الفَارِس: راكبُ الفرس وعن ابن السِّكِّيت: الفارس الراكبُ على الحافر فرساً كان أو بغلاً أو حماراً، وقال أبو زيد: لا أقول لصاحب البغل والحمار فارسٌ ولكن أقول بَغَّال وحَمَّا جمعُه فِرسان وفوارس وأيضاً الفارس الأسده.
