وصف

1 وَصُفَ He attained to the proper age for service. (K.) See an ex. in the K, voce مُخَلَّدُونَ.4 أَوْصَفَ and ↓ اِسْتَوْصَفَ He (a boy) became of full stature, and fit for service. (Mgh.) 8 اِتَّصَفَ بِالعِلْمِ [He was, or became, characterized, or he characterized himself, by knowledge, or science]. (Msb in art. أَهْلٌ.) 10 إِسْتَوْصَفَ see 4.

صِفَةٌ A quality; an attribute; a property; or a description, as meaning the aggregate of the qualities or attributes or properties of a thing; or the state, condition, or case, of a thing. So explained voce صِنْفٌ, and voce صُورَةٌ. See its syn. حَالٌ. b2: صِفَةٌ in grammar, The same as نَعْتٌ, An epithet. (K.) b3: A word denoting an attribute (مَعْنًى) and a substance (ذَات). Under this term are comprised the اسم فاعل, the اسم مفعول, the صفة مشبّهة, and the افعل التفضيل. (I'Ak, sect. الصفة المشبّهة باسم الفاعل.) b4: صِقَةٌ مُشَبَّهَةٌ [A simple epithet]; an epithet resembling an اسم فاعل. b5: صِفَةٌ غَالِبَةٌ An epithet in which the substantive character predominates. b6: صِفَةٌ, as a general term for an attributive word, is also applied by Lth and other old writers to An adverbial n. of place or time, and to a preposition. ويل



وَيْلَةُ and وَيْلًا لَهُ and وَيْلٌ لَهُ Woe to him! [See عَوْلَكَ]. Perdition befall him! Punishment befall him! (Kull, p. 377.) See voce وَيْبٌ, and voce وَيْحٌ, and وَيْسٌ.

وَيْهًا [an imperative verbal noun, which may be rendered On!] a word of incitement. (S, K.) One also says to a man, and to a horse, يَا وَيْهَاهْ [Ho! On!]. (A'Obeyd in TA in art. ايه.) See أَيَّهَ. b2: وَيْهَكَ: see أَيْهَكَ in art. ايه. I have not found this anywhere but in that art. in the K, and doubt its correctness.

زلق

1 زَلِقَ, aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. زَلَقٌ; (TA;) and زَلَقَ, aor. ـُ (K,) inf. n. زَلْقٌ; (TA;) He slipped; syn. زَلَّ; (K, TA;) for which ذَلَّ is erroneously put in [some of] the copies of the K. (TA. [See also 5.]) And زَلِقَتْ رِجْلُهُ, (S,) or القَدَمُ, (Msb,) aor. ـَ inf. n. زَلَقٌ, (S, Msb,) His foot, (S,) or the foot, (Msb,) slipped, (S,) or did not remain firm, or fixed, in its place. (Msb.) The former is also said of an arrow, [app. as meaning It slid along the ground,] like زَهِقَ [q. v.]. (JK in art. زهق.) b2: زَلِقَ بِمَكَانِهِ and زَلَقَ, He was, or became, disgusted by, or with, his place, or he loathed it, and removed, withdrew, or retired to a distance, from it. (K, TA.) b3: زَلَقَتْ, said of a she-camel, She was, or became, quick, or swift. (O, TA.) A2: زَلَقَهُ: see 4. b2: زَلَقَهُ عَنْ مَكَانِهِ, aor. ـِ (K,) inf. n. زَلْقٌ, (TA,) He removed him from his place. (K, TA.) Hence the reading of Aboo-Jaafar and Náfi', [in the Kur lxviii. 51,] وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيَزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ, meaning [And verily they who have disbelieved almost] smite thee with their evil eyes so as to remove thee from thy station in which God has placed thee, by reason of enmity to thee. (TA. [Or this reading may be rendered agreeably with the common reading: see 4.]) b3: زَلَقَ رَأْسَهُ, (S, K,) aor. ـِ inf. n. زَلْقٌ, (S,) He shaved his head; as also ↓ ازلقهُ; and ↓ زلّقهُ, (S, K,) inf. n. تَزْلِيقٌ: (S:) IB says that, accord. to 'Alee Ibn-Hamzeh, it is only زَبَقَهُ, with ب; and that الزَّبْقُ means the plucking out; not the shaving: but accord. to Fr, one says of him who has shaved his head قد زلقه, [whether with or without teshdeed is not shown,] and ازلقه. (TA.) 2 زلّق, [inf. n. تَزْلِيقٌ,] He made a place slippery, (K, TA,) so that it became like the مَزْلَقَة; and thus too though there be no water therein. (TA.) b2: Accord. to the O and K, [the inf. n.]

تَزْلِيقٌ also signifies The anointing the body with oils and the like, so that it becomes like the مَزْلَقَة; to which is added in the O, and though it be without water: but this is a confusion of two meanings; one of which is the first expl. above in this paragraph; and the other is, the anointing the body with oils and the like; as in the L and the Tekmileh. (TA.) b3: See also 4. b4: And see 1, last sentence. b5: زلّق الحَدِيدَةَ He made the iron thing to be always sharp. (K.) b6: رلّقهُ بِبَصَرِهِ, inf. n. as above, He looked sharply, or intently, at him, or it. (Ez-Zejjájee, TA.) b7: See also 2, last sentence, in art. دلص.4 ازلقهُ He made him to slip; as also ↓ زَلَقَهُ. (K.) All the readers except those of El-Medeeneh read, [in the Kur lxviii. 51,] وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ, meaning [and verily those who have disbelieved] almost make thee to fall by their looking hard at thee, with vehement hatred: so accord. to El-'Otbee: or the meaning is, (assumed tropical:) [almost] smite thee with their [evil] eyes: (TA:) [it is also said that] ازلق فُلَانًا بِبَصَرِهِ means (tropical:) he looked at such a one with the look of a person affected with displeasure, or anger: (K:) or so نَظَرَ إِلَى فُلَانٍ فَأَزْلَقَهُ بِبَصَرِهِ: (JM, TA:) and in this sense, also, is expl. the saying in the Kur mentioned above. (TA.) One says also ازلق رِجْلَهُ, (S,) or القَدَمَ, (Msb,) He made his (another's) foot to slip, (S,) or he made the foot not to remain firm, or fixed, in its place; and so ↓ زَلَّقَهَا. (Msb.) b2: ازلقت, said of a camel, (S, K, TA,) and of a mare, (TA,) She cast her young one; syn. أَسْقَطَتْ; (S, TA;) or أَجْهَضَتْ [q. v.]: (K:) or she (a mare) cast forth her young one completely formed: or, as some say, [her fœtus] not completely formed: (JK:) and you say also, ازلقت بِجَنِينِهَا, like أَمْلَصَتْ به [q. v.]: (Abu-l- 'Abbás, TA in art. ملص:) or ازلقت وَلَدَهَا is said of a female [of any kind], and means she cast forth her young one before it was completely formed. (Mgh.) b3: See also 1, last sentence.5 تزلّق He, or it, slipped, or slid, along; (KL;) like تزلّج. (S and TA in art. زلج. [See also 1.]) One says, تزلّقت الغُدَّةُ بَيْنَ الجِلْدِ وَاللَّحْمِ [The ganglion slipped about between the skin and the flesh]. (M in art. ديص.) b2: [Also It was, or became, smooth, or slippery: a signification indicated in the M, in art. ملس, where it is coupled with اِسْتَوَى.] b3: He anointed his body with oils and the like. (JK.) b4: He ornamented, or adorned, himself; (Aboo-Turáb, K, TA;) as also تزبّق: (Aboo-Turáb, TA:) and led an easy, and a soft, or delicate, life, so that his colour, and the exterior of his skin, had a shining, or glistening. (K, TA.) زَلْقٌ: see the next paragraph.

مَكَانٌ زَلَقٌ, (S,) or زَلَقٌ [alone], (K,) which is originally an inf. n., (S,) and ↓ زَلِقٌ and ↓ زَلْقٌ (K) and ↓ زَلَاقَةٌ and ↓ مَزْلَقٌ and ↓ مَزْلَقَةٌ, (S, K, TA, [the last two erroneously written in the CK مِزْلَق and مِزْلَقَة,]) all signify the same; (K;) A slippery place; a place on which the foot does not remain firm, or fixed. (S, TA.) Hence, in the Kur [xviii. 38], فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا, i. e., [So that it shall become] smooth ground, with nothing in it, or with no plants in it: or, accord. to Akh, such that the feet shall not stand firmly upon it. (TA.) A poet says, (TA,) namely, Mohammad Ibn-Besheer, (Ham p. 551,) قَدِّرْ لِرِجْلِكَ قَبْلَ الخَطْوِ مَوْقِعَهَا فَمَنْ عَلَا زَلَقًا عَنْ غِرَّةٍ زَلَجَا [Appoint for thy foot, before the stepping, its place upon which it shall fall, or, as in the Ham p. 522, simply its place, (مَوْضِعَهَا,)] for he who goes upon a slippery place, in consequence of inadvertence, slips]. (TA.) b2: زَلَقٌ also signifies The rump of a horse or similar beast. (S, K, TA.) زَلِقٌ: see the next preceding paragraph. b2: Applied to a man, Quickly angry (O, K) at what is said. (O) b3: And, (T, S, K,) as also ↓ زُمَلِقٌ (T, S, and K in art. زملق) and ↓ زُمَّلِقٌ and ↓ زُمَالِقٌ, (S, and K in art. زملق,) applied to a man, (T, S,) Qui semen emittit quum verba mulieri facit, sine congressu: (T, TA:) or qui semen emittit ante initum. (S, K.) زَلَقَةٌ A smooth rock; (K;) as also زَلَفَةٌ. (K in art. زلف.) b2: And, (Az, K,) as also the latter word, (Az, TA,) A mirror. (Az, K. [In the CK, المَرْأَةُ is erroneously put for المِرْآةُ.]) نَاقَةٌ زَلُوقٌ A quick, or swift, she-camel; (Az, K;) as also زَلُوجٌ. (Az, TA.) b2: And عُقْبَةٌ زَلُوقٌ [and زَلُوجٌ and زَلُوخٌ, in the CK, erroneously, عَقَبَةٌ,] A far-extending [stage of a journey]. (K, TA.) زَلِيقٌ i. q. سِقْطٌ [meaning A young one, or fœtus, that falls from the belly of the mother abortively, or in an immature, or imperfect, state, or dead, but having the form developed, or manifest]. (S, K.) زَلَاقَةٌ: see زَلَقٌ.

زُلَّيْقٌ The smooth peach; (S, K;) called in Pers\.

شِيفْتَهْ رَنْگ. (S.) زُمَلِقٌ and زُمَّلِقٌ and زُمَالِقٌ: see زَلِقٌ.

زِيحٌ زَيْلَقٌ A wind swift in its passage. (Kr, TA.) الزَّالُوقُ the name of a shield belonging to the Prophet; meaning That from which the weapon slips off, so that it does not wound the bearer. (TA.) أَزْلَقُ (K in art. دلص) Hairless and glistening in body. (TK in that art.) مَزْلَقٌ: see زَلَقٌ.

