بَعْدَ عَيْنٍ (assumed tropical:) [I will not seek a trace, or vestige, (or, as we rather say in English, a shadow,) after an ocular view]: (S, TA:) or the meaning is, after suffering a reality, or substance, to escape me: (Har pp. 120 and 174: [this latter rendering being agreeable with explanations of عَيْنٌ which will be found in a later part of this paragraph:]) i. e. I will not leave the thing when I see it ocularly, and seek the trace or vestige, thereof, after its [the thing's] disappearing from me: and the origin of it was the fact that a man saw the slayer of his brother, and when he desired to slay him, he [the latter] said, “ I will ransom myself with a hundred she-camels; ” whereupon he [the other] said, لَسْتُ

أَطْلُبُ أَثَرًا بَعْدَ عَيْنٍ; and slew him: (TA:) it is a prov., thus, or, as some relate it, لَا تَطْلُبْ. (Har p. 120.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) Look, or view. (K, TA.) It is said in the Kur [xx. 40], وَالتُصْنَعَ عَلَى عَيْنِى, (S, TA,) and it has been expl. as there having this meaning [i. e. (assumed tropical:) And this I did that thou mightest be reared and nourished in my view], as in the B; or, as Th says, that thou mightest be reared where I should see thee: (TA:) or the meaning is, (assumed tropical:) in my watch, or guard, (Bd, * Jel,) and my keeping, or protection. (Jel. [It is implied by the context in the S, that عَلَى عَيْنِى is said in this instance in relation to honouring and protecting, as it is in a phrase mentioned in the first quarter of this paragraph; but my rendering of it there is obviously inapplicable here. See also 1 in art. صنع.]) And in like manner it has been expl. as used in the Kur [xi. 39], وَاصْنَعِ الْفُلْكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا (assumed tropical:) [And make thou the ark in our view]. (TA.) [In like manner, also,] فَأْتُوا بِهِ عَلَى أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ, in the Kur [xxi. 62], means عَلَى مَنْظَرِهِمْ (assumed tropical:) [i. e. Then bring ye him in the view of the people; منظر being here evidently an inf. n.]; (B, TA:) or [bring ye him] openly, or conspicuously. (Jel.) A5: And (assumed tropical:) The مَنْظَر [as meaning aspect, or outward appearance], (S, K,) and شَاهِد [meaning the same as being an evidence of the intrinsic qualities], (S,) of a man. (S, K.) So in the saying of El-Hajjáj to El-Hasan [ElBasree, when he (the former) had asked مَا أَمَدُكَ

