[شفق] الشَفَقُ: بقيّة ضوء الشمس وحُمْرَتِها في أول الليل إلى قريبٍ من العَتَمة. وقال الخليل: الشَفَقُ: الحمرةُ من غُروب الشمس إلى وقت العِشاء الآخِرة، فإذا ذهب قيل: غاب الشفق. وقال الفراء: سمعتُ بعض العرب يقول: عليه ثوبٌ كأنّه الشَفَقُ، وكان أحمرَ. والشَفَقَةُ: الاسمُ من الإشْفاقِ، وكذلك الشَفَقُ. قال الشاعر : تَهْوى حَياتي وأَهْوى مَوْتَها شَفَقاً والموتُ أكرمُ نَزَّالٍ على الحُرَمِ وأشفقت عليه فأنا مشفق وشفيق. وإذا قلت: أشفقت منه فإنما تعنى حذرته، وأصلهما واحد. ولا يقال: شَفِقْت. قال ابن دريد: شَفِقْتُ وأَشْفَقْتُ بمعنىً. وأنكره أهلُ اللغة. والشفق: الردئ من الاشياء، يقال عطاءٌ مُشَفَّقٌ، أي مُقَلَّلٌ. قال الكميت: مَلِكٌ أَعَزُّ من الملوكِ تَحَلَّبَتْ للسائلين يَدَاهُ غَيْرُ مُشَفَّقِ
