الفَظُّ: الكريه الخلق، مستعار من الفَظِّ، أي:
ماء الكرش، وذلك مكروه شربه لا يتناول إلّا في أشدّ ضرورة. قال تعالى: وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ
[آل عمران/ 159] .

(فَظَّ) الْفَاءُ وَالظَّاءُ كَلِمَةٌ تَدُلُّ عَلَى كَرَاهَةٍ وَتَكَرُّهٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْفَظُّ: مَاءُ الْكَرِشِ. وَافْتُظَّ الْكَرِشُ، إِذَا اعْتُصِرَ. قَالَ الشَّاعِرُ:

فَكَانُوا كَأَنْفِ اللَّيْثِ لَا شَمَّ مَرْغَمًا ... وَمَا نَالَ فَظَّ الصَّيْدِ حَتَّى يُعَفِّرَا

قَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ اللُّغَةِ: إِنَّ الْفَظَاظَةَ مِنْ هَذَا. يُقَالُ رَجُلٌ فَظٌّ: كَرِيهُ الْخُلُقِ. وَهُوَ مِنْ فَظِّ الْكَرِشِ، لِأَنَّهُ لَا يُتَنَاوَلُ إِلَّا ضَرُورَةً عَلَى كَرَاهَةٍ. وَيَقُولُونَ: الْفَظِيظُ: مَاءُ الْفَحْلِ.
