علف الدابة والدجاجة والحمام وغيرها، واعتلفت. وهو يبيع العلوفة والعلوفات. وله العلوفة والعلائف.

ومن المجاز: قولهم للأكول: معتلف، وقد اعتلف. قال الحماسيّ:

إذا كنت في قوم عدّى لست منهم ... فكل ما علفت من خبيثٍ وطيّب وهو علف السباع وجزر السباع.
