الهَامَة: من عقائد أهل الجالية إن عظامَ الميت تصير هامَةً فتطير والهامَة طائرٌ مُتشائم به، والهامَّةُ: بتشديد الميم ما له سمٌّ كالحية جمعُها هوامّ، وقد يطلق الهوامّ على ما لا يقتل من الحشرات ومنه قوله عليه الصلاة والسلام: "أيؤذيك هوام رأسك" أي قلمه، وفي "الصحاح": "ولا يقع هذا الاسمُ إلا على المخوف من الأحناش"، والحَنَشُ الحيّ' وما أشبه رؤوسه رؤوس الحيات.
