عَبُمَ عَبَامَةً، فهو عَبَامٌ عَبِمٌ عَبَامَاءُ: أي جافٍ ثَقيلٌ. وماءٌ وعَطَاءٌ عُبَامٌ: أي كثير.

(عَبَمَ) الْعَيْنُ وَالْبَاءُ وَالْمِيمُ كَلِمَةٌ تَدُلُّ عَلَى غِلَظٍ وَجَفَاءٍ. مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْعَبَامُ، وَهُوَ الرَّجُلُ الْغَلِيظُ الْخِلْقَةِ فِي حُمْقٍ. تَقُولُ: عَبَمَ يَعْبُمُ عَبَامَةً. قَالَ:

فَأَنْكَرْتُ إِنْكَارَ الْكَرِيمِ وَلَمْ أَكُنْ ... كَفَدْمٍ عَبَامٍ سِيلَ شَيْئًا فَجَمْجَمَا

وَيُقَالُ: إِنَّ الْعَبَامَ الْمَاءُ الْكَثِيرُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ صَحِيحًا فَهُوَ قَرِيبٌ، وَإِلَّا فَهُوَ مِنَ الْإِبْدَالِ.