مَزْلَقَةٌ: see زَلَقٌ. [Hence,] one says, هُوَ عَلَى

مَزْلَقَةِ البَاطِلِ [He is on the slippery way of false religion or the like]. (MF voce جَادَّــةٌ, q. v.) مِزْلَاقٌ i. q. مِزْلَاجٌ, (K,) a dial. var. of the latter word, [q. v.,] meaning The thing by means of which a door is closed, or made fast, and which is opened without a key. (S, K.) b2: Also A mare [or other female (see 4)] that often casts her young; (S, K;) i. e., that usually does so; and applied in this sense to a camel. (TA.)

زجل

1 زَجِلَ, (MA, K,) aor. ـَ (K,) inf. n. زَجَلٌ, (MA, K, KL, and Har p. 240,) He uttered his voice, or a cry; or made a sound, or cry: (MA, KL:) or he raised his voice, (K, Har,) to evince emotion. (Har.) b2: [It seems to be indicated in the K that it signifies also He played, or sported: and He, or it (i. e. a company of men), raised cries, shouts, noises, a clamour, or confused cries or shouts or noises: and He trilled, or quavered, and prolonged his voice; or prolonged it, and modulated it sweetly. See the next paragraph.]

زَجَلٌ inf. n. of زَجِلَ: (MA, K:) [and used as a simple subst:] i. q. صَوْتٌ [as an inf. n., meaning The uttering of the voice, or of a sound, or cry: or, as a simple subst., a voice, sound, or cry]: (S:) or a high, or loud, voice: such have the angels when celebrating the praises of God: (TA:) [and] a vehement sound. (Ham p. 627.) [Hence,] سَحَابٌ ذُو زَجَلٍ Clouds having a thundering: (TA:) [and] so ↓ سَحَابٌ زَجِلٌ. (S.) b2: A clamour; or a confusion, or mixture, of cries or shouts or noises, or of crying or shouting or noise. (K.) b3: [A low, or faint, sound: hence,] زَجَلُ الجِنِّ means عَزِيفُهَا [i. e. The low, or faint, sound of the jinn, or genii, that is heard by night in the deserts; and said to be a sound like drumming: or the sound of the winds in the atmosphere, imagined by the people of the desert to be the sound of the jinn]. (TA.) b4: A trilling, or quavering, and prolonging of the voice; or a prolonging of the voice, and modulating it sweetly. (K.) A poet likens it to the voice of one urging on camels by singing to them, and to the playing on a reedpipe. (Sb, TA.) b5: Also Play, or sport. (K.) b6: And A species of verse, well known; [a vulgar sort of unmeasured song or balled;] in this sense post-classical. (TA.) زَجِلٌ Raising his voice; as also ↓ زَاجِلٌ. (K.) b2: [Hence,] سَحَابٌ زَجِلٌ: see زَجَلٌ And غَيْثٌ زَجِلٌ Rain accompanied by the sound of thunder. (TA.) And نَبْتٌ زَجِلٌ A plant, or herbage, in which, or among which, the wind makes a sound. زُجْلَةٌ The sound, or voice, or noise, of men; as also ↓ زَجْلَةٌ. (K.) b2: And A company, a collection, or an assemblage: (K:) or a party, or company, of men, (S, K,) peculiarly: (TA:) as also ↓ زَجْلَةٌ: (K:) pl. of the former زُجَلٌ. 1 فَرَشَهُ, (S, A, O, K,) aor. ـُ (S, O,) inf. n. فَرْشٌ (O, K) and فِرَاشٌ, (S, O, K,) He spread it; expanded it. (S, A, O, K.) You say, فَرَشتُ لَهُ فِرَاشًا and فَرَشْتُهُ فِرَاشًا (A, TA) and ↓ أَفْرَشْتُهُ (TA) ↓ and اِفْتَرَشْتُهُ (A) [I spread for him a bed: or the last signifies I spread it (namely a bed) for myself]. And فَرَشْتُ فُلَانًا I spread for such a one. (Lth.) And فَرَشَ فُلَانًا بِسَاطًا, inf. n. فَرْشٌ; and بساطا ↓ أَفْرَشَهُ; and بساطا ↓ فَرَّشَهُ, inf. n. تَفْرِيشٌ; He spread for such a one a carpet (IAar, K) in his entertainment. (IAar.) And فَرَّشَ ↓ الثَّوْبَ, inf. n. تَفْرِيشٌ; and ↓ افترشهُ; [He spread the garment, or piece of cloth: or the latter signifies he spread it for himself.] (TA.) and تَحْتَهُ تُرَابًا ↓ افترش or ثَوْبًا [He spread, or spread for himself, beneath him, dust, or a garment, or piece of cloth]. (A.) And الرَّمْلَ ↓ كُنْتُ أَفْتَرِشُ وَأَتَوَسَّدُ الحَجَرَ [I used to spread the sand for my bed, and make the stone my pillow]. (A, TA.) And ذِرَاعَيْهِ ↓ افترش, (A, TA,) and يَدَيْهِ, (TA,) He (a lion, and a wolf, and a dog, TA, or a beast of prey, A, TA) spread his fore legs upon the ground: (TA:) and the former phrase, he (a man, Msb, TA) spread his fore arms upon the ground, (S, K, TA,) in the same manner, not raising them from the ground; the doing of which in prostrating oneself in prayer, is forbidden: (TA:) or laid his fore arms upon the ground (Mgh, Msb) like a bed for himself. (Msb.) فَرْشٌ [as an inf. n. of which the verb is فُرِشَت, as is shown by an explanation of إَقْعَادٌ in the S and L, and by the phrase مَفْرُوشَةُ الرِّجْلِ mentioned in the S and O and TA,] in the hind leg of a camel [and of a horse as is shown by the explanation above mentioned of اقعاد] signifies The being a little expanded; which is approved: (S, O, K:) when the width [between the shanks] is immoderate, so that the hock-joints knock together, which state is termed عَقَلٌ [inf. n. of عَقِلَ], it is disapproved: or, as some say, it signifies its not being erect nor much expanded. (S, O.) and فَرَشَ اللّٰهُ الفَرْشَ, (Fr, S,) inf. n. فَرْشٌ, (Fr, S, K,) means God spread abroad the young camels; syn. بَثَّ. (Fr, S, K. *) b2: [Hence,] فَرَشَهُ أَمْرَهُ, (S,) or أَمْرًا, (K,) (tropical:) He made, or rendered, his states, or case, or affair, (S,) or a state, &c., (K,) ample, or free from straitness, to him; and laid it open to him, altogether; [as though he expanded it to him;] syn. أَوْسَعَهُ إِيَّاهُ, (S, K,) and بَسَطَهُ لَهُ كُلَّهُ. (TA.) And in like manner the saying of 'Alee, فَرَشْتُكُمُ المَعْرُوفَ, is expl. by Ibn-Abi-l-Hadeed as signifying أَوْسَعْتُكُمْ إِيَّاهُ [meaning (tropical:) I largely conferred upon you favour, or kindness]: but MF deems this strange. (TA.) You say also, فَرَشْتُهُ أَمْرِى (tropical:) I displayed, or laid open, to him my state, or case, or affair; [and so أَمْرِى ↓ أَفْرَشْتُهُ; (see an ex. voce بَاطِنٌ;)] syn. بَسَطْتُهُ لَهُ. (A.) [and agreeably with this explanation, probably, the saying of 'Alee mentioned above should be rendered in the opinion of MF.] b3: [Hence also,] فُلَانٌ يَفْرُشُ نَفْسَهُ لِلنَّاسِ (tropical:) [Such a one lays himself out for the service of men]; (A;) and نَفْسَهُ ↓ يَفْتَرِشُ لَهُمْ: (TA:) [or perhaps, makes himself like a victim for them: (see مُتَفَرِّشٌ, below:) for you say, فَرَشَهُ لِلذَّبْحِ, or ↓ أَفْرَشَهُ, (which latter form is mentioned by Freytag in his Lexicon, but without any indication of the authority,) meaning, (assumed tropical:) he threw him down (namely a beast) for slaughter: (see فَرْشٌ, below:)] and ↓ افترشهُ (tropical:) he prostrated him, and got upon him: (A:) or (tropical:) he overcame him, (meaning another man,) and prostrated him, (O, K, TA,) and got upon him. (TA.) b4: فَرَشَ المَكَانَ, aor. ـُ and فَرِشَ, inf. n. فَرْشٌ, means He spread the place [with carpets or the like]; as also ↓ افرشهُ, and ↓ فرّشهُ. (Msb.) And الدَّارَ ↓ فرّش, inf. n. تَفْرِيشٌ, He paved the house; (Lth, S, K;) he spread in the house baked bricks, or broad and thin stones. (Az, TA.) b5: هٰذَا فِرَاشٌ يَفْرُشُكَ [This is a bed sufficiently large for thee] is like the saying هٰذِهِ شَمْلَةٌ تَشْمَلُكَ i. e. تَسَعُكَ. (TA in art. شمل.) A2: فرش عَنْهُ [app. فَرَشَ] He desired, and prepared himself for, it, or him. (TA.) A3: and فَرَشَ, aor. ـُ (O, TA,) inf. n. فَرْشٌ, (O, K, TA,) He lied: (O, K, * TA:) one says, كَمْ تَفْرُشُ i. e. [How long] wilt thou lie? (O, TA.) 2 فَرَّشَ see 1, in four places; two near the beginning and two near the end.

A2: فرّش الزَّرْعُ, inf. n. تَفْرِيشٌ, (tropical:) The seed-produce spread itself (S, A, TA) upon the surface of the earth. (TA.) You say, فَرَّخَ الزَّرْعُ وَفَرَّشَ (tropical:) [The seed-produce put forth its shoots, and spread itself upon the surface of the earth]. (A.) And the latter of these two verbs is also like the former [in signification]. (TA.) b2: فرّش الطَّائِرُ, (A, K,) inf. n. as above; (K;) and ↓ تفرّش; (S, A, K;) (tropical:) The bird expanded and flapped its wings, (S, A, K, * TA,) عَلَى شَىْءٍ over a thing, (A, K, TA,) without alighting: (A, TA:) and ↓ the latter verb, it (a young locust) spread its wings. (Mgh.) 4 أَفْرَشَ see 1, in five places.

A2: افرشهُ also signifies (tropical:) He spoke evil of him; or did so in his absence: (IAar, A, * O, K, TA:) and they say, أَفْرَشْتَ فِى عِرْضِى (tropical:) [Thou spakest evil of me; &c.]. (TA.) [See افترش عِرْضَهُ.]

