المصمت: ضد المجوف. والحروف المصمتة مَا عدا الْحُرُوف الذلاقة. وَإِنَّمَا سميت مصمتة لِأَنَّهَا لثقلها كالشيء المصمت الَّذِي لَا جَوف لَهُ أَو لِأَنَّهَا صمت عَنْهَا فِي بِنَاء رباعي أَو خماسي أَي اصمت المتكلمون أَن يجْعَلُوا مِنْهَا رباعيا أَو خماسيا.
