طرطان: دودة الأرض. ففي ابن العوام (1: 127): الحيوانات المتولدة في الأرض من قِبَل خمج أو عفونة مثل الدود والطرطان.
وفي معجم فوك: طِرْطَيْنة وهي باللاتينية: Lumbricus ويقول سيمونية إنها مأخوذة من الكلمة اللاتينية terdines جمع teredo