A3: And (assumed tropical:) He made it thin; or thin, and fine in the edge; namely, a sword. (O, K.) A4: افرش الشَّجَرُ (tropical:) The trees put forth branches; syn. أَغْصَنَ. (A, TA.) b2: افرش عَنْهُ (tropical:) He, or it, left him, or quitted him. (S, A, K.) You say, ضَرَبَهُ فَمَا أَفْرَشَ عَنْهُ حَتَّى قَتَلَهُ (tropical:) He beat him, or smote him, and left him not until he slew him. (A, * TA.) And افرش عَنْهُمُ المَوْتُ (tropical:) Death quitted them; became withdrawn from them. (IAar, O.) A5: افرشت said of a mare, (assumed tropical:) She desired to be covered. (O.) A6: افرشهُ [from فَرْشٌ signifying “ young camels ”] He gave him young camels, (O, K,) small or large. (O.) b2: and افرش [app. أَفْرَشَ, or perhaps أُشْرِفَ,] He (a man) became a possessor of فرش [app. فَرْش, and meaning young camels]. (IKtt, TA.) A7: And افرش said of a place, It abounded with فَرَاش, (O, K, TA,) i. e., [app., moths, or butterflies, and, as being the cause thereof,] seed-produce. (TA.) A8: أَقْفَلَ فَأَفْرَشَ [He locked, and made fast by means of the catch, or catches, (فَرَاشَة, or فَرَاش, which see below,) of the lock]. (TA.) فَرْشٌ [an inf. n. of 1, q. v. passim. b2: Also, used in the sense of a pass. part. n. in which the quality of a subst. is predominant,] What is spread, of household furniture, (S, K,) [such as carpets and mattresses and the like. See also فِرَاشٌ.] b3: (tropical:) Seed-produce when it spreads itself (S, K, TA) upon the ground: (TA:) in [some of] the copies of the K, instead of إِذَا فَرَّشَ, which is the right reading, we find اذا فُرِشَ: accord. to some, the word signifies seed-produce when it has become three-leaved, or four-leaved. (TA.) b4: (assumed tropical:) A place abounding with plants or herbage. (O, K.) b5: (tropical:) A wide, or spacious, plain, or tract of land, or place: (S, K, TA:) or land that is plain, or even, and soft, and unobstructed by mountains: (TA:) or a depressed tract of land in which are trees of the kinds called عُرْفُط and سَلَم, (IAar, O,) which cause the mouths of the camels that eat them to become relaxed. (O.) [Hence, app., the saying,] مِنَ العَرْشِ إِلَى الفَرْشِ, meaning, [From the highest sphere, or the empyrean, to] the earth. (A in art. عرش.) b6: (assumed tropical:) A collection of trees of the kind called عِضَاه: and a round plot of trees of the kind called طَلْح. (TA.) b7: (tropical:) Shrubs, or small trees: (Lth, A, K:) and small fire-wood. (Lth, K.) b8: (tropical:) Young camels; or the young of camels; (Fr, S, A, * K;) and ↓ فَرِيشٌ is said to have this meaning; but accord. to Aboo-Bekr, erroneously: (TA:) so the former signifies in the Kur vi. 143: (S, K:) Fr says, I have heard no pl. of it: and he adds, that it may here be an inf. n. used as a subst., from the saying, فَرَشَهَا اللّٰهُ فَرْشًا, meaning, بَثَّهَا بَثًّا: [see 1:] (S, TA:) but it is said in the K that in all of the above-mentioned senses that are assigned to it in that work, it has no sing.; meaning that it is used alike as sing. and pl.: (TA:) and bulls or cows: and sheep or goats: (K:) so accord. to some of the expositors of the Kur: (TA:) and such as are fit for nothing but slaughter, (K, TA,) of camels, and of bulls or cows, and of sheep or goats; as some say: (TA:) or such as is thrown down (يُفْرَشُ, i. e., يُلْقَى,) for slaughter, of the young of camels, and bulls or cows, and sheep or goats; used alike as sing. and pl.: (Mgh:) and فَرْشُ الإِبِلِ also signifies old camels. (Th, TA.) فَرْشَةٌ A track, somewhat depressed, extending to the distance [of the journey] of a day and a night, and the like thereof, and only in land that is wide and level and like the [desert termed] صَحْرَآء: pl. فُرُوشٌ. (AHn, TA.) فِرْشَةٌ Form; appearance; garb; or the like; syn. هَيْئَةٌ: so in the saying, هُوَ حَسَنُ الفِرْشَةِ [He is goodly in form, &c.]. (O, K.) فَرْشِىٌّ A seller of فَرْش [meaning household furniture such as carpets and mattresses and the like]. (TA.) فَرَاشٌ [Moths, and the like, that fly into the flame of a lamp &c.;] the flying things (S, TA) that fall one after another into the lamp, or lighted wick, (S, K, TA,) to burn themselves: (TA:) [and accord. to modern usage, butterflies also:] a pl., [or rather a coll. gen. n.,] of which the sing. [or n. un.] is ↓ with ة: (S, K:) the former mentioned in the Kur ci. 3: (TA:) or the former signifies what one sees, resembling small gnats, falling, one after another, into the fire: (Zj:) or young locusts, when their wings grow, (Fr, Mgh, Jel,) and they spread them forth, (Mgh,) and mount, one upon another: (Fr, Mgh:) and silk-worms; app. so called because they become like these when they come forth from the cocoon. (Mgh.) It is said in a prov., ↓ أَطْيَشُ مِنْ فَرَاشَةٍ [More light, or unsteady, or light-witted, than a moth that flies into the flame of the lamp]. (S.) And ↓ فَرَاشَةٌ is used to signify (tropical:) A man who is light (A, K) in head; (A, TA;) light-witted, or unsteady; (TA;) such being likened to the فراشة of the lamp, in respect of lightness, or unsteadiness, and contemptibleness. (A, * TA.) A2: Also Thin pieces of bone, such as fly off from any bone when it is struck: or any crusts, or coverings, that are upon bone, exclusive of the flesh: or the bone of the eyebrow: or what is thin, of the bone of the head: or the bones that come forth from the head of a man when it is broken: (TA:) or فَرَاشُ الرَّأْسِ signifies certain thin bones that are next to the bone that covers the brain: (S, TA:) and ↓ فَرَاشَةٌ, any thin bone: (S, K:) and الرَّأْسِ ↓ فَرَاشَةُ, the thin bones, or pieces of bone, of the head, such as fly off in consequence of a blow. (TA.) b2: Also, فَرَاشُ الظَّهْرِ The place where the upper parts of the ribs are infixed in [the spine of] the back. (TA.) b3: and الفَرَاشَانِ The two extremities of the haunches, in [or at] the نُقْرَة, q. v. (TA.) b4: And The parts of the upper portions (فُرُوع) of the two shoulder-blades that rise towards the base of the neck and the even part of the back. (AO, O.) b5: And Two veins, green, or of a dark, or an ashy, dust-colour, (أَخْضَرَانِ,) beneath the tongue. (En-Nadr, O, K. * [In the last of these, this signification and the next are erroneously assigned to the sing. word. See also الفِرَاشُ.]) b6: Also, (TA,) or فَرَاشَا اللِّجَامِ (En-Nadr, O,) or ↓ فَرَاشَتَاهُ, (IDrd in his Book on the Saddle and Bridle,) The two iron things with which are made fast the check-straps of the headstall. (En-Nadr, O, K.) b7: And فَرَاشٌ and ↓ فَرَاشَةٌ also signify The edge of anything. (Aboo-Sa'eed, in TA, art. نسر.) A3: And The former, Mud that has dried, after the water, upon the ground. (S, O, K.) b2: And it is said to signify A little water in pools left by torrents: n. un. ↓ فَرَاشَةٌ [q. v.]. (TA.) b3: And [Little] bubbles (حَبَب) upon the surface of [the beverage called] نَبِيذ: (S, O, K:) and likewise of the water of sweat: (S, * L:) or a little sweat: so says IAar. (L.) A4: فَرَاشُ قُفْلٍ signifies The مَنَاشِب [or catches] of a lock; [app. meaning the little pins which fall into corresponding holes in the bolt of the Arabian wooden lock of a door, (which see figured and described in the Introduction to my work on the Modern Egyptians,) when it is pushed into the hole or staple of the door-post, preventing its being drawn back until they are raised by the key, which has small pins, made to correspond with the holes, so that, being introduced into these, they push up the catching pins:] n. un. ↓ with ة: (A 'Obeyd, TA:) or قُفْلٍ ↓ فَرَاشَةُ signifies what catches, or sticks fast, in a lock; (S, K;) [or, as expl. in the Arabic Dictionary of Farhát, what enters into a lock and makes it fast;] meaning its teeth; (TK;) [which are the little pins described above:] the word is thought by IDrd to be not Arabic: or, thus applied, it is from the same word as signifying “ a thin bone,” because of the thinness of the فراشة of the lock. (TA.) فِرَاشٌ A thing that is spread (Mgh, K) upon the ground: (Mgh:) a thing that is spread for one to sit or lie upon; in which sense it is used in the Kur ii. 20: (TA:) and particularly, a bed, upon which one sleeps: (AA, Mgh:) pl. [of pauc.]

أَفْرِشَةٌ (TA) and [of mult.] فُرُشٌ, (S, K,) for which one may say, in the dial. of the Benoo-Temeem, فُرْشٌ. (Sb.) [See also فَرْشٌ: and see what is quoted below from a trad.] b2: Hence, (TA,) (tropical:) A man's wife; (AA, S, O, K;) as also إِزَارٌ and لِحَافٌ: (O, TA:) pl. فُرُشٌ; so used, accord. to some, in the Kur lvi. 33. (K.) b3: Also (tropical:) A woman's husband: (AA, Er-Rághib:) and a female slave's master, or owner. (TA.) So, accord. to some, in the words of a trad., الوَلَدُ لِلْفِرَاشِ وَلِلعَاهِرِ الحَجَرُ, meaning The child is for the husband; (Er-Rághib, TA;) or for the master of the bed, who is the husband, or the owner of the woman; (Mgh, TA;) or for the bed, so that there is no ellipsis; (TA;) and for the adulterer, or fornicator, shall be stones, like as you say he shall have dust, meaning, nothing; i. e., he shall have no right of relationship; or, accord. to some, stoning. (Mgh.) [See also عَاهِرٌ.] b4: (assumed tropical:) The nest of a bird. (O, K, * TA.) b5: (assumed tropical:) A house, or tent. (AA.) b6: And الفِرَاشُ signifies The place against which the tongue goes in the furthest, or innermost, part of the mouth; (AA, O, K, TA;) or, as some say, in the lower part of the حَنَك [which word app. here, as it often does, means the palate]: or فِرَاشُ اللِّسَانِ signifies the portion of skin (الجِلْدَةُ [to which is here added الشَّنَّآء, app. a mistranscription which I am unable to rectify,] that covers the bases of the upper teeth. (TA. [In the TA voce مَحَارَةُ, in art. حور, q. v., q. v., it is written الفِرَاشَةُ.]) فَرِيشٌ A plant, or herbage, that becomes spread upon the ground, not standing up upon a stem. (TA.) [See also مُفَرِّشٌ.] b2: And (assumed tropical:) A girl, or young woman, compressed by a man; (O, K; *) an instance of فَعِيلٌ from اِفْتَعَلَ; (O;) [being from اِفْتَرَشَ;] but not heard by Az on any other authority than that of Lth. (TA.) b3: And (assumed tropical:) An Arabian Bull [or perhaps it is properly an epithet applied to that animal as meaning] having no hump: (TA:) [see also مُفَرَّشٌ as applied to a camel:] or فِرَاشٌ, which is pl. of فَرِيشٌ, signifies a sort of oxen, between the دِرَاب and عِرَاب having small humps, and their اعياب [a mistranscription for أَغْبَاب, i. e. dewlaps, pl. of غَبَبٌ,] are flaccid, or pendulous. (TA voce دَرَبَانِيَّةٌ.) b4: Also (tropical:) A mare, (As, O, K,) or any solid-hoofed animal, (S,) seven days, (As, S, K,) or seven nights, (O,) after her having foaled; (As, S, O, K, TA;) which is the best of times for putting a burden upon her: (O, K:) and that has recently brought forth; (O, K, TA;) so says KT; like the نُفَسَآ of women; or like the مُعْوِذ of she-camels: (TA:) pl. فَرَائِشُ. فَرَاشَةٌ: see فَرَاشٌ, in ten places.

