(حَثِلَ) الْحَاءُ وَالثَّاءُ وَاللَّامُ أَصْلٌ وَاحِدٌ يَدُلُّ عَلَى سُوءٍ وَحَقَارَةٍ. فَحُثَالَةُ الْبُرِّ: رَدِيُّهُ. وَحُثَالَةُ الدُّهْنِ وَمَا أَشْبَهَهُ: ثُفْلُهُ. وَالْمُحْثَلُ: السَّيِّئُ الْغِذَاءِ. قَالَ مُتَمِّمٌ:

وَأَرْمَلَةٍ تَمْشِي بَأَشْعَثَ مُحْثَلٍ ... كَفَرْخِ الْحُبَارَى رَأْسُهُ قَدْ تَصَوَّعَا

شَبَّهَهُ بِفَرْخِ الْحُبَارَى لِأَنَّهُ قَبِيحُ الْمَنْظَرِ مُنَتَّفُ الرِّيشِ.