“ What was the time of thy birth? ” and the latter had answered (see أَمَدٌ)], لَعَيْنُكَ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ أَمَدِكَ (assumed tropical:) [Verily thy aspect is greater than thy age], أَمَدِكَ meaning سِنِّكَ. (S.) And it is said in a prov., إِنَّ الجَوَادَ عَيْنُهُ فُرَارُهُ (assumed tropical:) [Verily the fleet and excellent horse, his aspect is (equivalent to) the examination of his teeth]: (S, TA: [accord. to the latter, عَيْنُهُ meaning شَاهِدُهُ:]) i. e. his external appearance renders it needless for thee to try him and to examine his teeth. (S and K in art. فر, q. v.) A6: Also, [by a synecdoche, as when it means “ a spy,”] (assumed tropical:) A human being: (K:) and any one: (S, K:) [in which sense, as when it means “ a spy,” it may be masc. or fem.:] and human beings: (S:) or a company [of people]; (K;) as also ↓ عَيَنٌ: (S, K:) and the people of a house or dwelling: (K:) and so ↓ عَيَنٌ; (S, K;) and the people of a town or country; as also ↓ عَيَنٌ. (K.) One says, مَا بِهَا عَيْنٌ (assumed tropical:) There is not in it any one; (S, K, TA;) [i. e. بِالدَّارِ in the house, or dwelling;] as also ↓ عَيَنٌ, (TA,) and ↓ عَائِنٌ, (S, TA,) and ↓ عَائِنَةٌ: (TA:) and مَا بِهَا عَيْنٌ تَطْرِفُ [virtually meaning the same, but fit. There is not in it an eye twinkling]. (TA.) And ↓ مَا رَأَيْتُ ثَمَّ عَائِنَةً i. e. (assumed tropical:) [I was not there] a human being. (TA.) And بَلَدٌ قَلِيلُ العَيْنِ (assumed tropical:) [A town, or country,] having few human beings, (S.) or few people. (TA.) A7: and (assumed tropical:) A lord, chief, or chief personage: (K, TA:) in [some of] the copies of the K, السدّ or الشدّ is erroneously put for السَّيِّدُ: (TA:) the great, or great and noble, person of a people or party: (K, TA:) and the head, chief, or commander, of an army: (TA:) the pl. is أَعْيَانٌ: (TA:) which signifies [lords, chiefs, or chief personages: &c.: and] the eminent, or high-born, or noble, individuals (S, Mgh, Msb, TA) of a people, or party, (S, Mgh,) or of men; (Msb;) and the most excellent persons. (TA.) b2: Hence, (Mgh, Msb,) as pl. of عَيْنٌ, (K,) أَعْيَانٌ signifies also ا Brothers from the same father and mother: (S, Mgh, Msb, K:) this brotherhood is termed ↓ مُعَايَنَةٌ: (S, K:) and أَوْلَادُ الأَعْيَانِ means the sons of the same father and mother. (Msb in art. عل. [See عَلَّةٌ.]) b3: Also. the sing., (assumed tropical:) The choice, or best, (S, Mgh, Msb, K,) of a thing, (S, K,) or of goods, or household-goods, or furniture and utensils, (Mgh, Msb, TA,) and of camels, or cattle, or other property, (TA,) and so ↓ عِينَةٌ, (S, K, TA,) of which the pl. is عِيَنٌ, (TA,) like عِيمَةٌ: (S:) ↓ عِينَةُ الخَيْلِ signifies (assumed tropical:) the fleet and excellent of horses. (Lh, TA.) And (assumed tropical:) Highly prized, in much request, or excellent. (TA.) And, as applied to a deenár, (assumed tropical:) Outweighing, so that the balance inclines with it. (TA.) b4: And (assumed tropical:) i. q. مَالٌ, (K, TA,) [i. e. Property, or such as consists of camels or cattle,] when of a choice. or of the best, sort. (TA.) A8: and (assumed tropical:) Such as is ready, or at hand, (K, TA,) present, (TA,) or within one's power, or reach, (S, TA,) of property. (S, K, TA.) And (assumed tropical:) Anything present, or ready, (K, TA,) found before one. (TA.) You say, بِعْتُهُ عَيْنًا بِعَيْنٍ (assumed tropical:) I sold it ready merchandise for ready money. (Msb.) b2: [Hence,] (assumed tropical:) Ready money; cash: or simply money: syn. نَقْدٌ: (T, Mgh, Msb, TA:) not عَرْضٌ [q. v.]: (Mgh:) and sometimes, دَرَاهِمُ. (Msb.) So in the saying عَيْنٌ غَيْرُ دَيْنِ (assumed tropical:) [Ready money, not debt]. (TA.) And [hence also] one says, اِشْتَرَيْتَ بِالدَّيْنِ أَوْ بِالعَيْنِ (assumed tropical:) [Didst thou buy on credit or with ready money?]. (Msb.) b3: And ا A present gift. (Mgh, TA.) So in the saying (Mgh, TA) of a rájiz (TA) satirizing a man, (Mgh,) وَعَيْنُهُ كَالكَالِئِ الضِّمَارِ [And his present gift is a thing not hoped for, like the unseen debt of which the payment is deferred by the creditor:] meaning, his present gift is like the absent that is not hoped for. (Mgh, TA.) [And hence, app.,] أَصَابَتْهُ عَيْنٌ مِنْ عُيُونِ اللّٰهِ, occurring in a trad., means, خَاصَّةٌ مِنْ خَوَاصِّ اللّٰهِ [i. e. (assumed tropical:) A particular, or special, gift of God betided him]. (TA.) b4: Also (assumed tropical:) A deenár: (S, K:) or deenárs; (Az, TA;) [i. e.] coined gold; (Mgh, Msb; *) different from وَرِقٌ [which signifies “ coined silver or “ dirhems ”]. (Mgh.) They said, عَلَيْهِ مِائَةٌ عَيْنًا (assumed tropical:) [On him is incumbent the payment of a hundred deenars]: but properly one should say عَيْنٌ, because it is identical with what precedes it (Sb, TA.) b5: And The half of a dánik [app. deducted] from seven deenars: (K, TA:) mentioned by Az. (TA.) b6: And (tropical:) Gold, (K, TA,) in a general sense; as being likened to the organ [of sight], in that the former is the most excellent of the metals, like as the latter is the most excellence of the organs. (TA.) A9: And (tropical:) The sun itself; (A, K, TA;) as being likened to the organ [of sight], because the former is the most noble of the stars, like as the latter is the most noble of the organs. (TA:) or (K, TA) the عَيْن of the sun; (S, Msb, TA;) i. e. the شُعَاع thereof; (K, TA,) [meaning its rays, or beams,] upon which the eye will act remain fixed: (TA:) or [more commonly] the عَيْن means the قُرْص [q. v., that is disk] of the sun. (KL.) [Using it in the first of these senses.] one says, طَلَعَتِ العَيْنُ (tropical:) [The sun rose], and غَابَتِ العَيْنُ [The sun set]. (Lh, TA.) A10: And (assumed tropical:) A thing's نَفْس [i. e. its self]; (S, Mgh, Msb, K, TA;) and its ذَات [which means the same]; (K, TA:) and its شَخْص, which means nearly, or rather exactly, the same as its ذات; (TA;) [and likewise a man's person, as does also ↓ عِيَانٌ, (see exs. in Har pp. 20 and 45,) and the material substance of a thing;] and its أَصْل [as meaning its essence, or constituent substance]: (TA:) pl. أَعْيَانٌ, (Mgh, Msb, TA,) not أَعْيُنٌ nor عُيُونٌ. (Mgh, TA.) One says, هُوَ هُوَ عَيْنًا and هُوَ هُوَ بِعَيْنِهِ (assumed tropical:) (It is it itself, or he is he himself]: (S, TA:) بِ when prefixed to عَيْن, [thus] used as a corroborative, being redundant. (Mughnee in art. بِ.) and لَا آخُذُ إِلَّا دِرْهَمِى بِعَيْنِهِ (assumed tropical:) [I will not take aught save my dirhem itself]. (S.) And أَخَذْتُ مَالِى

