(غَفَرَ) الْغَيْنُ وَالْفَاءُ وَالرَّاءُ عُظْمُ بَابِهِ السَّتْرُ، ثُمَّ يَشِذُّ عَنْهُ مَا يُذْكَرُ. فَالْغَفْرُ: السَّتْرُ. وَالْغُفْرَانُ وَالْغَفْرُ بِمَعْنًى. يُقَالُ: غَفَرَ اللَّهُ ذَنْبَهُ غَفْرًا وَمَغْفِرَةً وَغُفْرَانًا. قَالَ فِي الْغَفْرِ:

فِي ظِلِّ مَنْ عَنَتِ الْوُجُوهُ لَهُ ... مَلِكِ الْمُلُوكِ وَمَالِكِ الْغَفْرِ

وَيُقَالُ: غَفِرَ الثَّوْبُ، إِذَا ثَارَ زِئْبِرُهُ. وَهُوَ مِنَ الْبَابِ، لِأَنَّ الزِّئْبِرُ يُغَطِّي وَجْهَ الثَّوْبِ. وَالْمِغْفَرُ مَعْرُوفٌ. وَالْغِفَارَةُ: خِرْقَةٌ يَضَعُهَا الْمُدَّهِنُ عَلَى هَامَتِهِ. وَيُقَالُ الْغَفِيرُ: الشَّعْرُ السَّائِلُ فِي الْقَفَا. وَذُكِرَ عَنِ امْرَأَةٍ مِنَ الْعَرَبِ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ لِابْنَتِهَا: " اغْفِرِي غَفِيرَكِ "، تُرِيدُ: غَطِّيهِ. وَالْغَفِيرَةُ: الْغُفْرَانُ أَيْضًا. قَالَ:

يَا قَوْمُ لَيْسَتْ فِيهِمُ غَفِيرَهْ

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ عَنْ هَذَا: الْغُفْرِ: وَلَدُ الْأُرْوِيَّةِ، وَأُمُّهُ مُغْفِرٌ. وَالْغَفْرُ: النُّكْسُ فِي الْمَرَضِ. قَالَ:

خَلِيلَيَّ إِنَّ الدَّارَ غَفْرٌ لِذِي الْهَوَى ... كَمَا يَغْفِرُ الْمَحْمُومُ أَوْ صَاحِبُ الْكَلْمِ

فَأَمَّا الْمَغْفُورُ فَشَيْءٌ يُشَبَّهُ بِالصَّمْغِ يَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْعُرْفُطِ.
