(س) فِي حَدِيثِ سَعْدٍ «لَّما أَرَادَ أَنْ يَبْني الكُوفة قَالَ: تَكَوَّفُوا فِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ» أَيِ اجْتَمِعوا فِيهِ، وَبِهِ سُمِّيت الكُوفة.
وَقِيلَ: كَانَ اسْمُها قَدِيمًا: كُوفان.