A2: Also (tropical:) A small quantity of water: (A, O, K, TA:) one says, لَمْ يَبْقَ فِى الإِنَآءِ إِلَّا فَرَاشَةٌ [There remained not in the vessel save a small quantity of water]. (O, TA.) And A small quantity of water remaining in pools left by torrents, the ground beneath which is seen, by reason of its clearness: and some say, a place where water collects and remains in a smooth, or hard and smooth, rock. (TA.) A3: And Great stones, like mill-stones, which are laid first [as a foundation] and upon which is then built a تَرْكِيب, i. e. an enclosure for palm-trees. (TA.) A4: And الفَرَاشَتَانِ signifies Two cartilages near, or by, the لَهَاة [which generally means the uvula; but also, the arches, or pillars, of the soft palate; or the furthest part of the mouth]. (TA.) فَرَّاشٌ One who spreads the carpets and similar furniture [such as beds, or mattresses, and the like, and keeps them in order: app. a post-classical word: fem. with ة]. (KL.) مِفْرَشٌ A thing resembling the شَاذَكُونَة [a kind of thick quilted stuff made in El-Yemen]; (O, K;) i. e. a thing that is put upon the صُفَّة [or covering next the saddle] to sit upon; (TA;) as also ↓ مِفْرَشَةٌ: (A, TA:) or the latter is smaller than the former, (O, K,) and is put upon the صُفَّة of the camel's saddle, (A,) or upon the camel's saddle [itself], to sit upon: (O, K:) [pl. مَفَارِشُ.]

b2: [Hence,] مَفَارِشُ is applied to signify (tropical:) Women, or wives. (A, TA.) One says, فُلَانٌ كَرِيمُ المَفَارِشِ (tropical:) Such a one is a person who has highborn wives or women; (A;) or who takes as his wives high-born women. (S, O, K.) One says also of a man who has never married, إِنَّهُ لَهَالِكُ المِفْرَشِ, meaning (assumed tropical:) Verily his life has passed away lost. (TA.) And هُلْكُ المَفَارِشِ is said to mean (assumed tropical:) Persons who will not die upon their beds, and will not die otherwise than by slaughter. (TA.) مِفْرَشَةٌ: see the next preceding paragraph.

جَمَلٌ مُفَرَّشٌ, (O, K,) [and] ↓ جَمَلٌ مُفْتَرِشُ الأَرْضِ, (T, TA,) or الظَّهْرِ ↓ مُفْتَرَشُ, (A, TA,) (tropical:) A camel having no hump. (T, A, O, K, TA.) [See also فَرِيشٌ.] And الظَّهْرِ ↓ أَكَمَةٌ مُفْتَرِشَةُ, (S, TA,) or الظهر ↓ مُفْتَرَشَةُ, (as in one of my copies of the S and in a copy of the A,) (tropical:) A flat-topped [hill, or eminence, of the kind termed] اكمة. (S, A, TA.) مُفَرِّشٌ Seed-produce spreading itself (S, K, TA) upon the ground. (TA.) (S, O, K.) مَفْرُوشَةُ الرِّجْلِ (S, O, TA) applied to a she-camel, (TA,) Having what is termed فَرْشٌ in the kind leg; (thus, by implication, in the S and O; [see 1;]) or having a [certain] bending in the kind leg. فُلَانٌ مُتَفَرِّشٌ لِلنَّاسِ (tropical:) Such a one is a person who lays himself out for the service of men, or makes himself like a victim for them, (يَفْرُشُ لَهُمْ نَفْسَهُ,) in kindness for them. (A.) And فُلَانٌ كَرِيمٌ مُتَفَرِّشٌ لِأَصْحَابِهِ (tropical:) Such a one is a generous person, who lays himself out for the service of his companions, &c.; expl. by the words يَفْتَرِشُ نَفْسَهُ لَهُمْ. 1 لَعِبَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. لَعِبٌ (which is the original [and most common] form, TA) and لِعْبٌ (S, K: the latter of these inf. ns. contracted from the former, Msb) and لَعْبٌ (K: also contracted from the first: not heard by IKt; but authorized by Mekkee, and, accord. to him, agreeable with a constant rule, applicable in the case of any word of a similar measure having a guttural letter as its medial radical, whether a noun or verb: (TA:) and أُلْعُوبَةٌ (S, K) and تَلْعَابٌ; (K; but this last has an intensive, or a frequentative, signification; S;) and ↓ لعّب (K) and ↓ تلعّب (S, K: but this last has a frequentative [or an intensive] signification; S; [and so too has that immediately preceding it;]) and ↓ تلاعب; (K;) He played, sported, gamed, jested, or joked: contr. of جَدَّ, which signifies “ he was serious, or in earnest. ” (K.) [You say] بَيْنَهُمْ أُلْعُوبَةٌ Between them is playing, sporting, or the like. (K.) (TA.) b3: لَعِبَ بِنَا المَوْجُ [The waves sported with us]: the commotion of the waves is called “ sporting ” because it does not convey the voyagers to the quarter whither they desire to go. (TA, from a trad.) A2: لَعَبَ, (and لَعِبَ, K,) aor. ـَ inf. n. لَعْبٌ; (S, K;) and ↓ العب; (K;) He (a child, S) slavered; drivelled; emitted a flow of slaver or drivel from his mouth. (S, K.) The first word is the most approved: (TA:) or الصَّبِىُّ ↓ العب signifies the child became slavering, or drivelling. (S.) 3 لَاْعَبَ see 1.4 أَلْعَبَهَا He made her to play, sport, or game, &c., (with him: accord. to the CK:) or he brought her a thing with which to play, &c. (K.) لِعْبٌ: see لَعِبٌ لَعِبٌ and ↓ لِعِبٌ (with two kesrehs, agreeably with a constant rule obtaining in cases of this kind, [whereby the measure فَعِلٌ is changed into فِعِلٌ, the medial radical letter being a guttural,] TA, [but in the CK and a MS. copy, ↓ لِعْبٌ, which is also regularly changed from the first,]) and ↓ أُلْعُبَانٌ and ↓ لُعَبَةٌ (K) and ↓ لُعْبَةٌ (TA, as from the K, [but not found by me in any copy of the latter work,]) and ↓ تِلْعِيبَةٌ and ↓ تِلْعَابٌ (K) and ↓ تِلْعَابَةٌ (S, K) and ↓ تَلْعَابٌ and ↓ تَلْعَابَةٌ and ↓ تِلِعَّابٌ and ↓ تِلِعَّابَةٌ (K: the last like تِلِقَّامَةٌ: the ة is added to give [additional] intensiveness to the signification, as in the cases of عَلَّامَةٌ and نَسَّابَةٌ: it is also used by En-Nábighah El-Jaadee in the place of an inf. n.: TA) and ↓ لَعُوبٌ [which is common to both genders] and ↓ لَعَّابٌ (A, &c.) One who plays, sports, games, jests, or jokes, much, or often; a great player, sporter, &c. (S, K.) لِعِبٌ: see لَعِبٌ.

لَعْبَةٌ (Th, S) and ↓ لُعْبَةٌ (ISk, S, K) A turn in play, in a game, &c.; a single act of a play or game &c. (S, K, &c.) [You say] ↓ لِمَنَ اللُّعْبَةُ [Whose turn is it to play?] with dammeh to the ل, because it is a subst.; (ISk;) [and] أُقْعُدْ أَفْرُغَ مِنْ

↓ هٰذِهِ اللُّعْبَةِ [Sit until I finish this turn of the game]: but accord. to Th, it is better to say من هذه اللَّعْبَةِ, with fet-hah; because what is meant is a single turn in the game. (S.) b2: لَعِبْتُ لَعْبَةً وَاحِدَةً [I played one game]. (Fr.) A2: اللَّعْبَةُ البَرْبَرِيَّةُ (in some copies of the K, ↓ اللُّعْبَةُ) A certain medicine, resembling what is called السُّورَنْجَانُ, which fattens. (K.) لُعْبَةٌ Anything with which one plays, as شِطْرَنْج and the like, (S, K,) and نَرْد. (S.) See also لَعْبَةٌ. b2: A man with whom one plays, sports, or jests: (K:) one who is a laughing-stock: (TA:) a stupid fellow, or fool, whom one mocks, laughs at, or ridicules; a stupid laughing-stock (K.) b3: An image or effigy [with which to play: a puppet: so the word signifies in the present day]. (K.) [It was probably sometimes applied to A crucifix. And hence, or perhaps from its resemblance to a man with outstretched arms, it is applied by some post-classical writers to A cross; and anything in the form of a cross.]

لِعْبَةٌ A mode, or manner, of playing, sporting, gaming, &c. You say, فُلَانٌ حَسَنُ اللِّعْبَةِ [Such a one has a good manner of playing, &c. (S.) لُعَبَةٌ: see لَعِبٌ.

لُعَابٌ What flows from the mouth; slaver; drivel. (S, K.) b2: [Mucilage of plants. See S, art. لزج &c.] b3: لُعَابُ النَّخْلِ (tropical:) The honey of the date-palm. (S, K.) b4: لُعَابُ الشَّمْسِ (tropical:) A thing (that one sees, TA) as though descending from the sky, at the time of the mid-day heat; (K;) what one sees in a time of intense heat, resembling cobwebs: [i. e. gossamer:] also said to be the سَرَاب, or mirage: (S:) it is what is called مُخَاطُ الشَّيْطَانِ, and سَهَامٌ, and رِيقُ الشَّمْسِ, resembling threads, seen in the air when the heat is intense and the air calm: and he who asserts the لعاب الشمس to be the سراب says what is false; for that is the سراب that is seen at mid-day resembling running water: only he knows these things who has been constantly in the deserts, and has journeyed during the mid-day heats. (Az.) [In Egypt, in very hot and calm weather, I have seen, though very rarely, great quantities of the filmy substances above mentioned, resembling delicate and silky white cobwebs, generally of stringy forms, floating in the air.]

جَارِيَةٌ لَعُوبٌ A playful, sportive, or gamesome, damsel: (S:) one who coquets prettily, with affected coyness: (K:) pl. لَعَائِبُ. (TA.) See also لَعِبٌ.

لَعَّابٌ One whose business or occupation is playing, gaming, or the like; a player by profession. (TA.) See also لَعِبٌ.

لَاعِبٌ Playing, sporting, gaming, jesting, or joking. (TA.) See also لَعِبٌ. b2: لَا يَأْخُذَنَّ

أَحَدُكُمْ مَتَاعَ أَخِيهِ لَاعِبًا جَادًّــا [By no means shall any one of you take the property of his brother in play (and) in earnest]: by this is meant taking a thing without meaning to steal it, but meaning to vex and anger the owner; so that the taker is in play with respect to theft, but in earnest in annoying. (TA, from a trad.) b3: إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ لَاعِبٌ [Thou art only playing]: said to anyone who does what is unprofitable. (TA.) أُلْعُوبَةٌ A thing with which one plays (Mz, 40th نوع.) مَلْعَبٌ A place of playing, sporting, gaming, or the like; a place where plays, games, or sports, are performed: (S, K:) pl. مَلَاعِبُ. (TA.) b2: مَلَاعِبُ الرِّيحِ [pl. (tropical:) The sporting-places of the wind;] places where the wind blows, or has blown, vehemently: syn. مَدَارِجُهَا. (K.) b3: تَرَكْتُهُ فِى

(K.) مُلَعِّبٌ [Exuding mucilage]; applied to a plant: likened to a foolish person slavering: (TA, in art. حمق.) [See البَقْلَةُ الحَمْقَاءُ in art. حمق.]

