الكَفَّارة: ما يكفَّر أي يغطَّى به الإثم، وشرعاً: ما كُفِّر به من صدقةٍ وصوم ونحوهما سمى به، لأنه يكفر الذنب ويستره ككفارة اليمين.

[في الانكليزية] Expiation ،expiatory gift
[ في الفرنسية] Expiation ،offrande expiatoire
بالفتح وتشديد الفاء من الكفر وهو التغطية يعنى التي تغطّي إثم الحنث وغيره. وفي اصطلاح أهل الشرع هو ما كفّر به من صدقة ونحوها كذا في الكرماني شرح صحيح البخاري.