بِعَيْنِهِ (assumed tropical:) I took my property itself. (Msb.) and هذِهِ أَعْيَانُ دَرَاهِمِكَ (Lh, TA) and دَرَاهِمُكَ بِأَعْيَانِهَا (Lh, Mgh, * Msb, TA) (assumed tropical:) These are thy dirhems themselves]. And هُمْ إِخْوَتُكَ بِأَعْيَانِهِمْ (assumed tropical:) [They are thy brothers themselves]. (Msb.) And عَيْنُ الرِّبَا occurs in a trad. as meaning (assumed tropical:) Usury itself. (TA.) [مَوْضِعٌ بِعَيْنِهِ, a phrase very frequently occurring in the L and TA &c., means (assumed tropical:) A certain, or particular, place: and in a similar manner بِعَيْنِهِ is used after the mention of a plant &c.] One says also جَآءَ بِالأَمْرِ مِنْ عَيْنٍ صَافِيَةٍ i. e. (assumed tropical:) [He brought forth, brought to light, or declared, the affair] from its very essence. (TA.) And بِالحَقِّ بِعَيْنِهِ means (assumed tropical:) With truth, clearly and manifestly. (TA.) [In grammar, اِسْمُ عَيْنٍ means (assumed tropical:) A real substantive; the name of a real thing; also termed اِسْمُ ذَاتٍ; and sometimes termed عَيْنٌ alone: opposed to اِسْمُ مَعْنًى i. e. an ideal substantive.]

A11: عَيْنٌ ثَاقِبَةٌ means (assumed tropical:) Certain, or sure, news or information. (A and TA in art. ثقب.) A12: And العَيْنُ [sometimes] signifies (assumed tropical:) Knowledge; [or rather sure, or certain, and manifest, knowledge;] which is also termed عَيْنُ اليَقِينِ. (TA.) A13: And (assumed tropical:) Might (العِزُّ). (TA.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) Health and safety (العَافِيَةُ). (TA.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) Thirst; and so الغَيْنُ. (TA in art. غين.) A14: And (assumed tropical:) The صُورَة [which generally means form, or the like: but it has many other significations; one of which is essence, before mentioned as a meaning of عَيْنٌ]. (TA.) A15: And it signifies also النَّاحِيَةٌ [app. as meaning (assumed tropical:) The part, or point, towards which one directs himself]: (K, TA:) or, accord. to some, particularly that of the قِبْلَة [i. e. that towards which one directs his face in prayer]: (TA:) [or] it signifies also the true direction of the قِبْلَة: (K, TA:) or the part that is on the right of the قِبْلَة of El-'Irák: [whence] one says, نَشَأَتِ السَّحَابَةُ مِنْ قِبَلِ العَيْنِ (assumed tropical:) [The cloud rose from the part on the right of the قبلة of El-'Irák]: (S: [see also خَسْفٌ:]) or this means, from the direction of the قبلة of El-'Irak; and the Arabs say that this scarcely ever, or never, breaks its promise [of giving rain]: when it rises from the direction of the sea, and then goes northward, one says عَيْنٌ غُدَيْقَةٌ; and this is usually most disposed to rain: (TA:) غُدَيْقَة is a dim. of magnification, meaning abounding with water. (TA in art. غدق.) Also (assumed tropical:) The clouds (سَحَاب) that have come from the direction of the قِبْلَة: (K, * TA:) or, from the direction of the قبلة of El-'Irák: or, from the right thereof: (K, TA:) and it is said in the B to signify [simply] السَّحَابُ [the clouds]; (TA;) and so الغَيْنُ. (TA in art. غين.) And, accord. to Th, مَطَرُ العَيْنِ signifies (assumed tropical:) The rain that is from the direction of the قِبْلَة: or, from the direction of the قبلة of El-'Irák: or, from the right thereof. (TA.) The saying of the Arabs مُطِرْنَا بِالعَيْنِ (assumed tropical:) [We were, or have been, rained upon by the عين] is allowed by some, but disapproved by others. (TA.) b2: And [hence, app.,] (assumed tropical:) The rain that continues during some days, (S, K, TA,) some say five, and some say six, or more, (TA,) without clearing away. (S, K, TA.) A16: عَيْنٌ signifies also (assumed tropical:) Usury; syn. رِبًا; (K, TA; [see also عَيْنُ الرِّبَا above;]) and so ↓ عِينَةٌ. (TA.) And (assumed tropical:) An inclining in the balance; (Kh, Mgh, K, TA;) said to be the case in which one of the two scales thereof outweighs the other: (TA:) one says, فِى المِيزَانِ عَيْنٌ, meaning (assumed tropical:) In the balance is an unevenness; (S, TA;) a little inclining in the tongue thereof: and the word is fem. (TA.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) The tongue [or cock, itself,] of the balance. (TA.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) A scale of a balance; i. e. either of the two scales thereof. (TA.) Also (assumed tropical:) A small بَيْت [meaning partition, or part divided from the rest,] in a chest. (TA.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) A مِحَشَّة [app. meaning a thing in which حَشِيش, or dry herbage, is put]. (TA.) b3: [And (assumed tropical:) Either half, or one side, of a خُرْج, or pair of saddle-bags.] And A certain bird, (K, TA,) yellow in the belly, أَخْضَر [generally in a case of this kind meaning of a dingy, or dark, ash-colour or dust-colour] in the back; of the size of the [species of collared turtle-dove called]

