(حَشَمَ) الْحَاءُ وَالشِّينُ وَالْمِيمُ أَصْلٌ مُشْتَرَكٌ، وَهُوَ الْغَضَبُ أَوْ قَرِيبٌ مِنْهُ.

قَالَ أَهْلُ اللُّغَةِ. الْحِشْمَةُ: الِانْقِبَاضُ وَالِاسْتِحْيَاءُ. وَقَالَ قَوْمٌ: هُوَ الْغَضَبُ. قَالَ ابْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ: رُوِيَ عَنْ بَعْضِ فُصَحَاءِ الْعَرَبِ: إِنَّ ذَلِكَ مِمَّا يُحْشِمُ بَنِي فُلَانٍ، أَيْ يُغْضِبُهُمْ. وَذَكَرَ آخَرُ أَنَّ الْعَرَبَ لَا تَعْرِفُ الْحِشْمَةَ إِلَّا الْغَضَبَ، وَأَنَّ قَوْلَهُمْ لِحَشَمِ الرَّجُلِ خَدَمُهُ، إِنَّمَا مَعْنَاهُ أَنَّهُمُ الَّذِينَ يَغْضَبُ لَهُمْ وَيَغْضَبُونَ لَهُ.

قَالَ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ: قَالَ أَبُو زَيْدٍ: حَشَمْتُ الرَّجُلَ أَحْشِمْهُ وَأَحْشَمْتُهُ، وَهُوَ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ إِلَيْكَ فَتُؤْذِيَهُ وَتُسْمِعَهُ مَا يَكْرَهُ. وَابْنُ الْأَعْرَابِيِّ يَقُولُ: حَشَمْتُهُ فَحَشَمَ، أَيْ أَخْجَلْتُهُ. وَأَحْشَمْتُهُ: أَغْضَبْتُهُ. وَأَنْشَدَ: لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّ قُرْصَ أَبِي خُبَيْبٍ ... بَطِيءُ النُّضْجِ مَحْشُومُ الْأَكِيلِ
