(وَطَسَ) الْوَاوُ وَالطَّاءُ وَالسِّينُ: كَلِمَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ تَدُلُّ عَلَى وَطْءِ شَيْءٍ حَتَّى يَنْهَزِمَ. وَيُقَالُ: وَطَسْتُ الْأَرْضَ بِرِجْلِي أَطِسُهَا وَطْسًا، أَيْ هَزَمْتُ فِيهَا هَزْمَةً. وَالْوَطِيسُ: التَّنُّورُ، مِنْهُ لِأَنَّهُ كَالْهَزْمِ فِي الْأَرْضِ. وَيُعَبَّرُ [بِهِ] عَنِ الْأَمْرِ الشَّدِيدِ.
