(دَلَى) الدَّالُ وَاللَّامُ وَالْحَرْفُ الْمُعْتَلُّ أَصْلٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى مُقَارَبَةِ الشَّيْءِ وَمُدَانَاتِهِ بِسُهُولَةٍ وَرِفْقٍ. يُقَالُ: أَدْلَيْتُ الدَّلْوَ، إِذَا أَرْسَلْتَهَا فِي الْبِئْرِ، فَإِذَا نَزَعْتَ فَقَدْ دَلَوْتَ. وَالدَّلْوُ: ضَرْبٌ مِنَ السَّيْرِ سَهْلٌ. قَالَ:

لَا تَعْجَلَا بِالسَّيْرِ وَادْلُوَاهَا

وَالدَّلَاةُ: الدَّلْوُ أَيْضًا، وَيُجْمَعُ عَلَى الدِّلَاءِ. فَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ:

آلَيْتُ لَا أُعْطِي غُلَامًا أَبَدًا ... دَلَاتَهُ إِنِّي أُحِبُّ الْأَسْوَدَا

فَإِنَّهُ أَرَادَ بِدَلَاتِهِ سَجْلَهُ وَنَصِيبَهُ مِنَ الْوُدِّ. وَالْأَسْوَدُ ابْنُهُ.

وَيُقَالُ أَدْلَى فُلَانٌ بِحُجَّتِهِ، إِذَا أَتَى بِهَا. وَأَدْلَى بِمَالِهِ إِلَى الْحَاكِمِ: إِذَا دَفَعَهُ إِلَيْهِ. قَالَ جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُهُ: {وَتُدْلُوا بِهَا إِلَى الْحُكَّامِ} [البقرة: 188] .

وَيُقَالُ دَلَوْتُ إِلَيْهِ بِفُلَانٍ: اسْتَشْفَعَتْ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ. وَمِنْ ذَلِكَ حَدِيثُ عُمَرَ فِي اسْتِسْقَائِهِ بِالْعَبَّاسِ: " اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ بِعَمِّ نَبِيِّكَ، وَقَفِيَّةِ آبَائِهِ، وَكُبْرِ رِجَالِهِ. وَدَلَوْنَا بِهِ إِلَيْكَ مُسْتَشْفِعِينَ ".

وَيُحْمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا قَوْلُهُمْ: جَاءَ فُلَانٌ بِالدَّلْوِ، أَيِ الدَّاهِيَةِ. وَأَنْشَدَ: يَحْمِلْنَ عَنْقَاءَ وَعَنْقَفِيرَا ... وَالدَّلْوَ وَالدَّيْلَمَ وَالزَّفِيرَا

وَيُقَالُ: دَالَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ، إِذَا دَارَيْتَهُ. وَيُقَالُ هُوَ دَلَّاءُ مَالٍ، إِذَا كَانَ سَائِسَ مَالٍ وَخَائِلَهُ.
