الشجر: في العرف: ما له ساق عود صلبة، وفي "المنتقى": كلُّ نابت إذا ترك حتى إذا برز انقطع فليس بشجر، وما لا ينقطع من سنة فهو شجر. وفي "الأقرب": الشجر: ما قام على ساق من نبات الأرض، وأما ما لا ساق له فهو نجم وحشيش وعشب.