قُمْرِىّ. (TA.) Also (assumed tropical:) [The letter ع;] one of the letters of the alphabet, (S, K,) of those termed حَلْقِيَّة and مَهْجُورَة. (K. [See art. ع.]) b2: and (assumed tropical:) The middle [radical letter] of a word [of the triliteral-radical class; the root of such a word being represented by فعل]. (TA.) b3: In the calculation by means of the letters ا, ب, ج, د, &c., it denotes Seventy. (TA.) عِينٌ, originally عُيْنٌ, pl. of أَعْيَنُ [q. v.]: (S, K: *) A2: and also, (as a contraction of عُيُنٌ, IB, TA,) pl. of عِيَانٌ: (AA, S, IB:) [and of عَيُونٌ.]

عَيَنٌ The quality denoted by the epithet أَعْيَنُ [q. v.; i. e. width in the eye; &c.]; (S;) and so ↓ عِينَةٌ. (Lh, TA.) [See also 1, last sentence; where both are mentioned as inf. ns.]

He sold it upon credit, for payment at a future time]: (A, Mgh: [see 8:]) or, as some say, [and more commonly,] العِينَةُ is the buying what one has sold for less than that for which one has sold it: and ↓ العَيَنُ signifies the same: (Mgh:) or, accord. to Az, the selling a commodity for a certain price to be paid at a certain period, and then buying it for less than that price with ready money: [see 2, last quarter:] this is unlawful when the buyer makes it a condition with the seller that he shall buy it for a certain price; but when there is no condition between them, it is allowable accord. to Esh-Sháfi'ee, though forbidden by some others; and he used to call it the sister of usury: and the sale of a commodity by the purchaser [thereof upon credit] to other than the seller of it, on the spot (lit. in the sitting-place), is also termed عِينَةٌ; but is lawful by common consent: (Msb:) or it is the case of a man's coming to another man to ask of him a loan, which the latter does not desire to grant, coveting profit, which is not to be obtained by a loan, wherefore he says, “I will sell to thee this garment for twelve dirhems upon credit, for payment at a certain time, and its value is ten [which thou mayest obtain by selling it for ready money]. ” (KT: in some copies of which the word thus expl. is [erroneously] written العَيْنِيَّةُ instead of العِينَةُ.) [See also زَرْنَقَةٌ. The word is generally held to be derived from عَيْنٌ as signifying “ ready money ” or “ ready merchandise. ”] b6: Also The مَادَّة [meaning accession to the strength or forces] of war: (K, * TA:) used in this sense in a verse of Ibn-Mukbil [in which it is shown to be so used as being likened to the accession, to the quantity of milk, which has collected and become added to that previously left in the udder: see مَادَّةٌ]. (TA.) لَقِيَهُ عِيَنَةً: see 3.

عَيْنُونٌ A certain plant, found in El-Andalus, that attenuates the humours of the body, when cooked with figs. (TA.) عِيَانٌ an inf. n. of 3. (S, Msb.) b2: [And Clear, evident, manifest, open, or public: thus, by the Pers\. word اَشْكَارْ, the KL explains عيان, which, in my copy of that work, is written عَيَان, evidently, I think, a mistranscription for عِيَان, an inf. n. of 3, used in the sense of a pass. part. n., agreeably with a well-known license, lit. meaning ocularly seen: see ضِمَارٌ, under which I have rendered its contrary by “ unseen; not apparent. ”] b3: See also عَيْنٌ, latter half.

