[دفر] الدَفَرُ : النَتَنُ خَاصَّةً يقال: دَفْراً له، أي نَتْناً. ومنه قيل للدُنْيا: أُمُّ دَفْرٍ. والدَفْر وأمُّ دَفْرٍ من أسماء الدَواهي. ويقال للأمة إذا شُتِمت: يا دفار، مثل قطام، أي دفرة منتنة. وقول عمر رضي الله عنه: وادفراه ! أي وانَتْناهُ. ويقال: دَفْراً دافِراً لما يجئ به فلان، أي نَتْناً، وكذلك إذا قَبَّحْتَ عليه أمره.
