المعاني: هي الصورة الذهنية؛ من حيث إنه وضع بإزائها الألفاظ والصور الحاصلة في العقل، فمن حيث إنها تقصد باللفظ سميت: مفهومًا، ومن حيث إنه مقول في جواب ما هو سميت: ماهية، ومن حيث ثبوته في الخارج سميت حقيقة، ومن حيث امتيازه عن الأغيار سميت هوية.