A2: Also A certain iron thing among the appertenances of the فَدَّان, (S, K,) or فَدَان [i. e. plough], this word (فدان) written in the copies of the S, [as in the K,] with teshdeed to the د, but, as IB says, it is without teshdeed when signifying the implement with which ploughing is performed: accord. to AA, the لُؤْمَة, i. e. the سِنَّة [or share] with which the earth is ploughed up, is called the عِيَان when it is upon the فَدَان [or plough]: or, accord. to the M, the عِيَان is a ring at the extremity of the لُؤْمَة and the سليب. [app. a mistranscription] and the دُجْرَانِ [two pieces of wood upon which the share is bound]: (TA:) pl. [of pauc.] أَعْيِنَةٌ and [of mult.] عُيُنٌ, with two dammehs; (K;) or عِينٌ, originally of the measure فُعْلٌ [i. e. عُيْنٌ]; (S;) accord. to AA, عِينٌ, with kesr only; accord. to IB, عُيُنٌ, with two dammehs, and, when the ى is made quiescent, عِينٌ, not عُيْنٌ. (TA).

A3: اِبْنَا عِيَانٍ means Two birds, (K, TA,) from the flight, or alighting-places, or cries, &c., of which, the Arabs augur: (TA:) or two lines which are marked upon the ground (S, K) by the عَائِف [or augurer], by means of which one augurs, from the flight, &c., of birds; (S;) or which are made for the purpose of auguring; (TA;) then the augurer says, اِبْنَىْ عِيَانْ أَسْرِعَا البَيَانْ [O two sons of 'Iyán, hasten ye the manifestations] (K, * TA: [see 1 in art. خط:]) in the copies of the K, اِبْنَا is here erroneously put for اِبْنَى or, as some say اِبْنَا عِيانٍ means two well-known diviningarrows: (TA:) and when it is known that the gaming arrow of him who plays therewith wins, one says, جَرَى ابْنَا عِيَانٍ [app. meaning The two sons of 'Iyán have hastened. i. e. the two arrows so termed: as seems to be indicated by (??) cited in the L (in which it is followed by the words بِالشِّوَآءِ المُضَهَّبِ with the roast meat (??) thoroughly cooked), and also by what here fel-lows]: (S, L, K. TA:) these [arrows] being called اِبْنَ عِيَانٍ because by means of them the people [playing at the game called المَيْسِر see the winning and the food [i. e. the hastily cooked flesh of the slaughtered camel]. (L, TA.) رَجُلٌ عَيُونٌ (K, TA) and ↓ عَيَّانٌ (TA) A man who smites vehemently with the [evil] eye; as also ↓ مِعْيَانٌ: (K, TA,) pl. [of the first] عينٌ and عُيُنٌ. (K.) عُيَيْنَةٌ: and ذُو العُيَيْنَتَيْنِ and ذُو العُوَيْنَتَيْنِ: see عَيْنٌ, in the former half of the paragraph.

عَيَّنٌ: see the next paragraph, in two places.

رَجُلٌ عَيِّنٌ A man quick to weep. (TA.) b2: And سِقَآءٌ عَيِّنٌ, (S, K,) and ↓ عَيَّنٌ, (K,) the latter less common, and said to be the only instance of an epithet of the measure فَيْعَلٌ with an infirm [medial] radical, or it may be of the measure فَوْعَلٌ or فَوْعَلٌ, and in either of these two cases not without a parallel, (TA,) and ↓ مُتَعَيِّنٌ, (S, K,) (assumed tropical:) A skin, for water, or for milk, having thin circles, or rings, or round places, [likened to eyes,] rendering it faulty: (S:) or of which the water runs forth: (Lh, K:) or new; (K;) or thus عَيِّنٌ and ↓ عَيَّنٌ, in the dial. of Teiyi; and so قِرْبَةٌ عَيِّنٌ in that dial.: the pl. of عيّن applied to a skin is عَيَائِنُ, with hemzeh because the place thereof is near to the end. (TA.) عَيَّانٌ: see عَيُونٌ.

عَائِنٌ Smiting with the [evil] eye. (S, TA.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) Flowing water: (S:) or so مَآءٌ عَائِنٌ; from عَيْنُ المَآءِ. (TA.) b3: See also عَيْنٌ, third quarter.

