(أَسَّ) الْهَمْزَةُ وَالسِّينُ يَدُلُّ عَلَى الْأَصْلِ وَالشَّيْءِ الْوَطِيدِ الثَّابِتِ، فَالْأُسلُ الْبِنَاءِ، وَجَمْعُهُ آسَاسٌ، وَيُقَالُ لِلْوَاحِدِ: أَسَاسٌ، بِقَصْرِ الْأَلِفِ، وَالْجَمْعُ أُسُسٌ. قَالُوا: الْأُسُّ أَصْلُ الرَّجُلِ، وَالْأُسُّ وَجْهُ الدَّهْرِ، وَيَقُولُونَ: كَانَ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أُسِّ الدَّهْرِ. قَالَ الْكَذَّابُ الْحِرْمَازِيُّ:

وَأُسُّ مَجْدٍ ثَابِتٌ وَطِيدُ ... نَالَ السَّمَاءَ فَرْعُهُ الْمَدِيدُ

فَأَمَّا الْآسُ فَلَيْسَ هَذَا بَابَهُ، وَقَدْ ذُكِرَ فِي مَوْضِعِهِ.

آس: نبات الآس، ويطلق عند الشعراء على العذار وهو شعر الخد (انظر الجريدة الآسيوية 1839، 1: 170) - والبقايا وجثة الإنسان (كوسج المختار 80).

آس: الآسُ: شَجَرٌ ورقُهُ العِطْر، الواحدةُ بالهاء.. والآسُ: شيءٌ من العسل، تقول: أَصَبْنا آسآ من العسل، كما تقول: كعباً من السَّمن، قال مالك بن خالد الخُناعيّ [الهُذليّ] : 

والخُنْسُ لن يُعْجِزَ الأيّامَ ذو حَيَدٍ ... بمُشْمَخِرٍّ به الظَّيّانُ والآس

[والآس: القبر. والآس: الصاحب] .
