كَافَ (و)(n. ac. كَوْف)
a. Doubled in. —

كَوَّفَa. Cut (leather).
b. Went to Kufa.

تَكَوَّفَa. Assembled (crowd).
b. Was circular.

كُوْفَةa. Kufa ( a city ).
b. Round sand-hill.

كُوْفِيّa. Of Kufa; Kufic (writing).
كُوْفِيَّةa. Head-dress, shawl.

(كَوَفَ) الْكَافُ وَالْوَاوُ وَالْفَاءُ أُصَيْلٌ يَقُولُونَ: إِنَّهُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى اسْتِدَارَةٍ فِي شَيْءٍ. قَالُوا: تَكَوَّفَ الرَّمْلُ: اسْتَدَارَ. قَالُوا: وَلِذَلِكَ سُمِّيَتِ الْكُوفَةُ. وَيَقُولُونَ: وَقَعْنَا فِي كُوفَانٍ وَكَُوَّفَانٍ، أَيْ عَنَاءٍ وَمَشَقَّةٍ، كَأَنَّهُمُ اشْتَقُّوا ذَلِكَ مِنَ الرَّمْلِ الْمُتَكَوِّفِ، لِأَنَّ الْمَشْيَ فِيهِ يُعَنِّي.