مُلَاعِبُ ظِلِّهِ A certain bird; (S, K;) found in the desert; (TA;) sometimes called خَاطِفُ ظِلِّهِ, (S, Msb,) [see art. خطف,] because of the swiftness with which it pounces down: it has a green (or gray, أَخْضَر,) back, white belly, long wings, and short neck. (Msb.) Of two you say مُلَاعِبَا ظِلَّيْهِمَا; and of three, مُلَاعِبَاتُ أَظْلَالِهِنَّ; because the appellation becomes determinate. (TA. [But see ظِلٌّ.]) ثَغْرٌ مَلْعُوبٌ Teeth, or fore teeth, &c., having slaver or drivel, upon or about them. 1 عَجِبَ مِنْهُ, (S, O, Msb, K,) [and لَهُ, as shown by what follows,] aor. ـَ inf. n. عَجَبٌ; (Msb, TA;) and منه ↓ تعجّب, and ↓ استعجب منه, (S, O, Msb, K,) which two are syn. each with the other, (S, O, K,) and with the first also; (S, K;) all signify He wondered at it; i. e. he deemed it strange, extraordinary, or improbable, said of a thing occurring, or presenting itself, to him; (K, TA;) on account of his being little accustomed to it: (TA:) or the first signifies [as above, i. e.] he deemed it strange, extraordinary, or improbable: and ↓ تَعَجُّبٌ is of two kinds; one is [the wondering] at a thing which one commends, and it means the accounting (a thing) good or goodly, or approving [it], and expressing one's approval of a thing; and the other is at a thing that one dislikes, and it means the deeming [a thing] strange, extraordinary, or improbable, and discommending [it]: (Msb:) or, accord. to some of the grammarians, it signifies the mind's becoming affected, or acted upon, by some excessive quality in the thing by which it is so affected; [so that it may be rendered the becoming affected with wonder;] as when one says مَا أَشْجَعَهُ [“ how courageous is he! ”] and أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ [“ how clearly shall they hear! and how clearly shall they see! ”]: (Msb, MF, TA:) or it is [the wondering] at a thing of which the cause, or reason, is hidden, and not known: or it is when one sees a thing that pleases him, and thinks that he has not seen the like of it: (L, TA:) [therefore تَعَجَّبَ مِنْهُ may be rendered he wondered at it, and he admired it:] accord. to some, it peculiarly relates to what is deemed good or goodly, or approved; [though this is inconsistent with the application of the grammatical term فِعْلُ التَّعَجُّبِ the verb of wonder;] and the subst. derived from it is ↓ عَجْبٌ: and ↓ استعجب relates to what is good or goodly or approved, and to what is otherwise; and the subst. is ↓ عَجَبٌ [which is also the inf. n. of عَجِبَ]: or accord. to the A and L, ↓ استعجب signifies he wondered at a thing intensely; or became affected with intense wonder. A3: Also The root, or base, of the tail: (S, O, K:) or the part of the root, or base, of the tail, of any beast, which the haunch encloses, (Msb, TA,) and which is inserted in the hinder part of the rump: (TA:) or the root, or base, and bone, of the tail: (Lh, TA:) also called the عُصْعُص [q. v.]: (Msb, TA:) or it is the head of the عُصْعُص: (TA:) or the upper part of the عُصْعُص: or the external extremity of the spine; and the عُصْعُص is its internal extremity: (Az, L voce قُحْقُحٌ:) it is said in a trad., that every part of a man will become consumed, except the عَجْب, (TA,) or the عَجْب of the tail, (O, TA,) accord. to different relations; (TA;) from which [as a rudiment] he was created, and upon which he will [at the resurrection] be put together: (O:) i. e. the bone at the lower, or lowest, part of the spine, at the rump; which is the عَسِيب of beasts: it is said to be like a grain of mustard-seed: or, as Z says in the “ Fáïk,” it is the bone that is between the buttocks: it is also pronounced ↓ عُجْبٌ; and accord. to MF, ↓ عِجْبٌ, but no one else says this: and, as El-Khafájee says, it is also called عَجْمٌ and عُجْمٌ and عِجْمٌ, in this case with the three vowel-sounds. (O.) يَا لَلْعَجَبِ [may be rendered O case of wonder! but properly] means O wonder come, for this is thy time: and يَا لِلْعَجَبِ [may also be rendered O case of wonder! but properly] means O [people, or the like, come] to wonder; the noun signifying the invoked being suppressed. (Har p. 27.) (TA.) and it signifies also The practiser of legerdemain, or sleight-of-hand; syn. الشَّعْوَذِىُّ, (A, TA,) or المُشَعْوِذُ: (Eth-Tha'álibee, TA in شعذ:) and any one who does wonderful things. (A, TA.) And a poet says, يَا عَجَبًا لِلدَّهْرِ ذِى الأَعْجَابِ [for يَا أَعْجَبُ عَجَبًا O, I wonder greatly, lit. with wondering, at fortune that is ever attended with wonders]. (TA.) A3: Also The quality, in a she-camel, that is denoted by the epithet عَجْبَآءُ [fem. of أَعْجَبُ, q. v.]; and so ↓ عُجْبَةٌ. (O.) عُجْبَةٌ: see the last preceding sentence.

أَعَاجِيبُ seems to be pl. of أُعْجُوبَةٌ, like as أَحَادِيثُ is pl. of أُحْدُوثَةُ: (S, O:) and ↓ تَعَاجِيبُ signifies wonderful things; syn. عَجَائِبُ; (S, O, K;) and is a word [of a rare form, (see تَبَاشِيرُ,)] having no proper sing., (S, O,) like تَعَاشِيبُ; (O;) erroneously thought by the author of the “ Námoos ”

[on the Kámoos] to be most probably a mistake for أَعَاجِيبُ: (TA:) a poet says, وَمَنْ تَعَاجِيبِ خَلْقِ اللّٰهِ غَاطِيَةٌ يُعْصَرُ مِنْهَا مُلَاحِىٌّ وَغِرْبِيبُ [And of the wonderful things of God's creation is a grape-vine covering the ground (so غَاطِيَةٌ is expl. by IB), whereof grapes of the kinds called ملاحىّ and غربيب are pressed for making wine]. عَجَبٌ عَاجِبٌ [meaning Very wonderful or admirable or pleasing] (S, O, K) is like لَيْلٌ لَائِلٌ, the latter word being a corroborative of the former; (S, O;) and one says also [in like manner] ↓ عَجَبٌ عُجَابٌ. (K.) أَعْجَبُ [More, and most, wonderful or admirable or pleasing]. b2: [And the fem.] عَجْبَآءُ signifies A female wondered at for her beauty: and also, for her ugliness. (O, K.) مُعْجَبٌ بِنَفْسِهِ, and بِرَأْيِهِ, [Admiring himself, (lit. excited to admiration by himself,) or pleased with himself, and his opinion, or judgment; selfconceited, and conceited of his opinion or judgment,] (S, O, TA,) [or] vain, or proud, [thereof; for]

مُعْجَبٌ signifies a man vain, or proud, of what proceeds from him, whether good or bad, and of himself, or of a thing [belonging to him, such as his dress or wealth &c.]: but Er-Rághib makes a distinction between مُعْجَبٌ and تَائِهٌ; saying that the معجب believes himself with respect to the opinion or judgment that he forms of himself indecisively from evidence outweighed in probability; [so that it rather denotes conceit than vanity;] whereas the تائه believes himself decisively. (MF, TA.) مُعْجِبٌ [Inducing wonder, or admiration, &c.]: see عَجَبٌ, in the middle of the paragraph: [or] a thing that is very good or goodly or beautiful. (TA.)

1 عَبَدَ اللّٰهَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. عِبَادَةٌ (IKtt, L, Msb, &c.) and عُبُودَةٌ and عُبُودِيَّةٌ (IKtt) and مَعْبَدٌ and مَعْبَدَةٌ, (L,) He served, worshipped, or adored, God; rendered to Him religious service, worship, or adoration: (L:) or he obeyed God: (IKtt:) or he obeyed God with humility or submissiveness; rendered to Him humble, or submissive, obedience: (IAth, L, Msb:) [or, inf. n. عِبَادَةٌ, he did what God approved: and, inf. n. عُبُودَةٌ, he approved what God did: (see the former of these ns. below:)] the verb is used in these senses only when the object is God, or a false god, or the Devil. (TA.) A2: عَبَدْتُ بِهِ أُوذِيهِ I was excited against him to annoy, molest, harm, or hurt, him. (O, K.) b2: And مَا عَبَدَكَ عَنِّى What has withheld thee from me? (IAar, L.) A3: عَبُدَ, aor. ـُ inf. n. عُبُودَةٌ and عُبُودِيَّةٌ, accord. to Lh and IKtt, but A'Obeyd held that there is no verb to these two ns., He was, or became, a slave, or in a state of slavery: or he was, or became, in a state of slavery, his fathers having been so before him; as also ↓ عُبِّدَ. (L.) b2: Lth read [in the Kur v. 65] وَعَبُدَ الطَّاغُوتُ; explaining the meaning to be, Et-Tághoot having become an object of worship; and saying that عَبُدَ, here, is a verb similar to ظَرُفَ and فَقُهَ: but Az says that in this he has committed a mistake. (L.) A4: عَبِدَ, aor. ـَ inf. n. عَبَدٌ (and عَبَدَةٌ, or this is a simple subst., L), He was, or became, angry; (Fr, S, O, * L, Msb, K;) [and so ↓ تعبّد, in the Deewán of Jereer, accord. to Freytag;] like أَبِدَ and أَمِدَ and أَحِنَ: (Fr:) and he was long angry. (L.) You say, عَبِدَ عَلَيْهِ He was angry with him. (Fr.) And ElFarezdak makes it trans. without a prep., saying يَعْبَدُنِى. (L.) b2: He disdained, or scorned. (Az, S, O, L.) El-Farezdak says, وَأَعْبَدُ أَنْ أَهْجُو كُلَيْبًا بِدَارِمِ [And I disdain to satirize Kuleyb with Dárim: the former being unworthy to be coupled with the latter even as an object of satire]. (S, O, L.) [See also عَبِدٌ.] b3: He denied, disacknowledged, or disallowed. (O, K.) [See, again, عَبِدٌ.] b4: He repented, and blamed himself, (O, K, TA,) for having been remiss, or having fallen short of doing what he ought to have done. (TA.) b5: He mourned, grieved, or was sorrowful. (L.) b6: He was covetous; or inordinately, or culpably, desirous. (O, K.) And عَبِدَ بِهِ He clave, or kept, to it, or him, inseparably. (L.) b7: And, (O, L, K,) said of a camel, (L,) He was, or became, affected with mange, or scab: (L:) or with incurable mange or scab: (O, L:) or with severe mange or scab. (K.) 2 عبّدهُ, (S, * A, O, ast; Msb, K, *) inf. n. تَعْبِيدٌ; (S, O, K;) and ↓ اعبدهُ, (S, A, O, K,) inf. n. إِعْبَادٌ; (S;) and ↓ تعبّدهُ, and ↓ اعتبدهُ, (S, O, K,) and ↓ استعبدهُ; (S, * O, * Msb, K; *) He made him, or took him as, a slave; he enslaved him: (S, A, O, Msb, K:) or عبّدهُ and ↓ اعبدهُ (TA) and ↓ تعبّدهُ and ↓ اعتبدهُ (A) he made him to be as a slave to him. (A, TA.) See also 1, former half. You say [also] الطَّمَعُ ↓ استعبدهُ Covetousness made him a slave. (A.) And فُلَانًا ↓ أَعْبَدَنِى He made me to posses such a one as a slave: (A, O, Msb, K:) so accord. to Lth: but Az says that the meaning of أَعْبَدْتُ فُلَانًا as commonly known to the lexicologists is اِسْتَعْبَدْتُهُ: he adds, however, that he does not deny the meaning assigned by Lth if it can be verified. (L.) مُحَرَّرًا ↓ اِعْتَبَدَ, occurring in a trad., or as some relate it, ↓ أَعْبَدَ, means He took an emancipated man as a slave: i. e. he emancipated a slave, and then concealed the act from him, or confined him, and made him to serve him by force; or he took a freeman, and pretended that he was a slave, and took possession of him by force. (L.) b2: عبّدهُ also signifies He brought him under, (namely, a man,) subdued him, or rendered him submissive, so that he did the work of slaves. (Az, TA.) عبّد, inf. n. as above, is syn. with ذَلَّلَ. (S, O.) [And hence it has also the following significations, among others indicated by explanations of its pass. part. n. below. b3: He rendered a camel submissive, or tractable. b4: And He beat, or trod, a road, or path, so as to make it even, or easy to walk or ride upon.]