عَائِنَةٌ: see عَيْنٌ, first quarter, in two places: b2: and again, third quarter, in two places. b3: One says also, رَأَيْتُ عَائِنَةً مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ, meaning I saw a party of his companions who saw me. (TA.) b4: And رَأَيْتُهُ بِعَائِنَةِ العِدَا I saw him where the eyes of the enemy were seeing him. (TA.) b5: And عَائِنَةُ بَنِى فُلَانٍ The herds, or flocks, or herds and flocks, (أَمْوَال,) and pastors, of the sons of such a one. (S.) أَعْيَنُ A man wide in the eye: (S, Mgh:) or large and wide therein. (Lh, TA:) or large in the black of the eye, with width [of the eye itself]: (K.) fem. عَيْنَآءُ; (S:) when is applied to a woman as meaning beautiful and wide in the eyes (Msb:) pl. عِينٌ, (S, Msb,) originally عُيْنٌ (S.) b2: Hence. (S,) عينٌ is an appellation of Wild oxen; (S, K, TA:) as an epithet in which the quality of a subst. predominates: (TA:) and أَعْيَنُ, of the wild bull, (S, ISd, K,) which one should not call ثَوْرٌ أَعْيَنُ: (ISd, K:) and عَيْنَآءُ, of the (??) (S:) and women are likened to these wild animals. (TA,) b3: عَيْنَاءُ also signifies, applied to a sheep or goat (شَاة), Of which the eyes are black one the rest white; and some say, or the converse thereof: in this sense used as an epithet. (TA.) b4: (??) A good or beautiful, word or saying (??) a woman beautiful and wide on the eyes (Msb:) opposed to عَوْرآءُ. (??) b5: And. applied to a ?? i. q. ??: (K) [i. e. accord. to the TK. which is followed by Freytag, applied to a rhyme or meaning Having what is termed ??: (see De Sacy's Ar. (??), see, ed., ii. 657) but this explanation may be conjectural; and, (??) the meaning may be (assumed tropical:) (??) an effective an applied to a verse on an ode] b6: And i. q. ?? (K) [accord. to the TK as an epithet applied to land, and meaning (assumed tropical:) Black likened to the eye of the buffalo; for ?? was sometimes termed by the Arabs خُضْرَة. but this explanation also may be conjectural; and ا rather think that it is so, and that by خَضْرآءِ is here meant (assumed tropical:) a bucket with which water has been drawn long, so that it has become green or blackish; (see أَخْضرْ,) agreeably with the following explanation, which is immediately subjoined in the K]. b7: And A water-skin (قِرْبَة) ready to become lacerated, or rent, (K, TA, [see عَيْنٌ,]) and worn out. (TA.) مَعَانٌ [A place in which one is seen]. One says, القَوْمُ مِنْكَ مَعَانٌ [in which the last word is app. a mistranscription. for بِمَعَانٍ, as in Har p. 22,] The people, or party are [in a place] where thou sees them with thine eye. (TA.) b2: And A place of alighting or abode, (K, TA,) and one in which one is known to be, (TA.) So in the saying, الكُوفَةُ مَعَانٌ مِنهْا [El-Koofeh is a place of our alighting or abode, &c.,] (TA.) مَعِينٌ Smitten with the [evil] eye; as also ↓ مَعْيُونٌ, the complete form: (S, TA:) or, accord. to Ez-Zejjájee, the former has this meaning, but ↓ المَعْيُونُ means اَلَّذِى فِيهِ عَيْنٌ [in which the last word is probably a mistranscription for عَيْبٌ; so that the meaning is, in whom is a fault, or defect], (L, TA.) A poet says, (S,) namely, 'Abbás, (TA,) قَدْ كَانَ قَوْمُكَ يَحْسَبُونَكَ سَيِّدًا

↓ وَإِخَلُ أِنَّكَ سَيِّدٌ مَعْيُونُ [Thy people, or party, used to reckon thee a chief; but I think that them art a chief (??) with the evil eye, or, perhaps, in whom is a fault, or defect]. (S, TA.) b2: مَآءٌ مَعِينٌ and ↓ مَعْيُونٌ (S, K:) (assumed tropical:) Water of which one has reached the (??) or sources, by digging: (S:) or water that is apparent (ظَاهِرٌ, for which the CK has ظاهرٌ), (K, TA,) seen by the eye, (TA,) running upon the surface of the earth: (K, TA:) Bedr Ibn-(??) El-Hudhalee says.

↓ مَآءٌ يُجِمُّ لِحَافِرٍ مَعْيُونِ [meaning Water collecting for a digger of which the springs have been reached by digging]; the last word, it as said, being put by him in the gen. case because of the proximity (??) a word (??) that case, agreeably with a poetic license of which there are many (??) مَعْيُونٌ, as it is an epithet (??) Respecting the measure of مَعِينٌ, which (??) from عَيْنُ المَآءِ. and explain as meaning (??) the source apparent, (??) (??) some say that it is an (??) of مَفْعُولٌ though not having a verb; and some, that of the measure فَعِيلٌ, from المعْنُ signifying the drawing of water. (TA.) In the say إِنْ كَانَتِ البَشَرُ مَعِينًا لَا تُنْزَحُ, meaning [If the (??) one] having a running spring, (that was not (??) entirely exhausted,] معينا is made masc. to (??) with the word [??, which is masc. in form though fem. by usage]; or it is thus because (??) imagined to be of the measure فَعِيل, in the sense of the measure مَفْعُول; or because it is for ذَاتَ مَعِينٍ, i. e. [having] water running upon the surface of the earth. (Mgh.) In the Kur xxxvii.

