الشّنَارُ أقْبَحُ العَيْبِ والعارِ يُقال عارٌ وشَنَارٌ وقَلَّ ما يُفْرِدُونَهُ من عارٍ قال أبو ذؤيبٍ

(فإنّي خَلِيقٌ أَنْ أُوَدِّعَ عَهْدَهَا ... بِخَيْرٍ ولمْ يُرْفَعْ لَدَيْنَا شَنَارُها)

وقد جَمَعُوه فقالوا شنائر قال جريرٌ

(تأتِي أمُوراً شُنُعا شَنائرَا ... )

وشَنَّر عليه عابَهُ ورَجُلٌ شَنِيِّرٌ سيِّئُ الْخُلُق وبنو شِنيِّر بَطْنٌ