A2: عبّد [as intrans.], inf. n. as above, He departed, taking fright, and running away, or going away at random: (O, K:) or he hastened, or went quickly. (TA.) And عبّد يَعْدُو He hastened time after time, running. (TA.) b2: مَا عَبَّدَ أَنْ فَعَلَ ذَاكَ, (inf. n. as above, S,) He delayed not, or was not slow, to do, or in doing, that. (S, O, K. *) 4 اعبد as trans.: see 2, former half, in four places.

A2: اعبدوا They collected themselves together; assembled together. (K.) b2: اعبد القَوْمُ بِالرَّجُلِ The people, or party, beat the man: (O, K:) or collected themselves together and beat him. (TA.) A3: أُعْبِدَ بِهِ His riding-camel became fatigued: (S, O, K:) or perished; or flagged, or became powerless; or stopped with him: (S, O:) or died, or became ill, or went away, so that he was obliged to stop: (L:) i. q. أُبْدِعَ بِهِ [q. v.], (S, O, L, K,) from which it is formed by transposition. (TA.) 5 تعبّد He became, or made himself, a servant of God; devoted himself to religious services or exercises; applied himself to acts of devotion. (S, A, O, L, Msb, K.) And تعبّد بِالْإِسْلَامِ He became, or made himself, a servant of God by [following the religion of] El-Islám; [i. e. he followed El-Islám as his religion;] syn. ذَانَ بِهِ. (Msb in art. دين.) A2: Also, He (a camel) became refractory, and difficult to manage, (K,) like a wild animal. (L.) b2: See also عَبِدَ, first sentence.

A3: تعبّدهُ: see 2, first sentence, in two places. b2: Also He called him, or invited him, to obedience. (Msb.) عَبْدٌ, originally an epithet, but used as a subst., (Sb, TA,) A male slave; (S, A, O, L, Msb, K;) i. q. مَمْلُوكٌ; (L, K;) [but عَبْدٌ is now generally applied to a male black slave; and مَمْلُوكٌ, to a male white slave; and this distinction has long obtained;] contr. of حُرٌّ; (S, A, O, L, Msb;) as also ↓ عَبْدَلٌ, (L, K,) in which the ل is augmentative: (L:) and a servant, or worshipper, of God, and of a false god, or of the Devil: (Lth, L, &c.:) [you say عَبْدُ اللّٰهِ and عَبْدُ الشَّمْسِ &c.: see also عَابِدٌ, which signifies the same; and see the remarks in this paragraph on the pls. عَبِيدٌ and عِبَادٌ and عَبَدَةٌ &c.:] and a man, or human being; (M, A, L, K;) as being a bondman (مَرْبُوبٌ) to his Creator; (L;) applied to a male and to a female; (Ibn-Hazm, TA;) whether free or a slave: (K:) pl. أَعْبُدٌ (S, O, Msb, K) and أَعْبِدَةٌ and أَعْبَادٌ, (IKtt, TA,) [all pls. of pauc.,] of which the first is the most commonly known, (Msb,) and ↓ عَبِيدٌ and عِبَادٌ, (S, O, Msb, K,) which two and the first are the most commonly known of all the many pls. of عَبْدٌ, (Msb,) عَبِيدٌ being like كَلِيبٌ as pl. of كَلْبٌ, a rare form of pl.; (S, O;) or, accord. to some, it is a quasipl. n.; accord. to Ibn-Málik, فَعِيلٌ occurs as a pl. measure, but sometimes they use it in the manner of a pl. and make it fem., as in the instance of عَبِيدٌ, and sometimes they use it in the manner of quasi-pl. ns. and make it masc., as in the instances of حَجِيجٌ and كَلِيبٌ; (MF;) [accord. to the general and more approved opinion, it is a quasi-pl. n., and therefore fem. and masc., but most commonly fem.;] and further it should be remarked that the common people agree in making a difference between عَبِيدٌ and عِبَادٌ, by the former meaning slaves [and by the latter meaning servants of God and also simply, with the article ال, mankind], saying, هٰؤُلَآءِ عَبِيدٌ these are slaves, and هٰذَا عَبْدٌ مِنْ عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ [this is a servant, of the servants of God]: (Az, L:) [and a distinction is also made between عِبَادٌ and عَبَدَةٌ, respecting which see what follows:] other pls. of عَبْدٌ are عُبْدَانٌ, (S, O, K,) like تُمْرَانٌ pl. of تَمْرٌ, (S, O,) and عِبْدَانٌ, (S, O, K,) like جِحْشَانٌ pl. of جَحْشٌ, (S, O,) and عُبُدٌ, (S, O, K,) like سُقُفٌ pl. of سَقْفٌ, (S, O,) or this is pl. of عَبِيدٌ, like رُغُفٌ pl. of رَغِيفٌ, (Zj,) and is also a pl. of عَابِدٌ, (L,) and some read [in the Kur v. 65] عُبُدَ الطَّاغُوتِ, (Akh, S, O,) and عُبْدٌ (MF) and عُبُودٌ and عُبَّدٌ and عُبَّادٌ and عَبَدَةٌ, (IKtt, TA,) the last three of which are also pls. of عَابِدٌ: (L:) one says of the worshippers of a plurality of gods, هُمْ عَبَدَةُ الطَّاغُوتِ [they are the servants of Et-Tághoot]; but the Muslims one calls عِبَادُ اللّٰهِ, meaning the servants, or worshippers, of God: (Lth, L:) [all these are pls. in the proper sense of the term, of the broken class:] and عَبْدُونَ, (O, K,) a pl. of the sound class, adopted because عَبْدٌ is originally an epithet: (TA:) and [the following, with the exception of the first, and of some which are particularized as being pls. of pls., are also said to be pls., but are properly speaking quasi-pl. ns., namely,] ↓ عَبُدٌ, (O, K,) accord. to some, who read [in the Kur ubi suprà] عَبُدَ الطَّاغُوتِ, making the former a prefixed noun, as meaning the servants (خَدَم) of Et-Tághoot; but it is a n. of the measure فَعُلٌ, like حَذُرٌ and نَدُسٌ, not a pl.; the meaning being the servant (خَادِم) of Et-Tághoot; (Akh, S, O;) and it is also used by poetic license for عَبْدٌ; (Fr, T, S, O;) and ↓ عِبِدَّانٌ and ↓ عِبِدَّآءُ and ↓ عِبِدَّى; (S, O, K;) or, accord. to some, the last of these signifies slaves born in a state of slavery; and the female is termed ↓ عَبْدَةٌ; and Lth says that ↓ عِبِدَّى signifies a number of slaves born in a state of slavery, generation after generation; but Az says that this is a mistake, that عِبِدَّى اللّٰهِ signifies the same as عبَادُ اللّٰهِ, that it is thus used in a trad., and that عِبِدَّى is applied in another trad. to poor men of the class called أَهْلُ الصُّفَّة; (L;) and ↓ عُبُدَّآءُ and ↓ عِبِدَّةٌ and ↓ عِبَادٌّ (IKtt, TA) and ↓ مَعْبَدَةٌ, like مَشْيَخَةٌ, (T, O, K,) and ↓ مَعْبُودَآءُ (Yaakoob, S, O, K) and ↓ مَعْبُودَى, (IKtt, TA,) and [pl. pl.] ↓ مَعَابِدُ, (O, K,) said to be pl. of مَعْبَدَةٌ; (TA;) and pl. pl. أَعَابِدُ, (K,) pl. of أَعْبُدٌ; (TA;) and عَبِيدُونَ, (Es-Suyootee, MF,) app. pl. of ↓ عَبِيدٌ. (MF.) فَادْخُلِى فِى عِبَادِى, in the Kur lxxxix. 29, means Then enter thou among my righteous servants: (Ksh, Bd, Jel:) or it means فِى حِزْبِى [among my peculiar party]. (S, O.) b2: Also (tropical:) Ignoble, or base-born; like as حُرٌّ is used to signify “ generous,” “ noble,” or “ well-born. ” (Mgh in art. حر.) A2: Also A certain plant, of sweet odour, (O, K, TA,) of which the camels are fond because it makes the milk to become plentiful, and fattens; it is sharp, or hot, (حَادّ O, or حَارّ TA,) in temperament; and when they depasture it they become thirsty, and seek the water: (O, TA:) so says IAar. (O.) A3: And A short and broad نَصْل [or arrow-head, or spear-head, or blade]. (AA, O, * K.) عَبَدٌ: see عَابِدٌ.

عَبِدٌ and ↓ عَابِدٌ (but the latter is rarely used, Ibn-'Arafeh) Angry. (L.) And (both words) Disdaining, or disdainful; scorning, or scornful. (L.) Accord. to AA, العَابِدِينَ in the words of the Kur [xliii. 81], إِنْ كَانَ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ وَلَدٌ فَأَنَا أَوَّلُ

↓ العَابِدِينَ, means The disdainers, or scorners, and the angry: (S, * L:) but Ibn-'Arafeh rejects this assertion: (TA:) these words are variously explained; as meaning There is not to the Compassionate a son; and I am the first of the angry disdainers or scorners of the assertion that there is: or, and I am the first of the deniers of this assertion: or, and I am the first of the worshippers of God according to the unitarian doctrine, or, of the worshippers of God of this people: or if there were to the Compassionate a son, I would be the first of his worshippers: or if there be to the Compassionate a son, I am the first of worshippers; but I am not the first worshipper of God: or, accord. to Az, the best interpretation is one ascribed to Mujáhid; i. e. if there be to the Compassionate a son in your opinion, I am the first of those who have worshipped God alone, and who have thus charged you with uttering a falsehood in this your assertion. (L.) عَبْدَةٌ: see عَبْدٌ, latter half.