44. [and in like manner in lvi. 18.] مَعِين is used as meaning (assumed tropical:) Wine running upon the surface of the earth, like rivers of water. (Jel.) b3: عَيْنٌ

↓ مَعْيُونَةٌ means (assumed tropical:) A spring, or source, having a continued increase of water (Aboo-Sa'eed, TA.) مُعَيَّنٌ (assumed tropical:) A garment figured with eyes (S in art. برج:) or a garment in the figuring of which are small تَرَابِيع [app. meaning quadrangular forms (in the CK تَرْبِيع)] like the eyes of wild animals. (K.) b2: And (assumed tropical:) A bull having a blackness between his eyes: (K:) or a bull; so called because of the largeness of his eyes: or so called because having spots of black and white, as though there were eyes upon his skin. (Ham p. 293.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) Locusts (جَرَاد) which, when stripped of the integument, are seen to be white and red: mentioned by Az in art. ينع, on the authority of ISh. (TA.) A2: [Also, as pass. part. n. of 2, (assumed tropical:) Individuated, or particularized; i. e. distinguished from the generality, or aggregate: &c.: see the verb. Hence] نِيَّةٌ مُعَيَّنَةٌ means [A distinct, particular, or special, purpose; lit.] a purpose made distinct: and it is allowable for one to attribute the action to the purpose, tropically; and thus to say ↓ نِيَّةٌ مُعَيِّنَةٌ [A distinguishing purpose], using the act. part. n. (Msb.) مُعَيِّنٌ: see an ex. of its fem. in what next precedes.

مِعْيَانٌ: see عَيُونٌ. [And see also مُعْتَانٌ.]

مَعْيُونٌ and its fem.: see مَعِينٌ, in six places.

مُعْتَانٌ An explorer of a people or party, who is sent before to seek for herbage and water and the places where rain has fallen, (K, TA, [in the CK, المِعْيانُ is erroneously put for المُعْتَانُ,]) and who searches for news or tidings. (TA.) مُتَعَيِّنٌ: see عَيِّنٌ.

غذو

1 غَذَوْتُهُ, (S, Msb, K, TA,) aor. ـْ (Msb,) inf. n. غَذْوٌ, (K,) I fed him, or nourished him, (S, Msb, K, TA,) [for instance,] a child, (S, TA,) with milk; (S, Msb, TA;) and غَذَيْتُهُ signifies the same, unknown by J, and therefore disallowed by him, (K and TA in art. غذى,) but known by ISd: (TA in that art.;) and so ↓ غَذَّيْتُهُ, (S, * Msb, K, TA,) inf. n. تَغْذِيَةٌ, (S, TA,) [but, accord. to SM.] in an intensive sense. (TA.) And غَذَاهُ الطَّعَامُ, aor. and inf. n. as above, The food [nourished him, or] had an agreeable, a wholesome, or a beneficial, effect upon him, and sufficed him; namely, a child. (Msb.) b2: And [hence,] غُذُو بِلِبَانِ الكَرَمِ (tropical:) [They were fed, or nourished, by sucking the milk of generosity; meaning they derived generosity from their parents]. (TA.) A2: غَذَا بَوْلَهُ, and غَذَا بِهِ, (K,) aor. and inf. n. as above, (TA,) He (a camel) interrupted his urine; (K, TA;) as also ↓ غذّاهُ, (S, K, TA,) inf. n. تَغْذِيَةٌ. (S, TA.) And غَذَا الكَلْبُ بِغَذًى [or بِغَذًا] The dog emitted urine in repeated discharges. (TA.) A3: غَذَا, said of urine, It became interrupted: (S, K, TA:) the verb being intrans. as well as trans. (TA.) b2: And, (S, M, K, TA,) aor. ـْ inf. n. غَذْوٌ and غَذَوَانٌ, (M, TA,) It flowed; (S, M, K, TA;) said of water, (S,) or, as some say, of anything, [or] of water or blood or sweat. (TA.) [Thus,] as IKtt says, the verb has two contr. significations. (TA.) It flowed with blood; (S, K;) aor. as above, inf. n. غَذْوٌ; (S;) said of a vein; as also ↓ غذّى, inf. n. تَغْذِيَةٌ. (S, K.) And It flowed continually; aor. as above; said of a wound. (TA.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) He went quickly. or swiftly; (S, M, K, TA,) aor. as above, inf. n. غَذْوٌ and غَذَوَانٌ; said of a horse. (TA.) 2 غَذَّوَ see the preceding paragraph, first sentence. b2: [Hence,] النَّارُ تُغَذَّى بِالحَطَبِ (tropical:) [The fire is fed with firewood]. (TA.) b3: And التَّغْذِيَةُ signifies also التَّرْبِيَةُ [app. as meaning The rearing a child &c. though it also means “ the feeding, or nourishing ”]: (S, K:) or in an intensive sense. (TA.) A2: See, again, 1, in two places.5 تغذّى quasi-pass. of 2: (Msb, K: *) see 8. b2: [Hence,] one says of a man, خَيْرُهُ يَتَغَذَّى كُلَّ يَوْمٍ (tropical:) His goodness increases every day. (TA.) 8 اغتذى He was, or became, fed, or nourished; (S, Msb, K;) as also ↓ تغذّى. (Msb, K.) Yousay, اغتذى بِهِ He was, or became, fed, or nourished, with it; (S, Msb;) namely, food, and beverage, (S,) or milk. (Msb.) 10 استغذاهُ He threw him down on the ground with vehemence. (K.) غَذًا or غَذًى [accord. to different copies of the K, the former agreeable with a general rule, though the latter is said in the TA to be the right,] The urine of the camel, (K, TA,) and of the dog. (TA. [See 1.]) غَذَوَانٌ [an inf. n. of غَذَا said of water, and of a horse, and hence, app.,] (assumed tropical:) Swift: (TA:) or brisk, lively, or sprightly, and swift; applied to a horse: (S, K, TA: [see also غَذَوَانٌ:]) or that interrupts his urine, or emits it in repeated discharges, (يَغْذُو بِبَوْلِهِ,) when he runs. (TA.) b2: And (applied to a man, TA) (assumed tropical:) Long-tongued, or clamorous and foul-tongued; foul, unseemly, or obscene [in speech]: fem. with ة: (K, TA:) the latter, applied to a woman, expl. by Fr as signifying فَاحِشَةٌ [i. e. foul, &c., as above]. (TA.) غَذَوِىٌّ: see غَذِيٌّ, in four places: b2: and see also عَدَوِيَّةٌ, in art. عدو.

