(رَعَلَ) الرَّاءُ وَالْعَيْنُ وَاللَّامُ مُعْظَمُ بَابِهِ أَصْلَانِ: أَحَدُهُمَا جَمَاعَةٌ، وَالْآخَرُ شَيْءٌ يَنُوسُ وَيَضْطَرِبُ. فَالْأَوَّلُ الرَّعْلَةُ: الْقِطْعَةُ مِنَ الْخَيْلِ. وَالرَّعِيلُ مِثْلُ الرَّعْلَةِ. وَقَالَ طَرَفَةُ فِي الرِّعَالِ وَجَعَلَهَا لِلطَّيْرِ:

ذُلُقٌ فِي غَارَةٍ مَسْفُوحَةٍ ... كَرِعَالِ الطَّيْرِ أَسْرَابًا تَمُرُّ

وَأَرَاعِيلُ الرِّيَاحِ: أَوَائِلُهَا. وَحَكَى ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ: تَرَكْتُ عِيَالًا رَعْلَةً، أَيْ كَثِيرَةً. فَأَمَّا قَوْلُهُ:

أَبَأْنَا بِقَتْلَانَا وَسُقْنَا بِسَبْيِنَا ... نِسَاءً وَجِئْنَا بِالْهِجَانِ الْمُرَعَّلِ

فَالْمَعْنَى الْمُجَمَّعُ، مِنَ الْقِيَاسِ الَّذِي ذَكَرْنَاهُ. وَيُقَالُ الْمُرَعَّلُ: السَّمِينُ الْمُخْتَارُ; وَلَيْسَ بِبَعِيدٍ، إِلَّا أَنَّ الْقَوْلَ الْأَوَّلَ أَقْيَسُ.

وَالْأَصْلُ الثَّانِي الرَّعْلَةُ: مَا يُقْطَعُ مِنْ أُذُنِ الشَّاةِ وَيُتْرَكُ مُعَلَّقًا يَنُوسُ، كَأَنَّهُ زَنَمَةٌ. وَنَاقَةٌ رَعْلَاءُ، إِذَا فُعِلَ بِهَا ذَلِكَ. قَالَ الْفِنْدُ الزِّمَّانِيُّ: رَأَيْتُ الْفِتْيَةَ الْأَعْزَا ... لَ مِثْلَ الْأَيْنُقِ الرُّعْلِ

قَالَ ابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ: مَرَّ فُلَانٌ يَجُرُّ رَعْلَهُ، وَأَرَاعِيلَهُ، أَيْ ثِيَابَهُ. وَشَاةٌ رَعْلَاءُ: طَوِيلَةُ الْأُذُنِ. وَيُقَالُ لِلَّذِي تَهَدَّلَ أَطْرَافُهُ مِنَ الثِّيَابِ: أَرْعَلُ.

وَمِمَّا شَذَّ عَنِ الْبَابَيْنِ - وَقَدْ يُمَكَّنُ مِنْ أَحَدِهِمَا - الرَّعْلَةُ، وَهِيَ النَّعَامَةُ. وَيُقَالُ إِنَّ الرَّاعِلَ فُحَّالٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ.
