عن الفارسية من بغرا بمعنى الخنزير الوحشي، أو من بغرا بمعنى اسم ملك خوارزم ويدعي بغراخان، أو من بغار بمعنى الكبرياء الخيلاء والغرور؛ أو عن التركية من بغر بمعنى كبد وصدر، أو من بوغور بمعنى الجمل الجموح.

(بَغَرَ) الْبَاءُ وَالْغَيْنُ وَالرَّاءُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ، وَفِيهِ كَلِمَاتٌ مُتَقَارِبَةٌ فِي الشُّرْبِ وَمَعْنَاهُ. فَالْبَغَرُ أَنْ يَشْرَبَ الْإِنْسَانُ وَلَا يَرْوَى، وَهُوَ يُصِيبُ الْإِبِلَ أَيْضًا. وَعُيِّرَ رَجُلٌ فَقِيلَ: " مَاتَ أَبُوهُ بَشَمًا وَمَاتَتْ أُمُّهُ بَغَرًا ". وَيَقُولُونَ: بَغَرَ النَّوْءُ: إِذَا هَاجَ بِالْمَطَرِ. وَحَكَى بَعْضُهُمْ: بُغِرَتِ الْأَرْضُ: إِذَا لَيَّنَهَا الْمَطَرُ.