عَبَدَةٌ [as a subst. from عَبِدَ (q. v.), Anger. b2: ] Disdain, or scorn; (S, O, L, K;) disdain occasioned by a saying at which one is ashamed, and from which one abstains through scorn and pride: (L:) or intense disdain or scorn. (A.) b3: Strength: so in the saying مَا لِثَوْبِكَ عَبَدَةٌ [There is not any strength to thy garment]. (S, O.) b4: Strength and fatness: (S, O, K:) thus in the phrase نَاقَةٌ ذَاتُ عَبَدَةٍ [A she-camel possessing strength and fatness]. (S, O.) And one says [also] نَاقَةٌ عَبَدَةٌ [if this be not a mistake for the phrase here next preceding] meaning A strong she-camel. (L, Msb.) b5: And Lastingness, or continuance; syn. بَقَآءٌ; (O, L, K, TA;) in some lexicons نَقَآءٌ; (TA;) and strength. (L.) One says, لَيْسَ لِثَوْبِكَ عَبَدَةٌ meaning There is not to thy garment any lastingness, or continuance, and strength. (Lh, L.) A2: Also A stone with which perfume is bruised, or pounded. (O, L, K.) عَبْدِىٌّ [a rel. n. from عَبْدٌ]. الدَّرَاهِمُ العَبْدِيَّةُ Certain Dirhems, which were superior to those of late times, and of greater weight. (O, K, TA.) عَبْدِيَّةٌ, as a subst.: see عِبَادَةٌ: b2: and عُبُودِيَّةٌ.

عَبْدَلِّىٌّ and عَبْدَلَّاوِىٌّ [both post-classical, the latter, which is the more common, said by Forskål to be an appellation of the Cucumis chate, which is app. from قِثَّآء, denoting several species of cucumber; but it is] a sort of melon, [abounding in Egypt, of little flavour, eaten with sugar,] said to be thus called in relation to 'AbdAllah Ibn-Táhir, a governor of Egypt on the part of El-Ma-moon. عَبِيدٌ: see عَبْدٌ, first and last quarters.

عُبَيْدٌ [dim. of عَبْدٌ. b2: And, used as a proper name,] The son of the desert, or of the waterless desert: thus expl. by El-Kanánee to Fr. (O.) b3: And [hence] أُمُّ عُبَيْدٍ The desert, or waterless desert, (Fr, O, K,) that is vacant, or desolate: (K:) or the land that is vacant, or desolate: (El-Kaná- nee, Fr, O:) or the land that the rain has missed. (O, K.) And sometimes it is used as meaning (assumed tropical:) Great calamity: (TA:) it is said in a prov., وَقَعُوا فِى أُمِّ عُبَيْدٍ تَصَايَحُ حَيَّاتُهَا [for تَتَصَايَحُ, lit. They became, or found themselves, in the desert, &c., of which the serpents were hissing, one at another], meaning (assumed tropical:) [they fell] into a great calamity. (Meyd, TA.) عِبَادَةٌ (S, IKtt, A, IAth, L, K) and ↓ عُبُودِيَّةٌ and ↓ عُبُودَةٌ (IKtt, K) and ↓ عَبْدِيَّةٌ (Fr, K) and ↓ مَعْبَدٌ and ↓ مَعْبَدَةٌ (L) [all said by some to be inf. ns., except the fourth,] Religious service, worship, adoration, or devotion; (L;) obedience: (S, IKtt, A, K:) obedience with humility or submissiveness; humble, or submissive, obedience: (IAth, L:) or عِبَادَةٌ signifies the Doing what God approves: and ↓ عُبُودَةٌ, the approving what God does: and the primary signification of ↓ عُبَودِيَّةٌ is humility, and submissiveness: (S, A, O:) عِبَادَةٌ is rendered only to God, or a false god, or the Devil. العُبَيْدَةُ The [portion, or appertenance, of the stomach, of a ruminant, called] فَحِث, (O, K, TA,) also called حَفِث [q. v.]. (TA.) عُبُودِيَّةٌ The state, or condition, of a slave; slavery; servitude; (S, O, L, Msb;) as also ↓ عُبُودَةٌ (S, O, L) and ↓ عَبْدِيَّةٌ (O, Msb) and ↓ تَعْبِيدَةٌ. عَبَادِيدُ and عَبَابِيدُ, each a pl. having no sing., Parties of people (S, O, K) going in every direction: (S, O:) and horsemen going in every direction. (K.) One says, صَارَ القَوْمُ عَبَادِيدَ and عَبَابِيدَ The people became divided into parties going in every direction. (S, O.) And ذَهَبُوا عَبَادِيدَ and عَبَابِيدَ They went away in parties in every direction. (TA.) b2: Also (both words, K, or the latter [only], TA,) Far-extending roads: (K:) or diverse and far-extending roads: said to be used in this sense not with respect to coming, but only with respect to dispersion, and going away. (TA.) b3: Also (or the former [only], TA) Hills such as are called إِكَام or آكَام [pls. of أَكَمَةٌ]. (K, TA.) b4: And one says, مَرَّ رَاكِبًا عَبَادِيدَهُ He passed, or went away, riding upon the extremities of his buttocks. (S, O.) عَابِدٌ A server, a worshipper, or an adorer, of God: (L:) an obeyer of God with humility, or submissiveness: (L, Msb:) [a devotee:] a unitarian: (L:) by a secondary application, used of him who takes for his god other than the True God, such as an idol, and the sun, &c.: (Msb:) pl. عُبَّادٌ and عَبَدَةٌ (L, Msb) and عُبُدٌ and عُبَّدٌ, all of which are also pls. of عَبْدٌ [q. v.]: (L:) [and quasi-pl. n. ↓ عَبَدٌ (like as خَدَمٌ is of خَادِمٌ), accord. to a reading of a phrase in the Kur v. 65, as expl. by some.] b2: And A servant: a meaning said to be tropical. مِعْبَدٌ A shovel, or spade, of iron; syn. مِسْحَاةٌ: (K:) pl. مَعَابِدُ. (TA.) مَعْبَدَةٌ, and the pl. مَعَابِدُ: see عَبْدٌ, last quarter: A2: and for the former see also عِبَادَةٌ.

مُعَبَّدٌ, applied to a camel, Rendered submissive, or tractable; broken, or trained; syn. مُذَلَّلٌ: (A, L:) or anointed with tar, (S, O, K,) and rendered submissive, or tractable: (S, O:) or whose whole skin is anointed with tar: (Sh:) or mangy, or scabby, whose fur has fallen off by degrees, and which is set apart from the other camels to be anointed with tar: or rendered submissive by the mange, or scab: or affected with the mange, or scab; or with incurable mange or scab. (L. [And, applied to a camel, it has other meanings, which see in what follows.]) [And hence, app.,] سَفِينَةٌ مُعَبَّدَةٌ A ship, or boat, tarred: (AO, S, O, L, K:) or smeared with fat, or oil. (AO, L.) b2: Applied to a road, Beaten; syn. مُذَلَّلٌ; (S, A, O, K;) trodden; (Az, TA;) or travelled by many passengers going to and fro: (TA:) and syn. with مُذَلَّلٌ as applied to other things also. (K.) b3: And [hence] A wooden pin, peg, or stake. (Az, O, K, TA. [In the CK, المُؤَتَّدُ is erroneously put for الوَتِدُ.]) So in the following verse of Ibn-Mukbil: وَضَمَّنْتُ أَرْسَانَ الجِيَادِ مُعَبَّدًا

إِذَا مَا ضَرَبْنَا رَأْسَهُ لَا يُرَنَّحُ [And I made a wooden peg to be a guarantee for the ropes of the coursers: when we beat its head, it did not wabble]. (Az, O, TA.) b4: Also Honoured, or treated with honour, (L, K,) and served; applied to a camel. (L.) Thus it has two contr. significations. (K.) b5: And A camel left unridden. (O, L.) b6: And, applied to a stallion [camel], Excited by lust, or by vehement lust. عقد

1 عَقَدَ الحَبْلَ, (S, Mgh, L, Msb, K, &c.,) aor. ـِ (L, Msb, K,) inf. n. عَقْدٌ (Mgh, L, Msb) and تَعْقَادٌ [of which see an ex. in a verse cited voce رَتَمٌ, and which is properly an intensive or a frequentative form]; and ↓ عقّدهُ [which is also intensive or frequentative, inf. n. تَعْقِيدٌ]; and ↓ اعتقدهُ; (L;) He tied the cord, or rope; knit it; complicated it so as to form a knot or knots; tied it in a knot or knots; tied it firmly, fast, or strongly; contr. of حَلَّهُ; (L;) syn. شَدَّهُ: (K:) the etymologists assert that the primary signification of عَقْدٌ is the contr. of حَلٌّ: that it was afterwards used in relation to sales, or bargains, contracts, &c.: and then, in relation to a firm determination of the mind. أَيْمَانُكُمْ, or ↓ عَقَّدَتْ, or ↓ عَاقَدَتْ, accord. to different readings, in the Kur [iv. 37], by the verb is meant ratification; and by ايمانكم, your oaths, or your right hands: (L:) [i. e., accord. to the first and second readings, the meaning is, and those whose contracts, or the like, (عُهُودَهُمْ being understood,) your oaths, or your right hands, have ratified: and accord. to the third reading, and those with whom (هُمْ being understood) your oaths, or your right hands have ratified a contract, or the like.] One says also, عَقَدَ عَلَيْهِمْ عُقُودًا He imposed upon them obligations. (L.) And عَقَدَ الجِزْيَةَ فِى عُنُقِهِ He imposed upon himself the obligation to pay the [tax called] جزية. (L, from a trad.) And عَقَدْتُ عَلَيْهِ فِى كَذَا, and فى كذا ↓ عَاقَدْتُهُ, I obliged him to do such a thing, by taking, or exacting, from him an engagement, or a security. (L.) عَقَدَ قَلْبَهُ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ [He settled, or determined, his heart, or mind, firmly upon the thing; (see the first sentence of this art.; and see also عَزَمَ;)] he held, adhered, or clave, to the thing [with his heart, or mind; he knit his heart to it]. (Mgh, * Msb.) Also, [without any objective complement expressed,] He bought what is termed عُقْدَة, i. e. an estate, or a property, consisting in land or houses. (L.) b5: And اعتقد أَخًا فِى اللّٰهِ He adopted a brother in God. (A.) b6: اعتقد الدُّرَّ, and الخَرَزَ, He made the pearls, and the beads, into a necklace; and in like manner, other things. (L.) A2: اعتقد said of a date-stone, (A,) or other thing, (S, O, L,) [as also ↓ انعقد, which frequently occurs in the lexicons &c. in the sense here following,] It became hard. (L.) b3: And accord. to Ibn-Buzurj, اعتقد signifies He (a man) closed, or locked, a door upon himself, when in want, that he might die: (O:) thus Sh found in the Book of Ibn-Buzurj, i. e. اعتقد, with ق: (TA in art. عفد:) but others say that it is اعتفد, with ف: (O:) [or] اعتقد and اعتفد signify the same. (K.) 10 استعقدت She (a sow) desired the male. (O, K.) عَقْدٌ [as an inf. n.: see 1. b2: See also أُخْذَةٌ, which is syn. with the inf. n. تَأْخِيذٌ. b3: As a simple subst.,] see عُقْدَةٌ, third sentence. b4: Also A contract, a compact, a covenant, an agreement, a league, a treaty, or an engagement: (Mgh, O, L, K:) pl. عُقُودٌ. Agreeably with this explanation, the pl. is used in the Kur v. 1, as meaning Contracts, &c.: or it there means the obligatory statutes, or ordinances, of God: or, accord. to Zj, the covenants imposed by God, and those imposed mutually by men agreeably with the requirements of religion. (L.) And ↓ مَعَاقِدُ is used in the sense of عُقُودٌ: thus one says, بَيْنَهُمْ مَعَاقِدُ [Between them are contracts, compacts, &c.]. عِقْدٌ A necklace; (S, O, Msb, K;) a string upon which beads are strung: (L, TA:) pl. عُقُودٌ: (O, L, Msb, K:) and ↓ مِعْقَادٌ signifies a string upon which beads are strung and which is hung upon the neck of a boy; (O, L, K;) as does عِقْدٌ also: (TA:) and ↓ عُقْدَةٌ, likewise, signifies a kind of necklace. (L.) عَقَدٌ [as an inf. n.: see 1, last four sentences. b2: Also] A twisting in the tail of a sheep or goat, as though it were knotted, or tied in a knot. (L.) عُقْدَة is perfectly decl. as a name for any fruitful land, and is imperfectly decl. as a proper name of a particular land (O, K) abounding with palmtrees. (O.) Also Herbage, or pasturage, sufficient for camels: (O, K:) or a place abounding with herbage, or pasturage, sufficient for cattle. (TA.) And Pasturage such as is termed جَنْبَة, (O, L, K, [in the CK جَنَبَة, and in my MS. copy of the K جُنْبَة,]) remaining from the next preceding year; also termed عُرْوَةٌ: (O, L:) or remains of pasturage: (L:) pl. عُقَدٌ (O, L) and عِقَادٌ. (L.) And accord. to the copies of the K, it signifies also Camels, or cattle, that are constrained to feed upon trees: but [this is evidently a mistake; for] it is said in the L, [as also in the O,] sometimes camels, or cattle, are constrained to feed upon trees, and these [trees] are termed عُقْدَة and عُرْوَة; but while the جَنْبَة exists, the trees are not termed عُقْدَة nor عُرْوَة. (TA.) b3: Also Anything whereby a man feels himself to be well established, and whereon he relies; from the same word signifying “ a garden of many palmtrees, surrounded by a wall; ” because, when a man has this, he considers his condition to be well established: (L, TA:) or a thing, (K, TA,) or an estate consisting of land or of land and a house &c., (عَقَارٌ, O,) in which is a sufficiency for a man: (O, K, TA:) pl. عُقَدٌ. (TA.) A3: See also عِقْدٌ.

