(عَبَثَ) الْعَيْنُ وَالْبَاءُ وَالثَّاءُ أَصْلٌ صَحِيحٌ وَاحِدٌ، يَدُلُّ عَلَى الْخَلْطِ يُقَالُ: عَبَثَ الْأَقِطُ، وَأَنَا أَعْبِثُهُ عَبْثًا، وَهُوَ عِبِّيثٌ، وَهُوَ يُخْلَطُ وَيُجَفَّفُ فِي الشَّمْسِ. وَالْعَبِيثُ: كُلُّ خِلْطٍ. وَيُقَالُ: فِي هَذَا الْوَادِي عَبِيثَةٌ، أَيْ خِلْطٌ مِنْ حَيَّيْنِ.

وَمِمَّا قِيسَ عَلَى هَذَا: الْعَبَثُ، هُوَ الْفِعْلُ لَا يُفَعَلُ عَلَى اسْتِوَاءٍ وَخُلُوصِ صَوَابٍ. تَقُولُ: عَبِثَ يَعْبَثُ عَبَثًا، وَهُوَ عَابِثٌ بِمَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ وَلَيْسَ مِنْ بَالِهِ، وَفِي الْقُرْآنِ: {أَفَحَسِبْتُمْ أَنَّمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ عَبَثًا} [المؤمنون: 115] ، أَيْ لَعِبًا. وَالْقِيَاسُ فِي ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ وَاحِدٌ.