غِذَآءٌ Aliment, or nutriment; consisting of food and of drink; (S, Msb;) the means of the growth, or increase, and of the sustenance, or support, of the body: (K:) pl. أَغْذِيَةٌ. (KL.) [One says رَجُلٌ حَسَنُ الغِذَآءِ A man good in respect of food: i. e., who feeds on good food: and سَيِّئُ الغِذَآءِ bad in respect of food: who feeds: a bad food.] b2: It is also applied, by the poet Eiyoob Ibn-'Abáyeh. to (assumed tropical:) The water for irrigation of palm-trees. (TA.) A2: Also pl. of غَذِىٌّ. (S, &c.) غَذِىٌّ A lamb, or kid; syn. سَخْلَةٌ; (S, Msb, K;) or, as some say, a lamb (حَمَل); (Msb:) and the pl. is غِذَآءٌ: (S, Msb, K:) and syn. with غَدَوِىٌّ in senses expl. in art. غدو: as also غَذَوِىٌّ: (K:) or غَذِىُّ المَالِ and ↓ غَذَوِيُّهُ signify the younglings of cattle, such as lambs or kids and the like; (S, Msb;) accord. to Khalaf El-Ahmar, (S,) or IF; so that they are of camels and of him and of sheep or goats: (Msb:) accord. to IAar, ↓ غَذَوِىٌّ is syn. with بهيم [an evident mistranscription for بَهْم, q. v.]: and signifies such as is fed: (TA:) and he was told, he says, by an Arab of the desert, of Belhujeym, that the ↓ غَذَوِىّ is the lamb (حَمَل), or the kid, that is (??) with the milk of its mother, but with another's milk; accord. to which explanation it is different from the غَذِيّ; and so it is accord. to A(??) as IF says, some imagine الغَذَوِىُّ to be from الغَذِىُّ, which signifies the سَخْلَة [as expl. in the beginning of this paragraph]. (Msb, TA.) The dim. of غَذِىٌّ is ↓ غُذَىٌّ. (S.) b2: See also عَدَوِيَّةٌ, in art. عدو.

غُذَىٌّ dim. of غَذِىٌّ, q. v. (S.) غَاذِى مَالٍ (assumed tropical:) A good manager or tender [of cattle]: (K, TA:) as though he fed them. or reared them. (TA.) A2: And الغَاذِى signifies also Teh wound that will not cease to bleed. (TA.) الغَاذِيَةُ A certain vein; (K, TA;) so called because of its flowing with blood. (TA.) b2: and The part that is in a state of commotion, [or that pulses,] of the top of the head of a [young] child. as long as it continues soft; for when it becomes hard, and becomes bone, it is termed يَأْفُوخ: pl. الغَوَاذِى: mentioned by Az: (TA:) also called الغَاذَّةُ. (IAar, K in art. غذ.) الغَيْذَا, of the measure فَيْعَلٌ [when indeterminate], from غَذَا “ it flowed,” occurring in a trad. as meaning The clouds, is said by Z to be the only word of this measure having the final radical letter infirm except الكَيْهَا, [which I do not find in its proper art.,] meaning “ the large, or bulky,” she-camel [like كَهَاةٌ and كَيْهَاةٌ].