عَقَدَةٌ The root of the tongue; (O, K;) as also عَكَدَةٌ [q. v.]; (O;) i. e. the thick part thereof. (TA.) b2: Also n. un. of عَقَدٌ as applied to sand. (S, O, L, K. [See عَقِدٌ.]) عَقِدَةٌ n. un. of عَقِدٌ [q. v.] as applied to sand. (S, O, L, K.) عَقَدَانٌ A species, or sort, of dates; (O, L, K; *) as also ↓ عَقَدٌ. (L.) عَقِيدٌ i. q. ↓ مُعَاقِدٌ, (S, O, K,) One who unites, or joins, in a contract, a compact, a covenant, an agreement, a league, a treaty, or an engagement: (K, TA:) a confederate. (TA.) One says, هُوَ عَقِيدُ الكَرَمِ and اللُّؤْمِ [He is bound by nature to generosity and to meanness]: (S, O, K:) the former is said of him who is by nature generous; and the latter, of him who is by nature mean. (TK.) b2: Also, (S, M, A, O,) and ↓ مُعْقَدٌ, (M,) and ↓ مُعَقَّدٌ, (A,) applied to rob, (S, M, A,) and honey, (M, A, O,) and the like, (S, M, A,) Thick, or thickened, or inspissated. (S, M, A, O. *) عَقِيدَةٌ [A doctrine, or the like, upon which one's mind is firmly settled or determined; or to which one holds, adheres, or cleaves, with the heart, or mind; a belief, or firm belief or persuasion; a creed; an article of belief; a religious tenet; i. e.]

مَا يَدِينُ الإِنْسَانُ بِهِ: (Msb:) [see اِعْتَقَدَ كَذَا, in connection with which it is mentioned in the Msb: pl. عَقَائِدُ: and ↓ مُعْتَقَدٌ signifies the same as عَقِيدَةٌ; pl. مُعْتَقَدَاتٌ: so too does ↓ اِعْتِقَادٌ, an inf. n. used in the sense of a pass. part. n.; pl. اِعْتِقَادَاتٌ.] One says, لَهُ عَقِيدَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ [He has a good belief]; meaning he has an عقيدة free from doubt. (Msb.) [See also مَعْقُودٌ.]

عَاقِدٌ A she-camel that has confessed herself to have conceived; (S, O, K;) or that has closed her vulva upon the sperma of the stallion; (L;) for she then twists her tail as if tying it in a knot, and it is thereby known that she has conceived: (S, O, L:) and a she-camel twisting her tail as if tying it in a knot, (L,) or that has so twisted her tail, (O,) on the occasion of her conceiving; (O, L;) in order that it may be known that she has conceived: (O:) pl. عَوَاقِدُ. (L.) b2: And A she-gazelle having the end of her tail twisted [as if tied in a knot]: or bending her neck in lying down: or raising her head in fear for herself and her young one. (L.) And A gazelle putting his neck upon his rump, (O, L,) having bent it to sleep: (TA:) or having put his neck upon his rump: (K:) pl. as above. (O, L.) b3: And one says, جَآءَ عَاقِدًا عُنُقَهُ, meaning He came twisting his neck by reason of pride. (A, O, L.) b4: عَاقِدٌ is also applied as an epithet to أَقِط [q. v.] meaning That of which the water has gone, and which is thoroughly cooked. (AHát, TA voce كَثْءٌ.) A2: Also The [space called the] حَرِيم [q. v.] of a well; (S, M, O, K;) and what is around it, (مَا حَوْلَهُ, S, M, TA,) i. e. what is around the حريم: in the K [and O], ما حُوْلَهَا, i. e. what is around the well; but the former is the right. (TA.) عِنْقَادٌ: see what next follows.

عُنْقُودٌ and ↓ عِنْقَادٌ (S, O, L, Msb, K, &c.) A raceme, or bunch, (Mgh voce عِثْكَالٌ,) of grapes, (S, O, L, Msb, K,) and the like, (Msb,) as of dates, (Mgh ubi suprà, and ISh in art. ثفرق of the TA,) and of [the fruit of] the أَرَاك, and بُطْم, (O, K,) and the like: (K:) pl. عَنَاقِيدُ. (S, O, L, &c.) أَعْقَدُ A wolf, (O, L, K,) and a dog, and a ram, and any other animal, (L.) having a twisted tail [as though it were tied in a knot]: (O, L, K:) and [the fem.] عَقْدَآءُ, a sheep or goat (شَاة) having a twisted tail as though it were knotted or tied in a knot. (S, * L, K. *) And الأَعْقَدُ signifies The dog; (S, O, L, K;) a well-known name thereof; (S, O, L;) because of his tail's being twisted as though it were tied in a knot. (S, L.) b2: And A crooked tail. (L.) b3: And A stallion [app. of the camels] that raises his tail; which he does by reason of sprightliness. (L.) b4: And A he-goat having a twist, or a knot, in his horn. (L.) b5: For one of its meanings as an epithet applied to a dog, see عُقْدَةٌ, latter half. b6: Also, and ↓ عَقِدٌ, A man having an impediment in his tongue; unable to speak freely; tongue-tied. (S, * O, * L, K. *) b7: And لَئِيمٌ أَعْقَدُ A mean man, of difficult, or stubborn, disposition. (ISk, O, L.) b8: And [the fem.]

عَقْدَآءُ signifies A female slave. (AA, O, K.) مَعْقِدٌ The place of the عَقْد [or tying, &c.,] of a thing: (Msb:) pl. مَعَاقِدُ. (S, O: in which this is similarly explained.) مَعْقِدُ حَبْلٍ signifies The place of a cord, or rope, where it is tied, knit, or tied in a knot or knots. (L.) [Hence,] one says, هُوَ مِنِّى مَعْقِدَ الإِزَارِ [lit. He is, in respect of me, in the place of the tying of the waistwrapper], meaning he is near to me in station, standing, or grade: (S, O, L, K:) and in like manner, مَقْعَدَ القَابِلَةِ: (TA:) مَعْقِدَ الإِزَارِ being an adverbial phrase having a special application, but used as one not having such an application. (L.) b2: And A joint, an articulation, or a place of juncture between two bones. (L. [See also عُقْدَةٌ, in the latter part of the former half.]) b3: أَسْأَلُكَ بِمَعَاقِدِ العِزِّ مِنْ عَرْشِكَ i. e. I ask Thee by the properties wherein consists the title of thy throne to glory, or by the places wherein those properties are [as it were] knit together, properly meaning by the glory of thy throne, is a phrase used in prayer, of which, IAth says, the party of Aboo-Haneefeh disapprove. مُعْقَدٌ: see عَقِيدٌ.

مُعَقَدٌ [Tied in many knots]. One says خُيُوطٌ مُعَقَّدَةٌ [Threads, or strings, tied in many knots]: the latter word being with teshdeed to denote muchness, or multiplicity. (S, O, L.) b2: and [hence] applied to language, (S, O, L, K,) as meaning Rendered obscure: (S, O, L:) or [simply] obscure. (K.) b3: See also مَعْقُودٌ. b4: and see عَقِيد. b5: It also occurs in a trad. as meaning A sort of بُرْد, of the manufacture of Hejer. (L.) مُعَقِّدٌ [Tying a number of knots or many knots: as enchanters used to do. (See نَفَثَ.) b2: and hence,] An enchanter. (A, O, K.) مِعْقَادٌ: see عِقْدٌ.

مَعْقُودٌ A cord, or rope, tied, knit, complicated into a knot or knots, or tied firmly, fast, or strongly. (L.) الخَيْلُ مَعْقُودٌ فِى نَوَاصِيهَا الخَيْرُ, a saying occurring in a trad., means Good fortune cleaves to the forelocks of horses as though it were tied to them. (L.) b2: Also A sale, or bargain, and a contract, a compact, or the like, concluded, settled, confirmed, or ratified. (L.) b3: لَيْسَ لَهُ مَعْقُودٌ means رَأْىٍ ↓ ليس له عَقْدُ [i. e. He has not any settled, or determined, opinion or judgment]. (S, O, K.) b4: بِنَآءٌ مَعْقُودٌ A building, or structure, [arched, or vaulted, or] having arches, like those of [many] doorways; (A, O, K;) as also ↓ مُعَقَّدٌ. (A.) b5: مَعْقُودَةُ القَرَا: see عَقْدٌ.

مُعَاقِدٌ: see عَقِيدٌ.

مُعْتَقَدٌ: see عَقِيدَةٌ.

يَمِينٌ مُنْعَقِدَةٌ An oath to do, or to abstain from doing, a thing in the future. (KT.) يَعْقِيدٌ, asserted by some to be the only word in the language of the measure يَفْعِيلٌ except يَعْضِيدٌ, (O,) Honey thickened, or inspissated, (O, L, K,) by means of fire: (O, K:) and (as some say, L) food, or wheat, (طَعَام,) made thick with honey. (O, L, K.)
